FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
THE FACES BEHIND THE SCENE
WE WERE IN LOUISVILLE RECENTLY AND HEARD A COMMON RESPONSE WHEN WE TOLD EVERYONE FROM A WAITRESS TO A KENTUCKY SCIENCE CENTER EMPLOYEE THAT WE WERE FROM ST. LOUIS: “Oh, I love the City Museum!” Some had been, others were planning a trip. It’s quite the accomplishment for a local establishment to cross state lines with its accolades. (The Saint Louis Zoo does it constantly, having just been ranked the nation’s Best Zoo—again—by USA Today!) Both of these local treasures also landed a spot on the annual T&S Top 100 list, published in this issue. While we all have our favorite spots to go out for dinner, take the kids for a fun outing or enjoy some relaxing ‘me time,’ it’s always interesting to hear what other St. Louisans love. If nothing else, it’s a great way to get ideas on what to do and where to go! This year, we added a question about local nonprofits, which is a big part of what we do here at Town&Style. The best of the best (chosen by our readers) made the cut, and we’re happy to spread the word. I’m always enthusiastic about reviewing the final results because so many are my top spots as well. No matter how many ice cream spots we try, my kids, like true native St. Louisans prefer Ted Drewes. And a stop at Jilly’s for an enormous cupcake or ice cream is the usual routine whenever they come to the office with me … no crumb is left behind. The Muny is one of our yearly family traditions, as are countless events at the Missouri Botanical Garden and Forest Park, and our trips to Powell Hall and The Fox are cherished memories. For my birthday or any holiday, the kids prefer to shop locally (yay!) at the Kirkwood boutiques, including Christopher’s, which made our list. I could go on and on about numerous places in each category, but you’ll just have to trust that not only are these institutions, restaurants, boutiques, events and more special to our readers, they are special to us, too. So take note and support them all!

to provide supportive programs and services for people and families living with the developmental disability. Now celebrating its 65th year of service to St. Louis and eastern Missouri, the nonprofit is committed to providing hope, help and progress to the population it serves. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in five Americans is currently living with a disability, making it one of the largest minority populations in the nation. More than 65 percent of UCP Heartland’s program participants deal with intellectual and physical disabilities other than cerebral palsy like autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The organization’s goal is to help people of all ages with all disabilities find a path to sustainability and independence. “It’s a privilege to help families and individuals,” CEO Brenda Wrench says. “They inspire us every day with their strength, fortitude and humor in the face of challenges that would bring many of us to our knees.” She notes that the needs of these individuals often exceed the resources available, and it can be a lengthy process to get assistance like Medicaid. UCP Heartland’s five programs focus on life skills, community interaction, residential living, education and employment. “There’s something to help people at all different stages in their lives,” says Kathleen Beach, vice president of marketing and communications. The programs support individuals of all ages and abilities, including camps for kids, adult day care, and residential and employment support. Beach notes that the organization’s respite services are unlike any other family support offered in St. Louis. The program allows caretakers to register for scheduled care from highly skilled personnel, so they can find temporary relief from the daily stresses of caring for loved ones with disabilities. Services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and emergency care is available if the need arises. Beach says UCP Heartland offers countless volunteer opportunities to work with a variety of participants, and there are paid, seasonal positions for students through SWEP (Summer Work Experience Program). SWEP coaches work with teenagers and young adults with developmental disabilities to help them develop employment and life skills. The nonprofit is excited to continue to grow and expand, according to Beach. In June, a new center will open in Jefferson City to bring UCP Heartland programs to underserved populations in central Missouri. Locally, Beach notes that there have been several advances the organization is excited to adopt, such as eye gaze technology. It allows people who have difficulty communicating to use their eyes to type messages or select pre-programmed phrases. UCP Heartland also has invested in a fleet of fully-equipped vans. “One of our big goals is to bring people out into the community, and transportation is a big part of that,” Beach says. While UCP Heartland is evolving, Wrench says the community can expect it to continue to offer the best services possible. “We’ve already invested in the systems and upgrades that will be required to meet upcoming changes in health care delivery,” she notes. “We are excited to retain our status as a provider of choice.” &

compositions called Nritya Gurukula will be led by the great masters of Indian classical dance from June 8 through 14. Final performances and an award ceremony for workshop participants will be held June 15 at the high school. Guru Hema Sharma will receive the 2018 Lifetime Achievement award for her service of Indian performing arts and cultural representation in the greater Kansas City area (or, if you prefer, the much, much greater St. Louis area) for more than 40 years. The award includes a $1,000 cash prize, a plaque, shawl and a performance by her students. The national American Natya Idol competition will allow students to showcase their skills and receive constructive feedback on various aspects of dance forms: abhinaya (expressions), dance complexity, clarity in poses and choice of music.

Those special nine cobblestoned blocks on the riverfront to work, eat and play are also becoming a unique spot to live, what with 49 apartment homes taking shape as Peper Lofts at 701 N. 1st St. Pronounced like the extremely focused eyes of ‘Tom,’ not the common tabletop spice, Peper touts itself as the first multifamily residential development in the city’s oldest district; that is, since the city’s establishment 250-plus years ago. The six-story, 106,000-squarefoot Christian Peper building is in the midst of a $12 million renovation that will welcome residents late this year. The repurposed building—120 years old, just a baby by The Landing’s standards—will feature living space on floors three through six with views of the recently completed Gateway Arch grounds, the Big Muddy and the downtown skyline. A highlight of the redevelopment is a rooftop sundeck with almost 360 degrees of unobstructed views, with areas for lounging, grill stations and a species-specific relief area for canines. Ranging in size from 650 to 1,100 square feet, apartments will be a mix of 23 two-bedroom, onebath and 26 one-bedroom, one bath units. The massive, original timbers are being preserved as focal points in the units and common areas. The first floor will feature a coffee bar, fireplace lounge, workout room and business center. The building itself is just steps away from the north entrance to the newly renovated Gateway Arch grounds, the riverfront bicycle trail, Lumière Casino and more than half a dozen local eateries, with more set to open over the next few months. Display units should be available for viewing by July 3, right in time to welcome tens of thousands of people to the renovated Gateway Arch Museum opening and Fair St. Louis. Abstrakt Marketing, which already occupies the building next door, will be taking the entire second floor of Peper, connecting it to their existing space to create a contiguous, way-cool, office footprint. Developers presently are negotiating with potential tenants for the two remaining commercial spaces: 5,000 square feet on the south side of the first floor and 4,000 square feet on the lower level, which could be yet another casual dining space in the neighborhood. Since more folks will live on The Landing, it’ll be more a neighborhood than a district. Right?

The 10th American Natya Festival will spotlight 10 days of Indian classical dance through workshops and performances June 8 through 17. The celebration will kick off with a week of dance workshops at Just Dancing Studios in Manchester and end with the festival itself, June 15-17, at Rockwood Summit High School in Fenton, featuring 18 mesmerizing performances from groups across the country. You’ve heard of Bollywood, the thriving film business on the subcontinent? American Natya Idol, a national classical dance competition fashioned roughly after the neverending American Idol franchise, will be a highlight of the three-day festival. The organizer, Soorya Performing Arts, will commemorate the anniversary by focusing on education, performance and recognition. The annual platform to create, discuss, present works and showcase new ideas is part of a multipronged task to preserve and promote this ages-old dance style. This year, more than 150 artists will entertain the growing international audience for this event, which provides a rare opportunity for dance enthusiasts to enjoy the prestigious IndianAmerican classical dance companies rarely seen in the metro. For the first time in St. Louis, a weeklong master dance workshop focusing on dance music
In the heyday of drive-in movies—the ’50s through the ’70s—St. Louisans flocked to outdoor theaters such as the 66 Park-in, The Airway Twin and The Holiday. They’re all long gone, but take the retro trip halfway in Back to the Future for some funky nostalgia. (Funky!? Just a tad further back … how ’bout swell?) Tom Stockman, editor of the website We Are Movie Geeks, will give a talk at 7 p.m. June 14 at the Missouri History Museum about the drive-ins that existed throughout the metro back in the day. Stockman will pepper the talk with hundreds of images, discuss the movies that played and share several personal anecdotes. (Hey, kids—you’ll see the movie better from the front seat!) Local singer/songwriter Kevin Renick will be on hand to perform a couple of tunes, including one he wrote about the twilight of the drive-ins. This nostalgic trip back in time is free, so no need to hide the little guys in the trunk.

It looks as though Shop ’n Save has gone as far as it can go, succumbing to competition from all sides, and not just the big boys. The rapidly changing billboard at Lindbergh and Manchester might have been a hint. Not long after Fresh Thyme Farmers Market opened at that intersection, a somewhat snarky
message appeared with an arrow pointing eastward, announcing in essence: ‘Hey—why stop here? You should shop over yonder, because Shop ’n Save has plenty of fresh, organic selections, too!’ Full disclosure: We paraphrase. Recently, Schnucks took over the billboard and used, essentially, the same message: Its Kirkwood supermarket is in that direction, too … just a block or so farther down. But, at this writing, the Schnucks billboard shows doughnuts and the phrase, ‘Made Fresh Daily.’ SuperValu, based in Minneapolis, has been feeling the heat from shareholders: They’ll be selling the Shop ’n Save chain, which includes stores in the metro and on the East Coast. Competition has been heating up online and in the real retail world. F’rinstance, Amazon bought Whole Foods for $13.7 billion last August. Shop ’n Save—with 39 locations in Missouri and Illinois, most of them in
TOWN TALK and around The Lou—has seen its market share everywhere slip over the last few years. SuperValu desperately has needed to take action to improve its stock price, which has plunged more than 80 percent in three years. (Sorry, shoppers: Bagging your own groceries hasn’t trimmed costs nearly enough. The company is shifting its focus from retailing to the more stable wholesaling business.) Our esteemed metro daily reports that Schnucks remains the metro’s top grocer, with 29.2 percent of the market; research shows Shop ’n Save slipped from 15.2 percent in 2016 to 12.6 percent in 2018. Wow. I would’ve thought Schnucks commanded even more … but very-big-box store Walmart, perhaps the biggest grocer in the solar system, has gobbled up a huge slice of the pie over a generation. Meanwhile, there’s Target, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and local icon Straub’s. There’s online shopping and grocery delivery. There have been rumblings about Schnucks taking over Shop ’n Save locations once all is said and done. But as they haven’t said anything, we can’t tell you what they’re planning.

The message on the illuminated, portable roadside MoDOT sign is inscrutable to anyone who has been living in their mom’s basement with no TV or computer for the past 25 years: ‘Not Buckled Up? You’re Killing Me, Smalls.’ This somewhat obscure phrase of derision is from The Sandlot, a 1993 baseball movie, when dimwitted Scotty Smalls—after being asked a few times if he wants a s’more, replies several times with the question, “Some more what?” The sign—on the shoulder of northbound Lindbergh Boulevard at Ladue Road—needs to be near cinematic cognoscenti, like The Tivoli. It’s what some would call too clever by half. The state highway department was doing all of us superior drivers a favor when it reminded all of you to use turn signals, if you use them at all, in advance of—not during—a turn: ‘Turn Signals … The Original Instant Message.’ (Our fave highway transportation department sign, which may or may not have been photoshopped: ‘Eyes On The Road And Your Head Out Of Your Apps.’)

I HOPE EVERYONE HAD A LOVELY MEMORIAL
Day weekend. Perhaps you celebrated by eating some barbecue, heading to the community pool, working in your yard or visiting the gravesite of someone who gave up their life while serving in the U.S. military which, as you know, is the purpose of Memorial Day. Like most people, I take the men and women who serve in the military for granted. My grandfather served in both world wars, my dad during World War II and my brother in Vietnam, which makes me proud. Some saw battle, others were in support positions. None of them ever really talked much about their experiences, but to be honest, I never really asked. But I started thinking about the kind of person who would volunteer for the military when my sister-inlaw Mary’s mother passed away. Grace Steck, who died in April at the age of 99, was one of the ‘baddest asses’ I didn’t even know I knew. Let me explain. Mary has been married to my brother for nearly 50 years, so I’ve been with Mrs. Steck at family functions for years. She was always the nice woman who greeted me warmly but spent time talking to my mom or hanging with her grandchildren. I knew she had been in the service during World War II but never thought much about it until she went on an Honor Flight, a flight supported by nonprofits to take veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials built in their honor. Mrs. Steck finished nursing school and wanted to join the Army. Her dad said no unless war broke out. She enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor. After completing boot camp and officers' training in Alabama, she was shipped overseas to start her five-year tour in London with stints in Ireland, France and Germany. Mrs. Steck arrived on the beaches of Normandy the day after the invasion to treat the wounded. She landed in water that was still bloody, and her job as a surgical nurse was to try and save as many soldiers as possible. Mrs. Steck was in her 20s. She could have stayed home and no one would have thought anything about it. She didn’t have to go to war. She met her husband during officers' training camp and when they both found themselves in France, they decided to marry. They had to get permission from their general, Dwight Eisenhower. Thankfully, he said yes. They were married, came back to St. Louis, had nine children and she put all of her uniforms, pictures and memorabilia from the war in her foot locker in the basement. Mrs. Steck’s story is one for the movies, but to her and her family, it was no big deal. It was just what one woman did to serve her country. I picture her landing on the beach in Normandy and am reminded of a quote from the Canadian poet Atticus: “She was powerful not because she wasn’t scared, but because she went on so strongly despite the fear.” Thank you Grandpa, Dad, John, and Mr. and Mrs. Steck for your service. I am humbled by your bravery. ▶ Contact Patty at phannum@townandstyle.com.

EXPERT: David Bovier of Ken Miesner’s Flowers » Deep burgundy and merlot are the colors of 2018, and you can expect the trend to carry into 2019. They work well with blush tones and are appropriate for any season. » Succulents add texture, dimension and pattern. Plus, their soft sage green works well with any color palette.
» Stackable bands let brides mix metals, textures and stone shapes.

» The most popular wedding band for ladies? A shared-prong eternity band with round diamonds is never going out of style! It’s a classic, clean look that offers plenty of sparkle.

» Leave the mermaids behind! Fuller, easier to wear skirts are becoming more common.
» Don’t expect his-and-her matching wedding bands. Most grooms opt for simple, white gold rings, while brides tend to pick something a little more unique like a band with stones or vintage details. » Wedding bands are worn every day for years, so most brides don’t go crazy or follow trends too closely.
REGISTRY EXPERT: Pollie Lammert Hughes of Sallie Home » Couples are looking for china! Most want something playful for everyday use and a more formal pattern for special occasions. » Sterling silver is on the way out. Couples are gravitating toward pewter, stainless and silver plate options.
» Don’t expect everything to come from the same pattern or line. Most couples want to be creative and unique, so they’ll pick salad, dinner and dessert plates from different collections. » Online shopping may be the new norm, but couples want the experience of seeing (and touching) their registry items in person.

COVER STORY
LOCAL LEGACY LACHEF CATERING by stephanie wallace THERE ARE A LOT OF ELEMENTS
that must work together seamlessly to create a memorable event, no matter the size. From venue and decor to the guest list and entertainment, there are quite a few moving pieces to juggle, but one of the biggest decisions is always: What will everyone eat? LaChef Catering makes it an easy choice. Through fresh menu items JENNIFER PROST GIERHART and professional service, it strives to make every wedding, private event and corporate function a success. President and owner Jennifer Prost Gierhart always has understood the responsibility required to own a local business. She grew up watching her father run his company and says it influenced her work ethic and lifestyle. “I knew I wanted my own catering company,” she explains. “I loved the idea of the hospitality business. I’ve always enjoyed working with food, and I watched a lot of cooking shows when I was younger!” Prost Gierhart received her degree in hospitality restaurant management from Missouri State University and worked in the private catering industry for more than a decade before realizing her childhood dream. She opened Hart Catering Company in 2016 and specialized in corporate events, but her mind was set on expanding. The opportunity came when the former owner of LaChef wanted to retire. “I bought LaChef and merged the two businesses,” Prost Gierhart says. “Hart Catering is still our corporate carry-out line.”
LaChef already was an established local caterer when Prost Gierhart took over, and she is mindful of its legacy. She considers herself a second-generation owner, carrying on the company’s proud tradition alongside vice president Melissa Sinamon, who has been with the company for three decades. “LaChef has been serving our community for 37 years,” Prost Gierhart says. “We’ve kept the same professional staff, including our executive chef, Mary Peura, who has been with the company for more than 15 years. I rely on her knowledge of the company and its recipes to run the kitchen.” While clients can expect the same high-quality service and presentation, Prost Gierhart says she did bring some changes to LaChef, like introducing a new menu focus with ingredients sourced from local vendors. “The quality of food has always been high, and we still serve everything fresh out of the kitchen," she notes. "There’s just a little more attention now on ingredients because of my background in nutrition.” That means the catering company can handle different dietary needs, including gluten-free and vegan diets. “We stay up on the latest trends and offer a personalized experience,” Prost Gierhart says. She notes LaChef is known for its innovative, themed cocktail parties, and it takes a creative, unique approach to each dish. Also notable is the highly trained staff, many of whom have been with the company for years. “They are the most professional servers you could ask for,” she says. “That, combined with fresh, quality food, ensures that every event is on point.” Prost Gierhart hopes LaChef continues to serve St. Louis for years to come. She jokes that she’s appointed her 4-month-old daughter as the future leader of the company. “I’m already trying to groom her as the third generation,” she says. “She’ll keep the LaChef name around for another 40 years!” &

KATIE MAGUIRE & LUKE LAYDEN
MARCH 25, 2018
by julia m. johnson | photos by sara taylor reed KATIE MAGUIRE AND LUKE LAYDEN BOTH HAD FOND MEMORIES OF VISITING THE
Missouri Botanical Garden when they were young, so it seemed like a natural choice for their wedding and reception. They held a small, intimate ceremony on the lawn before guests went indoors for a party in Monsanto Hall. “We saw the outdoor green space as a blank canvas with the beauty of nature,” Katie says. The couple first met in high school. “We went on a road trip with a group of friends, and Katie drove while I sat in the front with her,” Luke says. “Our friends fell asleep in the back, so we ended up talking and really hit it off.” Their first date was a trip to Six Flags, and on New Year’s Eve two years ago, Luke proposed in the same Central West End spot where they shared their first kiss. “We wanted a small, close-knit wedding with a bit of an Art Deco theme,” Katie says. “I’m an interior designer and am earning a master’s degree in architecture, so I love working with color and form.” Her bridesmaids chose their own dress styles in different jewel tones with flowers to match, and the groomsmen sported coordinating bowties. Luke is a fiction writer and poet, so the reception decor included items like an old-fashioned typewriter and books by authors like Neruda and Faulkner, plus a small model plane to symbolize the pair’s love of travel. “Three of our grandfathers have passed away, so we remembered them with special seats left empty at the ceremony,” Luke says. “We put their photos on each chair, and it really felt like they were there with us.” Katie says a belated honeymoon will appeal to the couple’s classical sensibilities, as they plan to tour ancient monuments and ruins in Greece later this summer. They recently moved to Roanoke, Virginia, where Luke is pursuing a master’s degree at Hollins University and Katie works for Marcia Moore Design. The groom is a Clayton High School and Maryville University grad, and the bride attended Webster Groves High School and Stevens-The Institute of Business and Arts. &

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED CARDIOVASCULAR CARE
SLUCARE CARDIOVASCULAR SERVICES IS HEADQUARTERED AT UNIVERSITY TOWER IN RICHMOND HEIGHTS AND PROVIDES COMPLETE CARDIOVASCULAR CARE FOR PATIENTS. IT IS THE ONLY CARDIOVASCULAR PRACTICE IN THE ST. LOUIS METRO AREA TO EARN PATIENT-CENTERED SPECIALTY PRACTICE RECOGNITION FROM THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR QUALITY ASSURANCE (NCQA). PICTURED ON THE COVER: CARDIOVASCULAR SURGEON DR. COVER STORY
PATIENTS FIRST SLUCARE PHYSICIAN GROUP by julia m. johnson
now, but it’s actually a daily guiding principle for SLUCare Physician Group. It’s also of deep personal concern if you or a loved one is a patient receiving care. SLUCare Cardiovascular Services at University Tower in Richmond Heights recently received a prestigious designation from an important evaluator of health care quality, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) in Washington, D.C. The department successfully completed the NCQA Recognition Program, showing that it values high-quality health care delivery and advanced clinical care. It’s the only cardiovascular practice in the St. Louis metro area to be given the honor, and only the second in the entire state. It’s also the first SLUCare practice to receive the designation, which must be renewed every three years. There are different levels of recognition, and SLUCare scored well enough to achieve the highest, Level 3. So what does NCQA recognition mean for patients and families? “It shows them that first and foremost, we are patient-centered,” says Beth Page, RN, MSN, executive director of clinical quality and population health. “It tells them that we look carefully at each patient from the moment they come in, evaluate their needs, and make sure there is timely communication with referring doctors and families. Patients are more educated these days and are looking for reassurance of this kind. If you are considering two different physicians, and one has NCQA recognition but the other doesn’t, you’ll likely go with the one who does.” The process of gaining NCQA recognition is lengthy, but it’s an important effort because it shows patients that SLUCare puts their best interests first, according to Page. She spent many months working to compile and submit the required care quality data along with clinical site manager Jeanne Lawo, RN, MSN, and Katie Sniffen, clinical coordinator for Saint Louis University’s Center for Interprofessional Education and Research. Dr. Michael Lim, director of the Cardiovascular Center, was instrumental in the process as well. The team had to provide data in six areas, including care access and communication and measuring and improving performance. When the team members learned they had received the recognition, they were understandably excited, Lawo says. “We were proud and thrilled to share the news with our colleagues,” she notes. “We are planning a celebration to commemorate it, putting the NCQA seal on our materials, and educating the public about why it’s important. We think it really demonstrates the high level of care we provide patients.” Sniffen says SLUCare administration is proud of the accomplishment, too, and considers it a stepping stone for other departments to earn the designation. Now that she and her colleagues are familiar with the program, they will help other SLUCare practices prepare their own submissions. Sniffen says the team carefully documented the application process and created analysis tools and timelines to make it easier for other departments. Lim says it’s important to make NCQA recognition a system-wide effort because of the message it sends to patients and families. “There is no higher goal in health care than to provide the best care to all patients,” he notes. “This designation recognizes our commitment to quality.” &

Hot & Sour Pork Soup, Bucatini, Roast Chicken, Mixed Greens Salad, Cheese Board, Beef Brisket
THIS IS THE MORE CASUAL, NEXT-DOOR MEMBER OF THE OLIVE + OAK FAMILY. It has a light,
cheery ambience, but there is nothing light-weight about the menu (except maybe the prices). The food emphasizes fresh, local ingredients whenever possible, along with the same gourmet standards that apply to its sister restaurant. There are a handful of starters and dinners and very attractive daily specials that offer a lot of bang for the buck. The interior is appealing, but without the sultry and noisy atmosphere next door. The Clover and The Bee promotes itself as ‘family friendly,’ but oddly, most of the tables are two-tops (many can be pushed together). Carryout is available, and the array of sweets near the register is deadly. There is also a full wine and beer menu and a few kids’ meals. Four tempting soups are offered, in either cup or bowl size, and we sampled the Hot & Sour Pork Soup cup ($4), Ribollita ($4) and the Sweet Potato-Roasted Pepper Bowl ($7). The first was excellent as a super savory broth with bits of tender cooked pork and onions. The flavor was lightly sweet with hints of vinegar. The sweet potato soup was thick, more puree than soup, and had a distinctive Chinese five-spice flavor that was too strong for my taste. The Ribollita, Italian vegetable and bread soup, was stellar as a rich, herb-infused broth with beans, veggies and crusty bread. The Mixed Greens Salad ($10) was deliciously fresh. The variety of lettuces, with ruffled and spiked edges, was fresh and well-combined with red grapes, salami slices, creamy goat cheese and bits of roasted cauliflower. It was dressed with a light balsamic vinaigrette that didn’t get in the way of the natural flavors. If I had any gripe, it was that I wanted more salami in there! The dinner plates, while not overly generous, offer enough food for the average eater. A plateful of thick Bucatini ($15) was simply prepared with a sauce of egg yolks, bacon and Pecorino Romano. A healthier version of the classic carbonara sauce, this one relied on eggs and cheese for richness rather than cream, and on pepper and bacon for heightened flavor. The bacon was exceptionally meaty and delicious. A platter of Jumbo Shrimp ($16) was well-conceived in flavor, but a bit disappointing in that the shrimp, five of them, were rather small. They came on a huge serving of white cheddar grits covered with a sweet, onion-flavored tomato ragu. My favorite meals here were the Friday and Saturday specials: Roast Chicken ($18) and Beef Brisket ($18), respectively. The first was a half bird beautifully browned and served with stuffing, caramelized root veggies and a thin, flavorful, tarragon gravy. Excellent all around. The brisket came sliced thin and piled over delicious, curry-laced roasted potatoes. Topping it all was a ‘salad’ of chopped tomatoes, cucumbers and red onions doused with vinaigrette. It may sound weird to combine the cold and hot foods, but it worked quite well. A ‘sauce’ of garlic, lemon and oil came for the brisket. You won’t be able to pass up dessert if you so much as glance at the display case. I caved to a delicate Apple Pie Rosette pastry ($5) and Pot de Crème ($6), which came with shortbread. Both were superb. &

RED CARPET FACIAL
TURNS OUT, A HOLLYWOOD DERMATOLOGIST HAS TRADEMARKED THE NAME Runway Facial and is selling the treatment to the Hollywood elite for crazy amounts of money. You can skip the plane ride—and movie star price tag—and get your own version right here. “The purpose of this multistep facial is to get rid of dead skin and make you positively glow for a special event,” says Dr. Joseph Muccini of MidAmerica Skin Health & Vitality Center. “How we do that is up to you. The four components we offer can be mixed and matched.” He says that while the components are not new, their combination is a fresh take on achieving specific results.
Father’s Day
1. RADIOFREQUENCY (RF) treatment to the skin is usually done first or it can be skipped, depending on your time allotment, how close the event is and your budget. Muccini uses RF because it goes a little deeper than the surface, creates collagen remodeling (particularly if you do a series of treatments), and heats the skin to increase blood flow and make it look softer and plumper. 2. MICRODERMABRASION involves mild buffing with a hand-held, Dremel-type device to polish and exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells. 3. A CUTERA SURFACE LASER can be used next and is not as deep as RF, but it does improve texture and glow. Over time, if done in a series of treatments, it also smooths pigment irregularities. 4. THE LAST STEP IS A GENTLE CHEMICAL PEEL that removes any dead skin cells microdermabrasion might have missed, giving a smooth, shiny finish. As with the other steps, the depth of the peel depends on how much time there is before the event. If you have two weeks, a deeper peel will produce even better results, but it requires a few days of down time. “The microdermabrasion and chemical peel get rid of the stuff that keeps your skin from looking its best: dead skin cells and surface irregularities,” Muccini explains. “The RF and laser increase blood flow and water to the skin, making it glow and have a youthful radiance, so you are ready for the carpet.”

DITCH THE HARSH RETINOL
IDEALLY, A SKIN CARE REGIMEN SHOULD WORK WITH YOUR SKIN TYPE, diminish encroaching fine lines, reverse sun damage and increase the thickness of the dermis. However, prescription RetinA comes with a price beyond the cost: redness, itching and skin peeling. But it’s not necessary. Dr. Michele Koo, a plastic surgeon in private practice and creator of Dr. Koo Premier Skincare, has developed Rejuvenate, a medical-strength retinol with additional antioxidants to stimulate skin cells to regenerate more rapidly and replace damaged skin with younger, healthier cells.
A UNIQUE FEATURE OF DR. KOO’S PRODUCT IS THAT IT COMES IN DIFFERENT STRENGTHS: REJUVENATE GENTLE is for sensitive skin that cannot tolerate any retinol due to irritation. Koo says this is a lifesaver for the redhead or fair-skinned individual who desperately needs damage prevention, wrinkle reduction and skin revitalization. REJUVENATE MODERATE is designed for the next level of intervention for skin with mid-level

wrinkles and damage.
REJUVENATE ADVANCED may be needed for skin with deeper wrinkles and advanced sun and
age damage.
REJUVENATE ULTRA, the highest strength retinol, is for skin with deep wrinkles and severe sun and
age damage.
Koo explains that the gentler solution with antioxidants requires four to six months before improvements are noticeable rather than the typical six weeks. “You will achieve astounding results with consistent use of a simple, pH-balanced system of skin care,” she says.

THE CHIN IS IN
MANY OF US FIRST NOTICE SIGNS of aging around the jaw with development of a ‘second chin’ or a softer appearance. Firming up calls for a combination approach, says Mary McKaig, RN, a cosmetic nurse with Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center. “Many of our clients have a laxity to the jaw area and some fat under the chin, but they aren’t ready for a face-lift,” she says. “I use a combination approach that sometimes can be done in one treatment or multiple ones over time, depending on budget and desired results and downtime.”
McKAIG HAS SEVERAL TOOLS IN HER TOOLBOX THAT, WHEN MATCHED TO THE INDIVIDUAL, CAN ACHIEVE STRIKING RESULTS: THERMAGE UNDER THE CHIN AND ALONG THE JAW LINE: This one-time, noninvasive radiofrequency therapy can achieve mild lifting and skin tightening and stimulate collagen growth. It is a combination of heat energy to treat deep tissue and cooling effects to protect the skin surface and deliver better patient comfort. KYBELLA: An injection of synthetic deoxycholic acid under the chin that destroys fat cells so they no longer can store or accumulate fat. On average, three treatments will produce noticeable results. DERMAL FILLER ALONG THE JAW: This can give further lift and contour to the jaw. Fillers like Radiesse, Juvederm Voluma or Restylane Lyft last one to two years. TOPICAL FIRMING CREAM: Nectifirm by Revision helps with lifting and tightening of the skin. Nectifirm is a specialized cream containing peptides, vitamins and plant extracts to tighten the neck and relieve the ‘crepe-like’ or leathery epidermis of the neck and décolletage. McKaig says it should be applied twice a day for best results.

FROM ADOLESCENT ACNE TO ADULT ROSACEA
ROSACEA IS THE SCOURGE of middle age. It’s a common skin condition that causes redness, visible blood vessels and sometimes small, red bumps on the face. These signs and symptoms may flare up for a period of weeks to months and then diminish. The FDA recently approved a topical treatment for the flushing of rosacea, Rhofade cream 1%. Dr. Natalie Semchyshyn, a SLUCare dermatologist, explains how rosacea acts: “Skin that flushes in response to triggers like heat, spicy foods, red wine, embarrassment or cold can develop a permanent redness over the cheeks, nose and chin. That’s what Rhofade addresses.” She says the cream acts as a vasoconstrictor, causing the blood vessels under the skin that dilate in response to triggers to constrict and become less noticeable. It takes 30 to 60 minutes for the effect of the cream to kick in, but it lasts for 12 hours. It disappears into the skin, and you can apply makeup or sunscreen over it.
Broken blood vessels under the skin caused by sun damage and pimple-like eruptions need additional treatment.
SEMCHYSHYN SAYS A GOOD SKIN CARE PROGRAM WILL ATTACK ROSACEA ON ALL FRONTS: USE RHOFADE FOR RED FLUSHING. APPLY SUNSCREEN WITH ZINC OXIDE DAILY BECAUSE IT PROTECTS BEST AGAINST UVA RAYS THAT STIMULATE ROSACEA. USE TOPICAL ANTIOXIDANTS LIKE VITAMIN C TO STRENGTHEN THE SKIN AFTER UV DAMAGE. TAKE ORAL ANTIOXIDANT SUPPLEMENTS TO PREVENT DNA DAMAGE FROM SUN EXPOSURE. AVOID THE TRIGGERS THAT CAUSE FLUSHING. GET LASER TREATMENT TO GET RID OF BROKEN BLOOD VESSELS.

A SPECIAL PLACE FOR MEN
FIRST THERE WAS THE LIFESTYLE CENTER, which mostly caters to women. But medical director Dr. Richard Moore wanted a place geared toward his male clients, so he opened The Edge for Men next door in Clayton. “It has a private entrance and separate areas for men,” he says. Here, he offers a wide variety of medical and cosmetic services: hormone therapy for low testosterone and erectile dysfunction, hair replacement, laser hair removal, body sculpting, and antiaging treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers. Turns out, men want to look good too, just discreetly. Not surprisingly, the hormone therapy has attracted many clients. “When men are in their 40s through 60s, their hormone levels drop,” Moore says. “They start having mood changes, trouble in bed and fat deposits around the middle. Some men treat low T by giving themselves weekly injections, which cause peaks and valleys of effect. We use bio-identical hormone pellets, which take 5 minutes or so to inject and last four to six months with a more steady release to reverse or stabilize hormone levels. It’s a much nicer way to live.” For hair replacement, Moore has found NeoGraft the most reliable and natural looking way to replace hair. It uses an automated punch to score the follicles to be harvested. The tiny grafts are extracted from the lower areas of thick hair and implanted in the sparse areas, resulting in a fuller, more naturallooking hairline and increased hair density where loss has occurred. Laser hair removal is also popular, especially on the back and neck. Body sculpting with gentle liposuction can get rid of love handles and other stubborn fat deposits in men who are at or near their ideal weight.

NEW SKIN: JUST A FEW NEEDLES AWAY
WHO NEEDS CROWS’ FEET, ACNE SCARS, skin laxity and texture issues? If those are your concerns, you need to get needled. Infini highintensity focused radiofrequency microneedling, to be exact. Carol Anderson, a board-certified nurse and owner of Nouveau Medspa, explains how it works. “Infini has a small head that delivers fractionated radiofrequency energy through 49 gold-plated, polarized microneedles,” she says. “They are very thin, and the gold plating protects the skin as it goes in. RF energy is conducted across the needles, generating heat below the skin’s surface.” Earlier RF machines delivered energy to a plate on the surface, but later models evolved to achieve deeper results, and healthy skin is interspersed with the skin treated by the needles. The depth of needle penetration depends on what is being done; deeper lines need deeper treatment. Overall skin tightening and collagen remodeling are the deepest. Acne scar treatment depends on the depth of the problem and if you’ve had any prior treatments. The operator establishes the depth, amount of heat and length of time the RF is delivered

by carefully assessing the problem. “It depends on how much perfection you want,” Anderson says. “With fine lines, one treatment will make a difference, but it will be even better with two or three. With folds and skin laxity, one treatment gets you started, but it will take two or three to make more dramatic changes.” She says treatment results are enhanced when they use PRP (platelet-rich plasma) after microneedling. PRP uses your own cells to rejuvenate the skin, and when the channels are opened by needles, it gets in much more effectively. Downtime is about three days with mild swelling, pinkness, and sometimes tiny needle marks, but after that, the skin looks totally normal—only better.

NOTHING SAYS BEAUTY LIKE AN OLD TATTOO from a past relationship. Sometimes the biggest skin blemish is a bad decision made years ago. But there are ways to fix it. The Cutera Enlighten Laser not only removes age and sun spots, it also does a bang-up job taking off tattoos. Heather Faupel is a certified laser technician with St. Louis Vein Specialties and the office of Dr. Norman Bein. They can treat all colors of tattoos or skin spots using the laser’s three different wavelengths. “Tattoo lasers have been around since people have wanted them removed, but some don’t break up ink as well, or can cause scarring,” Faupel says. “We tested a lot before deciding on the Cutera.” With it, she sees significant fading within a week, and anesthestics make it pain-free. While it might take four to six treatments to totally remove an unwanted tattoo, clients can see significant results after one. How long it takes to remove a tattoo depends on its size and the type of ink used. Aqua colors and metallic inks are the hardest; black and red are the easiest. But they all can be removed. Faupel says for large tattoos, they work with one small area at a time. Some people stop treatment when the image is small enough to conceal under clothing. “We want clients to be happy with the outcome,” she says.

BEAUTIFUL SKIN FROM THE INSIDE OUT
A DISCUSSION OF BEAUTY ADVANCES wouldn’t be complete without the latest in supplements, which can be taken internally or used topically. And in this case, new is actually very old, says Afua Bromley of Acupuncture St. Louis & Wellness Center. “There are several preparations I’m using in my practice now, some of which are ancient, that are just getting the research confirmation to back up what many of us have known for years,” she says.

BROMLEY HAS SEVERAL THINGS SHE’S EXCITED ABOUT: 1. ASTRAGALUS (HUANG QI): You can find it at health food stores and on Amazon. The herb comes powdered or in capsules in the U.S. Internally, Bromley says it helps cells and DNA replication, lengthens telomeres (the caps at the end of each DNA strand that protect our chromosomes), and protects against mutations, including cancer. It has no taste and no known risks, and the powder can be added to food. It also can be mixed with skin creams or toners to treat skin issues. “It’s a mild but effective herb,” Bromley says. “In China, they give it post-operatively through an IV to speed recovery and reduce complications. We’re starting to see it in beauty magazines.”
2. FRANKINCENSE (BOSWELLIA): Bromley uses this in her practice, and its anti-inflammatory benefits are getting a lot of publicity. It can be taken as a supplement, and Whole Foods sells twice-daily capsules. It also is used as an essential oil to help treat basal cell skin cancer. As a prevention, particularly if you are prone to skin cancers, she recommends adding one drop to an ounce of facial moisturizer to use daily under sunscreen.
3. GOJI BERRIES: These are known for their antioxidant
qualities. Many women drink goji berry tea, made with five or six cut berries placed in boiling water, after menopause to help skin retain its moisture. You also can put them in the bottom of your water bottle, refill throughout the day and then eat them.
4. BLACK SESAME: Add black
sesame seeds to food or make them into a paste to keep your hair dark. It is known to combat graying or thinning hair and hair loss if eaten on a regular basis. &

LOUFEST MAY BE A FEW MONTHS AWAY, BUT FESTIVAL SEASON HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN. Coachella fashion took a sharp turn this year thanks to the ‘90s nostalgia revival. Here are some of the best trends from the desert that are sure to make their way to the Midwest. Pro tip: Leave the flower crowns at home this year.

THE TALK AROUND TOWN See what our advertisers are saying! »TOWN&STYLE DELIVERS RESULTS.
DOUBLE BUNS It seemed as if every girl (and some guys) were channeling their inner Sporty Spice this year. Swooping up the hair in a half ponytail and dividing it in two buns is a super simple way to make a statement and keep your hair out of your face—especially important for St. Louis summers.
SCRUNCHIES Leave it to Bella Hadid to bring back this ‘90s staple. Wearing nothing more than a short-sleeve crop top, high-waist jeans and a body chain, Bella rocked her white scrunchie at a Levi’s party and made a big statement with just a little fabric. The jury is still out on whether this trend will take off outside festival gates.
BOLD EYESHADOW Applying different eyeshadow hues on the crease, lid, lower lid and under the brow line is so 2017. Picking one bold eye color was the name of the game at Coachella, from Victoria’s Secret Angel Romee Strijd’s orange smokey eye to model Joan Smalls’ thick, electric blue eyeliner. The best part about this trend is that it’s easy to recreate.

RHINESTONE ACCENTS I was reminded of Gwen Stefani circa 1995 with this festival trend. Accenting eyes, foreheads, cheeks and more with rhinestones is this year’s temporary metallic tattoo. Depending on how far you want to take it, you easily can add a tiny rhinestone to each corner of your eyelids or accent your entire brow line (and even in between) with stick-on stones.
KHALEESI BRAIDS Maybe I’m totally biased because Game of Thrones is arguably the greatest TV show of all time, but the Khaleesi-inspired braids at Coachella made my heart skip a beat. While getting the Mother of Dragons ‘do is no easy feat, there are tons of YouTube tutorials that break down how to get the look step-by-step. Trust me, it’s worth it.

32 CLERMONT LANE, LADUE by julia m. johnson LISTING PRICE | $2,200,000 LISTING AGENT | LIZZY DOOLEY AGENCY | LAURA McCARTHY REAL ESTATE IT’S EASY TO ASSUME THAT an 80-year-old house might not have much to offer, but every room in this beautiful home debunks that notion, says agent Lizzy Dooley of Laura McCarthy Real Estate. Carefully planned additions and updates make its spaces just as welcoming and comfortable today as when it was first built.
What is most convenient about the home? Lizzy Dooley | The first-floor master suite features his-and-hers bathrooms and walkin closets, and the side-entry garage is accessible to the rest of the house. You can live entirely on the first floor if you want! Every bedroom has immediate access to a bathroom, which is unusual in Ladue. And the home is in the Clermont neighborhood east of Lindbergh, so it’s close to the highway.
What else makes the home great for entertaining? The first floor is expansive, featuring two family rooms, a formal dining room and a handsome wine room. It has a nice, circular flow with access to the pool and patio from the family room or kitchen. When you’re entertaining, the party can move around easily, both indoors and out. There’s a wonderful sense of continuity to the house.
What other features stand out? The yard is beautiful but not high maintenance, and there’s amazing curb appeal. I like the charming motor court that provides extra parking for guests. The overall feel of the home is warm and welcoming—it’s a very happy house. It can be formal if needed, but it’s also reminiscent of homes in The Hamptons because it makes you feel like you’re on vacation.
How does it integrate modern features with traditional? Homes in this neighborhood are typically older, but this one has upgrades that appeal to today’s buyers, like a five-car garage, gourmet kitchen and lots of entertainment space. There is a big party room with a bar above the garage, which offers plenty of room for game tables like pool and air hockey. It’s a really unique, fun area of the house.
How would you describe the kitchen? It’s extremely bright and inviting with a large center island and beautiful wood floors, and it opens up to the patio through two sets of French doors. You could say the kitchen doubles as a pool house because it’s just steps away. It’s so easy to walk back and forth if you are entertaining outdoors.
What word best describes the home? Definitely ‘timeless.’ It was built in the 1930s but has been added on to and beautifully updated through the years. It’s a fabulous house—one of my favorites.

uilding a house allows homeowners to put their stamp on every little nook and corner. It’s a dream opportunity for many,
including Chris Win and her husband, Patrick, who tailor-made their Clayton home to reflect their interests and lifestyle. The perfect place for their family of six, this modern masterpiece is a shining example of the power of starting from the ground up.
T&S | WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO CLAYTON? CHRIS WIN | Patrick and I met at Wash U. as undergrads, and I used to run in the
neighborhoods around campus, including the one where we ended up. I always thought it was such a tranquil, picturesque place to live. I’m from Colorado, so I wasn’t planning to stay in St. Louis long-term. When it became clear that my husband and I were settling down here, my first thought was about this neighborhood because I have so many fond memories.
T&S | WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BUILD? CW | Patrick isn’t from St. Louis either, and the houses were relatively new
where we both grew up. It took me a long time to get used to the idea of homes built in the 1930s. When we were deciding where to live, we were worried about buying into problems with an older home. My husband felt really strongly that a new build would meet his aesthetic style better and give us a house that wasn’t in need of repairs or updates. It also was important that our home be efficient and green-certified, which it is.
T&S | WHAT DID YOU WANT FROM THE DESIGN? CW | We wanted something modern, really clean and simple. One of the biggest
challenges was finding the right contractors because the design we wanted isn’t usually seen in residential settings. Natural light was also a big priority. Sunlight is important to me! I know I’m not going to get it every day, but I wanted as much as possible coming inside. The third floor has great, triangular windows, and it’s one of my favorite places because of the natural light.
T&S | HOW WAS WORKING WITH AN ARCHITECT? CW | It was great. We had a really good
relationship with our architect, George Johannes. We had never built a home before and were really happy about the level of collaboration. He was easy to work with and communicated very well. It was clear he really wanted to help make our vision happen, and that felt great.
T&S | HOW DOES YOUR INTERIOR STYLE WORK WITH THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE HOUSE? CW | We didn’t have an interior designer,
which I think is uncommon when building a home. Patrick and I have the same aesthetic sensibility, and we knew what we liked. It was easy for us to pair the very modern exterior with a clean, simple, midcentury interior.
T&S | THE SQUIRT SIGN REALLY STANDS OUT. CW | There’s a story behind that sign. It’s
the one thing we kept from the house that was on the lot before we built. It was run-down, but we wanted to salvage as much as we could. We wanted to recycle things, so we sold whatever we could. The Squirt sign was in the basement, and I was blown away when we found it. It’s incredible. We knew when drawing the plans for the new house that there had to be a place for it. It was integral to the design process, and we kept it in storage while our home was being built. It’s a little sentimental, and I think it’s a nice reminder of what used to be here and how we made something new.
T&S | TELL ME ABOUT THE KIDS’ PLAY AREA. CW | I have four kids, so one of the
things I knew I needed was a playroom. I wanted my children to be able to have friends over and enjoy the house. It’s also great that there is a place where my husband and I can play with them. There are two drum sets so my husband can play with our son. That room is all about having a fun, comfortable place to enjoy spending time with each other.
T&S | THE MUSIC STUDIO IS IMPRESSIVE. CW | Patrick is a musician. He doesn’t do
it for a living, but he plays the guitar and drums. Since I’ve known him, he’s always dreamed of having a recording studio. It’s really gratifying to have that dream
realized. We didn’t have the studio when
we first moved in because the kids were still young. It’s been done for about a year. He wanted professional quality, so he brought in people from Nashville to help. It was a long but really cool process. It’s 100-percent soundproof, and it still amazes me that I don’t hear anything. He also uses it with our kids. Music is a big part of our family, so it’s exciting to give them a space where they can have fun and be creative.
I love the third floor. When you’re up there, it’s all about fun ...
T&S | WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ROOM? CW | It’s a toss-up. I love the third floor. When you’re up there, it’s all about fun; there’s no work to do or dishes to wash. It also feels like a treehouse in the summer because of the amazing windows and the trees around the property. But I also love the living room. It doesn’t have a TV, and I’m excited to have a room where people can enjoy just being with each other. It’s probably where I spend most of my time.

HOMEWORK
DEAR HOMEWORK,
Fourteen years ago, you designed our prairie style home, and we have loved living here ever since. Lately, we have been thinking about adding a shade pavilion to the north side of our swimming pool. Do you think adding a structure will ruin the view to our backyard? Sincerely, —TIME FOR AN UPDATE
DEAR TIME FOR AN UPDATE,
I actually think an airy pavilion might make the yard more interesting. If we use materials that echo those of the main house and keep it very open, it could actually improve the view because it helps disguise the required pool fence. I would make it big enough for a couple of furniture arrangements and also add a stone fireplace (which could be a great place to mount a large TV) to increase its usefulness. It’s nice to visit past projects. The landscape has really matured to provide you great privacy. I’m sure a shade pavilion will extend your enjoyment of this already delightful area. Thanks for asking, —HOMEWORK
