IN THIS ISSUE WE ARE PROUD TO CELEBRATE WOMEN. We live in a time where women have never been so critical
to our society in so many ways. They are running Fortune 500 companies, launching entrepreneurial endeavors, heading up boards and serving at the highest levels of government—all while still carrying the load (or partial load) of managing their household and families and, many times, aging parents. While the ability to work at our highest potential is an astounding gain, it unfortunately does not alleviate all of the other duties that are expected of women, as well as desired by women, outside of the workplace. Likewise, women who have chosen not to work and instead focus on their families amaze us all as well. What an exceptional feat to be ‘on’ for your family at all times and manage a household’s needs 24/7. When my kids were younger, I often said work felt like vacation and I couldn’t wait to get to my desk! There is no contending that women are some of the hardest working people we know who should be celebrated. To that end, I hope you will take some time to read about Erica King, founder of Shorty Mix Gourmet Cookies, who is spotlighted in this week’s Apronomics (p. F7). We also feature another local entrepreneur, Ellen Mazur of Glendale, a mom who turned her COVID-19 candlemaking into a successful business (p. 14). Our style feature, CANDID (p. 17), interviews Reshma Chattaram Chamberlin, co-founder of Summersalt swimwear, an innovative and inclusive company dedicated to creating swimwear for all body types. Last but not least, meet Stacy Taubman in our Get Ignited column (p. 12). Stacy is the pioneering force behind Rise Workspace in Clayton and now also Denver, Colorado. Her path to success is quite remarkable! I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to praise the talented, all-female leadership team I work with day in and day out. They are resourceful, creative, smart and the best in the business. These women have helped craft and curate Town&Style with me over the past 10 years, and I am forever grateful for their dedication to the product and companionship through thick and thin. Hope you enjoy the issue!

by stephanie wallace BUYING A HOME IS ONE OF LIFE’S MOST EXCITING MILESTONES. However, the complicated process of financing such an important purchase can put a damper on the entire process. What if there was a way to simplify it all, to make homebuyers feel like they had someone in their corner for assistance and real support? Enter Guaranteed Rate, a company dedicated to simplifying the mortgage experience through cutting-edge technology and a personal touch. Its highly trained loan officers and specialists put customers first and streamline the process, so everything moves faster and everyone is happier. “Our clients can move at their own pace,” says Derek Meyers, manager of the company’s local branch in Kirkwood. “We keep communication with clients and referral partners open, so the process is as quick and smooth as possible.” Earlier this year, Derek and his mother Jani Meyers, who serves as a vice president of mortgage lending, made the move to Guaranteed Rate. Both had years of experience working at banks, but Derek notes they were ready for a change. “The transition offered both of us a lot of potential for growth,” he says. “The tools and support the company has are fantastic, and it is doing progressive and innovative work in the lending world.” Jani says they wanted to be part of the company’s growth. “It also was important for us to be able to work with the latest technology and programs,” she adds. While the innovation and technology are cornerstones of Guaranteed Rate’s methodology, both Jani and Derek note the company is equally focused on providing clients a personal connection throughout the process. With more than three decades of experience in the field, Jani understands the importance of putting people first. “Through the mortgage process, my clients become family, and that’s one of my biggest advantages,” she says. “I make sure I ask the right questions so I understand their needs and dreams and can ensure they get what they want.” While some people may be thrown off by the idea of working with family, that’s not the case for this mother-son duo. Both Derek and Jani note that not only has working together fostered professional growth, it has allowed them to become closer as well. “I love to come to work, and it’s been fun to grow professionally with my oldest child,” she says. “We learn from each other every day. While we bring different strengths and resources to the table, our mission statement is the same: Treat people like you would want to be treated.” The Meyers both live in Chesterfield, and they are excited to help grow the community they’ve worked in and enjoyed for years. “St. Louis is a big little town,” Jani notes. “It’s a very connected community, and everybody is important. That’s the approach we take at Guaranteed Rate. We are committed to helping you, whether you’re looking for a $50,000 loan or a $5 million one.” While the Guaranteed Rate’s local branch is dedicated to helping St. Louisians, Derek says the support goes both ways. “We are blessed to have wonderful referral partners and clients,” he explains. “I can’t stress enough how supportive they’ve been, especially during personal hardships our family has faced. That’s one of the things that makes St. Louis unique. It’s more than a business relationship. The people we work with become friends and family.” &

You know, I seem to have noticed a lot fewer fireflies in our U. City neighborhood this summer than I remember chasing at dusk and capturing by the dozen as a kid in the 1960s. Hordes of bees used to flit from clover blossom to clover blossom in our suburban yards, too. But pesticides and mowing to keep up with the Joneses or whoever the neighbors are kills off most of that stuff, flora and fauna both. Isn’t it great to kick back with your brew of choice, be it Bud Light or Lipton, and admire a lush, green yard bereft of bugs and weeds? OK, well, you’ll notice that our photo features not

You might think the National Museum of Transportation (TNMOT) is just home to greasy old trains and other obsolete ways to get around. Well, the big locomotives are kept pretty spic-and-span, thank you very much, as are Bobby Darin’s ‘dream car,’ streetcars not named ‘Desire,’ airplanes, and even a reassembled unit from the notorious Coral Courts, the metro’s legendary ‘motel no-tell’ from back in the day (now the site of a subdivision on Watson Road, east of where Crestwood Plaza used to be). Ahh, progress. Well, sort of. Getting back to the future, in just a few days you can see some of the hottest luxury sports cars in the known universe in the TNMOT upper lot, which is pretty darn close to the fine hamlet of Kirkwood at 2933 Barrett Station Road. You might want to tune up your jalopy for heading out there lickety-split, as the ND4SPD Exotic Car Club Show will vamoose quicker than you can say Viper, Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren and Lamborghini (plus, maybe even Bugatti?)—it’s this Saturday (July 31) from 10 a.m. to noon. Please obey the speed limit. You’re not Sammy Hagar, are you? You can drive even slower than 55, if you have to. Roads are kind of twisty and curvy out there.

only a pollen-dusted worker bee, but also the lowly dandelion, which we yank out or spray by the gazillions every spring. Then we spread grass seed and some sort of ‘turf builder,’ or the lawn guys at the apartment or condo complex take care of that, goodness gracious. But we need to worry more about bees, I posit, and not allergies from stings so much. (“What—me worry? The environment is all my great-grandkids’ problem, not mine. Right?”) Keen botanical minds figure the humble honeybee is responsible for annually pollinating untold billions of dollars’ worth of crops. Bees jonesing for nectar pollinate everything from noxious weeds like thistles to apple and peach trees. Without pollinators, plants continue to grow but cannot produce fruits and vegetables. Then, pesticides absorbed by plants, in turn, harm bees. These chemicals may remain in the food supply chain for years. Climate change can mess up crop planting schedules, which confuses pollinators. Insects have naturally keen instincts. We also screw those up by eliminating their habitat. We can’t all be rocket surgeons, but humans are supposed to be smart. We could cut back on pesticides and let dandelions flourish, even if that wouldn’t look as good.
My wife was born in St. Louis but graduated from high school in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her younger brother was born in Fort Wayne and graduated from Notre Dame. So, they’re both capital ‘H’ Hoosiers, but neither could be considered a hoosier by any means. This usage baffled me when I moved here from Atlanta, where the insult was ‘redneck’ most of the time. Which brings us to the eyebrow-raising name of a sparkling new bar on Kingshighway in South City: The Golden Hoosier. With the classy neon signage in front, it’s obvious at first glance this is not a dive joint. It’s south of Uncle Bill’s Pancake House in the space once occupied by Southtown Pub, which served pretty good barbecue. Supposedly a hoosier is a lower-class person—that is, lower in the regional class hierarchy than you and most of your family, neighbors and friends. Hoosiers either live so far south they’re in the Memphis suburbs or across either river in St. Charles County or Illinois. They’re just NIMBY—Not in My Back Yard. So, back to The Golden Hoosier at 3707 S. Kingshighway Blvd. The owners had not returned a reporter’s phone call by press time, but according to the fellow who took the message, for the time being it’s an evening hangout with pub grub that opens at 4 p.m. So for a quick lunch, any hoosiers and wannabes will have to go back a few blocks north to the pancake house or a little farther to Courtesy Diner. I didn’t ask the Golden Hoosier dude what beers they have on tap, but from their website descriptions and photos, the bar is Art Deco. Is there Stag? I hear it’s a hoosier favorite. I drank my last beer in Illinois in March 1984, but it was an Old Style, which beer aficionados say is even worse. Anyhow, you might have to venture a stone’s throw from SLU and visit The Fountain on Locust for such vintage ambience.
TENNESSEE WILLIAMS WAS THE DRAMATIST’S PEN NAME. WHAT WAS HIS NAME AT BIRTH? (Cheaters never really win, remember, so pretend it’s 1945 and Google is the stuff of science fiction.)
LAST ISSUE’S Q&A Where is the North American headquarters of AB InBev? In what year was the company’s great-great-great-(etc.) grandparent founded, and where is it based today? Here’s that big, fat softball we promised to toss you last time: The North American headquarters of AB InBev is right here in River City. Anheuser-Busch, after a fashion, moved to Belgium where Stella Artois and other beers have been brewed since 1366 in Leuven, where AB’s parent company is located.

cwe Tennessee Williams, to many critics and scholars America’s greatest 20th-century playwright, credited an oft-unhappy St. Louis experience for much of his art’s profound emotional impact. When asked later in life when he moved from St. Louis, he replied, “I never really left.” We could put that quotation in bold italics, underline it, then put it up in lights because the Tennessee Williams Festival marks its sixth anniversary next month. Williams, who passed away in 1983, is very much still here—thanks to veteran producer, casting director, acting coach, educator and actor Carrie Houk, who first staged Stairs to the Roof in 2014, and hasn’t looked back since. (This year’s fest—The Moon and Beyond: Tennessee Williams and the Central West End—is slated for Aug. 19-29.) Houk has aimed to extend the prolific artist’s profound influence beyond the 19 years in the city neighborhood that so shaded his oeuvre, not the least of which is The Glass Menagerie, the 1944 play that made Tennessee Williams a household name. After our pandemic year, when Houk et al. pivoted to take full advantage of old-school technology with productions on the radio, the festival returns live, with at least one unique and delightful wrinkle: Menagerie will be staged at The Tennessee, the very CWE apartment building where Williams and his family lived when they first moved here. “That we’re doing it there … ” Houk begins, thoughtfully. “Just standing on the fire escape gives me chills. It’s been a dream of mine. And we’re not going to let this one go.” Her dream might not have come true a few years ago, however, because the building at 4633 Westminster Place was once destined for the wrecking ball. Fortunately, a subsequent owner savvied its historic significance. With August’s weather being what it could be, theatergoers each will have a fan; that is, to actually fan themselves so they don’t succumb to the vapors. There also will be rain dates, depending on how long actors can remain WILLIAMS, WHO PASSED in town. “The cast members AWAY IN 1983, IS VERY will be lodging there,” Houk says. (Oh, if only walls could MUCH STILL HERE ... talk, one imagines creative souls would listen intently. Well, in this case, one might have to be persuaded otherwise. Note: For those with the most vivid of Williams fantasies, you, too, may book The Tennessee sometime—it’s in the Airbnb network.) Also at The Tennessee will be You Lied to Me About Centralia, a play by John Guare, which takes the Menagerie narrative further in any number of potential directions. Two matinees are slated. Scholarly presentations, readings, exclusive pre-theater dining, and even cocktail events with “TW-themed libations” are on tap, says Houk, along with a walking tour of sites prominent in Williams’ works and memoirs. For a comprehensive event schedule, pricing and ticket details, visit twstl.org. It all looks to be fabulous, whether you choose the entire feast or select à la carte. As Williams was quoted as saying, “There is a time for departure even when there’s no certain place to go.”

I’VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF
writing a column for Town&Style for nine years, but I always knew at some point I would stop—either I would be fired over something I had written or a different opportunity would pull me away. I’m actually stunned I haven’t been fired and have only been put on double-secret probation once! So, surprisingly, I am ending my career at Town&Style because of another opportunity I can’t pass up. Before I tell you how much I have enjoyed writing this column and appreciate you as readers, I’d like to tell you about what I’m doing next. “Start spreading the news. I’m leaving today. I want to be a part of it. New York, New York!” Yes, the rumor you’ve heard is true! I am heading to New York to take the place of Meghan McCain on ABC’s The View! I know it is a bit of a surprise they would pick
someone my age with my political leanings—considering that Joy and Whoopi clearly have the ‘old liberal lady’ demographic covered—but they need a fresh face, and look at the picture next to this column? Shouldn’t it be mine? OK, so I don’t really have the job quite yet, but there is no reason to think I can’t get it. Remember a few years ago when everyone read that book The Secret? I didn’t actually read it, but if I just set my intention or goal or something and think about it really hard, it can happen, right? Bingo! Done! I am a star! Not Star Jones. Remember when she was a host on The View? Yikes! I thought Barbara Walters was going to slap her silly if she didn’t stop talking about her upcoming wedding. I digress. So, according to the gossip columns, Meghan was difficult, but
ABC was committed to her. When her fellow panelist Sunny Hostin complained, she was told, “Meghan is staying, but you can leave.” So Sunny shut her mouth. What finally did her in was her repeated jabs at the ever chill Whoopi Goldberg, who I am confident has a medical marijuana card or she would have died hosting this show several years ago. Why me? First, I get along well with everyone! Now, for all of the people I used to work with and my siblings, keep it down. There is no reason to comment. I know I can be a little brusque, snarky and my eye does that twitching thing, but I have mellowed. Second, I can talk about anything. Ask the cashier at Dierbergs, the people in line next to me at CVS, my children. I can talk about stuff I know nothing about and actually sound like I know

something about it. Third, I don’t mind embarrassing myself by sharing details about my personal life. Think about the stuff I write in this column. Come on, I overshare, and when I meet people for the first time and they connect me to this column, I am not even phased that they know how crazy I am. Fourth, I need to walk more. Yes, I am lazy, and in New York City, you are forced to walk. Getting this job would prolong my life! I need your help! Cut this article out and write on the top ‘Hire her!’ Send it to: The View, ABC TV, 320 W. 66th St., New York, New York, 10023. If I don’t get the job at The View, perhaps I will be allowed to stay at T&S. I hope I haven’t burned any bridges. Peace, my Peeps!

get d e t i n ig STACY TAUBMAN
VERY FEW PEOPLE THINK of abstract algebra when they describe what helps them in business. But Stacy Taubman does, and as a result, her approach to business and life is refreshing, interesting and distinctive. Some of Taubman’s best business ideas have hatched using the skills she developed mastering math—allowing her mind to relax constraints so she can visualize an otherwise hidden solution. It’s part of what makes Taubman so original and successful. She started her career as a high school math teacher and now runs one of the most unique office collaboratives in the country, RISE Collaborative. Ask Taubman how she got RISE off the ground, and she’ll tell you that it involved more than 300 networking coffees in the first year. But she also admits that coming from a linear math background, she learned that starting a business required her to engage in a very non-linear process. “Having strong objectives but not holding too tight to the plan was the key,” she explains. This flexible approach helped Taubman navigate the recent challenges of the pandemic as well. She compares the process to one of her favorite paintings, George Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. In that example of pointillist technique, Taubman sees the genius of the artist: “Up close it appears as random dots of color, but taken together they
by beth chesterton
form an image.” Likewise, Taubman attends to the details, but keeps her eye on the big picture. The result is an impressive canvas. Women-centered but male-friendly, RISE Collaborative isn’t just a place to meet, work and drink coffee. It’s a thriving community here in St. Louis and in Denver, where Taubman also founded Spirtz Medspa. That sense of community is more important now as people heal from the hardships of the past year. And it’s the perfect place to work remotely if you’re tired of working from home. Thanks to Taubman and her team, RISE is a respite for replenishing and reenergizing. As she says, “it is a place where people know your name and truly want to see you succeed.” Spend some time at RISE and you will understand what being part of an ignited community feels like. As a former math teacher, Taubman can quickly measure the probability of an outcome. But today, that is not where she applies her energy. Rather, she likes to concentrate on possibilities, which is where she says “all the magic comes from.” Measure the amazing things she has accomplished and it’s easy to believe in the magic of Stacy Taubman, too.

MOMS SO OFTEN CAN BE THE GLUE that holds families together, but what happens when the pressure becomes too much, the glue starts to peel and things start to come apart? That’s just a small picture of what it’s been like for so many of us over the past year and a half. I know I have felt it, and I know so many others have. Even with things starting to go back to normal, there has been lingering anxiety and uncertainty. The stress we had to face last year isn’t to be ignored. It takes time to bounce back; some of us may need this year to do less, rest more, recover and ease back into it all. I have had to step back in my own life recently and realize that what worked in the past is not working right now. All of the things I used to be able to juggle, like managing the kids at home, taking on new projects, planning summer activities, nurturing others, and finding time to breathe myself, is a whole lot to handle. I have had to say no to a lot and yes to things that bring peace. So as much as I think the word self-care is overused, I asked a few moms to share their favorite ways to take some time to breathe, rest their minds, or treat themselves so that their family ‘glue’ can stay strong and things at home don’t get frazzled and frayed.

1. SCHEDULE A WALK WITH FRIENDS. There is nothing better for your mind than a long walk.
Walking with a friend is the perfect way to share life and encourage each other. What can be better? —Alison V., Kirkwood
2. GO ON A RUN. It is a type of bilateral stimulation, and studies show that stimulating both sides of the brain in a repetitive fashion can help reduce anxiety and the effects of trauma. It’s essentially the heart of EMDR therapy. —Caroline H., Ladue 3. GARDEN. I garden flowers and herbs for cooking and smelling.

6. GO TO THE SYMPHONY. Classical music is shown to have healing and calming effects on
stressed-out brains.

7. IF YOU CAN SNEAK AWAY, BOOK A SPA DAY. Make an appointment at the Four Seasons spa, order lunch, sit by the pool and relax. In my opinion, that’s the best staycation in STL. I had a spa day with a couple of friends, and it was so fun! —Amy A., St. Charles 8. PLAN A RETREAT. Did you know we have an actual solitude retreat run by nuns about 1.5 hours outside St. Louis? It’s called Windridge Solitude, and they use pack mules to take you and your food to your cottage. You can go alone or with a friend. I don’t even know what I would do with all of that silence, but I may check it out. —Kelli W., Crestwood 9. TRY A DAILY STRETCH APP. ROMWOD is an amazing one.
—Carol B., Wildwood Here are some of my recommendations: ▶ Turn off your phone for a few hours at a time. I had a landline installed for this purpose only so my family can get a hold of me in case of emergency … but no one else. There is something so calming about having no phone notifications to get back to at least for a little bit. ▶ Immune intervention. If you have run yourself completely down this year, keep your body strong. You can have a mobile IV service like Fresh Infusion administer vitamins through IV fusion therapy to help restore any damage stress has caused. ▶ Lymphatic drainage facial. I have heard from many people that these are life-changing. ▶ Acupuncture! In other words, ’tis the season to slow down and take care of yourself. We have been through a lot. I’m preaching to myself and to you!

A CREATIVE SPARK from pandemic hobby to business
BY STEPHANIE WALLACE
OF PHOTO COURTESY
EVERYDAY FANCY
CANDLE CO.
Whether it was baking bread from scratch or tackling a closet that desperately needed organizing, last year offered many the opportunity to take on projects. Glendale resident Ellen Mazur chose to use her spare time during lockdown to make her own candles. A big fan of home fragrances and a proponent of using clean ingredients, she refused to use standard chemical- and toxin-laden fragrances. Now, her crafting endeavor has turned into Everyday Fancy Candle Co.
Why do you think it’s important for people to know what’s in candles? A couple of years ago, I guess you could say I fell down a clean living hole. I learned that one of the biggest offenders is fragrances. They’re considered proprietary, so there is no regulation. Most of them are just a load of chemicals, and some of them include things like carcinogens, endocrine disrupting hormones and other toxins that can cause respiratory issues and headaches. When you light a candle, you’re essentially burning that stuff off into the air. It’s great that companies are committing to using ingredients like soy and beeswax and cotton wicks, but most still aren’t addressing the fragrance issue. How did you start making your own candles? I’ve always loved candles, and last year, I was looking for a COVID craft. I stumbled across a company that creates clean fragrances, and I had so much fun experimenting with them and creating new scents. My friends and family were excited about the project, so I decided to turn it into a business. Where does your inspiration for scent blends come from? Coming up with new blends is my favorite part of the process. I probably have around 100 or 150 individual fragrances that I play around with. I usually start with one scent and pick a couple of others that I think will go well with it. Sometimes, it takes a lot of tweaking before I have something really nice. Then I come up with a name, which I find really fun. It helps make the candle a complete experience. After you find the right name, it gives it a whole new spin. How was it launching a business during the pandemic? Honestly, I think it all came together pretty naturally. If you had asked me a few years ago if I would ever be an entrepreneur, the answer would have been no. I have three young kids, so I didn’t think I could take on another big responsibility. With Everyday Fancy Candle Co., everything fell into place. I have a couple of friends with shops, and they started carrying my candles, and I got such positive feedback. It was the jumping off point I needed. That’s not to say it wasn’t a lot of work, but it all fit together. What’s next for Everyday Fancy Candle Co.? I just launched a candle of the month club, and I’m looking forward to growing that. I’m still deciding if I would like to grow the wholesale side of my business or continue to focus on the online aspect. Along with expanding my scents, I’m also experimenting with the vessels. There are so many opportunities to be creative and different materials you can use. I want to stay up to date and provide people with different options. Reed diffusers are something I’m toying with for some of our existing scents and new ones. I really just want to expand on the home fragrance business while keeping true to that mission of creating candles free of toxic ingredients.

OFF the cuff w/claiborne jackie joyner-kersee
Having par ticipated in four Olympics and World Championships where she won 10 medals—seven of them gold—there’s no doubt that Jackie Joyner-Kersee is one of the all-time greats. While she may not be hitting the track these days, she’s still giving her all, only instead of competition, her focus is on helping others. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING SINCE RE TIRING? Building the youth center and foundation are a big focus of mine. As I’ ve evolved as a woman, I’ ve also been doing motivational speaking to empower women and girls to reach their full potential. I don’ t want to be a hindrance, telling people what they should and should not do. All I can do is share my own experiences and how they ’ ve allowed me to carr y on along my own journey. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FOUNDATION AND YOUTH CENTER. I star ted this work back in 1988, and we built the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center in 2000. At the center, we provide transpor tation, meals, and an enrichment curriculum about social and emotional responsibilit y of my own design. We also do STEM activities, including an agriculture program through the Universit y of Illinois. The universit y, along with the Danfor th Foundation, are working with us to develop an innovation center around food and nutrition. Our long-term goal is to build an indoor field house so we can have track meets and students don’ t have to train on tile during the winter months like I had to do when I was coming up. For me, all of this connects to who I am and what I do outside of East St . Louis. WHAT DID YOU LE ARN A S A COMPE TITOR, AND WHAT DO YOU TRY TO PA SS ON TO OTHER WOMEN? I think it ’s impor tant to build a communit y of like-minded people who don’ t just agree with one another but are honest . Seeing the women of today take things to the nex t level has been really inspiring. As great of an athlete as I may be considered, myself and other female athletes never got the recognition I felt we deser ved in my day. It ’s great seeing Candance Parker be the first woman to appear on the cover of the NBA 2K video game. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PL ACES YOU’ VE TRAVELED? I love going to Italy and being able to visit the Vatican. I was able to compete in Athens where the Olympics began and see the Colosseum. I’ ve seen how Beijing has transformed, and I’ ve visited Moscow and seen the Kremlin. I’ ve been so blessed to get to go to all of these places.
PHOTO: SUZY GORMAN
WHAT ’S YOUR GO-TO ME AL? I’m really a pasta girl, so that ’s one reason I love going to Italy. I also love a good cheeseburger. WHAT ’S YOUR FAVORITE PL ACE FOR A CHEESEBURGER? That ’s tough. Ever ywhere I go, I tr y to find one. I like Shake Shack , and if ever y thing else fails, I’ll go to McDonald’s and get my cheeseburger with pickles and light mustard only. FAVORITE PL ACES TO SHOP IN ST. LOUIS? I love going to Plaza Frontenac, but I’m a discount girl as well, so you’ll also find me in Walmar t and Target . FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN ST. LOUIS? It ’s gotta be Sur f & Sirloin. Love it , love it . WHAT OUTFIT WOULD YOU NOT BE CAUGHT DE AD IN? You’re not going to see me in Daisy Dukes.

WHAT ST YLE DO YOU WISH WOULD MAKE A COMEBACK ? I love big shoulders, so shoulder pads.

R E S H M A C H AT TA R A M C H A M B E R L I N ▪ O F S U M M E R S A LT RESHMA CHATTARAM CHAMBERLIN is the co-founder and chief brand and digital officer of Summersalt, a generation-defining lifestyle brand known for its data-backed fit and designer quality products. (It uses 1.5 million measurements from 10,000 body scans!) In 2020, Fast Company named Summersalt one of the 10 Most Innovative Style Companies of the Year. Reshma and her co-founder Lori Coulter launched Summersalt to change the conversation around swimwear and address a true market gap by creating designer swimwear without the designer price tag. My personal style … You’ll see me most often in no-fuss, elevated basics. I’m not super trend-driven—though you won’t catch me in skinny jeans or with a side part! I’ve been focusing on quality over quantity, choosing classics I can wear again and again. And when I’m traveling, my motto is to stand out while fitting in, like mixing Indian textiles with jeans or leggings when I’m visiting Mumbai or a great blazer and jeans in Paris. The best piece(s) of fashion armor in my closet … Loungewear that can be dressed up or down. The comfort and versatility are a life changer! I love our Summersalt leggings for working out, but I also can pair them with sweaters for WFH and travel. The same goes for our sweat sets—I love that I can wear them together or break them up. I’m making my mark by … Changing the conversation around swimwear. I’m so proud of our ‘Every Body Is a Summersalt Body’ campaign we launched earlier this summer, which showcased 24 incredibly accomplished and diverse women. It’s been rewarding to hear from women that this campaign finally made them feel seen, and to see them sharing it with their daughters. Of course, we’re not perfect, but we work really hard to create a welcoming experience. A professional/personal challenge that keeps me up at night … I just got two puppies, and they are literally keeping me up all night! But they are so cute and bring us so much joy. Professionally, I’m always looking to be more creative and thoughtful for our customers. I’m always asking myself: how can we deliver on our promises even more?

In moments of self-doubt, I build myself back up … By reminding myself what makes me unique. No matter who you are, you can have imposter syndrome. When that happens, focus on what makes you essential. We all have superpowers—go back to yours. My version of personal care … Life is extremely busy right now with a new home, two puppies and summer mode at work! So when it’s finally time to wind down, I like to put on my Summersalt PJs and get in bed with a great show. Right now, I’m rewatching one of my favorites, Gilmore Girls! Words of wisdom that resonate with me are … The grass is green where you water it. When you put energy and effort into something, you reap the rewards. I stay true to my passions by … Working hard! People often mistake passion as being easy, but you have to put in the work and hours to make your passion a reality. I’m most proud of … What Lori and myself, along with our team, have built together at Summersalt. It’s been truly amazing, and I can’t wait to see where we take it. One message I’d like to share with all … Go for it! Whether it’s paragliding, trying a new food or starting a company, you don’t know until you try. You will fail. You will succeed. My failures have been spectacular, but they were just stepping stones. You’ll never know what amazing things can happen unless you try.

BUSINESS SAVVY THE REALTY SHOP
by julia m. johnson SUCCESS IN THE CURRENT REAL ESTATE market requires fresh thinking, innovative technology, and collaborative partnerships between agents and clients. Amanda Alejandro, who owns The Realty Shop with her husband Jay Steinback, says the company keeps these principles in mind during all stages of buying and selling a home. Alejandro’s 15 years in real estate and Steinback’s business expertise as the former CEO and owner of Rothman Furniture form the foundation of their three-year-old agency. They have been actively hiring knowledgeable team members, with about 40 agents now on board, and there are plans to expand to 100 by the end of the year. In fact, the company’s new, technologically advanced Creve Coeur headquarters is designed to house up to 300 agents, Steinback says. According to Alejandro, The Realty Shop is a thriving example of women driving business success, and she is glad to serve as a model for female entrepreneurship. “Our staff does a great job of keeping the company moving and growing, but we also know how to delegate when appropriate,” she explains. “Our COO, Erin Irby, is a great example of this. She is married and has a family, but she also is amazing in her roles at the agency. Our staff members know how to strike a balance between being leaders and leaning on each other, and the client always benefits from that.” Alejandro says her own workday starts and stops with organizational skills, and that helps her keep multiple business units on track, including the real estate brokerage, a photography and video company called Realty Shots that works in 23 states, and Realty Ready, a program that buys as-is homes for cash. “I do everything

with the help of checklists,” she says. “I wake up every morning knowing what I need to accomplish, and I end every evening with tasks set for the next day.” An agency-wide commitment to efficiency allows team members to respect clients’ time and keep their best interests at the forefront. “I always put myself in other people’s shoes and think about the kind of service I would want to receive,” Alejandro says. “Our clients in other fields would take care of me from start to finish if I were using their services, so I want to offer them the same kind of turnkey experience.” Steinback says the couple recently moved into a new home themselves, and they know how daunting it can seem, so they strive to ease the transition for clients. “Our buyers and sellers enjoy real peace of mind knowing they can move their families in or out of a home with minimum stress,” he says. At the end of the day, the focus is always on serving clients’ needs with modern technology, a shared sense of purpose and a careful personal touch. “I pride myself on being a knowledgeable businessperson and an expert on the market, both locally and nationally,” Alejandro says. “In the past, it often was difficult for women to be taken seriously as leaders in business and real estate, but that has continued to change through the years. We are helping to change it.” &

HOOKED – – BOOKS by patty hannum
Toward That Which Is Beautiful by Marian O’Shea Wernicke What a lovely book! Set in Peru, a young nun from St. Louis finds herself at a crossroads when she realizes that she loves a man and cannot commit to her final vows. Regardless of your religion, this story about one woman’s crisis of faith will keep you glued to the very last page. I read this well into the night, as my heart broke for Sister Kate. Read this book.

Early Morning Riser by Katherine Heiny I’m not sure if Boyne City, Michigan, exists (the setting of this book), but if it does, we all need to move there. Why? Because everyone is wonderful and charming. When the new school teacher falls in love with the town’s Romeo, she has no idea the baggage he brings along ... not just his ex-wife, but her new husband and quite a few others. A very fun, light-hearted read that is great for summer.
Zero Fail : The Rise and Fall of the Secret Service by Carol D. Leonnig Following the Kennedy assassination, the Secret Service was transformed into an elite group of highly trained officers to protect our elected officials. This book takes an unflinching look at how well the Secret Service has worked over the years. You will be shocked by the number of near misses but also stunned by how dedicated many of the agents are to those they protect. An insider’s look at the workings of one elite agency.
The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave What do you do if your new husband leaves you with his daughter, a pile of cash and a note to protect her? Thankfully, Hannah, the character in this book, is not as lazy as me as she painstakingly puts together pieces of the puzzle to figure out what it all means. A very enjoyable read that you can’t put down until you just finish the next page.

ERICA KING OF SHORTY MIX GOURMET COOKIES GROWING UP, ERICA KING was fascinated by the ornate tins of shortbread
cookies she would find in the homes of friends and family. However, she usually found sewing or first aid kits inside instead of the tasty treats. When she finally got to try one, her anticipation was met with sweet approval. “I thought it was such a delicious yet simple cookie,” she says. Now, King is putting her own spin on her love of shortbread with a new business, Shorty Mix Gourmet Cookies. A St. Louis native, King grew up near Grand Center and attended Metro Academic and Classical High School. “The area is full of music and culture; I love it,” she says. As the oldest of her siblings, she started cooking and baking with her mother at a young age. “I remember the smells and waiting by the oven to carefully make sure the cake didn’t fall,” King recalls. “She always made it special and exciting. That was my introduction to baking.” King’s grandmother also was a major culinary influence in her life. “I remember how good she was at cooking and how her food brought everyone together,” she says. “There always was somebody knocking at her door and food going around. Seeing her so joyous and ready to serve others, it resonated with me.” King’s grandmother worked for years preparing the inflight meals for Lambert Airport. Unlike with her mother, however, King did not often join her grandmother in the kitchen. “I just watched,” she explains. “She was a professional; she didn’t have time for a kid in her kitchen.” While her baking interest was sparked early, King initially opted to go into the business world. She attended college in Chicago and opted to stay and work in the city. In 2016, she found herself debating her next steps and decided to return to St. Louis. “My coming home was a journey back to myself,” she notes. King quickly found herself back in her mother’s kitchen and discovered she enjoyed cooking for her family. While she did find another corporate position, something still wasn’t clicking. “I felt like life was pushing me in a different direction,” she says. “I finally wised up that there was something about cooking that kept pulling me back.” Creating a baking-based business was a new challenge for King. “I didn’t go to culinary school, so I figured I’d be starting at the bottom,” she says. However,
she recalled the shortbread tins of her youth and how special they felt to her. The simple butter cookies would make the perfect canvas to show her culinary creativity. She also decided to incorporate her travels and experiences studying abroad in Spain. “I got to learn how others eat and cook,” she notes. “I absorbed it all. It was such a unique way to see how other people live.” The geographic impact can be seen in her cookie flavors like Spanish Sangria, Moroccan Snickerdoodle and Chicago Cheddar Caramel. With no experience in the food industry, King turned to local resources to learn the ropes. She started with Square One and then was connected with the STL Foodworks culinary incubator. She moved into the latter’s kitchen in City Foundry, putting her new business just a short walk away from her old high school. “Both programs have shown me just how tight knit and supportive the food and beverage community is in St. Louis,” she notes. “It was really inspiring because it’s one of the toughest industries to work in. Many times, I wondered what I was getting myself into, but they opened the door to so many resources for me.” Launching a business in a pandemic was a daunting prospect, but King was able to put her past experience in marketing to good use. She wasn’t able to launch Shorty Mix Gourmet Cookies with an in-person component, but she took advantage of virtual options. “I’ve always had my eyes on online sales, and I also often was the person responsible for sending out corporate gifts, so I understood the process,” she says. “It may seem simple at first, but once you look at the logistics, you can see how complicated it is.” King focused on developing her website and determining the best way to ship her cookies. Now, the company does have that personal connection King initially wanted. Shorty Mix Gourmet Cookies sells its wares at both the Tower Groves Farmers Market and Schlafly’s Maplewood Market. King is working on creating new flavors, including a gooey butter cookie bar as an homage to the StL. She’s also hopeful to one day have a storefront: “I would love to be a bakery where people walk by for the free smells and can’t help but come in and get a snack.” &

TAMING STRESS
wi t h se l f- c a re
BY JULIA M. JOHNSON
WOMEN ARE OFTEN SO BUSY looking after others that it can be a challenge to carve out time for their own well-being. While it may seem like an uphill battle trying to make space in your schedule for relaxation, recentering and stress management, there are some relatively simple ways they can be accomplished. If you think of caring for yourself as an essential part of caring for others, it may become a little easier to justify time spent on it.
Here are some key points to remember about addressing stress for better overall health. A small amount of stress can be beneficial, as it can motivate you to
perform tasks and duties well. But when stress levels start to mount, your brain kicks into ‘fight or flight’ mode, signaling your body to release hormones that boost heart rate and blood pressure. Your muscles tighten, and your adrenal glands release stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These physical responses are intended to help your body deal with increased threats to its safety. But when work and family stressors come at you non-stop, your mind and body are never able to reset to a normal, relaxed state. Long-term stress may lead to problems like insomnia, headaches, heartburn, back pain, indigestion and heart palpitations. It also can contribute to behavioral issues like forgetfulness, poor concentration, indecisiveness, overeating and smoking. Simple stress avoidance techniques can help your mind and body adapt to the demands of everyday life. First, identify situations that make you feel irritable or upset, like waiting in long lines, sitting in traffic or being late for meetings. Then, work on ways of getting around them, like going to the store at off-peak hours, setting smartphone reminders or waking up a few minutes earlier. Other stress management tools that can be woven into your routine include relaxation methods to lower blood pressure, stress hormone levels, and breathing and heart rates. Meditation and breathing exercises are good examples, and they can be done almost anywhere, like your car or a quiet corner of the office break room. Yoga also can be beneficial. Exercise offers many benefits for combating the pressures of daily life. Being active reduces the body’s stress hormones and increases the production of endorphins, which act as natural mood elevators and painkillers. Studies also have shown that physical activity may reduce the stressful effects of anxiety and depression. Any type of exercise can help, from walking around the block at lunchtime to taking a vigorous fitness class. Positive goal setting can help mitigate the effects of stress. It’s easier to feel good about daily activities when you can check small and large accomplishments off of a list each day. Stress-busting goals can be set in any area of your life, including work, home, relationships, health and relaxation time. Seeing a cognitive behavioral therapist or other professional counselor can help you correct unhealthy psychological and emotional habits that contribute to stress. How is the home for entertaining? It’s perfect for a modern family’s lifestyle. The spaces are open and flow into one another. One change we made was getting rid of the formal dining room and creating an eat-in kitchen. It opens to the family and great rooms, and there’s also access to the backyard. It’s my favorite element of the home.
Did you make any major renovations? Yes, the house is completely renovated. We What would you like the next homeowners to know? It’s a home that was made to be enjoyed by a gutted the kitchen and bathrooms when we moved in. Over the years, we also have opened the floor plan, family. We loved spending time outside in the summer, and the lower level is a great space for indoor continued to update and redid the patio. activities in the winter. The house worked for us for 39 years. Hopefully, a young family will be able to Did you use the outdoor spaces often? We spend part of the year in Florida, and when enjoy it as much as we have. we’re in St. Louis, we’ve always enjoyed spending time by the pool and on the patio. It’s the perfect place to spend time with our grandchildren.

JEREMY SPILLMAN AND SCOUT & NIMBLE FOUNDER JESSE BODINE
FROM THE
BLOG OF… THE CONTRACTOR & DESIGNER RELATIONSHIP LAST SUMMER, WE WERE WORKING ON SOMETHING BIG: our Tri Delta
Traditional Project. This coastal-inspired sorority home in the heart of the University of Missouri campus is such a beauty, and we couldn’t have done it without the team at Spillman Homes. Jeremy Spillman was kind enough to chat with us about the relationship between designers and contractors.
How is a budget typically split between design and building costs? If the designer is only focusing on the plans for finishes, their fees would be much different than if they also are providing furnishings. The contracting side is more cut and dry as our scope of work doesn’t have as large of a swing. However, each job is so unique that it is difficult to create a cost standard.
What is the difference between an interior designer and a contractor? What is the contractor responsible for? The interior designer sources the material and finishes and designs the feel of the space. A good interior designer makes sure that all of the details are pulled together in a way that translates to the contractor. They also make sure the space coordinates well with new furnishings from both an aesthetic and functional standpoint. The contractor is responsible for understanding the scope of the build, estimating the cost of the work, doing the physical build-out, and managing the budget, timeline and quality control.
What are some of the most common issues that come up during the building or remodeling process? The most common issues we run into are changes from the client. A change could create a massive domino effect on the schedule. This also opens the door to the risk of human error. You can avoid logistical delays by ordering materials like tile and hardware early. For example, we used to order appliances four to six weeks before we needed them, but since COVID, we order them before we start the job as their lead times have been extended dramatically. With good management, you can overcome most common issues.
Who should a client hire first? The contractor or the designer? In a perfect world, I would contact both right out of the gate if you know who you want to work with. If you only know one or the other, I would use your ‘warm contact’ first to see if they have a designer or contractor they recommend. If they have prior experience working together, it will make your project run smoother as they likely have a system in place that works for all parties. If you know a good designer and contractor, it makes sense to get them both in the very first meeting. They can bounce ideas off of each other like what will and won’t work because of the budget.
What does a contractor look for in a good relationship with an interior designer? Details, details, details. From good drawings and renderings to knowing what materials will be used where, it helps our team create an accurate estimate of cost and time. Tradespeople are the most empowered to do their job at a high level when they aren’t frustrated over the lack of details. Thorough communication is a must. You also need a willingness to work together through problems. I joke that Murphy’s Law was meant for construction because there always will be a curveball along the way. The relationship has to be a team effort, meaning you take the good and the bad together as a team, not as opposing
parties. That is why it is so great to have a contractor and designer who have worked together in the past. How do you clearly communicate between yourself, the designer and your clients? With designers, it is having all of the details needed from them. On our end, we utilize a cloud-based central management system that brings everyone to one location to share documents and communicate. Every part of that project is essentially pre-built in the cloud and accessible from anywhere. It is our most helpful tool because it streamlines communication and greatly reduces the risk of error. Clients love it because it is so transparent and user-friendly. The thing that has taken me more than 20 years to figure out is sticking to systems and processes. For example, we used to allow materials to come from anywhere; now, they have to stay within our list of approved trade partners. Why? Because once we have relationships with trade partners, we know we can depend on them in the beginning, and if a warranty issue comes up, they stand behind it. You need those systems and processes in place to accurately estimate cost and time. How do you go about networking with designers in your area? There is no better way than asking around and finding out who is who. Look at websites and portfolios to see who you want to work with. Start cold calling, or even catch them in the field to explain your services and why you would be an asset. I would recommend becoming a member of organizations like the Home Builders Association and the local chamber of commerce. Maintain a strong internet presence through your own website and social media.

JULY 28, 2021
How long does a new build typically take? What about a remodel? Each job is different, but I will lay out some examples based on our experience in the Midwest: ▪ Custom home: One to two years ▪ Spec home: Six to eight months ▪ Kitchen or bathroom remodel: Four to six weeks ▪ Home additions: Eight to 12 weeks ▪ Finishing a basement: Five to seven weeks ▪ Interior commercial build: Eight to 12 weeks Keep in mind that these timelines do not include the time it takes to talk about the client’s goals and then turning those goals into a plan. You can easily spend three months on the design alone. We always encourage clients to take their time in the design stage because that’s the time to get it right. It’s much easier to move a wall on paper than it is in real life. What advice would you give to a new designer to get a project started off on the right foot? The devil is in the details. When you are done pulling everything together, you should be able to read it like a book that tells the story of the project from start to finish. ▪ Create realistic expectations for yourself, your builder and, most importantly, your clients. ▪ Utilize your peers in the industry and don’t be afraid to reach out and pick their brain. ▪ Take notes of what does and doesn’t work for you, and change your practices accordingly. ▪ Learn how to manage your emotions and stay professional in any situation.

Design Forecast
1. 2.
by stephanie wallace Home design trends are always changing, so there’s no reason your domestic spaces should ever feel stale or mundane. Is it time for you to rethink your living space? We’ve got five trends to look out for in the rest of 2021.
1. Paper Over It Wallpaper is back, and there’s something for everyone. If you’re inspired by the eclecticness of grandmillennial design, consider a traditional floral print, or if you’re looking for something more sleek and modern, try a geometric graphic. With this trend, you can go subtle and sophisticated or opt for something bold and dramatic. Looking for a low commitment option? Try peel-and-stick wallpaper for an easy way to upgrade a space.
3.
2. Wicker Man Woven furniture like wicker and rattan is gaining popularity. The trend is part of a larger movement to embrace natural materials. These pieces create an organic look and add both warmth and texture. As a bonus, this style works well both indoors and out.
3. Go Green
4.
Speaking of a natural influence, green also is having a moment, especially in kitchen design. Since it is a mix of blue and yellow, it works with both cool and warm color palettes. The endless variety of shades out there means green can work with any design style. You can bring the outside in with forest greens and other hues that recall foliage and botanicals, opt for something more muted like a calming olive or add drama with a bold emerald.
4. Break It Up
5.
With last year spent in close quarters with our families while working from home, we started to realize some limitations of open floor plans. Defined, functional spaces are on the rise, especially home offices. This trend doesn’t mean you have to start putting up walls or undergo major renovations. Just think through ways to zone your home into distinct work spaces. Room dividers are a great place to start.
5. East Meets West Japanese and Scandinavian design aren’t new when it comes to interior decor, but a rising trend known as ‘Japandi’ is bringing together their complementary focus on simplicity and functionality. The style is all about minimalistic, aesthetically pleasing spaces that use natural materials, clean lines, bright spaces and light, neutral colors. & SOURCES: THE SPRUCE, HOME & GARDENS, INSIDER

t This week, it's all abou organic modernism!
HEIDI BARTELS OF RSI KITCHEN & BATH What are you excited about in design right now? I’m most excited about organic modernism. It combines classic mid-century style with natural and earthy elements. This style really brings the outside in, whether through colors like green and other earth tones or using natural materials. I think it makes a space feel fresh and invigorating. How do you like to incorporate organic modernism? As a finish, stained wood has the ability to transform the whole room. It brings warmth into your mind and soul. In a kitchen, I use it as an accent for a range hood, as floating shelves or even for an island. I also love to use indoor plants like ferns or herbs to add texture and depth to a space. Do you have suggestions for experimenting with design? I would change paint colors or add accessories like accent rugs and pillows. Changing a light fixture is another way to breathe new life into an entire room at a much more responsible price than changing the whole space. Are there other styles that complement organic modernism? Mid-century modern, minimalism and Scandanvian are all complementary styles. They use light, neutral colors that work well with wood accents, and their clean lines also pair well with organic modernism. With Scandanavian design in particular, you can add a lot of texture with area rugs and pillows, which brings another layer to the space that complements the natural materials. However, it’s also important that homeowners aren’t afraid to add their own personal style into a design, regardless of what’s trending. Are there any trends that are on the way out? With people wanting to bring more warmth and color into their home, I’m seeing that the popularity of all white spaces is fading. Grey is another color that is being used less frequently at the moment.
