TOWN ART GALLERY CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR

A year ago, I announced in this message that the Town would be expanding its cultural arts offerings along with the completion of the Village Theatre lobby renovation and expansion. In retrospect, it’s clear that I underestimated the extent to which this capital improvement project would enhance the Danville arts scene.

With the opening of the Town’s Art Gallery last November with the Charles M. Schulz Peanuts at Bat show, the Village Theatre has become a downtown hub of visual and performing arts activity. With rotating exhibits in the lobby gallery, theatre performances, concerts, workshops, seminars, movies and improv events, the Village Theatre is the place to go for all ages—preschoolers to seniors! It continues this fall, with a wide variety of cultural arts events for you, your family and friends. The Town, along with the California Independent Film Festival Association, will present the 7th annual Danville International Children’s Film Festival. One of just a few such festivals nation-wide, this event showcases local and international films for and by youth. Also this fall, the Eugene O’Neill Foundation has expanded its annual festival and is including a production of O’Neill’s play, The Hairy Ape, in collaboration with the Role Players Ensemble Theatre. In the Village Theatre Art Gallery, the Town is staging a sculpture exhibit, followed by an Expressionist art show, and Once Upon a Book: A Showcase of Children’s Book Illustrators which opens in mid-October. For more information on these and other events, programs and performances, check out the Village Theatre marquee, peruse this Activity Guide or visit the Town of Danville website at our new address: www.danville.ca.gov

The Town of Danville strongly believes in the benefits of participation in organized sports. Participation in athletics plays a valuable role in the development of children. We believe that by offering a program that focuses not on winning, but on sportsmanship, friendship, learning, and—most of all—fun, children will experience the positive side of organized sports and carry that into their everyday recreational experiences. Aspects of teamwork, dedication, discipline, physical fitness, self-esteem, and fair play all contribute to the overall growth and maturation of young people.

The Town of Danville is seeking positive, committed, friendly, energetic and easy to work with volunteers to coach Youth Basketball teams for grades 1–12. Coaches must obtain an initial or renewed NYSCA Certification by attending a training clinic offered by the Town of Danville or online at www.nays.org prior to the first day of practice. All volunteer coaches will be scheduled for fingerprinting by the Danville Police Department. To volunteer, or for more information, contact Program Coordinator Ian Murdock at imurdock@danville.ca.gov or (925) 314-3480.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity last year to coach a 3rd–4th grade girls basketball team. Not only was it a wonderful opportunity as a coach, but it was also extremely special because both of my daughters were on the same team. At the start of the season, the team started off on completely different levels, but towards the end all the girls were playing together as a team. We even had the opportunity to play during a Cal Women’s basketball game during halftime. Playing in front of all those Cal fans helped the girls with their anxiety about games throughout the season.

visual arts classes for adults ENCAUSTIC PAINTING (HOT WAX), BEGINNING Age 18Y and up

Connie English

Encaustic is a beeswax-based paint that was first practiced by the Greeks in the 5th Century. Kept molten on a heated palette, encaustic is applied to a surface and reheated to fuse the paint into a uniform enamel-like finish. It cools immediately so there is no drying time and it can always be reworked. In this one-day workshop you will learn safety, working with heat sources and equipment, paints, medium, collage materials, fusing layers, tools, priming appropriate substrates, scraping, pastel sticks, incising and more. Bring three plain wood substrates to paint on (no larger than 14x14 inch). Wear cotton art clothes, closed-toe shoes, and a bag lunch. $65 materials fee. We started taking the class together five years ago, and I have continued to register for the same class because we take pleasure in each other's company as well as John's instruction. Some of us even play together on Thursday nights because of how much fun we have. The friendships I have formed with these individuals and the instructor are why I keep registering for this class. The Danville Area Senior Hikes (DASH) are held every second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, and are open to adults ages 21 and up. The group will set out from the San Ramon Valley Museum (corner of Prospect and Railroad Avenue) at 9:00 AM and return about 1:00 PM. Most hikes are not strenuous, but gradients are involved due to the local terrain. Distances are usually in the 4- to 5mile range, and the pace is moderate, with stops to view scenery, wildlife and to talk about location history when appropriate. Trailheads are reached via carpools; passengers are asked to make a donation of 10 cents/mile to the driver.
