The organization placed pianos decorated by local artists in various locations around the city for Make Music Day STL. Coffee Cartel, Straub’s in the Central West End, and the National Blues Museum were some of the lucky drop-off spots.

The arts organization hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for a 44,000-square-foot expansion and extensive renovations to its headquarters in U. City. More big news: Retired business owner and philanthropist Kim Kuehner donated $5 million to the Create Our Future Campaign, bringing the total raised to $41 million!

Caleb’s journey was just the beginning of a struggle that could have gone either way. “My doctor baptized him at birth,” his mother Staci Ortbals says. “Everybody thought he was not going to make it.” When Caleb was born at a St. Louis area hospital, he inhaled blood and developed a hole in his lungs — a life-threatening issue. Caleb was immediately flown to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, where he was placed on an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine (ECMO) in the pediatric intensive care unit. The procedure allowed the heart and lungs to rest while recovering from an injury or infection. “We finally got to hold him when he was 6 days old. Just a few minutes after Caleb was born, his obstetrician came in to baptize him; I understood then how severe he was,” said Staci. “But he was able to quickly get the level of care that he needed. I can’t imagine my life without that helicopter ride to Cardinal Glennon. The transport team saved my baby’s life.”

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK IT’S NO SECRET THAT I AM TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH MY KIDS. Being a mom was always a dream of mine, and I got

extremely lucky with my first two. I am fully aware that the minor sibling squabbles, tantrums from being overly tired, and days when everything I say gets lost in translation are nothing compared to what I could be dealing with. Besides, the good stuff—the constant snuggles and family group hugs, our adventurous family spirit, and the absolute joy I get from watching my kids live and grow—far outweighs any ‘off’ day. So, what could be better than adding even more love to our house? Yes, I’m sharing the news that my husband and I are expecting. If you’re my daughter, you’ll scream in excitement for about five minutes … especially when you find out it’s a girl. Being pregnant with my third is different; life with a 9- and 6-year-old is busy! We’re always going and doing, and school and the kids’ activities won’t take a hiatus just because I’ll be desperately trying to keep up. Naps are still nonexistent for me, or even just sitting still for a few minutes. And the sparkling water instead of a glass of wine after a long day? Not cutting it. But, when I’m exhausted or terrified about how I will ‘do it all,’ something knocks me out of it. My son will hug my belly to say good morning to the little person inside; the kids will get excited to read our weekly email about how big the baby is; or my daughter will check in with me to make sure both of us are feeling well. Better yet, my husband will reassure me that I am strong and capable and that our family is the greatest thing that has happened to him. It’s these moments when I realize I can handle another cute face in the bunch. So this fall, I’ll have to bow out for a little while. I am more than confident that my staff and the rest of the Town&Style crew will keep things running smoothly until I return. In the meantime, I’ll stay busy and try to stay calm.

IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE LOSING CONTROL OF YOUR MUSCLES AND LIMBS, but for

those with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), it’s a daily reality. Often associated with baseball legend Lou Gehrig, the condition causes the neurons that control voluntary muscles to progressively die, and it currently affects thousands of Americans. While there is no cure, continuing research and updated therapies offer help and hope—and the ALS Association St. Louis Regional Chapter is part of that effort, says president and CEO Maureen Barber Hill. In 2014, the national ALS Association captured headlines with its highly successful Ice Bucket Challenge, a playful social media campaign in which participants raised donations by posting videos of themselves getting doused with ice. The effort injected $115 million into the association’s research and patient care budget, and nearly $100 million of that has been committed to various projects, Hill says. In 2015, the St. Louis chapter took the ice bucket concept a step further, turning it into an annual fundraising event complete with local celebrities in the ‘cold seat.’ (Yes, that’s who gets ‘dumped on’ during the evening.) This year’s Ice Bucket Bash is slated for Nov. 16 at the Four Seasons, with Kim and Joe Koenig serving as event co-chairs and cocktail hour entertainment provided by St. Louis native Erin Bode and her band. Proceeds will help fund ALS programs in eastern Missouri and central and southern Illinois that offer physical, emotional and financial support. “When a person is diagnosed with ALS, the cost to his or her family can be up to $250,000 per year,” Hill explains. “Our goal is to improve quality of life through case management, counseling, caregiver relief, loaning medical equipment, and nutritional and clinical support.” Hill says the Ice Bucket Bash dress code is ‘casual cool,’ and the party promises to be an evening of laughter and fun. “Don’t expect the same old auction and chicken dinner at this event,” she jokes. “We’ve put that idea on ice! This year’s celebrities are a secret for now, but they will be revealed before the end of the summer.” Past notables have included former St. Louis Blues players Brett Hull and Bernie Federko and the St. Louis Cardinals’ John Mozeliak. The celebs sit on chairs in kiddie pools, and guests compete for the chance to ice them down on stage. “They really engage with the audience,” Hill says. “It might be the highest bidder who gets to do the dousing, or it could be a CEO’s employees who shower her with ice. It’s a lot of fun because it all evolves organically during the evening.” It’s not just patients who benefit from the chapter’s fundraising efforts. Family members are cared for as well through important respite and support initiatives. “Event proceeds help us expand our in-home caregiver relief services,” Hill says. “We would love to triple the amount of assistance we can offer through that program.” There is a real sense of urgency to find a cure for ALS because a diagnosis usually means a life expectancy of just two to five years, according to Hill. “The 2014 challenge allowed our national association to triple the amount of money invested in research,” she says. “As a result, five ALS-related genes have been identified in the past four years, and the first new ALS drug in two decades has been approved by the FDA. These developments are a big deal, and we think they signal an exciting new chapter in the fight against ALS.” &

TALK OF THE TOWNS billbeggs beggsjr.jr. bybybill

Sept. 30.) The Fountain, between Grand and Jefferson in Midtown at 3037 Locust St., is stunning inside, with Art Deco-inspired wall art and fixtures. Built in 1916, the building was once a Stutz dealership. And you don’t have to be tipsy to enjoy the ambience. Take it from me: It’s a charming place to take a date after a concert at The Fabulous Fox by a band she’d never heard of—and loathed enough to make us leave early.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY 〉〉

THE HILL〉〉

You could call it ‘the square beyond compare.’* Piazza Imo, an Italian-inspired plaza to be installed in front of St. Ambrose Church on The Hill, will be approximately 11,000 square feet when completed this fall. Thanks to a major donation by Marge and Ed Imo of Imo’s Pizza, the planning committee sought and received a 501(c)(3) designation, which allowed them to purchase two vacant lots directly across from St. Ambrose. Some planned features include: a marble fountain and granite walkways imported from Italy; ornamental gates; and gathering places and spaces, including granite benches, an Italianinspired grotto, several prayer gardens, and landscaping in and around the piazza. Along with the zoo and the Arch, hometowners typically take visitors up to the The Hill for lunch or dinner (there’s Chris’ Pancake & Dining for breakfast, too), arguably home to the best Italian food in the Midwest give or take a family establishment here and there around the metro. Here’s a little more local Italian patois for anyone who’s just passing through The Lou: *A favored pizza here is Imo’s, famously topped with provel cheese and cut into bite-sized squares, thus the trademarked catch phrase above. (Metro folks scoff at deep-dish Chicago pies as a poor facsimile for ‘pizza.’) Anyhow, anyone whose Italian is limited to proper nouns like Imo’s, Kim Tucci’s Pasta House, Favazza’s or Cunetto’s might not suss out that ‘piazza’ translates into ‘square.’ So, let’s eat … and by fall, please take a seat ‘for granite.’

Through a journalism project at U. City High School, seniors connected with seniors to chronicle the lives of older adults. The intergenerational collaboration resulted in ‘Engage at Every Age,’ a display of the resulting biographical stories and photos at U. City Public Library in May. As part of the process, the students interviewed senior citizens and

conducted school tours. Following the library event, a participating professor posted the story a student wrote about him on his Facebook page, and he received more than 100 comments. We surmise that senior citizens don’t count ‘likes’ as much as students would. Further, we posit that they don’t follow social media on their cellphones. These devices are chiefly for conversations … you know, making and receiving calls. Texting? Fuhgeddaboudit.

The Fountain on Locust, self-proclaimed as the ‘Most Photographed Restaurant in St. Louis,’ is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a contest that could win you an ice cream martini party for 10. To me, that’s about as tempting as a pineapple-pumpkin chocolate stout from one of the innumerable craft breweries in the metro. But then, I’m a vanilla kind of guy. Say you have a mouthwatering or jaw-dropping ice cream story? Are there pictures to prove it? We see plenty of ice cream drama play out on the Interwebs: There’s a whole passel of videos of dogs eating ice cream, from snatching the scoop off of a baby’s cone to slobbering it all over themselves. If your story is selected, it will be featured online and on the menu, and you’ll get a free ice cream martini or ice cream sundae. Plus, you’ll be entered into a drawing for the ice cream martini party. (Entry deadline:

Today there are only as many municipalities in the county as there are keys on a piano … 88. Only, you exclaim?! If your eyebrows just popped straight up to the middle of your forehead because that number still seems astronomical … where’d they find the room? ... it’s actually 10 fewer than there were in 1959. MacKenzie Village, all 12 acres and some 134 souls, has dissolved; the paperwork to make it official was supposed to have been completed by June 25. We’ll give you a moment to shed a tear and sniffle a little. The village has been absorbed into the unincorporated county at large. Near the erstwhile village but not within it, MacKenzie Pointe Plaza on Watson Road honors its memory, or something like that. Not to worry, village lovers. Just a little farther west on Watson is the Village of Marlborough. Now, if you still think the county has just too dang many local government entities, it’s nothing compared to our sworn enemies to the northeast. That dastardly major-league baseball team that must not be called by name plays in Cook County, Illinois, home to Chicago … and 134 other municipalities. I’m sure that up there, as well as down here, some municipalities are just plain grifters. But to our credit, we’ve had fewer incarcerated governors in the Show-Me State. Anybody get pulled over in North County on I-170 along the 50 yards in Charlack? Maybe it’s more like 55 yards, but if you blink, you miss it. There used to be such a place in South County called St. George, which I actually visited once and left without a speeding ticket. Not surprisingly, there are two other saints in the county (not to be confused with the city itself and its own intricate network of neighborhoods): St. Ann and St. John. The municipality with the largest population is Chesterfield, with nearly 47,000 residents. Wildwood has the largest area: 66 square miles. The smallest settlement is in North County, with 12 residents and three-tenths of a square mile in area. Its name? Champ. TT TRIVIA | WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING ARE ACTUALLY AMONG THE 88 MUNICIPALITIES REMAINING IN THE COUNTY? VINITA TERRACE, O’FALLON, BEL-NOR, EUREKA, SLAYTOWN, SPANISH LAKE, BLACK JACK, VELDA VILLAGE HILLS, GUMBO FLATS. (HINT: FOUR OF THESE EITHER NO LONGER EXIST OR NEVER DID IN THE FIRST PLACE.) LAST ISSUE’S ANSWER | TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA, THE IRRATIONAL FEAR OF THE NUMBER 13, IS A PECULIARITY OF BUILDING CONSTRUCTION THAT’S MOST OBVIOUS IN THE ELEVATORS. LAKE ST. LOUIS 〉〉

When she was 22, Mairead ‘Ivy’ Iverson gave her dad a gift that’s kept on giving … for more than 14 years: a healthy kidney. The living kidney donor and her dad, Don Iverson, 61, have a special bond to celebrate every Father’s Day, every other holiday, and just any plain old ordinary day. Don’s polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a genetic condition typically passed from parent to child, ultimately would have led to kidney failure caused by uncontrollable cyst growth. He would have had to go on dialysis were it not for the pre-emptive transplant, which is the best path to longterm health, if possible, Ivy says. (She’s become quite an expert herself, which we’ll get to in a minute.) Ivy doesn’t have PKD, and neither do her two kids: son Nolan, 11, and daughter Rogue, 5. “Hopefully they’ll consider becoming donors later in life,” says Ivy, now 36. One way or the other, each and every member of the Iverson clan has to cope with PKD. “We’re either donors or recipients,” Ivy says. “My grandfather died on dialysis. One of my aunts has had two living-donor transplants but was on dialysis for a time between

the two.” Neither Ivy nor her two siblings inherited PKD, despite the 50 percent chance of a parent passing it on. But who knows how many others in the family will? It’s been luck of the draw. Ivy never will forget how overwhelmed she was to see her dad not too long after he got her kidney: Don was absolutely aglow. The dramatic improvement in his health stoked her passion about the donor and transplant process. And she went all in: Today, she’s an RN and the abdominal transplant coordinator at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. Her husband, Ryan, who works in the radiology department at St. Luke’s Hospital, is just as invested in the future as his bride. After all, one or both of his children may one day have to make the decision to become a donor. Ivy says it’s a dream job to share her experience, strength and hope with anyone affected by PKD. She’s a volunteer and speaks at local PKD Foundation chapter meetings

to promote better awareness and understanding of the disease. Meanwhile, on April 24, the FDA approved Jynarque (jin-AR-kew), aka tolvaptan, as the first U.S. treatment for adult patients with rapidly progressing autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. Although the drug is not a cure, strides toward better controlling PKD are being made. The drug and others to come may make a difference for future generations of Iversons. Ivy, for her part, is very happy things turned out the way they have. “I’m so thankful and especially blessed that my kids have a grandfather in their lives.” &

THE INSIDER A GLIMPSE AT WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND ST. LOUIS AND BEYOND. &

PATTY by patty hannum I HUGGED JOE BIDEN. TWICE. He was in

St. Louis last month for his book tour Promise Me, Dad, and my daughter and I got to speak with him for about two minutes and get our picture taken. It is fantastic of her and Joe and awful of me, but it still will be placed on my dresser next to the pictures of my kids, husband and best friends. Yes, I am a Joe Biden fangirl. Before you start to email me that I must be insane to embrace his politics or I shouldn’t talk about politics in this type of publication, there are a few things you should know. First, I was never told I couldn’t write about politics, so if this gets me fired, as Justin Timberlake would say, “bye, bye, bye.” And I have always been a liberal—never closeted. I read a ton, understand issues and policies, and am not influenced just by what the party says. I am respectful of other people’s opinions. Public discourse works when it is done thoughtfully and without name calling. Friends should be able to disagree about politics without it ruining their friendships. Now back to Joe. No one should make fun of Joe around me. He is on a very short list that includes my son and daughter. I hope you notice that means you can make fun of my husband and all of my siblings. I know it's weird to include a former vice president on this list, especially someone who I only spent two minutes with and was so overwhelmed, I hugged him twice. Fortunately, I don’t think he has Secret Service protection anymore, so I was not hustled across the street to the police department. So, what is it about Joe Biden? Joe is a decent and kind man who has lost so much in his life. He lost his wife and young daughter in a car accident when he was just 29 years old, leaving him to raise his two sons on his own for five years, and more recently, his 46-year-old son lost his battle with brain cancer. I can’t imagine. Yet, I can. There is a small club of parents who I think of as the ‘almosts.' Several years ago, in the middle of the night, I got a call asking if I was the mother of my son. It was a hospital in Phoenix. My son had been in a car accident and was on a ventilator with severe brain injuries. They asked how soon I could get there. I will not get into the details out of respect for my son, but that accident changed me and my family forever. I almost lost my little boy; he was 21 at the time, so I guess he wasn’t so little. I didn’t because of some great physicians and his strong desire to live. But there is not a day that goes by that I don’t say a little thank you to the world for letting me keep him. It astounds me that Joe Biden can get out of bed in the morning after burying two children and his wife. I know how hard things were for me in the aftermath of my son’s accident. But he does it because he believes so strongly that he can make a difference in a country that he loves. Joe might not be a man you would vote for, but he is a kind and decent man who provides much comfort to the ‘almosts’ and those who have lost children. And because of that, he will remain on my list with my kids.

A dedicated reader recently asked me about services available to backup her computer. Her current service, CrashPlan, now is offering its services only to small businesses, so she wanted to know what I use to backup my laptop. Actually, I haven’t made an image of my entire system. If my computer completely crashes, I typically just buy a new one. All of the software I use is cloud based and easy to download. I keep all of my files in the cloud using a syncing service such as Dropbox, Google Drive or our private work storage. But as I started researching the options, I found some alternatives to my current disaster plan.

is backed up automatically. You don’t have to specify where to save files because the term ‘cloud’ means you are saving it over the internet to a computer located in a secure data center. After doing some research and reading many reviews, the two to consider are iDrive and BackBlaze. Both are reasonably priced, work with Windows or Mac and have similar features, and they are good options for small businesses as well. The process starts by creating an account and downloading the appropriate software. The BackBlaze sign-up and backup process was much

12 |

less complicated, but it was easier to see my options with iDrive. A cautionary word of advice: When you start your initial backup, be prepared to keep your computer on the network for a while. BackBlaze estimated the time to backup my computer was five days (even after I got off my phone hotspot) due to the free trial version I was using. It took about 10 minutes to backup 500MB on the free version of iDrive. Both options require you to do some configuration or have lots of patience!

➧External hard drives are a good option if you don’t

want to backup your computer to the cloud because of security concerns. They are relatively inexpensive now (one TB is around $50) and let you control where your data is stored. You must keep it connected to your computer or remember to use it with your laptop periodically. You also can connect an external hard drive or a network storage device (NAS) to your network router. Hopefully this spurs you to think about backing up your information (especially all of those digital photos and videos). Please continue to share your questions and ideas for technology topics you want to learn about. It’s always great to hear from readers, and it’s fun exploring different topics!

LEISHA RITTER & BREVIN MCVICAR

OCTOBER 6, 2017

by julia m. johnson | photos by dani brewer photography LEISHA RITTER SAYS HER WEDDING TO BREVIN MCVICAR was full of personal touches that

all added up to a very memorable event. From writing their own vows to choosing centerpieces, the pair took a ‘do-it-yourself’ approach. Leisha says the result was a celebration that reflected their personalities and their priorities. “Brevin and I are both Christians, so it was important for us to make the ceremony’s message about the roles of a husband and wife,” she says. “We wanted our family and friends to know what commitment means to us.” Each wrote a speech for the ceremony, and neither knew what the other was going to say until that moment. “It was such a nice surprise to hear what he had written,” Leisha recalls. “That was my favorite part of the night.” They held both the wedding and reception at Jefferson Underground in Benton Park, a unique venue that features a scenic rooftop space. The bride is an interior designer and says she happily took the event’s creative decisions into her own hands. “My mom and I enjoy working on projects together, so we did as much of it as we could and included a lot of greenery and natural elements,” Leisha says. “There were many trips to Hobby Lobby and thrift stores. We spent so much time shopping that I still find myself looking for those things when I walk into a store!” They put together a collection of mismatched brass candlesticks and other eclectic touches for the reception tables, which worked well with the venue’s exposed brick and wood decor, Leisha says. “We displayed photos of the different phases of our relationship throughout the space,” she adds. “Our guests really enjoyed looking at them.” Friends and relatives made cookies and cake pops for the reception, and the bride chose white flowers with leafy green accents to complement her attendants’ dusty maroon gowns. After the wedding, the couple departed for a honeymoon in Mexico. “Our big day was wonderful, but with all of the planning, moving and both of us starting new jobs, we needed a break!” Leisha says. “Normally we’re pretty adventurous when we travel, but we spent this trip just enjoying the beach and recharging.” Leisha, a Westminster Christian Academy and University of Missouri-Columbia grad, works at Gray Design Group. Brevin, who attended Francis Howell High School and Lindenwood University, is an account manager for TEKsystems. They live in the Tower Grove South neighborhood. &

DOROTHY TOWN by dorothy weiner

IT’S HUMAN NATURE TO WONDER what our cultural icons

are really like. That, surely, is one reason why so many St. Louisans came to the art museum to hear Martha Stewart speak about her new book, Martha’s Flowers. The maven of all things folksy, foodie and flowery was actually very relaxed and approachable, dressed in jeggings and wedge sandals and even cracking an off-color joke or two. She and collaborator Kevin Sharkey spoke during a Q&A session conducted by museum director Brent Benjamin. With 80 books to her credit, Stewart ought to be relaxed. This latest tome, focusing on all things garden, has gorgeous floral arrangements created with blooms from gardens at Stewart’s homes in Bedford, New York, and Seal Harbor, Maine. In the hour-long interview, Stewart said she proudly designs her own gardens, an impressive task considering the acreage. She has populated her gardens with the kinds of flowers her grandmother had, mostly traditional blooms. “I don’t grow a lot of exotica,” she said. “I grow from seed and cuttings— you learn a lot about patience from gardening.” She told one story about buying a slew of hydrangeas that segued into discussion about her being the consummate entrepreneur. “Starting a business really means being passionate about something and asking, ‘How can I make life better with this passion?’” She said writing her first book, Entertaining, was the beginning of a new career for her. “I felt so good about it—suddenly I had a voice!” Stewart has been interested in gardening since childhood, when she was the only one of six children to take up her father’s hobby. “Dad was very organized about his garden,” she recalled. “He was the least patient man ever, but not when it came to gardening.” She recalled recently finding (and using) a vial of French lavender seeds labeled 1952 in her father’s handwriting. A question about growing vegetables elicited anecdotal information. “I grow so many different vegetables,” Stewart said. “My chickens run around the garden all winter long, so it’s great dirt: they scratch it, poop in it and eat all the bugs!” She also likes to use the flowers of herbs like borage, thyme and rosemary as food, but said “remember to never spray—and make your own compost!” She also “loves coyotes” for obvious reasons when you consider the havoc bunnies, squirrels and “other varmints” can wreak on the garden. As for advice to those of us who don’t have two green thumbs, Stewart said, “Landscape first, then garden.” In other words, planning and soil preparation are paramount. And how about keeping our floral arrangements looking as perfect as those in her book? “Change your water all of the time. And no additives, except a little bleach—you can use vodka or gin in the case of tulips. Don’t ever throw out a leftover martini. It’ll perk up those tulips perfectly— the opposite effect as with you know what!”

FLY IN STYLE JET LINX ST. LOUIS by stephanie wallace

WITH SUMMER IN FULL SWING, WEEKEND GETAWAYS AND RELAXING VACATIONS

are on the minds of many St. Louisans. The allure of travel is undeniable, but much less appealing is the idea of braving crowded airports, waiting in baggage and security lines, and facing potential flight delays. For those looking for an alternative to commercial flights, Jet Linx St. Louis offers a personalized, local approach to private jet travel. Jet Linx has 17 bases nationwide and a fleet of 100 airplanes to help get its clients from point A to point B comfortably and without hassle. Base president Rich Ropp notes that these resources allow the company to offer an experience completely different from commercial travel. “We tailor every aspect to passengers’ preferences,” Ropp says. “From the personal greeting when you arrive at our private terminal to having your vehicle ready to go rampside when you return, it’s all about the details and full VIP experience.” Ropp explains that Jet Linx works to remember client information, from what drinks and snacks they like on the plane to the make and model of their preferred rental car. “If we know you’re celebrating a special occasion, we’ll put together something to help you really enjoy the moment,” Ropp adds. He says there is a simple reason the Jet Linx team can provide a superior experience over commercial airlines and their national competitors: “We’re local; they’re not.” He notes that the company’s St. Louis presence allows it to forge a deeper connection with clients. “People aren’t calling a 1-800 number when they book a trip with us,” Ropp says. “Local team members work with them throughout the entire process, which creates a level of trust.” That trust is further bolstered by Jet Linx’s unwavering safety standards, the highest in the industry, according to Ropp. The company’s dedication to serving St. Louis isn’t limited to ensuring every flight runs smoothly. It’s also committed to giving back to the community in several ways. With a private, stand-alone facility, Ropp says Jet Linx can open its doors (literally) to charitable organizations by hosting fundraisers. “Each event offers a deep, meaningful connection to the community,” he explains, adding that the nonprofits receive the benefit of a truly unique venue. “Guests can look out at the sunset with a glass of wine and watch planes take off. It’s a really cool backdrop, and we hope it draws people in and encourages them to support the cause.” Ropp is on the board of directors for Wings of Hope, a local aviation nonprofit that offers humanitarian programs around the world. Its Medical Relief and Air Transport program provides free transport to individuals in the Midwest who need specialized medical care unavailable to them at home. “My team and I are thrilled to have opportunities to get involved with local groups,” Ropp says. “It makes our relationship with the St. Louis community that much stronger.” &

THE POPULAR FILIPINO RESTAURANT HAS OPENED A NEW SPOT, its fourth, in The Loop,

just a couple of blocks east of Skinker Boulevard. The roomy storefront is the largest of them all, much bigger than the original Grand Boulevard spot, and it has a more upscale ambience. For one thing, you’re not sitting on top of other diners; for another, the menu is considerably bigger, making the place feel less fast-casual and more sit-down dining. As at the Grand location, the menu is noticeably pork-centric, with a fair number of vegetarian dishes. Chicken and seafood are scarce, and only a couple of beef offerings are available. The flavors are on the Asian side, utilizing oyster, fish and soy sauces, coconut milk and jasmine rice. We started with some of the new dishes not available on Grand: Salted Duck Egg Toast, Lumpia Hubad and Kinilaw. The toast ($6) was reminiscent of bruschetta, but with Asian flavors. A thick slice of Union Loafers bread is spread with the rich yolk of a duck egg and topped with the chopped whites, slivers of red onion and fish sauce. The Lumpia Hubad ($4) was good as a serving of two lettuce cups filled with slivered veggies and fresh flavors: garlic, jicama, mint and peanut sauce were the highlights of these guilt-free Asian ‘rolls.’ The Kinilaw ($8), a sliced scallop dish, was less successful and more like a plate of fussy ingredients. What amounted to one scallop, thinly sliced, came with slivered watermelon radish, mango and ‘crab fat emulsion,’ an orange puree with good flavor. A few rice crackers with black sesame sat on the plate, as well as a spicy sauce of coconut milk mixed with vinegar. The star of the night was a fairly traditional udon dish, Pancit Udon ($9), a generous plateful of the thick, meaty noodles tossed with plenty of oil and soy sauce and dotted with cabbage, carrots and delicious squid balls. Beef Mechado ($8 or $10) from the old menu resembles beef stew in a somewhat bland tomato paste base. For a remarkably filling and tasty dinner, try Crispy Pata ($10), a large serving of pork shank, braised and very well-crisped, sitting in a creamy puree of garlic confit. The meat was delicious (but baked very dry), and an accompanying pile of fermented cucumbers, onions and peppers added a little variety. Don’t miss the vegetable sides listed along the bottom of the menu. Most are peculiar and tempting, especially for the more adventurous diner, like Spicy Dillis ($3), a serving of dried and spiced anchovies, and Mango with Bagoong ($3), fruit with fermented seafood paste. My favorite was the Adobong Sitaw ($5), a delicious saute of fresh green beans and shiitake mushrooms. For the perfect end-of-meal treat, try Ube Taho, a sweet ‘drink’ of coconut milk, house-made tofu, tapioca pearls and jam—delicious! &

AGING:

THE PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS BY RICK STOFF

WHEN YOU’RE A KID, GETTING OLDER SEEMS MAGICAL: fewer restrictions and more freedom! As an adult, however, you realize that aging brings with it quite a few concerns, some you might not have thought about. To keep enjoying life, you have to make healthy choices and stay active. Below are suggestions from local experts on how to adapt and maintain.

SKIN CARE:

DO YOU NEED TO SWITCH PRODUCTS?

Might there come a time to move on from your trustworthy and beloved skin products? “Often the skin changes with age, and how it responds to products changes,” says Carol Anderson, RN, CANS, certified aesthetic nurse specialist and owner of Nouveau, A Boutique MedSpa in Kirkwood. “When people have loved the same products forever, they can miss those changes. One day they look in the mirror and say, ‘Wow! What happened?’ What they used five years ago is probably not what they need today.” Although time ages the skin, Anderson says sun exposure is responsible for 90 percent of damage. “Health issues, nutrition, sleep, diet and lifestyle also determine how much collagen breaks down,” she says. “We can protect our skin with sunscreen, a healthy diet, and internal and topical Vitamin C. Tretinoin, a prescription version of Retin-A, will cause cellular turnover and create new collagen. Topical products that have a combination of alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids can create collagen, too.” Collagen maintains the firmness of the underlying tissues that keep the skin’s surface smooth and soft, Anderson notes. “We always need new collagen to keep the skin supple and avoid crepiness. The biggest collagen stimulation will come from deeper treatments with heat and light, like laser, infrared or radiofrequency.” A care provider who understands evolving skin can help fine-tune your regimen, she says. “As we age, we need to change the way we treat. Even after three months, we will reassess and may alter the nutrients and products we recommend for your skin.”

VACCINES:

WHAT IS RECOMMENDED?

The aging immune system may not be ‘broken,’ but it’s likely wearing down. Even if you received all of the recommended vaccinations earlier in life (or caught the common childhood diseases), you may be due for booster shots and new vaccines. “Up to age 65, unless you develop a chronic disease, the immune system mostly stays very healthy,” says Dr. John Morley, a SLUCare geriatrician and director of the division of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “A vaccine helps your immune system recognize a challenge it has been exposed to in the past so it will respond quicker and kill off the challenge. As we get older, our immunity becomes lethargic. The memory cells disappear or decrease in number.” For that reason, it is recommended that some vaccinations be repeated, Morley says.

IMPORTANT VACCINES: Pneumococcal vaccines have to be renewed even if you had them as a child. For adults 65 or older, the CDC recommends PCV13 for those who previously haven’t had it and PPSV23 one year later. The DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus) vaccination should be scheduled every 10 years. Morley says if you have had chicken pox, you still need to get the shingles vaccine. The new Shingrex vaccine for herpes zoster should be given to everyone over the age of 50. Despite years of it not appearing to help, an annual influenza vaccination is important. “Future vaccines should be improved,” Morley notes. “As you get older, influenza can kill you. Scientists are working on quicker-to-develop vaccines that will work against strains we are most likely to have.”

ALCOHOL:

IS THAT EXTRA GLASS OF WINE STILL OK? Fine wines improve with age, but our ability to metabolize them doesn’t. “As we get older, alcohol tends to have an increased impact on our health,” says Craig McKnight, director of MediNurse, a provider of private-duty nursing care for the St. Louis area. “The rate of metabolic consumption slows down, so little to moderate drinking can have greater effects. It’s important to consider a person’s weight, medications and medical conditions. Unfortunately, alcohol abuse is an often overlooked problem in seniors, and symptoms can be misdiagnosed as other health conditions.” While some research studies report that moderate drinking can have a positive general health impact, this may not apply to seniors. Age-related physical changes alone reduce the body’s tolerance for alcohol, McKnight says. For older adults facing illnesses or chronic ailments or taking medications (even over-the-counter ones), any amount of alcohol can exacerbate health conditions and, in extreme cases, cause death. “It causes changes in the heart and blood vessels, which are capable of dulling pain that could be a warning sign for other health conditions,” McKnight says. For healthy seniors, moderate drinking is considered to be ½ to 1 ounce of pure alcohol daily for women and 2 ounces for men. This equates to about a 12-ounce beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits.

Get a $25 gift card when you tour the J!* TEETH: TAKING CARE OF AN AGING MOUTH Your teeth and dental work are meant to be permanent but not maintenance-free, says Dr. Scott Mahlin, a dentist and oral surgeon at Clarkson Dental Group in Chesterfield. “Ongoing, continued dental care is important for overall health,” he notes. Dental cavities are not only afflictions of childhood. Gum disease can occur at any age, and the aging mouth brings additional concerns that may affect more than the teeth and gums. “There is a definitive mouth-body connection,” Mahlin says. “Many people are unaware that gum disease,

or destruction of the gums and surrounding bone, may affect your general health.” The American Dental Association (ADA) advises older adults that their dental care is even more important than it was during their early years. “Your mouth changes as you age,” Mahlin notes. “The nerves in your teeth can become smaller, making your teeth less sensitive to cavities or other problems. If you don’t get regular dental exams, you can have problems that aren’t diagnosed until it is too late. If cared for properly, your teeth can last a lifetime.”

FEET: WHAT IS THE BEST SUPPORT? Your favorite old, comfy shoes might be broken in too much to support your aging feet, says Dr. Richard Brickhouse, a podiatric surgeon who practices at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. “Generally, as people age, they have changes in their joint structure and foot architecture,” he notes. “With certain foot types, you can get deformities such as hammertoes and bunions. A lot of that is hereditary.” In the absence of a diagnosed condition, seniors should wear a stable shoe that is fairly rigid, Brickhouse says. “You want to prevent any sort of progressive problem or ligament strains,” he notes. He recommends

shoe stores that employ a therapeutic shoe fitter, such as one certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics. “People who have arthritis, diabetes, flat feet or high arches may need to wear special shoes, orthotics or braces to reduce the progress of these problems,” he says. Brickhouse strongly advises against wearing high heels. “A long-term effect of high heels is tightening of the Achilles tendon because it is in a contracted condition, and that can lead to other problems and deformities,” he explains. &

HOMEWORK

DEAR HOMEWORK,

Our house has been a great family home for the last 14 years, and we love its location and interior layout. But we would appreciate your opinion on how to enhance its curb appeal. It was built midcentury with elements of traditional styling. The exterior is not as welcoming as we would like it to be. Our taste leans toward traditional or transitional, which is more in line with most of the houses in our neighborhood. We would love to revamp the landscaping, increase outdoor lighting and perhaps add more importance to the front entry. I realize the shutters on the main part of the house are likely too narrow for the windows, but I don’t know what the alternative would be. French doors? We would consider painting the brick. Can you help? Sincerely, —TRAPPED BETWEEN TWO STYLES

DEAR TRAPPED BETWEEN TWO STYLES,

As you note, your home is a blend of modern and traditional features. Since you would feel more comfortable sending it in a more traditional direction, the Federal or Regency period of Georgian architecture is a good option. It features simple, more ‘modern’ detailing. Beyond that, it would be nice to give the façade a bit of oomph. I think your suggestion of painting the brick would be a big help. A medium warm gray would provide a sharp contrast to the white trim details. I ditched the “too narrow” shutters for a cleaner, ‘more Regency’ look but restated the crisp black in new railings and flower boxes. At your suggestion, I turned the main windows into French doors and added wider moldings at the window heads to make them look even taller. All of the windows also received a simplified grill pattern. The central, round window is embellished with characteristic Regency details. The landscaping is bolder and more architectural. A new evergreen hedge features segments that align with the main windows and bring the architecture of the house closer to the street. Window boxes and flower urns adds a consistent dash of red. The house now has a jolt of sophistication, and the existing modern features, such as the front door sidelights, the entry lantern and the shallow, sloped roof, now mesh more comfortably with the rest of the composition. —HOMEWORK

FROM THE GARDEN

®

by p. allen smith | photos by mark fonville

EXTRA ATTENTION IN THE GARDEN 〉〉 1. DEADHEAD FLOWERS FOR MORE BLOOMS.

I FIND THAT MY SPRING GARDEN can put on a glorious

show almost without my help. I have a few favorite perennials and some companion shrubs that never disappoint in my zone 8A garden, including hostas, peonies, iris, hydrangeas and double-flowering peony daylilies. Then comes summer, a different gardening experience altogether. Rising temperatures, spent flowers, insects and disease reassure me that I really do play an important role in the health and beauty of my plants. A little maintenance and a few key chores can make the difference between a good summer garden and a great one. Here’s a helpful checklist.

Deadheading is key to keeping your perennials (and annuals) blooming for as long as possible. Once a flower is spent, the plant begins to develop seeds for future reproduction, which drains a lot of energy from the plant and its roots. When you use a hand pruner to remove the spent flower head, energy is redirected into creating new flower buds. And it makes the plant look a lot better, too! Some perennials that benefit from deadheading and will likely rebloom include shasta daisies, coneflowers, salvias, coreopsis, bee balm, tall garden phlox and black-eyed Susans. And while some spring-flowering plants will not rebloom, removing spent flowers provides more energy for building and maintaining healthy roots.

P. ALLEN SMITH IS AN AUTHOR, CONSERVATIONIST, AND TV HOST OF GARDEN HOME ON PBS AND GARDEN STYLE (CHECK YOUR LOCAL LISTINGS). HE USES HIS ARKANSAS HOME, MOSS MOUNTAIN FARM, TO PROMOTE THE LOCAL FOOD MOVEMENT, ORGANIC GARDENING AND THE PRESERVATION OF HERITAGE POULTRY. FOR TOURS OF THE FARM, VISIT PALLENSMITH.COM/TOURS.

Midsummer is also a great time to cut back fall-blooming perennials that may be starting to set early flower buds, like mums and asters. Cut the plant back by about one-third to delay bloom time and create a fuller plant.

2. FERTILIZER PROVIDES A BOOST OF ENERGY.

A healthy garden starts with healthy soil. If your soil is in good shape, it might not be necessary to add fertilizer. If you notice yellowing leaves or a general failure to perform, consider enriching your soil by top-dressing the plant’s roots with compost. Lucky for me, the chickens at Moss Mountain Farm provide a steady supply of manure and compost. You also can supplement plants with a slow-release granular fertilizer like Osmocote. A balanced 14-14-14 fertilizer will boost roots, green foliage and flower production.

3. INSECTS AND DISEASE ARE CONSTANTS IN EVERY GARDEN.

I like to think that if gardening was too easy, I wouldn’t enjoy it as much. So when I’m faced with damage to a plant, I’m ready for the challenge. For diseases like black spot and powdery mildew, make sure your plant is getting proper air circulation. Overcrowding creates an environment that holds moisture, letting disease thrive. Also, don’t water at night or from above. Hand watering or a gentle drip is best for healthy plants. If you’re still having disease issues, consider using an environmentally friendly product like Neem oil or insecticidal soap. Neem oil is created using an extract from the neem tree, native to India. It is used to treat common plant diseases, prevent ones such as black spot, rust and powdery mildew, and control insects. Because it must be ingested by insects to be effective, it will not harm pollinators like bees, butterflies and ladybugs. It’s also biodegradable and, if used

correctly, safe for animals. Insecticidal soap is effective for treating aphids, scale, thrips, sawfly, spider mites, whiteflies and many more. It works on contact, and residual spray on the leaf will have no impact. Genetics also play a role in the disease resistance of plants. Fill your garden with reblooming perennials such as daylilies and tall bearded iris to provide a naturally diseaseresistant solution.

4. WEEDING IS A NECESSARY EVIL.

Weeding is probably the most unpopular task in my arsenal of maintenance tips, but there’s no avoiding it. Weeds steal valuable nutrients and moisture, so they must go. To avoid the spread of weeds, get to them before they go to seed. You can minimize this dreaded chore by using a quality mulch in your flower beds to retain moisture in the soil, smother existing weeds and prevent weed seeds from embedding in your soil.

5. WHEN IT’S HOT AND THERE’S NO RAIN … WATER!

Water is a valuable natural resource, and the less supplemental watering you do, the better. But all gardens experience periods of extended drought with high temperatures. Consider watering once a week with a deep soak (30 to 45 minutes) versus a little bit of water every day. Deep watering supports deeper, stronger plant roots, which in turn require less watering. Soaker hoses are more efficient and waste less water than sprinklers, but there’s no substitute for a good downpour from Mother Nature. The summer perennial garden may not come with the same ease as the spring garden, but it definitely can produce the same pageantry and fanfare—with a little help from you.
