Who wants to go back to the lake? Or hit up another parade and fireworks show just for the fun of it? I am game for either option. If you’re like me, this week might seem extra long. We’re coming back from the July 4 holiday, which had a lot of us working only three days. And I’ve heard some companies give employees the entire week off every year. It’s definitely a holiday worthy of such celebration. Lately I’ve been reminded, not always in the most pleasant ways, of just how lucky we are to live in this country. It often escapes me, which I’m not proud to admit. But when you see the devastating risks people take to try and make a better life for themselves and their family here, where we all get to call home, it awakens a sense of patriotism and gratitude. I think my complacency comes from the fact that I feel so much is going wrong right now; there is so much division, ignorance and hate every day in the news that I have to take breaks from it. Leaders are not instilling any sense of decency or pride, and it starts from the top. I look at countries like Finland and Denmark, which consistently rank at the top of lists for happiest countries in the world, and I have a strong desire to grab my husband and kids and go. But that’s when I’m not recognizing the great freedoms and opportunities that make the United States such a beautiful place. We are in charge of our own happiness; we get to be. I was listening to an interview with late-night talk show host James Corden, who is from the UK but lives in L.A. now. To paraphrase, when asked which country he prefers, he said home will always be home, but the United States is just the most incredible place—and people born here often don’t understand how everyone else in the world views it. So I will try to be more aware, more thankful. I will try to disregard any current negativity and hope that it’s going to get better. We are a country for all. Let’s hope we start projecting that philosophy again soon.

GRAND CENTER INC. by stephanie wallace
FROM BROADWAY AND BEETHOVEN TO STREET ART AND MUSEUMS ,
Grand Center Arts District is a destination for artistic experiences of all varieties. It’s the mission of Grand Center Inc. to create an environment where the creative community can thrive. The landscape of the district constantly evolves, according to Karin Hagaman, president and CEO of Grand Center Inc. “We have an amazing and vibrant community in the heart of Midtown,” she says. “There are bars and restaurants for people to enjoy while experiencing one-of-kind cultural offerings.” Recent additions in the area include the Angad Arts Hotel, home to Angad Rainbow Terrace, a rooftop lounge with views of the city skyline and the Arch, and Grand Tavern by David Burke, its signature dining venue. The highly anticipated Bulrush, an innovative concept from James Beard nominee Rob Connoley that focuses on hyper-local, hyper-seasonal cuisine, just opened its doors in April. Hagaman says Grand Center Inc. is working to make all that is happening in the district even more accessible. The nonprofit’s office now serves as a visitor center where people can stop in to get brochures and information. And in the next six months, the organization will launch a new wayfinding signage program. The signs will help those walking and driving navigate all of the attractions. “People know about the great options in Grand Center, but they don’t realize how close they are to one another,” Hagaman notes. “The new program will help them discover that right around the corner is another terrific venue.” For visitors looking for more organized exploration, she adds that there are two new tours of the district. The first is offered in partnership with Landmarks Association of St. Louis and focuses on cultural and art-related institutions like The
STRAUSS PARK IN GRAND CENTER
Fabulous Fox Theatre, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and the Scottish Rite Cathedral. The second, The Grand Scheme of Things, is presented by RenegadeSTL and explores the history and future of the neighborhood. Information and tickets for both can be found on the Grand Center website. Grand Center Inc. will celebrate an important anniversary in 2020. Its campaign to revive the district began in 1980, and Hagaman says people can look forward to a celebration to mark the 40-year milestone. To keep the community thriving, the nonprofit relies on donations. Its largest annual event is the Grand Center Gala. “The event is the source of the majority of our budget,” Hagaman notes. “From maintaining public spaces to marketing, it supports all of our efforts. Everything we do is funded by the generosity of the community, and the gala is an important part of the picture.” This year, the event is Sept. 13 and will be held inside the Big Top on Washington Avenue, but guests shouldn’t expect a circus theme, according to Hagaman. She says it will be an elegant and exciting evening that celebrates the arts district. As part of the festivities, local philantrhopists Jerry and Mary Beth Daniels will be honored for their support. “I love the gala’s intersection of community, culture and the arts,” Hagaman says. “The different parts of St. Louis come together, and it’s great to see all we can achieve when we work together.” &

ST. LOUIS HILLS 〉〉
Considering the giant leaps we have accomplished since, it actually was one very small step for mankind on July 20, 1969. Any news from that whole International Space Station thing that’s been going on since 1995 is below the fold of most newspapers nowadays, if not inside. Sad. Chin up, space cadets: Rich Heuermann of the St. Louis Astronomical Society will present ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Mars’ at the Buder Branch of the St. Louis Public Library at 1 p.m. July 20, the 50th anniversary of two men walking on the moon. The president even has talked about going back. (But why? Does he want the flag back?) Mr. President, the best place for your U.S. Space Force to send its first group of interns is Mars! Today, robots are exploring the Red Planet’s surface. Orbiters are scoping out who knows what from above. Perhaps suitable real estate for subdivisions. Scientists would be first to land, of course. But, if the warming of our beloved globe isn’t reversed, maybe settlers will have to go clear out the martians, claim territory, ignore treaties and … OK. The planet is barren, but tourists already want to bring trinkets home. A vacation on Mars? What SPF would you need to use? Heuermann’s presentation—less glib, to be sure—will introduce you to the ‘must-see’ sites: volcanoes bigger than Missouri, canyon systems as wide as the United States, and ancient rivers and lake beds. Heuermann will share some science, show off spectacular NASA photos, and wrap up with a look at possibilities for human bases and settlements. Y’all should come. To the library, where no extra oxygen is needed. There’s plenty for everybody in and outside the building at 4401 Hampton Ave.

epilepsy, brain tumors and stroke. BrainWorks is a collaboration between Washington U. neurosurgeons Eric Leuthardt, M.D., and Albert Kim, M.D., BarnesJewish Hospital and Nine Network. It will run July 19-21 at the Loretto-Hilton Center in Webster Groves. What began in 2011 as an annual TEDstyle lecture series about advances in medicine became neuroscience theater, selling out multiple performances and introducing new ways for the great unwashed to understand what’s inside their skulls. Channel 9’s BrainWorks production, a one-hour special, won a regional Emmy in 2016. Drs. Leuthardt and Kim are hosts of the “Brain Coffee” podcast.
MAPLEWOOD 〉〉
If it’s about time to celebrate Bastille Day in North America, one need not travel to a French-speaking region of Canada to partie vers le bas (party down). Every year on or about July 14, St. Louisans need only venture to the ’Wood—the streets, sidewalks and stores of Maplewood—for Let Them Eat Art, where even we shouldn’t complain about how hot it is. (Southern France just hit its alltime heat record—114.6 degrees Fahrenheit—on June 28.) Well, if you haven’t already, forget that Marie Antoinette got beheaded and all of that other French Revolution stuff from way back around the 1790s. Celebrate in all-American style from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, July 12, during this whimsical tribute to the French holiday: Enjoy art demonstrations, live music, and food and drink from local eateries. (Not all activities start at 6, and not all activities run until 11. Most notably, kids’ activities in Sutton Loop Park run from 6 to 9 p.m.) If it’s hot, don’t drop—just shop: Retailers will have extended hours and offer special event-only promotions. What’s next? Soon you’ll be able to catch the monthly live concert at Ryan Hummert Park, 2400 Sutton Blvd.: Wednesday, July 24, the bluesy Melissa Neels Band will play for free from 6 to 8 p.m. Two more bands are slated to round out the series: Leaky Tiki Aug. 28 and Big Mike Aguirre & The Blu City All-Stars Sept. 25.
THE METRO 〉〉
If the federal government seems indifferent to the ongoing crisis in Puerto Rico, at least circus performers are trying to do what they can. What on earth can trapeze artists and their ilk do, other than tempt your kids to run away and join them? Here’s what: inspire people and bring them joy, maybe even hope. A novel, cooperative program— Peace Through Pyramids: Puerto Rico—is a partnership between our own Circus Harmony and the National Circus School of Puerto Rico. Last year, they built human pyramids and performed other circus standards in the most devastated parts of the Caribbean island, which was well-documented by an embedded St. Louis American reporter and featured in a HuffPost story. This summer, they’ve brought the same spirit of cooperation to the StL! Future Hall-of-Fame Redbirds catcher Yadier Molina’s Foundation 4 provided seed money for phase two of this unique tour, which began earlier this month and continues through the weekend: Tonight (July 10): 7 p.m. at The Muny July 11: 11 a.m. at O’Fallon Park Rec Complex YMCA July 12: Time TBD at Busch Stadium/Ballpark Village July 13: 5:30 p.m. at Incredible Pizza St. Louis July 14: 2 p.m. at Hispanic Leaders Group at Forest Park Community College TT TRIVIA | NEIL ARMSTRONG WAS THE FIRST MAN TO STEP ONTO THE MOON, FOLLOWED BY THE LUNAR MODULE PILOT. TOWN TALK
SOUTH ST. LOUIS 〉〉
For a soft-spoken, humble man, James Woods has a pretty lofty goal: to become the best fashion designer in St. Louis. For the time being, he’s aiming a little lower. He’d like to move his modest South St. Louis studio to a more spacious loft downtown, closer to the renaissance in our then-and-now garment district. Presently he’s working in financial services at SLU— but he draws constantly, as he has nonstop since age 5. As a kid, drawing came just as naturally as walking. He figured anybody could do it. When he was still in junior high, he won a scholarship to the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, concentrating on ‘life drawing’… everything and anybody from nature, from the texture of leaves and trees to the human form. Woods finished the program before he even finished high school. His was, and is, a prodigious talent. He can illustrate Spiderman and Batman with the best of them; his Incredible Hulk is persuasively hulky, and his images of Native Americans are stirring. But then there are his elegant women. “I keep my mind focused
on fashion design,” says Woods, an array of illustrations on the tabletop in front of him. One is of a women’s jacket with faux fur from elbow to wrist, the lapels and collar a different material. Satin? No, leather. He points out the buckle at the back of the neck of the garment, which he envisions to be made from denim. He grins. “I’ve wanted to design a wedding dress out of denim,” he admits. “I think art shouldn’t be bottled up.” He’s no doubt like many designers with ideas to burn, but Woods hasn’t quite been able to thread that needle with the magic that wends its way from concept to creation to manufacturer. (Now, what do you call a male seamstress? A seamster?) That’s not to say he hasn’t worked in the industry. He’s had a couple
of close calls throughout his journey, some of them pretty frustrating. He recalls an exciting hour-long gettogether with Nordstrom that started with showing them a shirt he’d made and ended with the company ordering 2,000 pieces. And then disappointment. Woods was neither a manufacturer’s rep—nor, alas, a manufacturer. He worked steadily in La-La-Land designing costumes for the E! cable network. He completed projects for Jim Henson, the Muppet man. He sewed for Bob Mackie. He was a presser for French Connection. Like many aspiring actors in L.A., he did plenty of go-fer work, seeing countless famous folks from where he worked at La Brea Avenue and Sunset Boulevard. But he left L.A. after a divorce and came back to Missouri, his birthplace, to start anew betwixt the East and left coasts. “I want to help build St. Louis as a fashion center,” he says, matter-of-factly. If enthusiasm and raw talent equaled success, you’d be dropping his name. Maybe we all could after not too much longer. He’s presently making clothing and working on a new website. For now, you can see some of his sketches on Instagram at @Dragon54595. &

THE INSIDER A GLIMPSE AT WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND ST. LOUIS AND BEYOND. &
PATTY by patty hannum I CANNOT GET THE GUESS WHO SONG,
“Undun,” out of my mind: “She’s come undun. She didn’t know what she was headed for, and when I found out what she was headed for, it was too late.” Yes, I think I am coming undone. I have lost my fight. I am worn out by my outrage at oh-so-many things going on in our beautiful country. I used to be a weekly caller to my senator’s and congressman’s offices to let them know how I felt about issues, but it just doesn’t seem to make a difference anymore. Indifference is an odd feeling for me, and then I found out I was dead. My sister-in-law Terrie received a letter from Toronto stating that Patricia Fitzgerald (my maiden name) had died and left an estate of $6 million. It claimed Terrie was the heir, and that if she worked with them, some of the money could be hers. Clearly it was a scam, though it did state I died from lung cancer, so I had to curse myself again for those few years of smoking. Anyway, Terrie and I laughed about it because well, I am very much alive, and while I love and adore Terrie, there would be quite a few other heirs to my estate, like my own children. A few days later, my cell phone rang. The call was from Arlington, Texas. I don’t know why I answered, but I did. The person on the phone told me there was a warrant for my arrest in California because my identity had been stolen. The caller indicated he was from the Social Security Administration and that he could resolve the problem if I would give him some additional information. First, he asked for my social security number. I responded with, “Don’t you have it? You’re the Social Security Administration.” His response: “Yes, I do, but I must verify who I am speaking with.” I replied, “You called me. I didn’t call you.” Clearly I wasn’t being helpful, and I likely was going to be arrested. At that point, I told him I was an attorney (lie). He said I should have told him that to begin with, sounded a horn and hung up on me. Hmmm. Not more than 45 minutes later, my cell phone rang again from Arlington, Texas. This time, I knowingly answered the phone. I let the guy give me the spiel about my impending arrest, and I told him that I worked for the Social Security Administration (lie) and I knew the call was a scam. But before he could hang up, I turned into my mother and told him how shameful it is that he is preying on innocent people trying to scam money from them, and couldn’t he find a better way to make a living? Again, a horn sounded and he hung up. Oh, but I was determined that someone was going to listen to me. So I called back. I was connected to a new person who immediately hung up. I tried again. Another hangup. And then finally when I called, all I got was a busy signal. The scam artists had blocked my number. I was mildly amused because shouldn’t I be the one blocking their number? So I have decided I am going to answer all of those calls and yell at the scam artists. It is my one-person campaign. And somehow that makes me feel just a tiny bit better about the world. While I can’t fight some of the important issues, maybe, just maybe, I can help make the annoying little ones go away.

SEND MONEY EASILY fee ($0.25), but most users leave a balance in their Venmo account to use for later.
If someone hasn’t said to you, “Venmo me,” you aren’t spending much time around people under 40. The ability to send money to someone has expanded since the invention of smartphones and apps. And since most seem comfortable connecting their banking information with an app on their phone, you no longer need cash. I decided to explore how people prefer to send money easily to one another. PayPal continues to be a dominant player in peer-topeer money transfer. To make it easier for PayPal users to send money to friends, the company created Venmo. The Venmo app is easy to set up and use. You pay a fee (3%) if you send money to others using a credit card, but if you have a Venmo balance (someone sent you money) or use a debit card, it’s free. You can request and send money. There is a social network aspect to the app as well. If you allow the app to link to your phone’s contacts or connect with your Facebook account, you can see who your friends sent money to and why. Then, you can comment on people’s payments and ‘love them’ by clicking the heart. People get creative with their payment descriptions by using emojis or Snapchat Bitmoji. It does take a couple of days to transfer money from your Venmo account back to your checking account (this isn’t automatic). They now offer an option where you can get your money faster by paying a small
My teenager isn’t a fan of the social aspect of Venmo, so he has it set to make all of his payments private. He and his friends actually prefer Cash App, which was developed by Square (it used to be called Square Cash). There isn’t a social network aspect to this app, and it is very easy to use once you are signed up. While the user interface is easy, I found the signup process difficult as my phone keyboard kept covering up the field. I am not good at typing blindly. Once set up, though, it was easy to find my son’s account, which is linked to his cell phone number, and send him money.
9814 Clayton Road • St. Louis, MO 63124 • 314.994.0606 • www.signofthearrow.com
Both of these payment processors offer an option where you can access your money via a Visa (Cash App) or Mastercard (Venmo) debit card. Cash App even lets you direct deposit your paycheck, making it your banking account as well. It is important to note that the apps have a daily, weekly and monthly limit on the amount you can send and receive. Many of you may be Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay users and find it is a great way for you to send and receive money. Most banks offer ways for you to transfer money to others (many using Zelle), but these options can be limiting and require you to know your bank information to transfer the funds from one bank to another. No matter what, you should be careful with your account security and only send or receive money with people you know. So the next time you don’t have cash on you for lunch, just ask your friend if you can Venmo them!

STUDENT STANDOUTS by julia m. johnson
AGHA HAIDER, WHITFIELD SCHOOL 〉〉 NOT MANY 15-YEAR-OLDS HAVE A PROFESSIONAL RÉSUMÉ, let alone one with the title ‘executive director.’ But Whitfield junior Agha Haider is pretty good at stepping outside the norm. After giving a talk about student literacy for an eighth-grade English project, he wanted to become part of the solution, so he organized a book drive that brought in 2,000 titles for kids from disadvantaged neighborhoods. He then developed Literacy Initiative, a nonprofit that earned 501(c)(3) status this year and continues to grow. The organization relies on dedicated volunteers and local support to make sure donated books and school supplies get into the hands of kids who need them in St. Louis and other cities. What programs does Literacy Initiative offer? Books & Cookies has three annual sessions run by high school students. Volunteers work with kids on reading and leadership activities, and the students get a free book and snacks at each meeting. And our new Books & Basketball program helps kids get involved in sports. They spend half of each session on reading activities and the other half playing basketball.
but this year, we expect to have a total of 150 volunteers. They help with fundraising and work at different events. So far, we have partnered with 15 schools, libraries and recreation centers in St. Louis and several in Memphis. We also are developing a program in Chicago. Is it tough to balance the nonprofit with school and home life? It’s a challenge. I’m pretty busy, and there definitely are times when it gets stressful. But it’s always worth it, especially when I see how interested the kids are in reading and how excited volunteers are to come back each year. This summer, I’m attending some conferences and camps—it’s a good opportunity to take time for myself.
How much has been donated? Since 2017, we have given out 8,000 books and $3,000 worth of school supplies. By the end of this year, we probably will reach a total of 10,000 books and $5,000 in supplies. How has the organization grown? I started off working on it by myself from home,
How does helping other students make you feel? The best part is when we bring books into schools, and students clearly appreciate all of the hard work we are doing. We include culturally appropriate titles so everyone feels represented. I love seeing the kids’ faces when they get their books and supplies! It’s one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I’m not sure yet what I want to do as a career, but it definitely will involve helping others. What has been your favorite memory so far? There is a boy, now in sixth grade, who I met at one of the schools. We provided hundreds of books there, and he and I got to know each other over a couple of years. One day, he asked if he could be my best friend. I’ll never forget that.

GIGI ESSER & PETER RAGER
NOVEMBER 17, 2018
by julia m. johnson | photos by ashley fisher photography IT DIDN’T TAKE MORE THAN A COUPLE OF OUTINGS before Gigi Esser and Peter Rager realized
they were an ideal match. “We went on our third date and talked so long that the restaurant had to kick us out at closing time,” Gigi says. “But we weren’t finished, so we sat on a bench at a nearby shopping mall. I felt a sense of peace and comfort that I’d never known with anyone else. We both went home and told our families, ‘This is the one.’” That conversation was not the only time they sat on that bench. In October 2017, the couple returned to the spot, and Peter asked Gigi to be his wife. “I had no idea what was going on until I spotted someone with a camera nearby,” she recalls. “Peter got down on one knee and popped the question. I don’t know if I actually said yes, but I nodded my head—a lot!” The church they originally chose fell through, but the Church of St. Michael and St. George in Clayton was available on the same day. Planner Simcha Lourie ironed out the details, and the couple ended up with a splendid ceremony and reception with old-fashioned flair. “We wanted the wedding to take our guests back to Belle Époque Paris,” Gigi notes. The bride wore a custom-designed, traditional gown with a fur cape, and the groom donned a coat and tails with gloves, ascot tie and top hat. Even their cake recalled yesteryear with its dozens of handmade sugar flowers. Gigi’s eight attendants wore rich, red velvet and carried bouquets of cream roses, scarlet orchids and ivy. “One of the girls found out she was expecting right after the wedding, so we actually had a ninth bridesmaid at the ceremony and didn’t even know it,” she says. The celebration took place on her parents’ 39th anniversary, and Gigi says she and her husband are looking forward to commemorating their first year and her parents’ 40th this November. She is a graduate of Whitfield School and Wake Forest University, and Peter attended St. Charles West High School and Westminster College. They recently bought a home in Wildwood and will honeymoon in Europe this summer. &

cinema under the stars In the spring and summer months, Melrose Rooftop Theatre brings a little Hollywood magic to moviegoers under the stars. Perched on top of E.P. & L.P. restaurant and bar in West Hollywood, classic films from Casablanca to Almost Famous are showcased on the bar patio with the Hollywood Hills and night sky in the background. There’s no better way to watch a movie, especially with seats that are plush, body-contouring bean bags!

Originally from Indianapolis, Murray has made a name for herself in L.A. thanks to her striking and glamorous design aesthetic. Having recently won Bravo’s Best Room Wins, Murray is certainly one to watch as a rising star in her field. Her love of eclectic pieces, bold color and texture is evident in each of her projects. If you’re thinking of redecorating or remodeling, be sure to check out Black Lacquer’s website for some serious design inspo.
bathing without water california (ice) creamin’ McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams is the Ted Drewes of Los Angeles. For 70 years, it has served southern Californians some of the freshest ice cream west of the Colorado River. McConnell’s sticks to its original mission of making ice cream that isn’t full of fillers, stabilizers and preservatives, and it doesn’t take more than a single bite to taste the difference. Flavors like Banana & Salted Caramel and Chocolate Covered Strawberries may sound too good to be true, but don’t take my word for it. You can order McConnell’s online and taste for yourself!
What spiritual practice can be less strenuous than yoga and feel more engaging than meditation? If you guessed sound bath, you would be right. Sound baths are quickly becoming the wellness practice du jour. Dating back to the time of ancient Greek philosophers, they are a form of sound therapy, immersing you in vibrations and rhythms using a variety of instruments, including crystal and gemstone bowls, cymbals and gongs. Intense feelings of relaxation and mental restoration are common and help recharge the mind and body to a calmer, happier state.
pretty in piercings The Body Electric, nestled in the middle of the trendy Melrose shopping district, is one of, if not the premier, piercing and tattoo shops in L.A. Owner Brian Keith Thompson raised the bar for tattoo parlors by paying exceptional attention to detail and focusing on the quality of the customer experience. You also may recognize Thompson’s work from your Pinterest board. Those super trendy constellation piercings are his creation. It’s no wonder patrons from all over the country flock to his shop to get one of his signature piercings (myself included) or intricate tattoos.

TAKE CONTROL:
ADULT ACNE
BY MARYLYN SIMPSON
Some things should be left to adolescents: curfews, crazy hormones and, of course, acne. But for many men and women, acne can creep up well into adulthood thanks to a variety of triggers like stress, changing hormone levels and sugar intake. Whatever the reason, here are a few new (and old) methods for treating it. 1.
OLDIE BUT A GOODIE
Before rushing out to buy the latest miracle in a bottle, check out tried and true Noxzema. The drugstore staple has been around for the better part of a century, and for good reason. Ingredients like eucalyptus, camphor and menthol help decrease inflammation, improve blood flow and cleanse pores. While it may not be a heavy-duty remedy (there’s no salicylic acid), for those dealing with minor pimple pop-ups, the little blue jar can go a long way. $ 4 AT LO C A L D R U G S T O R E S
2.
ANTI-ACNE
Not to get all ‘science-y,’ but studies have shown that people with acne tend to have lower antioxidant levels. The best way to fix that? Change what you put in your body rather than what you put on it. Antioxidants reduce inflammation substantially in acne patients, and Derma Drink uses vitamins A and E, zinc, copper and selenium to fight moderate to severe acne. Results can be visible in less than 24 hours. $ 2 6 . 9 5 / E I G H T - PA C K AT D E R M A D R I N K . C O M
3.
CUSTOM TREATMENT
For those who need a serious solution to their adult acne, Curology is revered as a skin-saver. Customers begin the multistep process of treating their skin by filling out a questionnaire and chatting online with a dermatologist before receiving a customized treatment plan that could include anything from spot treatments to all-over breakout remedies.

No Ban MO
THE COMMUNITY SPEAKS OUT AGAINST MISSOURI’S EXTREME ABORTION BAN THREATENS THE LIVES OF WOMEN, THEIR FAMILIES, MISSOURI’S ECONOMY, AND OUR FUTURE. We, the undersigned community members, take a public stand against the abortion ban (HB126) which MISSOURI GOVERNOR PARSON recently signed into law. Like the majority of Missourians, we believe:
• The decision to give birth is best made by someone who is pregnant,
their family and their doctor; it should remain a private voluntary decision, not the result of rape or incest and a decision made without the intrusion of the government.
• Women’s access to reproductive healthcare determines their education,
career and economic status. When government intervenes in reproductive healthcare access, women’s economic security is threatened. Bans on safe, legal abortion discourage individuals from remaining in Missouri and businesses from locating to our state.
• We know that women are essential drivers of Missouri’s economic
growth. That growth is prevented when our state denies women’s access to reproductive healthcare and family planning services. Missouri needs the unfettered talent and productivity of women to move our economy forward. We cannot afford to lose such valuable resources to other states.

• There is compelling evidence in Missouri that programs supporting
medically-accurate sex education and affordable contraceptives, significantly reduce the incidence of unwanted pregnancies and abortions. These effective programs should be expanded and combined with public policies that address the fundamental health and economic concerns. Criminalizing abortion only puts more women’s lives at risk and the doctors who care for them.
• In passing the ban, Governor Parson and the state legislature violated their
oaths of office to support the rights of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” guaranteed by both the U.S. and Missouri Constitutions by violating fundamental human rights to privacy and the right to bodily autonomy. We urge the state to reverse the abortion ban and will work toward the policy changes noted above and encourage others to do the same. View the current list of 800+ supporters and join us at:

I’m not sure how they did it, but the Zoofari committee created a seamlessly fun event despite afternoon downpours that must have given the food and beverage vendors apoplexy. For those not familiar with this biennial event (a major fundraiser for our amazing zoo), it’s basically a food lover’s dream. Guests stroll the zoo grounds at dusk (and beyond), stopping at the various food stalls erected especially for the event. Fifty-four generous local eateries dish out samples of their signature creations, so that at any given time, attendees might be juggling a plate of sushi rolls from Baiku, sticky ribs from Bogart’s and a salted caramel sundae from Ted Drewes. As you can imagine, no one is particularly bothered by mixing savories with sweets—and doing it all over again— depending on the tempting goodie offered at the next booth. In an admirable show of civic pride, many of our corporate neighbors purchase tables (at $3,500 apiece) and fill them with staffers only too pleased to participate. Besides the obvious allure of food, drink and live music, there’s the attire, which is anything but stuffy. Guests are encouraged to get creative, and they do. I saw plenty of guys in jungle-print sport coats (some with matching slacks!). Safari vests, boots, hats and shorts also were omnipresent, frequently paired, oddly, with mid-calf black socks. Womenswear was all over the map, mostly floral and animal prints, with one particular standout: a flamingoprint dress. Speaking of flamingos, they were out in force in the pond. And the Zooline Railroad chugged merrily away, treating folks to a spin around the grounds as they got to be ‘the kids’ for a change, waving giddily to onlookers while they sipped cocktails. Ditto for the carousel. Guests also could play with the stingrays and sharks at Caribbean Cove or watch the sea lions getting fed at Sea Lion Sound. Besides being ‘the party of the year,’ Zoofari is all about supporting the zoo we know and love, and having a hand in continuing its conservation efforts here and around the world. Even though limitless food and cocktails are a hard act to follow, there were as many people spending time observing the animals as making their way to the tasting booths. I think they wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the zoo in relative privacy. After all, it’s not every day you can get up close and personal with the chimps and bears and not have to share them with dozens of youngsters vying for the prime spots. I’d say that, as much as anything, is the enduring allure of Zoofari.

JET LINX ST. LOUIS by julia m. johnson
THIS PAST SPRING, A JET LINX FLIGHT from Scottsdale to Omaha made history for the private aviation firm. It reached 100 million air miles during the trip, marking a steady ascent in business over the last two decades. According to the company, it is now the third largest of its kind in the U.S., with 18 locations around the country. Rich Ropp, St. Louis base president, says these important milestones come as Jet Linx’s Lambert Airport location celebrates its five-year anniversary and a second local base has opened at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield. The company views its business model as a streamlined, personalized approach to air travel. Ropp says nationally, Jet Linx operates 115 private aircraft that can take clients anywhere they need to go, swiftly and comfortably, on a timetable that works for them. He emphasizes that the company flies directly from city to city without the lines, delays, layovers and hassles of regular air travel. Clients include busy corporate executives, business owners and other professionals. Even pets are welcome aboard Jet Linx planes, which range in size from seven to 14 passengers and offer many on-board amenities. According to Ropp, Jet Linx also prides itself on going the extra mile when it comes to safety and security. Recently, all of its locations suspended operations for a day to focus solely on those topics. Staff members gathered at company bases for an annual Safety Summit and connected online to speakers, videos, Q&A sessions and other presentations from the company’s headquarters in Omaha.
RICH ROPP (RIGHT) IS GREETED BY CLIENT SERVICES SPECIALIST KIM JONES AND PILOT ANDREW POLLY.
Ropp describes it as an informative day of education and teamwork. “You don’t normally hear about companies temporarily shutting down flight operations to do this kind of thing,” he says. “But we feel that when you bring your entire team together— flight crews, service staff and administrative team members—it allows them to benefit from a variety of thought processes. A pilot may have different concerns than a salesperson, but they can learn from each other’s perspectives. At the event, we address every aspect of safe, secure flight operations from the ground to the air.” The day of training is not mandated by regulators; it’s intended to demonstrate the company’s extra commitment to safety, according to Ropp. He adds that Jet Linx is an International Business Aviation Council Stage 3 registered operator and has earned ARGUS Platinum and Wyvern Wingman safety ratings, among other industry designations. The Jet Linx Jet Card program offers frequent travelers a number of attractive perks, including guaranteed rates and aircraft availability and a local service team. “When you tie all of this together with our national company’s 20-year history of accident-free service, it’s no surprise we are such a trusted partner to our clients,” Ropp says. “Our corporate and local anniversaries are a testament to how well we treat those who fly with us. We believe in doing much more than we have to.” &

FINOCCHIO ▶ $9 Grapefruit wedges, shaved fennel, bits of red onion and peppery arugula created a tangy, sweet salad.
IL PALATO first impression »
Michael del Pietro’s Il Palato had some big shoes to fill when it opened in Clayton’s iconic Remy’s spot. But from what I’ve seen, the challenge has been met and then some. The interior makeover is clubby—sleek and upscale—with low lighting and well-spaced tables. The southern Italian menu is small, but everything we tasted was top-notch (and pricier than del Pietro’s other restaurants). Il Palato means ‘the palate,’ which is appropriate considering the dishes blend taste and texture for that ‘wow’ reaction. It’s a very adult place where you can have a relaxing evening of solidly good food. Plus, the servers are stellar.
VERDURA ▶ $8 A palate-
tingling mix of greens was tossed with spring peas and diced, raw asparagus.
CAROTE ▶ $8 This small plate elevated the carrot (and not even the pointy heirloom variety) into gourmet food. A single fat carrot, cut into thirds, actually provided a filling starter thanks to a dense vegetable demi-glace with intense flavors and a generous dose of ground pistachios—an all-around winner.
Wash It Down:
The bar makeover is appealing, with cushy high-top seating and a well-curated (and extensive) wine menu. Specialty house cocktails are planned, but for now, it’s the standard offerings. An Old Fashioned ($8) came stiff and syrupy, the way good bourbon mixed with muddled sugar and bitters should taste.
TONNO CRUDO ▶ $12 This was the standout starter. Cubes of tuna were seasoned with tarragon, shallot and garlic, dressed with olive oil and egg yolk, and piled onto thinly sliced, grilled bread. CHITARRA ▶ $26 You can’t
go wrong with the housemade pastas, some of the freshest and silkiest I’ve tasted. These long, buttery strands sat in a delicate sauce of white wine and botarga, an intensely salted fish roe that screams umami. Traditionally used in this kind of cuisine (Sicilian/Sardinian), it tempts you to sop up every bit of sauce, even after the pasta is gone. The two head-on shrimp were stellar, plus there were a few small mussels and clams. Overall, it was a little light on the protein.
CAPESANTE ▶ $29 Four
gigantic scallops were so well seared, they almost could pass for steak. Plus, they were delicious, seasoned with plenty of salt and sitting on a generous portion of creamy artichoke and leek risotto.
BRANZINO ▶ $28 The whole fish, expertly deboned tableside, comes roasted, tender and moist with slight hints of the lemon, thyme and basil stuffed inside. It is served with hearty braised cannellini bean ragu.
overall »
This place is a winner. The atmosphere is tony, the food is exciting and the service is impeccable. It’s the kind of spot where you can enjoy a relaxing and delicious meal in comfort.

THE BIDDING:

E Pass Pass Pass
The bidding was straightforward: West preempted in ♦s with a weak two bid type hand. North made a negative double, South bid his four-card ♠ suit with a minimum hand, and North raised to game. ▶ OPENING LEAD: ♦ Ace North ♠ KQ76 ♥ AJ107 ♦ 743 ♣ KQ West East ♠ 32 ♠ 954 ♥ 8 ♥ Q9643 ♦ AKJ1092 ♦Q ♣ 10987 ♣ 6532 South ♠ AJ108 ♥ K52 ♦ 865 ♣ AJ4
▶ THE PLAY
1. West led the ♦ Ace, North the 3, East the Queen and South followed with the 5. 2. West continued with the ♦King and Jack, and East discarded the 2 and 3 of ♣s. 3. West, knowing a ♥ through the AJ107 could expose the suit, shifted to the ♣ 10.
4. Declarer won the ♣ shift in Dummy with the Queen.
5. Declarer drew trumps in three rounds. 6. Declarer then played two more rounds of
♣s, and East discarded a ♥.
7. Counting as he went, Declarer knew West’s entire holding: two ♠s, one ♥, six ♦s and four ♣s.
8. With certainty, Declarer led a ♥ to Dummy’s Ace and then led the Jack, trapping East’s Queen. 9. Four ♠s, three ♥s, three ♣s for 10 tricks, and the ♠ game.
NOTE: Declarer could have taken a
successful ♥ finesse against East any time with good odds, but why not be 100% sure?
▶ TIP OF THE DAY I know finesses are 50/50, but there always seems to be a two-way finesse to take. Any clues on which way to go? Avoid playing ‘two-way’ suits as long as possible. Work hard (think). Try to get a count on the other suits to enable a successful finesse.

GET BETTER WITH AGE BY JULIA M. JOHNSON
No one relishes the thought of growing older, but it helps if you think of it as an opportunity to practice better health. Experts say the age-related changes your body and brain undergo can be mitigated with positive thinking and a bit of effort. When you understand the links between physical and mental fitness, the years ahead start to look rosier!
Food for thought
WHY EXERCISE?
It’s no secret that healthy eating is key to a healthy mind, especially as we age. Anthony Lyons, food and beverage director at McKnight Place retirement community, says generational differences present dietary challenges because many residents grew up in ‘meat-and-potatoes’ households with little focus on fresh, natural foods. Still, there are ways to cook what they love and provide the nutritional support their minds and bodies need. STAY HYDRATED. Water is an “Older adults may not want to hear about important nutrient! Drink small plant-based proteins because it’s not what amounts throughout the day. they're used to,” he explains. “Rather than EAT WHOLE FOODS. These can be a hamburger, we can suggest alternatives found in the produce, meat and dairy sections of the grocery store. like a veggie burger and then talk about Keep processed, packaged foods why it’s better.” to a minimum to avoid excess fat, Lyons offers residents healthy cooking sugar, sodium and preservatives. demonstrations to reinforce nutritious DON’T FORGET FIBER. thinking. Variety is key, and an emphasis Fruits, vegetables and whole on whole grains, fresh produce, natural grains are the best natural sources. seasonings, and lower fat and sodium THINK DIETARY DIVERSITY. helps round out a healthy menu, he notes. It explains how much of different beans and other legumes offer protein, foods your body needs. grains add carbs and fiber, and vegetables SOURCE: USDA of different colors provide a rainbow of vitamins and minerals.
We may not always consider how physical activity affects mental health as we age, but the connection is very real, says Jessica Phillips of The Exercise Coach St. Louis. “Being physically active reduces stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol and stimulates production of brain chemicals like endorphins, which act as natural painkillers and mood elevators,” she explains. Phillips, a certified exercise coach, says many adults think of physical activity as simply a weight loss tool, but they should view it more broadly as a way of supporting overall quality of life. “When we talk about the benefits of physical activity, we also should discuss self-image, self-confidence, mood, energy and all of the other factors that feed into mental health,” she notes. “Good brain health also keeps your heart, kidneys and other organs functioning properly, and it affects memory, reflexes, sleep patterns and more. And if you’re not getting enough blood flow to the brain, it may play a role in depression and anxiety. All of these things add up.”
Never too late
Older adults may feel there’s no point in beginning an exercise regimen late in life, but Phillips says that’s a misconception. “It doesn’t matter when you start,” she stresses. “Seniors sometimes are told that they only need to walk for exercise, and that’s beneficial, but it’s not enough. If walking is the only thing you’re doing, you are still losing muscle.” Phillips says older adults should get an assessment from a qualified fitness professional and find out what kind of strength training is appropriate for their age and physical needs. “Don’t wait for your doctor to tell you to be more active,” she says. “You only get one body, so you should take care of it now.”
WHAT IS STRENGTH TRAINING?
It’s a general term for weightlifting and resistance training—exercises that make your muscles work against some type of force. Strength training can help build and maintain bone and muscle tissue in seniors. It also may alleviate issues like arthritis, osteoporosis, fatigue and pain.
SKIN CARE “The aging of skin is both intrinsic (based on genetics) and extrinsic (affected by environmental factors like sun and pollution),” says Dr. Caroline Mann, a Washington University dermatologist. “Your skin loses moisture and elasticity over time, so it’s important to do things to protect it. In the past, people used tanning beds and sunbathed all day without sunscreen.” Results of ultraviolet exposure include wrinkles, discoloration, texture changes and even skin cancer, according to Mann. “Sun damage actually causes cells to mutate, leading to skin cancer,” she notes. “The three different types are named for the types of cells and the skin layer affected.”
Prevent and treat
Staying sharp There is plenty of evidence that social activity supports brain health in seniors. According to the National Institutes of Health, studies show that older adults who are involved in volunteering, hobbies and active social gatherings say they feel happier and healthier than those who don’t. These activities can help the brain establish ‘cognitive reserve,’ a buildup of knowledge and experience that allows it to be more resilient and compensate for age-related changes. A number of organizations like the Jewish Community Center, Area Agency on Aging and AARP can help seniors find opportunities to stay active and engaged.

SOCIAL CONCERNS ■ About one-third of U.S. adults over age 45 report feeling lonely, and that figure is rising. ■ People who are lonely and socially isolated are more likely to have physical health problems. ■ Older adults who volunteer, participate in clubs, travel and attend religious services are less likely to feel lonely. ■ The health risks of prolonged social isolation are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. SOURCE: AARP
Yearly skin checks with your doctor are a good defensive strategy against skin cancer, Mann says, especially if you are over 40, have a family history of it and/or skipped sun protection when you were younger. “We recommend applying a good lotion, cream or gel with at least 30 SPF every day, even if you’re not planning to be outdoors,” she says. “If you are, it’s important to remember that sunlight is most intense between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; still, exposure can happen anytime. UV radiation is coming through the windows as you’re driving, and it’s there even when the sky looks cloudy.”
Maintain
According to Mann, it’s important to apply sunscreen not just on commonly exposed areas like the face and arms, but also on your chest, neck and legs. She says there are some dietary supplements—B vitamins and Heliocare, an antioxidant formula—that may help prevent damage to skin cells. A simple moisturizer like Cetaphil, CeraVe or Neutrogena is a good idea as well. Mann adds that there are ways for older adults to address some effects of past skin indiscretions, including retinol-based creams and treatments using ablative laser energy, intense pulsed light and other technologies. These methods can help smooth the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and discoloration.
WHAT HAPPENS TO SKIN AS YOU AGE? THINNING: Skin doesn’t look or feel as smooth or plump as it used to. Veins and bones become more visible, especially in the hands and feet. PROLONGED HEALING: Bruises and cuts may happen more easily and take longer to resolve. Some medications may make bruising worse. TEXTURE CHANGES: Sun damage and other exposure can contribute to wrinkles, dryness and even cancerous growths. Liver spots and skin tags may appear.
THE 3 TYPES OF SKIN CANCER Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are slow-growing cancers that rarely spread to other parts of the body. They can appear anywhere on the skin but usually are found in areas most exposed to the sun—head, face, neck, hands and arms. Melanoma is a rarer, more dangerous form that can spread to other tissues.
WHAT IS YOUR SKIN SAYING? Check moles, birthmarks and bumps for the ABCDEs of skin cancer: Asymmetry (one half of the growth looks different from the other) Borders that are irregular Color changes Diameter greater than the size of a pencil eraser Evolving characteristics like size, shape, itching, tenderness or bleeding If you see any of these signs, consult your doctor for a screening. LUXE LIVING LOTTMANN REALTY GROUP by stephanie wallace WHAT DO YOU PICTURE WHEN YOU THINK OF A LUXURY PROPERTY? A large estate with gorgeous outdoor spaces? A penthouse in the heart of a walkable community? Or maybe something modern with smart technology? The St. Louis market offers all of that and more. High-end real estate is a complicated, everchanging business, but it’s a challenge the Lottmann Realty Group of Re/Max Suburban Real Estate is more than ready to face. With more than two decades of experience in the local luxury market, the group is perfectly equipped to serve both buyers and sellers. For homeowners looking to sell, its cutting-edge marketing program targets all possible prospects, including those interested in moving but not actively looking. “We use several techniques to create a total experience, including drone footage, aerial shots and 3-D technology,” explains founder Jeff Lottmann. “We ensure that the property being sold is properly spotlighted.” For prospective buyers, Lottmann notes the team has access to a variety of high-end properties, including those that are not yet publicly listed. “Plus, for people who want to build their dream home from the ground up, we have meaningful partnerships with builders, architects and designers,” he adds. “We can provide a truly turnkey experience.” To help clients best navigate the market, Lottmann Realty Group keeps up-todate with the latest trends. “People are no longer downsizing or upsizing; they are right-sizing,” Lottmann says. “Total square footages are becoming smaller but more luxurious.” He adds that buyers are looking for customizable spaces, which means open floor plans and more functionality. “Rooms are defined by furnishings and decor, not walls, and spaces often serve multiple purposes,” he explains. “The days of a formal dining room and sitting room are gone.” Technological advances also are changing the luxury market. Lottmann notes that buyers want smart homes, with whole-house networks and connected monitoring systems. Environmental concerns also are impacting how houses are constructed,
TODAY’S BUYERS WANT OPEN SPACES THEY CAN CUSTOMIZE.
with geothermal heating and cooling and solar power becoming more prevalent. “Today, luxury is about quality of life,” Lottmann says. “The bones of the home are becoming more important. A well-constructed house is more energy-efficient with better indoor air quality.” Lottmann says many of these trends are the result of how millennials’ preferences differ from those of their parents and grandparents. “The younger generation is waiting longer to purchase a house, and when they decide to buy, they focus on amenities and function more than the size of the property,” he explains. Along with multipurpose rooms and home networks for lights and appliances, younger buyers prioritize location and walkability, while older homeowners tend to focus more on aesthetics and beautiful finishes, according to Lottmann. But there are some design elements that appeal to buyers of all ages. “Both generations are interested in an open concept, which is a shift from decades past,” he says. Buying or selling a home can be a difficult process, and dealing with luxury properties only adds to the challenge. Lottmann notes that it is important to have the proper support to ensure you get exactly what you want. “Not every real estate agent can RE AL LIV IN G sell in the ultra-luxury market,” he says. “Do your due diligence and make sure your agent has experience. Discretion, access and knowledge are all important things to consider.” SPEC IAL SECT ION

FANCIFUL PLAYROOMS 〉〉 If you have space in your home for a playroom, you should put just as much effort into its design as the rest of the house. Depending on your children’s interests and energy levels, there are numerous creative options beyond the typical table, chairs and bean bag lounger.
Transform an attic space into a play area. What might feel cramped for an adult is just right for kids.
Teepees and forts never go out of style. Browse a huge selection online to find one that fits your space.
This structure provides places to play on two levels, making it a hit with young children.
Add swings to a room with high ceilings and plenty of space. Just be sure to bolt them to a securely braced beam.
Every little girl wants a playhouse; this one (found on Etsy) is a perfect solution for indoors.
Even if your kids don’t play, chances are a friend will. Used pianos are inexpensive (sometimes even free!), and a coat of paint will make them sing. Kids love to run the counter, so give your budding entrepreneur a real place to do business. *ALL IMAGES ABOVE FROM PINTEREST.COM

Every performer needs a stage! Turn a corner of the room into a spot to put on shows of any sort. It’s elaborate, but if you’ve got active little ones, this rock wall and slide combo will wear them out.
Under the staircase is the perfect unused space to create a small hideaway. A playroom is an opportunity to use color. Kids love vibrant hues that make an area pop!

DEAR HOMEWORK,
My husband and I just purchased a new home. I am interested in getting some ideas on how we can update the exterior and the landscaping. Thank you, —EXCITED FOR SOME IDEAS
DEAR EXCITED FOR SOME IDEAS,
Since you asked for ideas, I’d like to spring a change in architectural direction on you. Currently your home features a columned portico typical of more traditional styles, yet all of the home’s other features feel more midcentury contemporary. I would like to investigate the possibility of removing the portico and intensifying the more modern aspects of the property. To do this, the first step is to make the façade’s near symmetry more obviously asymmetrical. Therefore, I would suggest raising the height of the living room windows to create the façade’s most prominent element. New roof gables at these taller windows and the front door reinforce the new balance. An updated look also is possible for the property’s landscaping. The current smattering of plants is reimagined as bolder arrangements of simple elements. Groupings of birch trees, ornamental grasses, evergreens and flower beds create a new composition that works well with a new entry garden and a reshaped circle drive. To my eyes, these changes bring a new clarity and confidence to the property as well as reveal some concepts that you might not have considered. Thanks for asking, —HOMEWORK

BLOG OF… REFINISHING OUTDATED FLOORS
WE RECENTLY TRANSFORMED RED OAK FLOORS, what many think of as an outdated trend from the early 2000s, into beautiful whitewashed ones. We know this can be a hard task, and based on the number of questions we received about it, we realized we had to share our process! ▶ Step 1: Do your research. There are so many stain varieties, it’s important to know what look you want to achieve before you reach out to a contractor or take on the transformation yourself. If you have any extra wood from your home, we suggest testing different stain samples to see the results. Remember that all grains of wood are different, so every stain will look a little different depending on what you’re starting with. ▶ Step 2: Hire the right contractor. Since refinishing floors can be a hard process and one that may require a few extra steps, it’s important to consult a contractor beforehand to get an accurate price estimate. Hire someone you trust, and show them the color you want. We have found that a lot of contractors like to stick to what they have done in the past or steer away from flooring stains that might be more difficult, so make sure you are upfront about the results you expect and the stains you want to use. ▶ Step 3: The process (sand and stain) We were working with 3-inch red oak floors from 2004. They originally were stained a natural honey color followed by a layer of polyurethane. Finishing products are not all created equal, and some tend to become amber or ‘orange’ over time. Some people might have ripped up these floors and put in a new engineered style, but that tends to be a bit more expensive and we wanted to keep what the clients had in the house. The first step is to sand the floors completely. After that, it’s on to the stain. We used Antique White CB-1023 by EZStains (which can be found online at ezstains.com). We originally tested a clear coat, but the floors still had a red/orange tint to them. The biggest challenge with red oak is its natural red hue, which, when you are attempting to go a lighter shade, can appear pink. We used the antique white to cut down on this. ▶ Step 4: Glaze Next, we went over the floors with a wiping stain, Pickling White by Old Masters. You wipe it on against the grain and then wipe it off. The opaque white pigment stays in the grain when you wipe it off to create a whitewashed look. ▶ Step 5: The finish We finished with Masters Armor in a flat finish by Old Masters. It usually requires about two coats, but it makes your floors durable and delivers a beautiful matte finish. (Most polyurethanes are a satin or high-gloss finish, so we particularly love this matte option.) A lot of polyurethanes also are known to yellow over time, but this one does not.

When you are ready to live well!
Doug Cohen has been in the real estate business for more than 32 years. He began his career renovating homes for 12 years. His expertise in quality and elegant finishes led him to start his own custom home building company, Douglas Properties, in 1998. Under his leadership, Douglas Properties has developed a solid reputation for building luxury homes in the central corridor, including Olivette, Frontenac, Creve Coeur, Ladue, Richmond Heights and Clayton. The company also has built several mid-rise condominium buildings, two in Clayton located on Brighton Way and Cromwell Drive and one in University City at 900 N. McKnight Road. During the 2018 calendar year, Douglas Properties built 10 homes, an impressive number for what Cohen describes as an “infill builder and a one-man shop.” He notes that the secret is to generally use the same subcontractors on each project. “This way, they learn how I expect them to perform,” he says. 50 MORWOOD CREVE COEUR
9644 OLD BONHOMME OLIVETTE
Cohen’s wife of 17 years, Esther, also is involved with the company, selecting all finishes for spec homes. It’s an arrangement that he says resembles an HGTV reality show. “I focus on trying to curtail over-budget selections, and she complains when over-budget items are set to be rejected!” He laughs that she usually wins the argument, and they end up looking stunning in the home. Douglas Properties is enjoying another banner year in 2019. The company is ready to break ground on five homes, all yet to be sold. Two of the homes are located in Olivette and will be listed from $800,000 to $1.2 million. One home is located in Ladue and will be offered for $995,000, One home is in Creve Coeur for $1,100,000. Douglas Properties has one home ready for occupancy located in Creve Coeur on Colonial Hills Parkway for $1.495,000. All of the above homes are located within the Ladue school district boundaries!
