Parks make life better! Growing up in Minnesota, I always looked forward to the time each year when the small green shoots of grass would begin poking through the remaining patches of snow—the sure sign that spring had nearly arrived. This meant, of course, that my life started moving from mostly indoors near the fireplace to the out-of-doors. And where were my favorite places to go? Most definitely they were the city parks and neighborhood school fields where my friends and I rode our bikes, played baseball and explored the many creeks and wooded areas. It seems my experience enjoying local parks is not unlike my (now) fellow Californians who, in a recent research study conducted by the California Park and Recreation Society, demonstrated that virtually every California household had visited a park during the last year. Forty-two percent of respondents reported visiting a park several times a week. My estimate of the number of Danville residents who are frequent users of the Town’s parks, trails and community facilities would be—though admittedly unscientific—at least that percentage or higher.

Residency Status Clarification For residents outside the incorporated Town of Danville limits: Those living outside the Danville Town limits include residents of the communities of Alamo and Diablo, and Alamo Creek, Bettencourt Ranch, Blackhawk, Bryan Ranch, Monterosso, Shadow Creek and Whitegate housing developments. The program and facility fees cover a large portion of the actual costs, though Town of Danville residents also partially support the classes, events and facilities through their property tax assessments. Because of this, those program participants and individuals reserving Town facilities who live outside of Danville pay an additional non-resident charge. If you have any questions about this information, call 314-3400.

Art Gallery Events In the Art Gallery... The Light Fantastic: Irish Stained Glass Art January 30–March 28, 2010 The Light Fantastic represents the work of 12 leading contemporary Irish glass artists and highlights the importance of traditional stained, painted, and etched glass in Ireland. Initially on view at the Crafts Council of Ireland, this exhibition is the first to feature secular, free-standing, portable glass panels. Careful observation of each piece reveals how differently each artist has treated the glass. Methods for surface treatments range from painted to barely marked, stippled, enameled, sandblasted, or acid-etched. The works show how important the very nature of each piece of glass is in transmitting the images and concepts each designer suggests. Features such as tiny air bubbles,

streaks, wisps of silver wire, brush strokes, and the modulation of tones and depths can all affect the perception of the inner world conjured before us.

Mount Diablo: Original Works April 10–June 6, 2010 The magnificent landscape of Mount Diablo has inspired artists for generations. Greg Piatt, co-curator of the Summit Gallery at Mount Diablo State Park, curates a wonderful celebration of this local landmark. The show features completely original work, including several pieces created specifically for this exhibit. Through the use of oils, watercolors, photographs, and textiles, these artists pay tribute to the mountain that characterizes our Valley and our community.

Can I request a specific teacher? You can make a request for a specific instructor, but realize that our swim instructors rotate between different pools, class levels and times. Due to the large number of classes we offer, we cannot guarantee we can meet your request, but we will try our best.

The group lesson format includes eight 25-minute classes which are held Monday–Thursday for two weeks. When necessary, students may be asked to move to an earlier or later class time. If a class is full, please add your child to the waitlist in case we are able to accommodate more participants. Swim diapers required. Two locations.

T’ai Chi Retreat The very first Danville Daycation retreat will offer a complete T’ai Chi experience which will focus on healing and reviving your soul. T’ai Chi is rooted in the Taoist philosophy of attuning oneself to the natural order. This slow, flowing exercise emphasizes relaxation and inner tranquility and improves circulation, balance, and helps relax and strengthen the nervous system. Gentle stretching movements help make the body limber, tone muscles and release tension. Join Instructor Bob Kipper, a senior student of Grand Master Tung Kai Ying, in this one day retreat and enjoy the beautiful, peaceful, and serene setting of the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site, the Tao House. Transportation, lunch, light snacks, and a customized tour of the Tao House will be provided. A shuttle will pick you up at and return you to the San Ramon Valley Railroad Museum. Escape your day-to-day routine and reward yourself by registering for a Danville Daycation. Revive and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul at the Eugene O’Neill Tao House, located within the seclusion and serenity of the Las Trampas regional wilderness. Each “Daycation” will be held at the Tao House, designed by Eugene O’Neill’s wife, Carlotta. The design of the house was derived from Taoist philosophy meaning “the right way of life”; it also reflected Carlotta’s interest in Chinese art and Eugene’s interest in Eastern Philosophy.

CERT—Are you part of it? If you have not signed up for an emergency preparedness class, now is the time! The Town of Danville, in partnership with the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District, the City of San Ramon, and the San Ramon Valley Unified School District has been offering the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program since 2006. CERT provides education regarding disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area while training citizens in basic emergency response. You develop skills in areas such as: fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The goal is to train you, your neighbors, school staff and at work on how to care for themselves, their families and co-workers for 5–7 days after a disaster. Since the program’s inception, over 600 people have been trained in the San Ramon Valley. You, too, could be part of this exciting program.

All CERT courses are FREE and are held at the SRV Fire Offices at 1500 Bollinger Canyon Rd, San Ramon. PARTNERS... San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District San Ramon Valley Unified School District The City of San Ramon Citizen Corps The Town of Danville
