he certified prosthetists at Premier Prosthetics and Orthotics are passionate about making a direct impact on their patients’ quality of life by providing the highest level of convenience and care. One such patient is amputee Katie Ladlie, 23, a member of the U.S. Women’s Development Sled Hockey Team. Katie was born with a rare vascular malformation that led to the complete deterioration of the cartilage in her left knee, an extremely painful condition. In addition, the blood from her leg didn’t return to her heart properly, which caused her to get tired very quickly when active. Her doctors presented her with two choices: either try to save the knee by doing a knee fusion to bolt the joint together or amputation above the knee. “I was 12 when my dad sat me down and gave me the options,” she recalls. “I was upset for about five minutes. I’d had a lot of surgeries and to me this was just another surgery, so I was like, okay, let’s do the amputation.” With a desire to be more active and participate in sports, and inspired by Paralympic athletes, Katie had her leg amputated in 2011. Shortly after, she met Kelly Behlmann, executive director of the Disabled Athlete Sports Association of St. Louis (DASA), who further encouraged her athletic abilities. “Within a month after my amputation, she had me on a handcrank bike doing laps around Creve Coeur Park; it was one of the best things I’d ever done,” Katie says. “Never in my life had I been fast, and I’d never ridden a bike before. Being able to work out my body was so thrilling.”

KATIE LADLIE

Katie started participating in as many sports as she could, including swimming, biking and triathlons. At Troy Buchanan High School, she did track and field and helped create Para Track and Field for Missouri. She also started playing sled hockey for the DASA Blues team. Eventually, she made the U.S. women’s team, playing her first season in 20152016. With the team, Katie has had the opportunity to travel and play in other countries and is working to try and develop the sport around the world in order for women’s sled hockey to be included in the Paralympic Games. lifestyle, Katie was referred to Premier Prosthetics and recently began working with Matt Ruengert, CP, LP, CPED, who serves on the Board of DASA and works with many athletes. She will soon be getting a new foot with more springiness as well as a new microprocessor knee. “Matt has been so enthusiastic about making this leg and thinking of things that will help with my specific needs,” she says. “Premier has provided me with a lot of different options and allowed me to try out the different microprocessor knees.” The combination of the new foot and microprocessor knee will help strengthen Katie’s ability to walk and be as active as she wants to be in her daily life, as well as her training. With her determination and positive attitude, Katie has more than fulfilled her dream of being an athlete with a disability. “We’re just like anyone else trying to improve ourselves to be the best we can in our sport,” she says.

WHEN IT COMES TO NORMALCY LATELY, it seems like it’s been two steps forward, one step back. Well,

this weekend (last weekend for you guys—greetings from the past ... kinda), I’m taking a personal leap, and I want to do my part to ensure there is no backsliding. Every year since I was a freshman in high school, I’ve gone to the Illinois State Fair with my best friend—I’ll leave it to your imagination how many years we’ve held this tradition. It’s always a delightful time filled with fried food, 90-degree-plus weather and cows sculpted out of 500 pounds of butter. And last year, well, it just couldn’t happen safely, and we put the tradition on pause.

The fair is back for 2021, and the plan is to unpause. We’ll be masked up the entire time and probably won’t head into any buildings. (Alas, that means no visit to the much beloved Butter Cow.) Am I looking forward to wearing a mask while wandering outside in the late August heat? No. But on the bright side, it’ll probably come in handy if I find myself in close proximity to any livestock—something that is less of a possibility and more of an inevitability. Will the experience be different? Undoubtedly, but different is better than nothing. In fact, different is the only way we can enjoy our favorite traditions while keeping our community safe. So, different is pretty great, actually. This issue, we’re spotlighting some of the great things happening in St. Louis this fall. I can’t send you to a specific page because it’s an entire section. There are plenty of events that I want to mark on my calendar … and if you’re looking for even more, turn to p. F6 and check out, well, Mark Your Calendar. If you want an insider perspective, you won’t want to miss Off the Cuff (p. 20). Mike Claiborne talks with Amit Dhawan, the founder of Synergy Productions, a local company that’s worked on huge events like the Super Bowl Music Fest and Lollapalooza. Here’s to enjoying getting back to the things we love. Let’s do it without regret. Or, in the case of the Illinois State Fair, at least with no more regret than usual.

CONCORDANCE

by stephanie wallace RECIDIVISM IS AN ISSUE THAT CAN BE EASY TO DISMISS . After all, what effect do reincarceration rates have on our daily lives? The reality is recidivism is the third largest societal issue in the United States, with mass incarceration affecting nearly 100 million people and more than 75% of individuals released from prison being rearrested within five years. “The cycle not only has a devastating impact on incarcerated individuals, but also our society with increased homelessness, unemployment and mental and substance abuse disorders,” says Danny Ludeman, president and CEO of Concordance. The nonprofit is dedicated to advancing the field of re-entry services to help individuals thrive, rebuild families and strengthen the community. Concordance’s holistic, 18-month program focuses on serving individuals in three core areas: behavioral health and wellness, education and employment, and community and life skills. “There are a lot of incredible organizations in the re-entry space, but the scope of our program sets us apart,” Ludeman says. “We offer 12 essential services under one roof, including integrated, personalized support across substance use and mental health treatment, education, job readiness and employment, pro bono legal services, and more.” Services begin six months before release, and after the program is completed, participants retain their access to clinical and career services as alumni. According to Ludeman, one reason the situation doesn’t improve is a lack of understanding as to why reincarnation occurs. Around 80% of the national prison population deals with mental illness or substance abuse, and all of Concordance’s participants report experiencing a major childhood trauma. “Most incarcerated individuals experience trauma at a young age,” he explains. “It’s the result of being born into neighborhoods devastated by inequity and often lacking social capital and positive support systems.” Concordance recently received recognition from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an international accrediting body that establishes and evaluates standards for health and human service programs. Accreditation was achieved through rigorous peer review and onsite assessments as a substance use disorder and mental health treatment center. The success of Concrdance’s program is evident in the numbers. “In June, we celebrated five years of offering re-entry services,” Ludeman says. “In that time, we’ve worked with 900 people and have been able to lower reincarnation by 45% among our participants. It is the support from our community that has allowed us to work toward perfecting our model and provide these essential services.” The nonprofit is currently in the middle of the First Chance campaign, a fundraising initiative chaired by David Steward of WorldWide Technology. The money raised will help the organization expand its operations in St. Louis and bring its program to 11 additional cities in the next five years. This year, Concordance held a ceremony to honor its program participants, including the 23 members of the most recent graduating class. “This year’s graduates have shown exceptional strength and hope and demonstrated what it means to persevere,” Ludeman says. “They’ve not only dealt with the visible and invisible effects of a global pandemic, but also navigated an 18-month journey of healing to reintegrate into society. I was humbled to be able to hand them their diplomas and see them walk across the stage into their future.” &

We had world championship chess matches last week in the CWE. Maybe this afternoon that professional baseball team with inconsistent pitching will be worth watching against the Detroit Tigers downtown at Busch or when they leave town for a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sooner or later, we’ll be able to watch pro soccer in the new stadium under construction in Downtown West—maybe even in a crowd, without having to mask up because everybody will be vaccinated by then. But none of that is really important right now, because a weekend or so from now, one will not have to venture across the pond to engage in a real darts tournament. The largest and oldest pub darts tournament in North America is coming up, Sept. 3 through 5 at Blueberry Hill in The Loop! There will be two events for men, two for women, best three out of five; more than $10,000 in prize money will be awarded. Singles 301 winners will get their photo on the Wall of Fame in the pub’s dart room. And if that isn’t as good as a hologram of proprietor Joe Edwards startling you when you walk in, I don’t know what is.

I’m no fan of Jeff Bezos. When he came in second in the Billionaire Race to Space— having been bested by British billionaire Richard Branson— I snickered. Whenever Bezos loses anything, which is rare, I tend to pump my fist in the air. Yes, I’m that cynical about this fellow. All that said, Bezos and his minions didn’t get the big space in Sunset Hills that looked like it was for sure going to become an Amazon Fresh store. That 75,000-some square feet at Watson and Lindbergh, most of which was once a Toys ‘R’ Us store … drum roll, please … will become the first Bass Pro Shops in the metro that isn’t in St. Charles and isn’t the Bass-owned Cabela’s in Hazelwood. It’s slated to open in 2022, will employ more than 100, and probably keep the folks at the Longhorn Steakhouse across the lot hopping from then on. In more news about really, really big commercial developments in the StL that aren’t skyscraping condominium complexes, nursing homes or mega-retailers like Walmart or Costco, it looks like a second Topgolf is going to be built—in the city—near SLU on 15 acres at the northwest corner of South Compton and Chouteau avenues. Reportedly, word got around because the FAA has to be involved. Two dozen or so poles support the netting surrounding a Topgolf location: They’re at least 170 feet tall. I haven’t tried out the complex in Chesterfield, which is like a multilevel driving range with targets. Maybe like an enormous arcade crossed with a bowling alley; just add height, AC, good food and other trappings of luxury. It looks hella fun. Golf itself is a blast, at least on a driving range. Every five years or so, I may play nine holes to remind myself why I never picked up the sport. I can rarely keep my eyes on the ball long enough to include hitting it during my swing. My reflex is to look where it went before it’s gone anywhere. If you can hold a grudge against a pastoral pastime, I resent the game of golf. It makes me furious. But hurling my dad’s old used clubs in a fit of pique from a height, instead of just into a water hazard to sink and disappear forever, could actually hurt someone.

the metro

A few months ago, researchers asked us to collect ticks. (Eww?) Now, they want us to collect bumblebees. (No way! Yes, way.) We published an item a few issues back about pollinators, with honeybees chief among them. But, apparently, honeybees only are responsible for about a third of the pollination work that is done by flying critters. They’re like the fighters in an aerial battle, and bumblebees are like the bombers. If undeterred, they lumber along from blossom to blossom to get the job done—the laws of aerodynamics be damned. Would-be scientists and wannabe intellectuals argue that their bodies are too heavy, their wings too small … and what about when they’re loaded up with all that pollen? Well, the industrious bumblebee is blissfully unaware of such silly arguments as it humbly bumbles about its business. And it can’t do anything about the problems researchers, ecologists, scientists and regular folks like you and me are so concerned about: declining populations from pesticide and herbicide use and habitat destruction. So, researchers are enlisting volunteers to capture the bees without harm in order to identify species and estimate numbers. They’ll be working with the insects through the middle of next month in prairies and parks throughout the state. Catch and release is the short version for collecting each insect in a butterfly net, coaxing it into a plastic tube, then placing the tube into a cooler of ice, where the bee is stunned long enough for investigators to catalog it. Upon warming up, the bee reacts much as though coming out of anesthesia, stumbles around for a few moments, then just flies away.

WHAT GAME WAS BANNED IN SCOTLAND IN THE MID-15TH CENTURY, AND WHY?

LAST ISSUE’S Q&A How long ago did our beloved utility change its name to Ameren Missouri, and to whom did we begrudgingly write our checks out to before? Unless they’re off the grid, folks in our readership area who must pay for electricity begrudgingly wrote checks to Union Electric Co. until Dec. 31, 1997. That’s the date Ameren—provider of electricity unless there are thunderstorms, ice storms or other severe weather events—was formed by the merger of Union Electric and neighboring Central Illinois Public Service Co. of Springfield, Illinois.

TOWN TALK

ladue A St. Louis native, Eric C. Rhone has known Cedric The Entertainer since they went to Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, and they’ve been working together trying to make people laugh pretty much ever since. Cedric is the man onstage at the mic, of course. “I’ve always been with the guys in the meetings, doing the deals,” says Rhone, who lives in Ladue but spends much of his time in LA, working as producer with our beloved comedian from the Lou. Cedric stars in the hit CBS comedy series, The Neighborhood, now in its fourth season. “He makes a lot of people happy,” adds Rhone, in a bit of an understatement. Nowadays, Rhone and Cedric also enjoy working as co-executive producers of Johnson on the Bounce TV network, a comedy that premiered Aug. 1. Based in Atlanta, the show follows the fortunes of four brothers from different Johnson families who’ve been best buds since they were seated alphabetically by last name in elementary school. They’re all played by up-and-coming Black actors who are joined by stalwart D.L. Hughley for the series, which airs Sunday nights at 7 p.m. “African-American men are just like everyone else,” Rhone said. They are the same life choices and dreams, hopes, fears … but not the same WE COULD LEARN opportunities. How does Rhone view his contribution A LOT ... TO HELP GROW to helping us all ‘just get OUR REGION. along’? “This is a light take on understanding men, Black men in particular. For women, it’s a look inside all men. It’s refreshing and relatable. There are a lot of ‘a-ha’ moments. We’re continuing to humanize Black men.” And he believes humor is the best way to make that connection with a viewer. Comedy makes co-existing easier. “It’s better than sports,” he says. And Johnson is funny, thought-provoking, low-key and mostly family-friendly (depending on the family). Before this project, Rhone had visited the AtL a few times, but had never been able to get well-acquainted. “Last time was the first time I could scout locations.” OK, then; why Atlanta? In many ways, it’s more progressive than the StL, further down the road in terms of race relations. Even in a red state. “There are a lot of similarities,” Rhone says. “We could probably learn a lot from Atlanta to help grow our region.” Rhone and Cedric’s company is A Bird & A Bear Entertainment. Rhone is the bird because he picked up the nickname ‘Swan.’ It’s easier to savvy Cedric’s moniker: ‘Ceddy Bear.’ (Aw, shucks, man.) The two friends took their very scary creative leap of faith in 1994. “We were wondering whether to stay with our corporate jobs,” says Rhone. Considering just those two items on their resumes, it would seem they’ve made the right choice for themselves. Oh, before we forget, we’re aware many of you expect us to ask ‘The St. Louis question.’ Rhone graduated from Normandy High School in 1983, and points out that he’s still a Viking. PATTY by patty hannum

A FEW WEEKS AGO, I wrote about my love of

Kris Kristofferson and I was surprised by how many people I heard from who felt the exact same way. Who knew Kris had so many groupies in St. Louis? I love music even though I can’t sing or dance unless fortified with a few cocktails. NBC recently had a show called Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist that I never watched. But I think we all have our own playlist that gets us through the day. So here is mine: “Lovely Day” – Bill Withers: Oh, if all of us would wake up to this song in the morning, there would be no arguments at the breakfast table. Can you imagine being told ‘just one look at you. And I know it’s gonna be a lovely day?’ “Touch of Grey” – Grateful Dead: For those of us who are getting older and actually saw the band in concert, our bones are a little creaky. ‘Oh well, a touch of grey. Kind of suits you anyway.’ But we all know ‘I will get by. I will survive.’ “Waiting for the World to Change” – John Mayer: I often think I watch/read far too much about what’s

going on in the world. Can you be over involved? Which is why ‘We keep waiting (waiting). Waiting on the world to change.’ “Beautiful Day” – U2: Just think in about two months this will be part of all your playlists. As the heat diminishes and the trees start to change colors, you too will put on your sunglasses, start pretending you are Bono, and realize you love this town. ‘It’s a beautiful day. Don’t let it get away.’ “Ripplin’ Waters” – Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: Because of my anxiety and OCD, everyone tells me I should meditate. Yeah right. All that means is that for 12 minutes, my mind is in chaos! But there is one song that lets me make my mind just listen with no chaos. ‘You make me feel fine’. “Time Loves a Hero” – Little Feat: No reason, just not enough people ever listen to this band. They tour infrequently, but the last time they were at The Pageant, my 21 year-old self overtook my body and knew every word to every song. “Stayin’ Alive” – Bee Gees: Yes, this is a song Contact Patty at phannum@townandstyle.com.

that plays in my head on repeat many times a day. You see, I wear a mask. Sure, I’ve been vaccinated, but I am uninterested in getting the Delta variant or passing it along. I’ve worn a bra for 50 years. It is more uncomfortable than a mask, and it can’t help stop the spread of any disease. Why not wear a mask? So, if you see me in a mask, just know, I’m humming this Bee Gees classic. “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling (Remix)” – Hall & Oates: Now one just to embarrass me slightly. Whenever I hear this song on the radio, it takes me back 41 years, I was dating a guy I cared about a great deal. Every time it came on the radio, he would turn it up and sing along but change the words to ‘I’ve lost that loving feeling. Whoa that loving feeling.’ I’d correct him, but he never stopped doing it. It made more sense when he dumped me a few weeks later. As my friend Susan said, “Patty, that was a pretty big hint.” D.D., I don’t know what happened to you, but I am fabulous, and you blew it. THE VELVET

HAMMER by joan berkman

Q: As a small business owner, I’ve been grappling with a number of human resource issues recently. With plans to expand in the very near future, should I hire a full time HR professional? A: Although a small business doesn’t necessarily need to employ a dedicated HR manager, it’s important that someone in your organization be responsible for HR needs. The fact is that if you have employees, you need to be thinking about human resources. It’s that simple. Regardless of the size of your company, certain employees can be a liability and with someone managing your HR, this liability can be mitigated. Getting Started Compiling an employee handbook of your company’s policies and practices is a good first step. HR includes understanding all of the laws and regulations so you know how to handle everything from benefits and hiring practices to managing difficult employee issues. With training, an office manager could handle the daily oversight. However, if your immediate plans are to expand and you’re already dealing with employee problems, you may want to consider hiring a full time HR person. Until then, HR consultants can fill the gap to support your business and provide training to your staff. Whatever approach you decide on, HR needs to be an integral part of your strategic plan. This will not only ensure compliance with respective labor laws, but it also will provide a solid tool to communicate and implement best workplace practices. HR Manager Qualities There are a number of qualities you should look for when hiring an HR manager in order for them to provide effective oversight for your business. It is essential that you look for someone who not only has the skills but who also knows how to effectively encourage staff to be their best. Those skill sets should include possessing knowledge and expertise in HR as well as having engaging presentation skills and the ability to multitask. There may be times when an HR manager must deal with one employee’s personal complaint one minute and then answer a family leave question the next and then develop a recruitment strategy for a difficult-to-fill position. They also need to know how to deal with “gray” areas such as how to make decisions with “best available” information and have the wisdom to know when to get advice from a lawyer or other HR experts. In addition, and most importantly, they need to display a strong sense of ethics, leadership skills, the ability to motivate others, strong conflict resolution skills and a sympathetic attitude. A human resources manager who possesses these skill sets and qualities can ultimately be a major ingredient to pave the way for your organization’s success.

FINANCIAL EXPERT ADVICE Michael S. Weisman, CFP® Financial Adviser VICUS FINANCIAL ADVISORS

Lori A. Sullivan Director of Planned Gifts SAINT LOUIS ZOO

Why should I have a written financial plan? A written plan is essential to accomplishing financial goals and can be compared to using a map on a vacation road trip. Some people spend more time planning a vacation than planning their retirement! Where, when, whom and money are all factors in planning a successful vacation, same for financial planning.

Will my family get less if I name charities in my will? Not necessarily! When giving from an IRA, tax savings often provide more for family. COVER STORY PEDAL THE CAUSE

by stephanie wallace SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2010 , Pedal the Cause has raised more than $32,083,109 in the fight against cancer. It’s an impressive number, but what’s even more awe-inspiring is what it represents. It’s thousands of cyclists riding in support of cancer patients; it’s hundreds of volunteers ensuring the event runs smoothly; it’s 149,000 donors stepping up; and it’s funding to help make possible 175 research projects at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Pedal the Cause is a powerful example of how powerful it is when St. Louis comes together for a meaningful purpose. The event’s presenting sponsor has been Edward Jones since the first Pedal the Cause. The company also organizes one of the largest teams. To date, it alone has raised more than $3.5 million. “Edward Jones always is right in the thick of things when it comes to being involved in the community and giving back,” says Cathy Heimburger, a department leader at the company. Heimburger joined the organization directly out of college and initially didn’t expect to stay. However, after experiencing Edward Jones’ values and commitment, she knew it was where she wanted to be long term. Heimburger has ridden as part of Team Edward Jones since 2019. “Colleagues had been asking me to ride for years, but I just donated money because I had no experience cycling,” she says. “Then, in 2018, my childhood best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. It broke my heart. When a subject becomes personal, the impact is magnified.” When asked about cycling in Pedal the Cause again, she decided it was the perfect time to get involved and purchased her first bicycle. “I had no idea what I was doing, except that I was doing it for my friend,” she notes. Heimburger has come a long way from being a novice cyclist. Over the past two years, she has ridden 166 miles for Pedal the Cause and has pledged to bike another 100 for this year’s event. “From a fundraising perspective, I want to do something

CATHY HEIMBURGER

that is physically challenging,” she says. “I don’t want to just ask for people’s money and do something easy, especially since I’m riding to honor friends and families who are fighting against cancer.” Along with the physical challenge of cycling, she enjoys the camaraderie of the event. This year, Pedal the Cause will be held Sept. 25 and 26 at Chesterfield Mall. Along with riding one of the cycling routes, participants can opt to spin on stationary bikes or tackle the physical challenge of their choice through Inspired, a virtual way to engage. There also will be a livestreamed inspirational program to highlight the impact of the money raised. “I believe in Pedal the Cause because every donation is going directly to cancer research,” Heimburger AR OU ND TO WN says. “I love being able to tell people that if they give me $10 or $1,000, 100% of it is going to Siteman and Children’s.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

OFF the cuff w/claiborne amit dhawan

While in medical school, Amit Dhawan discovered a love of business and marketing, which eventually evolved into an interest in events. Around the same time, he noticed that St . Louis’ cultural impact was growing—from the success of the Cardinals to the popularit y of stars like Nelly and Cedric the Enter tainer. Dhawan was motivated to create Synergy Productions, a marketing and brand development company that connects celebrities, corporations, charities and communities. WHAT WA S YOUR FIRST E VENT ? It was a charit y event with a D. J. from New York at Velvet Lounge on Washington Avenue. I had to convince them to give me a night because I’d never done any thing before. Now, most of our events aren’ t even in St . Louis. We do the Super Bowl Music Fest , and we recently did a surprise per formance with Machine Gun Kelly at Lollapalooza. The biggest local event we do is Whiskey in Winter, which is the largest whiskey festival in the countr y. TELL ME ABOUT THE BL ACK AND WHITE BALL WITH NELLY. That was an amazing event we did for 10 years. The beginning was kind of a funny stor y. Jermaine Dupri and Janet Jackson were coming into town around the Four th of July, but for some reason the fair wasn’ t happening that year. We worked with the Contemporar y Ar t Museum and organized an awesome par t y, and it evolved into a gala that suppor ted organizations like Make-A-Wish and funded scholarships. Ever yone asks when the ball will come back . YOU’ VE ME T A LOT OF COOL PEOPLE . WHO SURPRISED YOU? There are a lot of people with celebrit y star power, but ver y few who have an other worldly feel—I call it the alien aura. One I’d say definitely has it is Lady Gaga. Just the way she is as a human being is incredible. WHAT ’S THE ONE THING YOU HAVE TO HAVE TO THROW A SUCCESSFUL E VENT ? Spectacle. No matter what you do, you’ ve got to create a sense of wonder. That ’s something we’ ve always taken pride in, even star ting out and doing small events. You have to figure out how you can put your own twist on it . WHAT ’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ELEMENT YOU AND YOUR TE AM HAVE TO DE AL WITH? Uncer taint y and the number of variables that go into planning. With the pandemic, things have been more up and down than ever. You’ ve got to adapt . OUTSIDE OF BUSINESS, HOW HA S THE PANDEMIC AFFECTED YOU PERSONALLY ? Before last year, I spent the majorit y of my time outside of St . Louis, and it ’s been absolutely incredible working from home. I have a seven-year-old daughter, and I’ ve gotten to interact with her on a daily basis. I went out of town for four days for Lollapalooza, and it was hard. Before, it would have been a no-brainer. I love St . Louis, and being here more also has made me engage with the cit y. I’ ve discovered I want to do more things here. WHAT ’S IN YOUR CLOSE T THAT FEW PEOPLE HAVE? Formal Indian attire. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF ST YLISH OR TRENDY ? I consider myself Amit . Snoop Dogg once commented that no matter what we’re doing, I’m always going to dress Amit . My st yle is just me. It ’s individualistic.

DOUBLE UTILITY REBATES!

WHAT ’S THE NE XT BIG EVENT ST. LOUIS IS READY FOR? The return of a musical festival. We’re one of the biggest metros without one. Luckily, we’re blessed with a number of great music venues.

Air Comfort Service will double your utility rebates through 8/31/21 for an extra $25-$900 in savings! 20 |

COVER STORY

by julia m. johnson THE CENTER FOR SPECIALIZED MEDICINE (CSM) at the new SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital is just days away from reaching its first anniversary. Although the milestone has been achieved quietly due to pandemic concerns, clinicians and staff are very excited. They want members of the public to know about the convenient care available at the outpatient center, which houses SLUCare Physician Group primary care and specialist offices. SLUCare ophthalmologist Dr. Oscar Cruz, head of the ophthalmology department at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, says his team members at the CSM’s Sight & Sound Center are thrilled to welcome patients to the new space. “One of the best things about receiving care there is the purposeful connectedness of both the physical facilities and the professionals who work there,” he says. “Many people come in with more than one health issue, and it’s easier for them to be seen at one site. For example, many of our patients who need glasses also need hearing aids, so they can make appointments for both in one day. Or, we might see an eye patient with diabetic retinopathy, and he likely can see his endocrinologist the same day, just 100 feet away. This is especially useful for patients who live outside St. Louis. SLUCare practitioners all work together to provide a high level of care in a convenient environment.” Cruz says having the full resources of the hospital and other departments in one place also increases patient compliance with care plans, and that leads to better health results. “We have found that patients are more likely to follow treatment guidelines and physician instructions if they don’t have to leave the building, drive off-site, find parking and visit a different office for another procedure or treatment,” he says. “When they have to go to multiple locations, it leads to confusion and time constraints, and continuity of care is lost.”

SLUCARE PROVIDERS OFFER CONVENIENT CARE AT THE NEW CENTER.

Kim Watts, director of clinic operations for SLUCare Physician Group, says the CSM also is implementing new technologies and processes that support a high level of care. “We are using Odoro, an online patient engagement system that saves time and improves the flow of office visits,” she says. “People can check in at a kiosk at the center, or they can do it from a smartphone before they arrive. This increases practice efficiency and safety so providers can focus more of their time on patient care.” Watts adds that the CSM is starting to use the online system to schedule patient appointments as well. “This function is being rolled out by department,” she says. “Using the system to set a visit takes less time than a phone call, and there’s no waiting to call during office hours or being placed on hold. Whether you are a new or established patient, you simply follow the easy-to-use prompts and choose a day and time. You also can schedule your next visit before even leaving the exam room.” Cruz and Watts add that the CSM is designed to be comfortable with amenities like pleasing indoor spaces and a courtyard for fresh air and relaxation. Patient greeters with tablets can help people navigate their visits, and all staff members are committed to providing a welcoming environment. “Patients tell us that they enjoy seeing their providers here,” Cruz notes. “We all work together, and we are all here to help.” &

Andy’s Adventures by Sandy Bauman Both Evie and Louis would like a dog, so they really enjoyed this story about Andy, a dog who can’t hear. Andy has lots of friends, especially a cat with an attitude, and they all like to play together in the leaves. The story was funny, and the picture with Andy sticking his tongue out was the best! Find this book at the Novel Neighbor in Webster Groves or at amazon.com.

FLY! by Sheri Block Glantz This book teaches you to dream big! It was hard to tell if the main character was a boy or a girl but it didn’t really matter—which was fun! Louis and Evie’s mom thought it was great for children that are a little more introverted to help them build their confidence. Find it at cre8ivewrites.com.

Molly Green Likes Worms by Doss Margiotta Evie is a worm lover, so she especially liked this book! Worms take care of the earth, and the pictures, which are full page, show us how. The word “poop” is in the book, which was funny. You can get your own copy by emailing mollygreenworms@gmail.com.

The Cow Cocoon by Rachel Nolen and Maria Price This book was really good because you learn about where all the animals live. Truman, the cow, wants to find his special place. He does this with the help of his friends, especially the firefly. The pictures in this book are really bright with lots of colors. It was fun to read. Find it at cowcocoon.com.

TOYOTA GR SUPRA 3.0 by robert w. paster WITH THE PROLIFERATION OF SUVS THESE DAYS, it’s sometimes hard to find

a car for someone who really enjoys driving. Toyota to the rescue. Despite not having a real performance sports car in a while, Toyota has stepped it up a notch with the 2021 Supra, resurrecting a name, spirit and performance level from its gloried past. Though the second largest car manufacturer in the world, Toyota seems unable to produce a sports car on its own, collaborating with BMW on the Supra. However, if you’re going to team with another company to produce a sports car, at least Toyota has the sense to work with excellent performance car manufacturers. The first thing you notice about the Supra is that it’s low, with a classic long hood, short deck sports car profile, lots of curves and angles, a “double bubble” top and aggressive air vent slits. Built as a true sports car to challenge the Porsche Cayman, the Supra set its sights high and has emerged as a fun, fast car with nimble handling and communicative steering that checks all the boxes, except a manual transmission. With near perfect front/rear weight balance, and a driving position in the rear half of the car, the pivot point seems to be right at your hips, making for a very natural and communicative turning feel, especially at high speeds. An active rear sport differential, active exhaust and Brembo 4 piston disc brakes in front give the Supra track cred. It’s also a blast to drive on the streets. The Supra can dart through traffic thanks to its small size, 382 horsepower engine and eight-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. The one advantage of the automatic is that it allows for launch control, for as often as you’ll need it or use it. In addition to straight-line acceleration, the Supra also offers very flat, neutral handling in the curves thanks to its tight, sporty suspension. Excellent brakes complete the trifecta of performance. All in all, it succeeds at being what it was built to be: a fun, little and powerful sports car.

Though entry and egress are slightly hampered due to its low profile and seating position, it is a sacrifice I am more than willing to make to drive a sports car. Once inside the two-seater, the interior room is abundant and pretty comfortable. The interior controls are clearly lifted from BMW, but that’s a good thing. The radio has a volume knob and real buttons for presets, though more advanced functions have to be done on the screen with a remote rotary knob based on BMW’s iDrive system, operated through a relatively small screen that looks like an afterthought. The shifter is also right out of the BMW parts bin and works well enough but takes some acclimation. Safety features include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detect, lane depart warning with steering assist and a heads-up display. The trunk is relatively small but not too bad for a small two-seat sports car. It would probably hold one large suitcase or two carry-ons. There is a tonneau cover to hide things below the hatchback. A 2.0 litre model is available for about $8,000 less, but it comes with a four-cylinder engine that only has 255 horsepower. It’s nice to see another sports car on the market, and the Supra will fill a performance niche at a very competitive price point. &

A closer look

at eye health National Eye Exam Month is an ideal time to think about the importance of healthy eyes and vision, but keeping it in mind throughout the year is an even better idea. Whether you are 8 or 80, being proactive about caring for your eyes can mean better health and sharper sight well into the future. SLUCare ophthalmologist and Saint Louis University School of Medicine professor Dr. Gabriela Espinoza says proper eye care means not just making sure you can see clearly, but also reducing the likelihood of eye health problems. Regular exams are the foundation of this effort, allowing doctors to pick up on certain conditions beforethey become serious, she notes. Everyone’s eye health needs are different, and some people need more frequent care, but here are some general recommendations about when to have your eyes checked. Children

“Eye health and vision screenings for kids under age 5 are needed because the child usually can’t tell parents if there is a problem,” Espinoza says. “When children are older, if there are any vision or eye health issues, parents should consult a doctor.”

Adolescents/Young Adults

Espinoza says that at every age, vigilance, communication and regular eye care can help uncover problems before they escalate. “Be proactive about your vision, eye health and safety, and don’t be afraid to speak up if you notice changes or problems,” she advises. “We know that 95% of eye injuries can be prevented by wearing protective glasses, for example. If you spend time in a workshop using machinery and materials that could fly into your eyes, like wood or metal, be sure to wear protection. Even mowing your yard, using a weed trimmer and setting off fireworks can be dangerous to the eyes, so use glasses that fully protect the area around them.”

30s and 40s

She says good quality sunglasses can be helpful as well. “They may be able to help protect against the progression of cataracts and macular degeneration by preventing excess sun exposure,” she explains.

“As you approach age 20, it’s a good idea to see an eye doctor for a comprehensive exam,” she notes. “Looking at the eyes may reveal early signs of health problems like diabetes or high blood pressure, or vision issues, including the need for glasses.” It’s also possible for eye diseases like glaucoma to show up at a relatively early age. Again, Espinoza recommends eye exams as you enter your 30s and 40s to check your vision and look for early signs of disease. “Everyone should get an exam at age 40,” she says. “Many patients note that a parent or grandparent had poor vision or blindness, so family history is extremely important to review as well.”

60 and up

“If you have made it to your 60s with nothing more than reading glasses, you’re probably doing well, but signs of conditions like cataracts may start appearing in this age group or earlier,” Espinoza says. “If you develop cataracts, they will advance with age, and you may not be able to do things like pass a driving test. Age-related macular degeneration, which causes central vision impairment, also becomes more prevalent at this time.”

Advice For Everyone

AUGUST 25, 2021

Anytime you experience an eye injury or notice a change in your vision such as difficulty reading, driving at night or seeing at a distance, or if you find that glare from sunlight blurs your vision, it’s important to be seen by a doctor. You also should have regular eye exams if you are diabetic or have hypertension, Espinoza says. “These are all good reasons to come in to the office without delay,” she advises. “The earlier we detect an eye or vision problem, the easier it may be to treat.”

WHAT ARE THE TWO T YPES OF AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)? AMD occurs in the eye when a part of the retina called the macula becomes damaged. The condition erodes your central vision and makes it difficult to discern fine details up close and far away. AMD is the most common cause of vision loss in people age 50 and older. ‘Wet’ AMD is the more serious of the two kinds and involves the formation of abnormal blood vessels under the retina. They can leak blood and fluid, causing the macula to become scarred. ‘Dry’ AMD is more common, occurring in 80% of AMD patients. It involves thinning of parts of the macula and the growth of tiny protein clumps called drusen. People with dry AMD lose vision more gradually than those with wet.

WHAT IS GLAUCOMA? Glaucoma is a disease that affects the eye’s optic nerve, which is made up of more than a million tiny nerve fibers. Fluid builds up in the front part of the eye, which increases pressure, causes the nerve fibers to die and results in blind spots in your vision. If all of the nerve fibers die, you become blind. The condition is a leading cause of blindness in people over age 60, but it often can be prevented with early detection and treatment. WHAT ARE CATARACTS? A cataract is a condition in which the eye’s lens becomes cloudy. Proteins in the lens break down and cause blurry, hazy vision and a decreased ability to detect color. People with cataracts also may experience double vision, light sensitivity, difficulty reading and problems seeing at night, and bright colors may appear faded or yellowish. Aging is the most common cause, but smoking, past eye injury or surgery, diabetes, excessive sun exposure, some medications like corticosteroids, and a family history of cataracts may contribute to the condition. showcase ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: PARC PROVENCE • Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia present a host of issues for those afflicted and for their friends and families. Often, the complexities of these diseases require treatment that is both specialized and person-centered, ensuring that health problems are addressed while also safeguarding quality of life. In the St. Louis region, some of the top memory care practitioners are affiliated with Parc Provence, a memory-care residential community that specializes in treating individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Dr. David B. Carr, clinical director of the Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Science at Washington University School of Medicine, serves as medical director at Parc Provence. Dr. Lenise CummingsVaughn, a specialist in geriatric medicine at the medical school, serves as associate medical director. “From providing appropriate daily activities for residents to monitoring their nutritional needs, their expertise influences everything we do,” administrator Kathy Aragon says. In addition to monitoring and treating the physical changes that cognitive diseases cause, the staff at Parc Provence offers activity programs tailored to fit each resident’s physical and social skills and personal interests. “We empower our residents by supporting and promoting their abilities,” Aragon explains. Residents participate in small- and large-group programs, as well as one-on-one activities. Certified therapists offer art and music interventions designed to help strengthen brain health while presenting opportunities for selfexpression that can contribute to an overall sense of well-being. “Our goal is to enhance the many strengths our residents possess,” Aragon says. “We do this by offering treatment that is designed to protect and promote health, enhance quality of life and foster personal fulfillment.” Every resident at Parc Provence receives care through an individualized treatment plan. Each plan is devised by a team of specialists who work in collaboration with the resident and family members when possible. The plan considers aspects of personal health, career and life experiences, current abilities, social skills, and other pertinent information. Once in place, the care plan is then monitored for effectiveness. “We conduct regular assessments of each resident’s abilities, altering the treatment plan accordingly to ensure the most effective and responsive level of care,”” Aragon says.

Though families use a variety of criteria when assessing memory care communities for loved ones, many of those who have selected Parc Provence note its home-like setting and comfortable private and public spaces. The community as a whole, from its gardens to its dining rooms, was designed to offer residents and their families the spirit of home and a sense of belonging. “When a family is looking for a memory care residence for a loved one, they also are looking for education, support and direction,” Aragon notes. “Our commitment to excellence extends to them, too. We understand the challenges they face and strive to offer the support and compassion they deserve.” Parc Provence is recognized in the St. Louis region—and throughout the United States—as a model of excellence in memory care. “We’re committed to serving the greater community and our residents, who are at the very heart of everything we do,” Aragon says. Parc Provence is leading the way in memory care, and members of its staff are available to answer questions and offer support. If you would like to learn more about memory care or are interested in scheduling a personal tour, please call or visit our website.

LIVER PROTECTION

PROTON POWER

Good cholesterol may be even better than previously thought. Research from Washington University School of Medicine shows that one type of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) may play a part in protecting the liver. The most well known function of HDL is delivering cholesterol to the liver for disposal. The new study found that a special type called HDL3 blocks gut bacterial signals when it’s produced in the intestine. If not blocked, those signals travel to the liver where they activate immune cells and cause inflammation, resulting in damage and potentially driving liver disease.

An important component of the Mercy Proton Therapy Center is now in place. Last month, a MEVION S250i gantry-mounted proton accelerator completed a seven-state journey to be placed at the new facility, which is currently under construction in Creve Coeur. Proton therapy uses high-energy beams of protons to precisely deliver radiation to tumors. It reduces unwanted radiation exposure to healthy tissue and has fewer side effects than traditional cancer treatments. Currently, there are only 41 proton centers in the United States, and Mercy’s is planned to open next summer.

YELLOW FEVER PROTECTION

There are several known risk factors associated with more severe COVID-19 infections, such as obesity, diabetes and a history of smoking cigarettes. New research from Washington University has found that cannabis use disorder (CUD) could have a place on that list. Using genetic epidemiological models, it was found that people with genetic predisposition to heavy and problematic forms of cannabis use were overrepresented in people with poor COVID-19 outcomes. More research is needed to determine if a predisposition to CUD and severe COVID-19 cases are caused by a common biological mechanism or if they are associated because of a causal process.

Researchers at Saint Louis University are enrolling people in a clinical trial for a new vaccine for yellow fever. Affecting around 200,000 people annually, the disease is a flavivirus, meaning it comes from the same family as the Zika and West Nile viruses. Yellow fever is spread by Aedes mosquitoes, and there have been recent outbreaks in Africa and South America. While there is an existing vaccine for the virus, it is not safe for people with egg allergies. The new study will investigate the effectiveness of a new type of vaccine that is made without eggs or other animal products. The phase 2 clinical trial also is being conducted at nine other sites in the United States.

Owner Bruce Goldford says this spacious home has been a joy to own for the past several years, and it was only a desire to be in Florida half the year that made him decide to sell it. “Otherwise, I’d never leave,” he notes. “It’s a phenomenal home, the best I have ever owned. When my family came to visit, the grandkids loved having fun on the lower level, and the adults enjoyed relaxing together upstairs. Everything about the house is beautifully designed and expertly made.”

Is it easy to entertain yourself and others in the home? This house was designed for people to enjoy themselves. The pool area is beautiful—it’s my favorite part of the property. I was able to host friends and neighbors there in 2020 when the municipal pools were closed, and everyone loved it. The lower level is more than 3,000 square feet, and it features a gym, poker room and theater room with a stage, which my grandkids loved using to put on shows. I set up three TVs in the common area so I could watch my favorite sports, and there is a bar area with refrigerators and a microwave. The house also has a great sound system with speakers throughout the property. Where have you most enjoyed spending time? I loved being in the family room just off the kitchen and in my home office on the main level. I really have enjoyed the lower level, too. It’s very spacious, so it was easy to host friends and have my personal trainer come over and work with me. Is the home comfortable year-round? There are four HVAC units in the house, including one dedicated to the master suite, so it’s never a problem

This property ran in our Aug. 11 issue with the incorrect photos. We apologize for the error and are featuring it again with the correct images.

keeping everyone happy at any time of the year. I personally prefer things to be warmer; when I had guests staying upstairs, they could have their areas set at whatever temperature they preferred, and I could keep the master suite at 78 degrees. What improvements have you made to the grounds? When I bought the property, I felt the landscaping was overdone, and it really overwhelmed the look of the house. I removed some large plant beds and took out trees that were blocking the view from the street. The front elevation of the home is gorgeous, and I wanted it to be more visible. Describe the neighborhood. The subdivision is a mix of older and newer homes. Values range from the $600,000s to about $2.7 million, so there is a lot of variety. I like that each home is on its own acre of land, and all of the properties have beautifully shaped lots. The location of the neighborhood is great—parks are close enough to walk to, and you have easy access to nearby highways.

MAKING more MEMORIES by stephanie wallace

photos by suzy gorman

Childhood homes hold a special place in our hearts, and for many of us, it would be a dream to be able to return, put our own personal stamp on the house and build even more memories. The homeowner of this Ladue property was able to do just that. She grew up in this house, and years later, she and her husband decided to purchase it from her family. They’ve created their own personal retreat that’s steeped in family history.

When did you first move into the house? We moved here around 1969. Back then, Ladue was horse country. There were miles of wide open spaces, and all the neighbors had horses. I took riding lessons across the street. I loved all of the green space when I was a little girl; I still do. What are some of your favorite features of the property? I love the privacy. It’s our own little enclave. We can be isolated in our own world. We don’t see any neighbors, so it's very private and quiet. Did you make any major renovations? We bought the property from family around 2012, and we’ve probably updated around 88% of it. Some of what we did includes redoing the kitchen, putting in a mudroom and adding an outdoor living space. How do you approach design? The way I decorate is influenced by my family history. There are a lot of things from my husband’s family and mine as well. We have artwork and artifacts that came from different relatives. My husband’s family collected English antiques, and I love using items from the travels of my grandparents and great-grandparents. There’s a unique mix of things, and every piece has a history. That’s where I start when it comes to design. Any items with fun stories? There’s an Orville Bulman painting that came from my husband’s grandfather. It’s a funny story. He had gone to a fundraising event in Palm Beach, and he actually met and talked with Bulman. One of the artist’s paintings was up for auction, and he ended up bidding on it. Well, when he came home to Atlanta from the event, he had two things: a hangover and that painting, which he actually hated. He ended up keeping it in his bathroom, but it was the one thing my husband always wanted from his grandfather’s house. It went from his bathroom to our kitchen.

What is your favorite space? I love our gardens and outdoor spaces. My mom was a big gardener, and I have many plants that she originally planted back in the ’60s and ’70s. My sister is a landscape architect, and she designed a lot of the landscaping and hardscaping. We also grow vegetables and fruits. It’s like our own little farm back here. Tell me about the animals. There have always been animals. When I was little, there were ponies. My dad was a beekeeper, and we still have bees. We have chickens, and my daughter raised some ducks one summer. That was fun until they got territorial about the pool and wouldn’t let the dogs in. The ducks got mean.

KITCHENS b y

m i t c h

KITCHENS HAVE ALWAYS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE HOME.

s c h n e i d e r

They’re not just a place to eat, but also where we congregate with family and friends. During the pandemic, many homeowners put their kitchens to even more use and started to look for ways to make their spaces more functional and aesthetically pleasing.

“The kitchen is really a space for the whole family, so it has to work for everyone,” says Keith Liston, president of Liston Design Build. “People are usually looking for that perfect blend of form and function; they want their kitchen to look beautiful, but they also want easy-to-clean surfaces, energy efficient appliances and durable materials that can stand up to kids, pets and company.” Last year gave many people the chance to evaluate and redesign their spaces. Liston says that trends his firm has seen include larger islands, extra storage areas and features like touchless faucets that address safety and sanitation. He also has seen people deviating from neutral color palettes to statement looks, like bolder wallpapers and paint colors. He says that this has been part of kitchens becoming more multifunctional during the pandemic. “It’s expanded far beyond just cooking and dining,” he explains. “The kitchen now is a popular room for families to turn to for things like virtual school and working remotely.” Heather McMahon, a designer at Signature Kitchen & Bath, says that it is clear that homeowners are rethinking the way they use their kitchens. “With a lot more time spent at home during the pandemic, many of our clients have realized how much their space isn’t meeting their family’s needs,” she says. “Kitchens have quickly reverted back to being the most important space in the home, therefore much more thought is going into the design. There has been a move to prioritize multifunctional elements to accommodate the growing need for at-home workspaces.” Along with design elements that increase function, McMahon notes that people are interested in using different materials. “Some of the most desirable items lately are natural quartzite or marble look-alike quartz countertops that we fabricate in house,” she says. “There also has been a high demand for two-toned cabinetry, large islands with seating and custom cabinetry for hoods.” Other trends include mixed metals, large quartz sinks, backlit mirrors, geometric tile patterns and microwave drawers. Some of the trends that have been popular in kitchens recently have extended to other parts of the home as well, according to Liston. “Nature is another big trend we’ve seen over the past year-and-a-half, not just in kitchens but in all areas of design,” he says. “People are installing large windows and airy blinds to let in the light, choosing colors that echo the outdoors, selecting natural wood finishes and making indoor plants a central feature. This was a huge part of home design in 2020, as people were looking for ways to feel less confined, and it’s a trend that has been holding on throughout this year as well.”
