STAY ACTIVE—STAY HEALTHY—FEEL YOUNG!

Danville is often called a “sports town” since so many youth are active in afterschool sports or traditional league activities such as soccer, basketball, and baseball/softball. But as you can see from the photos on the cover of this Activity Guide, playing sports is not just for kids!

Knowing that physical activity is good for all ages, the Town strives to offer a wide variety of classes and league activities that help promote good health. The senior softball league players are very serious about their sport and are in better condition than many far younger than they. The same can be said for the senior bocce league participants and those older adults who attend exercise classes. I recently spoke to one woman who told me she lost 50 pounds between the Town’s dance fitness class and the daily walk she takes from her home in downtown Danville to Alamo and back! Becoming physically active has energized her—and kept her feeling younger than her years. You’ll notice on page 33 that there is a summary listing of all the various activities offered for seniors including a number that are focused on fitness such as yoga, tennis, hiking, stretching and aerobics. For more detailed information on these programs, pick up the bi-monthly Silver Streak newsletter at the Danville Community Center at 420 Front Street or call (925) 314-3490 to be added to the mailing list. The Town’s sports and fitness programs are continually evaluated, and requests from residents for expanded or new classes and activities are implemented as quickly as possible. If you have suggestions regarding a program you think the Town should offer, contact Ian Murdock, Sports and Fitness Program Coordinator at imurdock@danville.ca.gov or (925) 314-3480.

‘‘

Before I started yoga with Leena I was always so emotionally stressed the night before AP chapter tests that I would be crying and a nervous wreck.

Balance emotions, de-stress, relax and clear your head after school. Boost your immune system and re-energize. Learn easy meditation, visualization and breathing along with yoga postures. Build confidence, flexibility, coordination and a powerful core. Develop all-over strength-even upper body strength. Multi-level Hatha/Classical Ashtanga yoga.

After I started classes, I became much calmer. I recently had a week jam-packed with tests, my school dance show, and the national AP exam. I thought I would be overwhelmed, but I was surprisingly completely relaxed because of yoga.
