[ letter from the editor ]
When we converse with friends, we’re not worried about being evaluated on every little comment, so naturally, we use idioms, slang and less-than-correct grammar in our spoken language. But how about professional journalists when they deliver the news? Should they be held to a higher standard? They are communicators, after all, and if journalists aren’t expected to adhere to language rules, who is? I’m not saying anyone needs to go out and learn how to diagram sentences—that ship sailed decades ago. But it makes sense to expect people in the business of words to use them correctly. In that spirit, we periodically spotlight the snafus we’ve heard, mostly on-air, to illustrate that the rules of language are not random, but logical. Take the common abuse of ‘neither’ and ‘either,’ which require singular verbs, not, as was recently reported on CBS: “Neither were surprised by the outpouring of support.” The error is more obvious when you hear it this way, Neither he nor I was (not were) surprised by ... Also obvious, when you think about it, are pronoun errors. NPR reported, “This came from the California tech world, who believe ...” Of course, an inanimate entity cannot be a ‘who’; it should read ‘which.’ And we’ll often hear the wrong verb form after a prepositional phrase, like NPR’s “Each new group of immigrants look down on the next group.” This one is confusing, but it actually means the group is looking down, not the immigrants, and ‘group’ would take the singular verb ‘looks.’ Those of us in the business love to split hairs about this stuff, but does it really matter in the long run? It matters to wordsmiths, and apparently to the many readers who have sent in comments about grammar over the years. Obviously people are watching. And listening.

A glimpse at what’s going on around St. Louis and beyond.
Ever since Michelle Obama appeared on The Tonight Show and performed the
dance number ‘Evolution of Mom Dancing,’ I have been reflecting on my relationship with dancing. It started in the late ’70s at the Mississippi River Festival, where bands like Loggins & Messina and Poco played in front of thousands of kids listening and dancing on a hillside without a care in the world. All you needed to do was move your hips without spilling your beer, and you were considered a good dancer. Then John Travolta ruined it all with Saturday Night Fever. All of a sudden we were expected to know right from left, move in unison, and twirl without stumbling—all difficult for someone who sometimes trips when she walks. I sat out most of the disco years scowling. My dancing then became limited to the obligatory numbers at family weddings. When the band plays We Are Family, the entire Fitzgerald clan, all of whom share my level of grace, heads to the dance floor just to make sure everyone else knows we ‘own it.’ I’m pretty sure people think we are filming a commercial for future hip and knee replacements. So why did the Michelle Obama dance hit such a nerve? Probably because my son is getting married and there will be a moment when all eyes will be on us for the mother-son dance. These days every wedding party puts together some sort of elaborate dance routine, but that would have required years of dance lessons for me. And honestly, other than this one occasion, I am happy spinning around in my own little world. My son, Jack, and I will be dancing to Dionne Warwick’s ‘Do You Know the Way to San Jose.’ I know it’s not a standard mother/son song, but we wanted a song that reflected the kind of mother I was: one who never bothered to learn lullabies. When the kids were young, I knew the lyrics to exactly two songs: this one and ‘Matchmaker’ from Fiddler on the Roof. So my son and daughter were rocked to sleep listening to ruminations about what their mother’s future might hold once she figured out how to get to San Jose. Naturally, when it came time to pick a song for this happy occasion, we all agreed this was ‘our song.’ So in June, the mother-son dance will perplex the guests, but leave me a crying mess. I suspect this fixation with dance is my way of dealing with Jack getting married. A therapist reading this might say, “No, you idiot, it is about your evolution as a mom.” But I don’t have time for self-reflection when I need to get ready for leading my old college pals in some oldies but goodies from Earth, Wind and Fire. And there’s no way I’m going to miss doing that, despite any issues around middle-aged dancing. Will you please follow Town&Style on Instagram? I promise, no pictures of me dancing. OK, maybe just one. I am now posting pictures and captions and would love to hear from you, so please email me at phannum@townandstyle.com.

cover story
John Vatterott
The dividing line between the haves and the have-nots in our society is education. As hard as it is for all young people to find high-paying jobs these
days, it’s nearly impossible for those who drop out of high school and don’t go on to college. A full 90 percent of U.S. jobs require at least a high school diploma, yet more than 3 million high school students drop out annually. According to Education Week, most who drop out are from economically and/or socially disadvantaged families. Some 75 percent of U.S. crimes are committed by high school dropouts. Obviously, education forms a solid foundation for future success and well-being. That’s why, for the last 10 years, ACCESS (Academies Creating Challenging Education for St. Louis Students) Academies has provided students in underserved areas with a top-quality, values-based education. “ACCESS transforms those make-or-break middle school years into a launching pad for high school success,” says board president John Vatterott. “We make a seven-year commitment to each student, beginning in middle school and continuing throughout high school.” Currently operating from Most Holy Trinity School & Academy in North St. Louis, St. Cecilia School & Academy in South St. Louis, and St. Louis the King School at the Cathedral in the Central West End, ACCESS provides scholarship support, a challenging core curriculum, extensive tutoring, life skills training, enrichment opportunities, and an extended school day and year. Parent/guardian involvement is mandatory.
“Our goal is to get each student into a college-prep high school, and we have an outstanding track record,” Vatterott says. Of more than 600 students who attended ACCESS middle schools during the last decade, 98 percent were accepted into prestigious college-prep high schools. There, they participated in the ACCESS Graduate Support Program, which provides tuition assistance, tutoring, mentoring, counseling, ACT preparation courses and other services to ensure continued success. An amazing 99 percent of these students graduated from high school on time, and 94 percent went on to college or other types of post-secondary education. “It’s not rocket science,” Vatterott says. “ACCESS supplies a structured education, high expectations, the right environment and follow-up support. It works.” ACCESS accepts students regardless of grades, test scores, race, ethnicity or religious affiliation. The program’s high school students get some support from the Annual Scholarship Dinner, hosted by ACCESS and the Vatterott Foundation. This year’s event takes place June 3 at The Four Seasons Hotel. “But we receive no public funding, so we rely on donations from St. Louisans who want to invest in the future of their community,” Vatterott says. “There is no resource more valuable than our young people. We’ve learned a lot during our first decade, and our goals for the future are clear: to expand into other underserved areas, including Ferguson, to expand our follow-up support program into the college years, and to continue empowering students to break the cycle of poverty and despair.”

[ talkof thetowns ] by bill beggs jr. Crime summaries can be unintentionally amusing, especially in Ballwin, one of our area’s most crime-free communities. Almost nothing heinous happens there most weeks, as is also the case in, say, Glendale and Oakland. Our apologies for making light of bicycle and leaf-blower thefts to the former owners of said missing items. But there seems to be a common thread in the summary released by Ballwin police for the two weeks spanning April 28 to May 12: two bucks. Yep, two of the half-dozen or so items involved the theft of $2. First, a bucket filled with about $150 worth of copper fittings was removed from an unsecured vehicle. But the victim made sure to report that $2 in change was missing, too. The very next day, another victim reported that “$2 in U.S. currency (change)” was taken from the ashtray of his or her vehicle, also unsecured. Your investigative team has probable cause to believe that the Two-Dollar Thief is at large in the Ballwin area. Why, that’s enough for 400 pieces of penny candy! In any case, people, secure your cars. That’s police-speak for locking them. Think about doing the same with your garage doors. Isn’t this just common sense? If you don’t, in no time the Two-Dollar Thief’s spoils could add up to, well, a sum that won’t be quite so humorous! There have been some interesting goingson behind Schneithorst’s façade upstairs just off the Biergarten, most definitely falling in the category of ‘Who knew?’ Gott im Himmel! Is a wolverine (statuette) poised to devour (the statuette of a) mama stork in her nest atop the chimney? No, but the oh-so-Teutonic former banquet room is now the offices of Blue Ocean Portfolios, rugged dark timbers, massive stone hearth and all. Founded in 2009, the investment firm previously

located in Chesterfield moved into the former bastion of society dining. Interestingly, the late investment banker John R. Woods in 2004 had renovated and customized the space to reflect his notoriously adventurous taste. But it had not been occupied since his fatal motorcycle crash in 2008. Today the Village at Schneithorst’s, located at Clayton Road and Lindbergh Boulevard,
is home to several investment firms, and Blue Ocean founder Jim Winkelmann is excited to share the parking lot and rub shoulders with several competitors, adding that it’s a bit sobering to occupy the high-ceilinged, 1950s-era room where local civic notables, sports and entertainment luminaries, and pillars of industry once held court. If that seems too sobering, don’t worry: a frosty adult beverage isn’t far away … as everyone has, no doubt, discovered, usually after the New York Stock Exchange bell has rung to close the day’s trading, of course. Plus, where else to do lunch with a client? Why, right downstairs.
since it seems like the kids just got out! For all shows, bring blankets and a cooler, but no glass or tobacco. Concessions will be available for purchase. “Spider, this is Fly. Fly, meet Spider. Shake, uh, appendages.” We’ll call this unlucky knucklehead Fly, because he just happened to wander right into Spider’s web while buying gift cards in large amounts at a Walgreens in O’Fallon. Fly, of course, just happened to be using a couple of bogus credit cards. Spider (the cops) had an eye on the drugstore for that very reason, and

Remember hanging a bed sheet over the clothesline at dusk and screening home movies until dad stopped cussing out the projector, which had jammed and shredded film for the last time? Some of us do. Technology has made it much easier and more pleasant for families to watch movies outside. Chesterfield has a giant inflatable screen to make the experience a blast for the family films it plans to show three Friday nights at dusk this summer, for free. Selections, to be shown at the amphitheater, include The LEGO Movie as the first pick, on Friday, June 5. (Wonder whether the LEGO folks, full of hope, put together an Oscar statue with those evil sharp blocks that somehow manage to be under a bare foot when dad heads groggily to the bathroom in the wee-wee hours?) New and gently used toys are being accepted as a donation that night. A week later, June 12, Planes: Fire & Rescue, will be shown. Firefighters from Monarch Fire Protection District will be on hand, because what kid doesn’t love a fire truck? Then the 2015 Academy Award-winner for best animated feature film, Big Hero 6, will unspool July 17. Looks like the movie pickers are saving the best for last—at least as far as the Academy was concerned. Donations of school supplies will be greatly appreciated at that screening. Although it’s hard to believe anyone’s thinking school in mid-July,
just happened to be there looking at surveillance photos of people engaging in the criminal practice when Fly dropped in. Why, he sure looked familiar. After the cops moved in on him, he started to sing, err, buzz. Fly had the equipment to make fake cards in his car. And some fake credit cards. Plus there were dozens more numbers in his phone, stolen from unlucky consumers, that a henchperson had texted to him. Seems the partners in crime would score the value of a $500 gift card purchased with the bad plastic. Alas, these cards were not gifts to anyone but themselves. Earlier this month, the feds sentenced Fly to more than three years in the big house … and ordered him to make more than a cool 60 grand in restitution to the folks whose accounts his partner(s) had illicitly accessed. But he’d done only some of his shopping here, racking up that amount in and around the StL. He piqued the U.S. Attorney’s interest by making his ruse into interstate commerce. My, my; what is this world coming to? Doesn’t anybody just write bad checks anymore? Want to do more than walk, run or ride downtown this July? How about sliding down Market Street in the swelter of a St. Louis summer? And you don’t even have to risk a bicycle accident to do it. Slide the City, a giant

waterslide, is coming to the Lou in July. How giant? About the length of three city blocks: 1,000 feet or so. This nutty contraption is kind of like the inflatables that invade a church or school picnic, except it’s bigger and has a constant flow of H2O. Participants will be able to go with the flow, au naturel … well, covered with swim shorts, bathing suits and any other garment the wearer doesn’t mind getting wet. (Will there be any takers in three-piece business suits? And if not, why?) Or they can zip down the slide while riding inflatable creatures the likes of killer whales and other creatures of the deep. Tickets for the event over the weekend of July 11 and 12 (Saturday and Sunday) start at $13 for a single trip, more for a three-trip ticket, and a few or more dollars to take as many slippery trips as your heart desires. Meanwhile, there’ll be music, vendors and giveaways thanks to a partnership with three radio stations: Fresh 102.5, KMOX, and Y98. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to area food banks. Feel good, do good …
and who cares about the humidity? But then, it could rain. Big whoop. In that case, just keep slip slidin’ away. A wag famously said: ‘The difference between involvement and commitment is like ham and eggs. The chicken is involved; the pig is committed.’ Well, it seems residents of Kirkwood, Webster Groves and other burgs around the metro can ‘get involved’ with chickens … specifically egg-laying hens, without making a long-term commitment. These are egglayers, not fryers, and they are being offered by a local business called The Easy Chicken, where you can rent a hen or hens, plus coop to see if fresh-laid eggs are right for you. Customers can try out the hens for a season, or may decide that their small operation is great year-round, and purchase their egg-layers for chicken feed (literally and figuratively). Not sure whether the neighbors will approve? IMHO, a little clucking is less annoying than
a lot of barking, plus you can appease the Joneses with the main ingredient for sunny-side up, over-easy and scrambled, fresh from the coop. While chickens aren’t likely to sleep at the end of the bed like Fido, that is of no concern to the neighbors. What has Fido ever done for them but leave messes and make a lot of senseless noise just over the fence?

Back [atalk new kind of advice column by raschelle burton & patty hannum One 0f my closest friends from childhood has asked me to be her maid of honor. The problem is, I do not at all like the man she is marrying. He’s controlling and immature (at the age of 30, he still loves video games and Disney). Do I have to say yes to her?

Patty: As most of my friends and family know, I LOVE weddings. I’ve been a bridesmaid a number of times and still, at the age of 55, want to be a senior bridesmaid. Even though I volunteer each time a niece or nephew gets married, sometimes even offering money, so far I have no takers. You have been friends since childhood. So of course you have to be in the wedding. And you have to do it with a smile on your face and love in your heart. You already have invested 20 or more years into this friendship—why would you throw it away on a marriage that may or may not make it? And just as there are no ugly babies, there are no ugly bridesmaid dresses … and I am a big, fat liar. Raschelle: Tell her you’d be delighted as long as the bridesmaids get to dress as Minnie Mouse. I feel like she’ll understand. But if you can’t pull off that high-level snark, then just say no. You do not have to serve your friend this way. Just explain that you cannot possibly be the maid of honor she deserves with everything on your plate. She’ll never forgive you and you might not get invited to the wedding, but that just might be the best outcome of all.
I am in my 50s and have lost most of my hair. My friends and family still love me, of course, but I have to attend a reunion soon and am worried. Should I get something to cover my head? —Bald but not beautiful

Patty: Let me point out that this is another advantage I had by attending an all-girl high school. All of us aged just about the same, and the ones who look better get talked about. Kidding, not kidding. I am not sure exactly what you plan on putting on top of your head, but I beg of you not to take the route of John Travolta. Every time I see him, I wonder who suggested the clay that has been molded on his head. Here’s the deal: The guys at the reunion won’t care, and the women at the reunion only care about how they look. Bald might not be beautiful to you, but you are the only one looking. Raschelle: No way! Bald is badass. Haven’t you seen a newsstand lately? Everyone is bald; even young men are opting for the look. I say buzz off whatever hair you’ve got left, grow some scruffy facial hair and embrace your inner Michael Jordan. Rugs are for floors. Patty Hannum graduated from Nerinx Hall in 1978 and is happy to report that all of her »classmates look just like they did in their senior pictures. » Raschelle Burton is always the bride, never the bridesmaid.

A couple’s wedding day should be magical, not stressful, which is why choosing the
right venue is about so much more than the food and the flowers. Old Stone Chapel, a renovated historical chapel and ballroom opened last spring in St. Charles, offers both a magical setting and stress-free service, promises owner Sheri Steffens. Part of Heart of St. Charles Ballrooms, a venue that hosts more than 300 weddings each year, the chapel already has proven a huge success, reports Steffens. It is located along the cobblestone streets of historic St. Charles, which adds to the picturesque setting. “The chapel is historic, and we built a new ballroom, which is made to look old so it matches the ambience of the chapel,” Steffens says. “It has a beautiful courtyard with a fireplace and waterfall. Couples can get married outside, or they can go upstairs and have their reception at the same venue as their ceremony.” Whether couples are planning a classic, elegant affair or a wild and wacky themed night, the chapel is ready to accommodate. “We’re not about cookie-cutter receptions, and we work hard to make sure everyone has their special day,” Steffens says. “Just last week, for example, we had a speakeasy-themed wedding with New Orleans flair.” From the decorations to the menu, from setting a date to setting out decorations the day of, the chapel team does it all, Steffens says. “We help couples design their wedding, and we’re there from the beginning of the planning stages all the way through the end of the night,” she says. “Couples often find they don’t need to hire wedding planners, because we do most of that ourselves. They tell us what they want, and we try to deliver.” That level of service even applies to the food. The chapel has various buffet menus, as well as sit-down dinner options, but if couples want something off-menu, the chapel can accommodate, Steffens says. “Our chef is awesome, and we get tons of raves about the food,” she says. “If a couple wants something like barbecue, we’ll do our best to provide it.” The success of Old Stone Chapel has prompted Heart of St. Charles Ballrooms to start construction on another venue across the street, Le Belle Coeur, planned to open in spring 2016. “It should hold about 200 people, and will be all stone and very similar to the Old Stone Chapel, with wood flooring, exposed trusses and beams in the main ballroom,” Steffens says. “It will have that old, elegant look so many brides love, and will also include a balcony overlooking the ballroom.” The Old Stone Chapel also is proud of a different kind of accolade it earned this year: being named 2015 Employer of the Year in the service category from the City of St. Charles. “We won the award because of all we’ve done for the area,” Steffens says. “Before the chapel opened, the ground had been vacant for more than 25 years, so it was kind of a blighted area. The car and foot traffic has increased immensely since Old Stone Chapel opened, and it’s helped move other development forward.”
Old Stone Chapel is a renovated historical wedding chapel and ballroom located in historic St. Charles at 1106 S. Main St. For more information, call 636.947.8270 or visit oldstonechapel.com.

Emily Williams & Jason Hartman
3 | 28 | 15
by karyn meyer | photos by creative crossfire Some things are worth waiting for. Emily Williams had spent quite a few Mondays in the office
sharing stories about bad dates from the weekend when a co-worker passed her number to a friend, Jason Hartman. Even though it took Jason a little longer than most to make the call (one year to be exact!), the couple’s first date led to many others. They had been together almost three years when Jason proposed on a trip to Hawaii with Emily’s parents. “He carried the ring in his wallet on all our excursions, just waiting for the perfect time,” Emily laughs. “Our last night, we took a sailboat dinner cruise on the Na Pali Coast, and he knew it was his last chance!” At the top of the boat, staring out at the ocean with the sun shining, Jason made the romantic moment even better by proposing. Emily immediately enlisted her mom’s help to start planning. “After going to my friends’ weddings, I knew what I wanted, so the decisions weren’t stressful,” she says. Initially she didn’t consider a hotel venue, but Emily says the views at the Ballpark Hilton downtown set it apart from the standard ballroom. She let each bridesmaid pick her own black dress, and says finding her gown was an easy process, too. “It was only the third dress I tried on, but we just knew it was the one,” Emily says. In place of a traditional wedding cake, the couple served one of their favorites, chocolate chip cookies from Zoya’s, a Greek restaurant that served as a nod to their honeymoon destination. Looking back, Emily says the entire day was memorable and exactly what they hoped for: a great party with people they loved. “One of my favorite memories was walking down the aisle with my dad, seeing everyone there to celebrate and support us,” Emily recalls. “And the dancing was definitely fun, too!” Emily is a licensed professional counselor at Relationship Therapy Associates, and Jason is a software engineer at Boeing. The couple resides in Kirkwood.

Ashley Kohm and Kurt Wunderlich’s love story started across the country. Both native St. Louisans, the two met in 2012, when Kurt signed with the Oakland As and Ashley was working in Phoenix. “He needed a place to stay for a couple of weeks before spring training, and my parents’ neighbor knew his mom and found out he was looking,” Ashley explains. “So my mom asked if he could stay with me, and I said sure.” The two hit it off but didn’t start dating. “I thought he was a great guy, but it just didn’t make sense at the time,” she says. They kept in touch, and when they both returned to St. Louis about a year later, the romance started. After nearly two years together, the proposal was a complete surprise. “We weren’t a couple who always talked about getting married, but I think we just always knew,” Ashley says. She had joined Kurt and his friends on a road trip to his alma mater, Michigan State University, for a football game. “I was excited to meet his college buddies and hang out,” she recalls. “He had played baseball there and took me to see the field before the game started.” The couple ‘snuck’ onto the baseball field (Kurt had called ahead to reserve), where he dropped down to one knee. His friends recorded the whole event, and the group celebrated with champagne. Wedding plans are complete except for last-minute details. Ashley says she stayed organized and didn’t feel overwhelmed. “It’s been easy,” she says. “The church is where Kurt has attended with his family since he was 6, and The Chase has such a great location and menu. I just want it to be a big party for everyone, so my main concerns were the venue and food. And the CWE is a great area to go out afterward.” She says it’s about much more than the dress, or cake or flowers. “The whole pomp and circumstance is cool, but it’s just one day,” she says. “Kurt is a great guy, and I’m so excited to be married to him.”

St. Louis has a lot to brag about. One architectural gem in our own backyard is the Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park. From 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, a celebration will be held in honor of Mr. Wright’s 148th birthday on the park grounds. Benefit chairs are Clare Davis and David Obedin; honorary chairs are David Mesker and Dorothy Haase. This year, the annual fundraiser, A Tribute to Trebor Tichenor, One of the Great Modern Masters of Ragtime, will pay homage to the St. Louis native (1940-2014), who was an internationally renowned performer, composer and authority on ragtime music. For more than 50 years, he performed with the St. Louis Ragtimers and as a piano soloist. A concert at 3 p.m. will honor Trebor and feature musicians and family members Virginia Tichenor, Andy Tichenor and Marty Eggers, as well as the St. Louis Ragtimers. In conjunction with the event, a special exhibit of photographs, ragtime piano rolls, and memorabilia from the musician’s collections will be on display in the house. Guests also will be able to tour the house formerly owned by Ruth and Russell Kraus, an important midcentury landmark designed by Wright. The event also will honor Joanne Kohn, chairman emeritus, for her 18 years of outstanding leadership of the organization. Kohn led the campaign to raise funds to save and restore the house and supervised its restoration to a level of excellence that brought national and international attention. Proceeds from the party will help fund projects and programs of the Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park, a nonprofit organization that preserves the house as a museum and educates the public about architecture and design. Completed in 1955 for Russell and Ruth Kraus, the house is notable for its architectural integrity and original Wright-designed furnishings. It is located at 120 N. Ballas Road in Kirkwood. Wondering what to wear to the event, which is outside and in the summer? Thank goodness the invitation says “casual dress and walking shoes.” That means you can wear a sundress, culottes or shorts (not cut-offs). Accessories should include a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen protection. Shoes? Since it’s in a park, I suggest you select a pair of flats, wedges, or even stylish athletic shoes. Avoid wearing heels, as they can easily sink into the ground. For more information about the event and the organization, visit ebsworthpark.org.

A| Versatility is the key with kimonos, which by the way, means ‘thing to wear.’ They come in different designs and lengths. The fabric is lightweight and perfect to cover the shoulders and arms when the A/C is chilly. Kimonos can be worn as jacket, dress and bathing suit coverup, with or without the obi belt. A fashion-forward updated look is to wear one with a top and shorts. Or substitute a kimono jacket instead of a pashimina over a sleeveless dress. Best bet: pair your kimono-designed pattern with a solid color.

Ah, spring! Birds are singing, flowers are blooming, noses are running, and eyes are itching,
burning and swelling. Some 40 to 50 million people in the United States suffer from nasal allergies, commonly triggered by plant pollen, airborne mold spores and animal dander. Seasonal and year-round symptoms can include chronic sinusitis, sinus infections, headaches, breathing problems, and severe insomnia and exhaustion caused by blocked nasal passages. But there’s hope for the miserable. Saint Louis University Sinus Institute, staffed by board-certified specialists from SLUCare Physician Group, provides a full range of solutions for allergy sufferers, from medical treatment to surgery. “Our nationally recognized experts treat the entire spectrum of complications, including nasal blockages, recurrent infections and sinusitis,” says SLUCare’s Dr. Jastin Antisdel, co-director of the Institute and assistant professor of otolaryngology at SLU School of Medicine. SLU has been a leader in sinonasal care and surgery for more than 30 years, he adds. ”Our status as a major research institution allows us to incorporate the latest developments in endoscopic surgery, computer navigation, immunotherapy shots or drops, and other innovative approaches.” The institute is known for its integrated, individualized approach to patient care, Antisdel notes. “Treatment can vary greatly from patient to patient,” he says. “Sinus issues can be incredibly complex—for example, there’s usually no one-size-fits-all reason for, or solution to, sinusitis.” Many contributing factors can come into play, including immune dysfunction, inflammation of the nasal lining, and structural abnormalities, he adds. “To solve the problem, you have to address all the causes. It takes a team of experts to understand, diagnose and treat these factors correctly, safely and effectively—and that’s what we offer at SLUCare.” Kelsey Quirk, now 22, had suffered from allergies, recurrent infections and severe sinusitis since childhood. “I’d seen many doctors, tried allergy shots, and was on antibiotics for months at a time,” she recalls. “I was always sick. I missed a lot of school, and never felt like going out with my friends.” A thorough exam and CT scan at the Sinus Institute revealed previously undiagnosed nasal obstructions, and the SLUCare team opened her blocked nasal passages with minimally invasive surgery. Advanced, extremely sensitive allergy testing, administered by nurse Debra Webb, allowed the team to develop an effective immunotherapy program based on Quirk’s unique allergen profile. Today, Quirk can breathe freely for the first time in her life. “I’ve had no problems and no infections since my surgery in 2012,” she says. “I take immunotherapy shots every other week and minimal daily medication, but I’m completely off steroid nasal sprays and heavy meds. Deb even taught my roommate to give me the shots! I feel amazing—I never knew I could have so much energy.” Two weeks ago, she graduated from SLU School of Nursing. “I’m going to be a pediatrics nurse—and I wouldn’t mind working with kids who have allergies.”

Casual Korean food in the Loop
THE CHEF David Choi
THE PRICES
$2 to $7 at Seoul Taco $18 to $40 at Seoul Q
THE FAVORITES
Pot stickers, Gogi Bowls, Tacos, Slaw, Rib-eye BBQ, Seafood Jungle hot pot
The flavors of Korean food are an inspired blend of sweet, spicy and pungent. Its appeal explains why Seoul Taco has catapulted from itinerant food truck to a new, double-storefront spot on Delmar Boulevard. It also explains why restaurateur David Choi has added another dimension to the business: Seoul Q, short for ‘barbecue.’ The casual street-food part still serves up Korean tacos, burritos and bowls at fast-food prices. Only this food is as good for you as it is good in taste. Generally a combination of rice, protein of choice and shredded lettuce/kimchi, plus Korean plum-hot sauce, the items are very flavorful, cheap and filling if you order enough. You can walk away satisfied for under $10! The tacos ($2.50) have soft, chewy, fresh skins stuffed with lettuce, protein and a delectable sauce that dribbles down your hand. The tofu version is delicious, and I don’t even particularly like tofu. Same for the burrito ($6), which is the fattest I’ve seen. Stuffed with rice of your choice (white, brown or fried) and protein of your choice (chicken, tofu, spiced pork or beef), it is a meal by itself. Sides of kimchi or slaw are $2 each. The kimchi, basically shredded cabbage, has that pungent
fermented flavor that tastes slightly fishy once you get through the heat. The slaw is milder, as it’s tempered with sugar, and pleasantly sweet-spicy. The pot stickers (six for $5) are doughy with a filling of tasty minced pork. The Gogi Bowl ($7) is reminiscent of a rice and lettuce salad with a hit of meat—in my case, spicy pork—and Korean sweet and spicy paste stuck on the side of the bowl, so you can mix it in to your heat preference. The other side of the space is a sit-down, Korean-style restaurant, and the big draw is the barbecue—your choice of six beef and four pork cuts, brought to the table raw and cooked by your server on a special builtin grill. It comes with rice bowls and a wide assortment of kimchi—cucumber, radish, napa—and other accoutrements: egg souffle, sweet black beans, beef croquettes, slivered fish cake and dipping sauces. The meal is an experience, both in dining style and flavor, since kimchi is unique in its fermented pungency. Seoul Q is jam-packed, especially on weekends, and does not take reservations. (Warning: It’s also really noisy, with nonstop, pulsating music.) And the number
of ‘Q’ tables is limited, so some diners order the other option here: hot pots. These are huge stew pots filled with your choice of seafood, beef, pork necks or spicy chicken—and the usual assortment of Korean noodles, greens and veggies. This entree, too, has a special built-in warming burner, a good idea since it might take you all night to eat the amount of food crammed in there. Both barbecue entrees and hot pots are meant to feed two to three diners, so order conservatively. Our Seafood Jungle hot pot ($40) was spicy hot, bitterly fermented, and filled with shells and carcasses I’ve never seen before—and remarkably delicious. Our Ribeye BBQ ($32) was similarly yummy, although the meat had a fair amount of fat and when cooked and cut by the server (with scissors!), he didn’t exactly trim it. The idea with Korean BBQ is to fill the provided lettuce leaves with meat, kimchi and anything else on the table you want. I enjoyed every minute, and each flavorful side (especially the fish cakes, cucumber kimchi and sweet beans). But best of all, the servers were uber-friendly and attentive.

I’ve always worked in restaurants. I started Seoul Taco as a food truck, which is still in operation.
Kimchi: A spicy-sour traditional Korean condiment made with various pickled vegetables and seasoned with garlic, red pepper and ginger made with ground whitefish, potato starch and sugar and is traditionally served cold.
Soba Noodles: These are made of buckwheat flour and have a nutty flavor.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner: Patrick Blindauer, Jerry Vogel, Shanara Gabrielle
Front&Center] by donna parrone
It’s been a wonderful month for theater, with some of the finest and most interesting pieces our city has to offer. Upstream Theater, under artistic director Philip Boehm’s deft hand, always has done fascinating work. This time, for an adaptation of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, he turned the directing reins over to Patrick Siler, who adapted the poem, directed the piece and exceeded all expectations. He gave us a show with such warmth and ingenuity and a cast with such depth and skill, that I was compelled to find him after the show and bestow a giant hug. Jerry Vogel, a St. Louis favorite who plays the lead, is having a great run this year, having just turned in a spectacular performance in the NJT’s Imagining Madoff. He gives another poignant, beautiful performance in Mariner. Joining him are Shanara Gabrielle and Patrick Blindauer (playing multiple roles), who are graced with lovely voices and who found surprisingly sensual moments together. The third performance element is that of Paige Brubeck and Evan Sult, known as Sleepy Kitty, a local Indie duo. They composed and played the music and added their voices as otherworldly characters. Mariner is told in poetry, song and movement and the most exciting piece of theater I have seen in years. When the Mariner goes out into the audience to share the words of penitence and absolution, Vogel’s compassionate gaze is heartbreaking. If you missed this show, please put Upstream Theater’s 11th season on your ‘must see’ list. Andrew Michael Neiman’s new company, Flying Blind Productions, produced a second show, 2x3 LOVERS. Written and directed by Neiman, it was a most unusual way to experience three new plays. The audience was emailed an address on Skinker Boulevard the night before, greeted with wine when we exited the elevator, and ushered into a lovely condo. After some wine and pleasant chat in the living room, we turned to face the music room and watch Robert Riordan and Will Bonfiglio in With This Ring, a mesmerizing discussion between gay men who want to be married, but must deal with the atheism of one and devout Catholicism of the other. Assistant director Leo Ramsey then led us to the bedroom, where Pillow Talk, with Taylor Steward and Michael Amoroso gave us a touching, if neurotic, sample of how relationships can end. Finally, we were brought to the kitchen where a spirited Abigail Oldham and gutsy Julie Layton (brought in at zero hour to replace a sick actor) put an ironic twist to Appeal, in which a woman leaves husband and child for a cheating lover. Neiman’s work is Woody Allen-esque in its intense scrutiny of the human heart. The actors turned in delightful performances, and the sheer audacity of crowding 15 people into a bedroom and having actors literally brush shoulders with their audience left me breathless. And afterward there was pie. Bravo.

Jewish Film Festival at Plaza Frontenac Cinema, is an amazing story based on one man’s experiences as a boy during World War II in Poland. It is a remarkable film—engrossing, touching and mind-boggling in its depiction of survival in the harsh conditions during the ravages of war. Yet many in similar circumstances, all over Europe, did survive, and while each story is unique, they’re all the same in capturing the strength and beauty of the human spirit, the kindness and piety of righteous Gentiles who helped, and the inhumanity of those who didn’t. Run, Boy, Run is the story of Srulik, the youngest of five children in a Polish-Jewish family, who escapes the Warsaw ghetto with his father and is instructed by him to adopt a Gentile identity to survive the war. When he is taken in by a kindly Polish woman whose husband and sons are partisans
fighting the Nazis from inside the forest, she gives him a crucifix to improve his chances of survival. Among the many engrossing aspects of the film is Srulik’s conflicted feelings about his relationship to God, religion and the blurred lines between his past and present. We watch his progression, living as Jurek Staniak through the war years and across the Polish countryside, where he faces villagers, Nazis, Russians and, eventually, his own identity. Do not miss this film. The Jewish Film Festival, of which Town&Style is a sponsor, runs from June 8 through June 11 at Plaza Frontenac Cinema. Tickets range from $11 to $15. It may be true that beauty is only skin deep, but it’s also true that what you see in the mirror can be a source of unhappiness and insecurity. That’s why so many St. Louisans have turned to The Lifestyle Center, a premier medical anti-aging clinic that offers a wide range of solutions. Whether patients want to get rid of unsightly hair, wrinkles or stubborn fat, or need to treat acne or hair loss, The Lifestyle Center can help, says owner Dr. Richard Moore. “We offer a complete range of services,” he says. “We can address virtually any aesthetic need.” A team of expertly trained health care professionals works hard to ensure each patient is pleased with the end result, Moore says. Key to achieving this goal is constant research into new methods and techniques—having access to the latest procedures and equipment gives patients more options. One newly acquired tool at The Lifestyle Center is the Venus Legacy, which tightens skin and reduces cellulite, Moore says. “It’s the best skin tightener currently on the market,” he explains. “It has the deepest penetration compared with similar devices, and it uses suction, radio frequency and magnetic pulse therapy to achieve results.” Newly approved treatments also can come with less pain and downtime, as is the case with BodyFX, a noninvasive therapy that combines radio frequency and vacuum massage to contour the body and improve cellulite. “It can destroy 30 to 35 percent of fat cells within an inch under the skin,” Moore says. “And it comes with no downtime—patients can go right back to the gym if they wish. Compared to similar treatments, BodyFX patients experience very little discomfort and zero downtime.”
The Lifestyle Center’s team of health care professionals
It’s not only bodies that benefit from access to the newest treatments; schedules and wallets often are happier, too. For example, to treat a variety of skin conditions, the center now offers Lumecca (also known as FotoFacial), which can accomplish in just a few treatments what used to take five, Moore says. And for patients dealing with hair loss, home laser therapy is an affordable, effective method that doesn’t interfere with a packed calendar, he adds. “It promotes growth and enhances blood flow to the scalp in just 20 or 30 minutes a day,” he explains. “Patients put on a baseball cap and have a little remote battery pack, and can just go about their day, whether it’s watching TV, walking the dog or doing dishes. It’s much less expensive than going to a physician’s office, and compliance is often much higher, too.” The center recently moved from Forsyth Boulevard in Clayton to a new home at 10287 Clayton Road, near the intersection of Highway 40 and Lindbergh Boulevard. The new space includes better parking that’s more private, updated entry and waiting areas, and state-of-the-art treatment rooms, Moore says.
The Lifestyle Center, a premier medical cosmetic, hair restoration and anti-aging clinic, offers a wide range of treatments and procedures. Its new location is 10287 Clayton Road, Ste. 360. Technology is moving at lightning speed in medicine, and that includes the field of medicine that focuses on beauty. With the impetus of an aging population, research and product development in cosmetic surgery and related fields is keeping pace, helping us look younger and more like our best selves. The trend is toward less-invasive treatments done earlier to hold back the hands of time without drastic measures. We’ve compiled 10 advancements and trends that may be just what the doctor ordered.
■
Use Your Own Platelets
Medicine is finding more and more uses for our platelets and other blood components. Patients like it because this form of treatment comes from their own bodies. Dr. Richard Moore, medical director of The Lifestyle Center, uses PRP (platelet-rich plasma) in many of his procedures. He explains how it works: “Using a small butterfly needle, I draw up one to two syringes of blood and centrifuge it to separate the components into layers. We take the PRP layer and use it in several applications.” In what he calls the vampire face-lift (because it uses your own blood), he uses Restylane filler to plump up hollow areas, layering PRP over the filler. “It helps the regeneration of collagen, and improves skin texture with a tightening and firming effect,” Moore says. It also can be used to help smooth out facial scars. Moore also uses PRP with fat transfer procedures like a breast enhancement or buttock lift to increase survival of the fat tissue. “Particularly in breast lifts, the combination of dermal filler and PRP helps rejuvenate the skin and increase sensation in the breast,” he says. And PRP aids with hair transplant, too, he says. When the follicles are harvested, he places them in a nutrient-rich solution to which he has added PRP before implantation. Then he injects PRP under the skin in the area of implantation to enhance survival and make the hair grow longer and more robustly. “PRP also helps glue the newly implanted follicles in, making them less likely to pop out,” he says. As for thinning hair, PRP can be combined with stem cells and injected shallowly into the scalp to promote hair growth, particularly in women with thinning hair he says. “PRP makes existing follicles more robust and stimulates weak ones to keep producing.”
■
Bolder Butts
In the last year, partially because of the tush-wagging antics of J. Lo and Kim Kardashian, requests for buttock enhancement have doubled. While these trends are most noticeable on the coasts, Dr. Michele Koo of Aesthetic Surgery Institute says she is seeing a rise even here in Missouri. The requests include buttock implants, fat transfer and buttock lifts, all of which can be done together or singly. Buttock implants have come a long way from the stiff and obvious results of earlier procedures. Now they’re more pliable and customizable. The most economical approach is a set-size implant that can be cut to fit. The pricier route, says Koo, is a customized implant created from a 3-D CT scan that exactly fits the individual. It is positioned under the muscle over the dome of the buttock, but it’s not without risk, Koo says. You can still tell that you are sitting on something and it could shift, she points out, which is why she prefers the more natural fat transfer or fat repositioning. “With fat transfer, we can do only a small amount at a time because it has to have a blood supply to survive,” she says. “Fat taken from the abdomen or upper thighs is placed in the buttock. Several sessions may be needed. Fat repositioning can be very effective because it keeps its blood supply. I can do a fat transposition from the lower buttock or gluteal wedge below the buttock, lift it up and anchor it into the buttock, taking out the excess tissue and creating a lift at the same time.” She cautions that the procedure involves a fairly large incision at the bikini line.
■
Gravity & Lower Face
One day we look in the mirror and turkey neck stares back at us. Lower face issues often are the first to make an appearance. Most of us aren’t ready for a face-lift and would rather have something minimally invasive. Enter laser therapy. Dr. Joseph Muccini of MidAmerica Skin Health & Vitality Center says he and his patients are impressed with how much difference a laser can make in the neck area without surgery. “This procedure really fills the bill,” he says. “It involves only three tiny slits, one under the chin and one behind each ear. Through the slits, I insert a tiny laser optic. It melts extra fat and tightens the skin up against the muscle, firming it and restoring youthful contour.” Muccini says patients now can improve the loose skin and extra fat around the jawline without general anesthesia. He uses localized numbing, but patients are awake. He reports that another device that uses radio frequency heat to do the same thing (instead of a laser) didn’t offer the same precision. In addition to the neck and jawline, Muccini says the laser can be used on other areas, like bat wings under the arms. For loose skin under the eye, he uses high-frequency ultrasound to tighten the skin. “It also works well on crows’ feet, loose skin on the chest, and to touch up other body parts, all noninvasively,” Muccini reports.
■
Banish Fungal Toes
Chronic nail fungus makes toenails very unattractive. The CleanSpa Nail Salon in Chesterfield has mastered the art of the faux nail, says Dr. Michael Horwitz. “The island pedicle procedure allows us to create fake nails that give clients the pretty sandaled toes they want for summer,” he says. “Unfortunately, clients often let toenail fungus get the better of them for too long, destroying their nails,” Horowitz says. In those cases, he removes the part of the nail plate that harbors fungus and leaves the white base part, the pedicle, intact. Then he mounts a fake nail to that piece that will last one to three months. As many nails can be done as are affected, so they match the natural nails. “Bad nail salon practices contribute to fungal nails,” Horwitz says. “Many salons have the fingernail filing areas and wet pedicure areas too close together. Hands are dirty and can contaminate the pedicure area, giving rise to fungal growth.” He says if you have a problem with nail fungus, get it treated early to save and encourage healthy toenails.
■
Gentler Plumping
A new hyaluronic acid dermal filler, Restylane Silk, is the only FDA-approved filler for lips and periorbital lines. This is good news for women with thin lips or who have had a bad experience with collagen. Jackie Carr, of Aesthetic Medispa of West County loves the way Restylane Silk shapes the lips. “I can use it in the lip border, the body of the lip and to blur the pucker lines around the lip,” she reports. ‘It hydrates the lips because hyaluronic acid attracts water.” She says it lasts about four to six months because it is a thinner product designed to be used more superficially. Carr, an R.N., likes it because it gives a softer, more natural look to the lips without making them look augmented. In an hour, clients can have their lips treated and be on their way. Any bruising, swelling or tenderness goes away in a few days. Says Carr: “In general, it gives a nice subtle look to the lips to better balance the face. That’s perfect, especially for people just starting out who don’t know if they want augmentation. If they like it but want more, we can do an incremental build-up to the fullness the client wants.”
New Fillers + Delivery System
■
One of the pitfalls inherent in using dermal fillers to replace lost volume is the technical difficulty of injecting the fillers evenly and avoiding lumps and bumps that must be massaged out. Dr. William Hart of Hart Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery Institute has been using a new delivery system, the Teosyal Pen, to inject more precise filler for restoring volume. The cordless, battery-operated pen can be used with any filler and allows the doctor to control delivery with either hand. “I use this most of the time with filler application,” says Hart. “I load the pen with, say, Restylane, and get a delicate controlled distribution of filler. It’s the first motorized cordless filler injection system, and it’s gentle, giving consistent delivery with much less discomfort.” The pen can be used anywhere on the face where filler is applied: the frown lines between the brows, crows’ feet, tear troughs, cheeks, around the mouth, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, jawline or the chin.

Topicals and Herbals
The Far East is way ahead of Western medicine in products that can give us wonderful results for our hair and skin, says Afua Bromley of Acupuncture St. Louis & Wellness Center. Seven Treasures for Skin and Hair, a Chinese herbal remedy, is great for lustrous skin and hair, she says. “It is really helpful for our aging population, plus it strengthens the kidney complex and slows the process of graying hair, helps maintain skin elasticity, and is thought to play a role in preserving melanin in our skin.” We knew green tea was good for us to drink, but turns out, it also is great for our skin and as a rinse for the hair. “Take strong-brewed green tea and rinse your hair in it after you wash it. It repairs split ends and nourishes the scalp and root structure by balancing the pH of the scalp and promoting healthy hair growth,” Bromley says. On the face, she recommends using it as a toner. After washing and patting the face dry, apply green tea. If your complexion is dry, use the green tea by itself. If you have oily skin, she says to make a 50:50 solution of green tea and witch hazel.

New & Noteworthy
Want to look fabulous before a big event? Try Jet Peel, which uses high pressure saline to exfoliate skin. The Jet delivers moisture, vitamins and nutrients without ever touching the skin and without needles. It hydrates and take years off the face, neck and chest, says Dr. Kathy Maupin of BioBalance Health, the exclusive provider of Jet Peel in St. Louis. “This peel lasts a month and is a great option for dry, aging skin. Before we do the peel, we perform a lymph massage over the face and down to the lymph nodes above the collar bones to prevent swelling and redness. It’s very relaxing and people get hooked on them.” The beauty of Jet Peel, she says, is that different infusions work for different purposes. There is one for acne and a vitamin C infusion for people with thickened skin. After the peel, skin looks fresher, younger and more hydrated with no side effects. The filler she is most excited about is Bellafill, a deep filler that lasts up to five years, the longest lasting on the market. It is used to shore up deep grooves and crevasses. She uses it throughout the lower face to give people their jawlines back and replace lost fat. “Bellafil is a combination of collagen mixed with tiny microspheres that stimulate your own collagen production,” Maupin says. “As the collagen in the Bellafill goes away, your collagen moves in to take up the space.”

Quick Fixes
Sometimes, all we want is something that will make us look fabulous temporarily: get rid of the bags under our eyes or just firm up the face for a big night. Dr. Madhavi Kandula, the on-air dermatologist for Fox 2 News, is excited about two products she uses for just this purpose. “Neotensil is an invisible film that creates a netting effect on the under-eye areas to firm them up and make them look younger. It doesn’t hurt the skin, and it washes off,” she says. The downside is its cost: $500 for 50 applications, and you can’t wear makeup over it. “So if your under-eyes are also dark or bluish, you can’t cover it.” But she does suggest it for a special occasion because it lasts 24 hours. Kandula also recommends Rollin. The cream with micronized silica can be applied yourself or in her office. Like an invisible mask, it tightens the skin. Pores look better, skin is firmer and makeup goes on better. It can be purchased online.

Foot Peel
BabyFoot is a take-home treatment that requires only an hour. Anne Strate, R.N., of Renaissance Plastic Surgery Medical Spa, loves sharing it with patients. “We have people come in all the time for it, and they get it for their husbands, too, because men’s feet often can use a little softening. And it’s inexpensive, $25 for each kit.” The peel solution comes in one-size-fitsall booties, which go on clean feet, and then are covered with form-fitting socks. It feels cold and squishy, but there is no burning or tingling involved. Then you just sit and read a book or watch TV for an hour before rinsing your feet off. For the next several days, she says, you won’t notice much. Skin cells are dissolving but feet take twice as long to peel as faces. After five or six days, you will see skin begin to crack and get a really thick peel. Strate says that it takes all the thick calluses off and leaves feet feeling baby soft, but you have to plan for the peeling time. Don’t do a pedicure before the peel, as it will mess up your polish, Strate says. She adds that when you have calluses shaved off during a pedicure, it actually encourages the skin to build up.
Question: When I raise my eyebrows, I look so much younger. To achieve the same effect surgically, would I need my brows lifted or an eyelid tuck? Answer:
Gregory Branham, MD
Washington University
Facial Plastic Surgery Center
(314) 996-3880
The brow lift procedure is often overlooked because the focus is on the excess skin of the upper eyelid. In reality, though, elevating the brow will alleviate the effect of that excess skin and then eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is not needed. A more youthful appearance is created by lifting the brow and opening up the eye. However, in advanced cases, both the brow and the upper eyelids will need to be rejuvenated. As we age, the brow descends, flattening the arch of the eyebrows and creating excess upper eyelid skin. By elevating the brow back to its normal, youthful position, the arch of the eyebrows are recreated and much of the excess skin is no longer a problem. With blepharoplasty, the brow is actually lowered when excess skin of the lid is removed. Before endoscopic techniques were developed, the brow lift was a much bigger operation involving an ear-to-ear incision. The endoscopic brow lift is performed through a series of small incisions just behind the hairline. Incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures and downtime is usually five-to-seven days—comparable to a blepharoplasty. Some patients will require a brow lift and blepharoplasty, but the brow should be repositioned first to determine exactly how much excess skin needs to be removed. These procedures can be done at the same time or separately. If the patient has a normal brow position and arch, then a blepharoplasty can easily accomplish the removal of the excess skin—freshening the appearance of the eye and providing a younger overall look to the face. The key to achieving a natural look with the brow lift is to avoid overcorrection. In males, the brow is naturally horizontal, without an arch, and this configuration should be maintained. It’s a great time to consider cosmetic enhancements. Newer surgery techniques are less invasive, require less downtime from your daily activities and offer a faster recovery. Talk to a board-certified facial plastic surgeon about which approach is best to achieve a lasting, youthful look for your eyes. Do you have a question for one of our specialists? If so, email WU.Physicians@wustl.edu for consideration in Ask the Expert.

I take various exercise classes throughout the week at different gyms using a special fitness pass called ClassPass. I belong to two different dance companies and usually rehearse a total of three to five times a week. I also take a few dance classes each week to practice new techniques.

» universal flu vaccine
Saint Louis University’s Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit has been selected as the only site to test a universal flu vaccine in human trials. Funded by a $1.1 million federal contract, the study will focus on providing protection against all strains of influenza A viruses for multiple years without the need for annual vaccine strain changes. Influenza A is the type of flu that can develop into a pandemic because it affects both birds and humans and can quickly mutate as it jumps from one species to the next. People have no built-in immunity against the disease, and preparing a targeted vaccine could take months, allowing the virus to spread quickly. The SLU unit is one of nine elite institutions selected in 2013 by the NIH to study vaccines of the future; Dr. Daniel Hoft is the principal investigator.

Elevated glucose in the blood can rapidly increase levels of amyloid beta, a key component of brain plaques in Alzheimer’s patients. “Our results suggest that diabetes, or other conditions that make it hard to control blood sugar levels, can have harmful effects on brain function and exacerbate neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease,” says lead author Shannon Macauley, Ph.D., of Washington University. The research, done in the lab of Dr. David M. Holtzman, head of the Department of Neurology, was published May 4 in The Journal of Clinical Investigation. Conducted on mice, glucose was infused into the bloodstream to induce Alzheimer’s-like conditions. In young mice without amyloid plaques, doubling the glucose levels in the blood increased amyloid beta levels by 20 percent; in older mice that already had brain plaques, amyloid beta levels rose by 40 percent.

In a Washington University study to determine whether positive incentives or negative consequences are more effective in influencing behavior, researchers found the latter to be more effective. The study, performed in collaboration with Richard A. Abrams, Ph.D., professor of psychology, may help answer the question, Would students learn better if their teachers rewarded correct answers or pointed out incorrect ones? The research, published online in the journal Cognition, indicated that it might be more effective to deduct points for incorrect answers than to proffer rewards for correct ones. “From an evolutionary perspective, people tend to avoid punishments or dangerous situations. Rewards, on the other hand, have less of a life-threatening impact,” says lead author Jan Kubanek, Ph.D. “The question of how rewards and punishments influence behavior has occupied psychologists for over 100 years,” adds Abrams.

Researchers at Washington University have found that interferon-lambda tightens the blood-brain barrier, making it harder for the West Nile virus to invade the brain. The ramifications of being able to affect the opening and closing of the barrier could be far-reaching. The blood-brain barrier is a natural defense system meant to keep pathogens out of the brain, and interferon-lambda is produced naturally in the body in response to infection. But the new research suggests that larger amounts of the antiviral compound may provide better protection against pathogens and even faulty immune cells that can attack the brain and cause conditions such as multiple sclerosis. Conversely, by blocking interferon-lambda receptors in the brain, it might also be possible to open the barrier to chemotherapies for treating specific diseases like tumors. Such tumors are currently difficult to treat because drugs cannot cross the bood-brain barrier. “This suggests the possibility of multiple new applications,” says co-senior author Dr. Robyn Klein, professor of medicine. The other senior author is Dr. Michael Diamond, and the findings are available online in Science Translational Medicine.

[T&S home 210 Topton Way by karyn meyer
A house can be filled with magnificent furniture and accessories, but unless its space
is apportioned to fit your family’s lifestyle, it will never feel like home. That’s the principle on which Michael Lauren Development works with clients to create both the home of their dreams—a home that also will give them a lifetime of comfortable living. The company, which started with its first project in 2007, works almost exclusively in Clayton and is now building its ninth home in the Clayton Gardens neighborhood, 210 Topton Way. The core design and architecture has already been established to reflect popular floor plans of previous Michael Lauren homes designed for comfortable family living. In addition, the siting and layout optimize the lot’s dimensions, but buyers will be able to select the home’s interior design elements, like paint color, hardware and appliances, to reflect their personal style. “Having the basic concept and design of the house already established is appealing to a lot of people,” president Michael Rechan explains. “Starting from scratch can seem overwhelming to some. At this stage of the building process, we suggest buyers look through magazines and browse Pinterest and Houzz online to
find the aesthetic they want. Through meetings with my team and images they find, we can capture their vision for every room.” The company’s full-time design consultant works with clients to choose everything from windows to faucets, ensuring a cohesive overall design. The 4-bedroom, 3.5-bath home offers an architecturally distinctive exterior with variation in depth along the roofline and front facade. “It has a little bit of a French aesthetic with the style of dormer windows and rounded shutters we chose for it,” Rechan says. “The design definitely makes an aesthetic impact.” And the main level has the kind of open floor plan that is popular with home buyers today. “It’s one of my favorite parts of the house,” Rechan says. “The kitchen flows nicely into the living room, which leads to the outdoor patio. It allows for multitasking in the same space; kids can work on homework while parents cook dinner.” One special feature of this particular home is the additional bed and bath in the lower level ‘in-law suite,’ which is ideal for extended visits or older children. Another big draw is the home’s location in highly sought-after Clayton Gardens. “What’s great about this area is its perfect urban residential blend,” Rechan says. “It feels like a neighborhood but is blocks away from
Main level site plan
restaurants, parks, boutiques and a local grocery store.” He notes this kind of lifestyle is a major trend now in real estate, especially among empty-nesters wanting to downsize. “A lot of families aren’t ready for condo living, so this is a great alternative. The smaller lots mean less maintenance, but the location offers all the conveniences of an urban setting. Living in an area like Clayton just simplifies your existence,” Rechan says.

jim human janet mcafee inc. Jim Human first fell in love in the 1940s, when his father took him for a drive to Vandeventer Place. “Those grand old structures, built from granite and brick—I’d never seen anything so amazing!” He worked for the family business, Human Bros. Hardware, right out of college, but remained fascinated by architecture and spectacular homes. “One day Mr. Edward Bakewell, our family realtor, asked me to work for him,” he recalls. That was 60 years ago. “I was the top agent for most of my more than 50 years at Bakewell, and was delighted when we merged with Janet McAfee.” Human grew up in Clayton, spent 18 years in a grand old home in the Central West End, and then returned to Clayton, where he now lives with his wife. They have four children and eight grandchildren. jim human with real estate partner kevin hurley
BOYHOOD DREAMS When I was a kid, I wanted to be a doctor, movie star or cowboy. FIRST SALE A house in the Central West End, for $18,000. When we sold it again in 2012, it listed for $580,000 and sold the first week. AHA MOMENT I knew I was in the right business the minute I started at Bakewell. I loved showing property and handing over the keys to new buyers. BIGGEST SALE EVER So far, somewhere over $2 million. WHAT HE LIKES MOST ABOUT HIS JOB Feeling satisfied I’ve done the best for my clients, whether it’s a $200,000 or $3 million home. WHAT HE LIKES LEAST Paperwork! TIME TO UNWIND Stress is part of every job, and real estate is no exception. My wife is very understanding and listens to my problems. I get things off my chest, and that’s that. HOBBIES I like to cook. I’m also a great reader, and a lot of books in my library focus on architecture and the City of St. Louis. CRASH GOES THE MARKET When the real estate bubble burst a few years ago, I just did my thing as always. The market is much healthier now. You can tell by the phone calls, the sales and the temperament of buyers. MY KIND OF TOWN I like everything about living in St. Louis—except there are no beaches. TEAMWORK The best decision I ever made was taking on an associate, Kevin Hurley, in 1995. He has been a godsend to me. He’s very good at negotiation, marketing, detail and paperwork. What’s more, he’s charming and a true gentleman. Without his help and friendship, I couldn’t do what I do. TALENT I WISH I HAD I don’t wish. I always wanted to be the best at real estate. That’s still what motivates me, even after all these years.

If the front of your house lacks character, you can always add on a stately front porch. Mosby Building Arts helped this Webster Groves home go from overlooked to inviting. The new porch is constructed of low-maintenance Azek and vinyl with cultured stone column bases, and is artfully blended into the façade of the house and its grounds.
There’s nothing quite like kicking back on a shady porch on a warm summer day. Front or back, screened or open, porches provide a relaxing and homey outdoor space. Here’s some inspiration for creating the perfect porch. Just add lemonade.

Sure, you can ride the train at the zoo or Grant’s Farm, but it’s a particularly unique experience to hop aboard a real steam-powered locomotive, complete with all the sights and sounds of this historical form of transportation. And St. Louisans easily can, after a short drive to the Wabash, Frisco & Pacific Railroad, located in Glencoe, Missouri, south of Manchester Road on Highway 109. “We’re a 12-inch gauge railroad, which means the locomotives are about 1/5 the size of what they normally are, but they’re real steam locomotives,” says Gregory Wapelhorst, a longtime railroad volunteer. For just $4 (children 3 and younger ride free), visitors are treated to a 2-mile, 30-minute trip through the woods along the Meramec River. “The kids love it,” Wapelhorst says. “As the train approaches the station, it’s fun to watch their faces— some are amazed, some are scared. Many of them have never seen a steam engine before.” This year, the railroad celebrates its 75th anniversary. It was founded in 1939, when a group of train enthusiasts bought a 12-inch gauge steam locomotive. Originally located at Brown and Natural Bridge roads, rising land values led to a move in 1961 to the railroad’s current location. Since then, the railroad association has laid more than a mile of track and built multiple buildings on-site, including a car barn in 1976 and a roundhouse in 1992. From the start, the railroad has been run entirely by

volunteers. “It’s all supported by ticket sales, memberships and a few donations,” Wapelhorst says. “Everyone who works there loves trains.” For many volunteers, that love runs deep—one of the railroad’s original founders, now 95 and a resident of Sacramento, recently spent time on the miniature locomotive when he was here for a visit. Even though the train isn’t full-sized, it’s still run like a real steam railroad operation. “There’s basic rules we have to follow, and we have signals, dispatchers, and everything that a normal railroad would have,” Wapelhorst says. Volunteers perform various functions, including brakeman, engineer and conductor. Each role requires specific training, and those who rise to engineer must commit to working six days each season, Wapelhorst explains. Even younger train enthusiasts can try their hand at running the railroad: The minimum age for brakemen is 10, for conductors 18, and engineers must be 21. Wapelhorst knows firsthand the appeal the Wabash, Frisco & Pacific can have for children. He first got involved with the railroad in 2003 after bringing his young grandson to visit. “We finally got him to leave after we rode three times,” he says. Wapelhorst then worked his way up to become a conductor, and his grandson often would join him. “He used to collect the tickets in his little overalls and striped hat,” he says. “He’s 16 now, and is qualified as a brakeman. He can’t wait to be an engineer.”

homework]
Dear Homework,
I read your column regularly and would like your thoughts on changes for my home. First, I would like your ideas on a new storm door/front door. I also would like to replace the existing aluminum windows. A ‘supplier’ suggests off-white or tan windows would work best. What do you think? Also, I would like to do a new walkway, driveway and landscaping. What is your vision for all of this? Sincerely,
—Spice Up My Split-Level
Dear Spice Up My Split-Level,
After
You can, indeed, take some steps to perk things up. Getting rid of the aluminum door and windows will help, but replacing them with tan versions will just be more of the same. I recommend more extensive measures. I suggest changes that will make the house feel more modern. The first step is to create a more dramatic Bluestone entry walkway, paired with a brick and stone garden wall featuring address numbers and a bold lantern. A crisper landscape plan works with the geometric lines of the walkway to infuse a new level of modernism to the property. A new garage door and replacement windows and doors (all in wood) have a modern feel and are painted (or clad) to match the Bluestone walk. The picture window in the living room has been lowered to form doors to a welcoming front terrace. The entry storm door should be wood with a single panel of glass to look like the terrace doors. I would use a simply detailed, solid wood door behind it as the main front door. A new exposed aggregate concrete driveway finishes the scene. To me, the property now has a confident, pulled-together feel that makes us take a fresh and appreciative look at midcentury split-levels. Thanks for asking, —Homework
