HEADING INTO THE NEW YEAR
Jo Loecher
John Mascali
J.P. McDermott
Like many of you, I am looking forward to the start of the New Year. It allows me to reflect back and savor the accomplishments and joys of the past 12 months, but also to look ahead to new challenges and opportunities.

Staying healthy and fit has never been more important, but is often a challenge for many of us. All ages can benefit from eating nutritious foods, regular exercise, and engaging in activities that help you learn something new, further develop a skill or talent and/or provide the chance to do something fun or worthwhile with others.
Recreation Services
A few of my New Year plans include getting back into biking (with my daughter’s company and support), walking through the neighborhood after dinner with my husband, and keeping that early morning date with the treadmill more regularly.

As 2010 approaches, I encourage you to look through this Winter Activity Guide and see if there is a class, special event or excursion that catches your eye. There are plenty of options, especially for exercise and physical activity, that will help both adults and children stay healthy and fit!

VALLEY YOUTH COUNCIL

Not enough for high school students to do in the valley? Have a great idea for an event, but don’t know how to make it happen? Want to speak out on teen issues? Join the Valley Youth Council! The Valley Youth Council (VYC) has been an on-going project of The Town of Danville. Made up of high school students from the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, it is the effort of this group to create good communication between the local high school community and decision makers (Town Council, commissions, Chamber of Commerce, and Town management). In addition to our efforts to communicate the issues and concerns of the local high school students, we strive to create recreational and community service opportunities for that population. During the ’09–10 school year the Town of Danville will host events twice a month for high school students. In addition to the events the VYC will set a goal of completing four volunteer events as a group with local non-profit and community organizations. For more information and to apply, visit the Valley Youth Council page of the Town of Danville website, www.ci.danville.ca.us (search: Valley Youth Council), or call the Danville Community Center, (925) 314-3400.

CERT—Are you part of it? If you have not signed up for an emergency preparedness class, now is the time!
The CERT course is 20 hours and held on six consecutive week nights, or over a weekend.
The Town of Danville, in partnership with the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District, the City of San Ramon, and the San Ramon Valley Unified School District has been offering the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program since 2006. CERT provides education regarding disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area while training citizens in basic emergency response. You develop skills in areas such as: fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The goal is to train you, your neighbors, school staff and at work on how to care for themselves, their families and co-workers for 5–7 days after a disaster. Since the program’s inception, over 600 people have been trained in the San Ramon valley; you too could be part of this exciting program.
The next class session begins in January: Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM–9:30 PM: CERT Class #27 Jan. 21 Introduction to CERT & Emergency Prep Jan. 28 Terrorism and Fire Suppression Feb. 4 Medical Triage Feb. 11 Light Search and Rescue Feb. 18 Psychology and Incident Command System Feb. 25 CERT Class Drill
