Stay Safe This Summer Summer tends to be a favorite season for many people—school’s out, the weather’s great and the beach is beckoning. What could be better? This is also a season we want everyone to be safe. The Town’s aquatics program enables new swimmers to gain basic skills to stay safe while in or near the water, and the more experienced swimmers to develop stronger strokes and greater confidence. Our swim instructors and lifeguards take safety very seriously by constantly monitoring activities in and around the pools, and through participating in water safety skills training every Friday to be ready and able to assist swimmers when needed.

Parks & Leisure Services Arts Commission Commission Rosemarie Hyatt, Chair Stewart Proctor, Chair Jo Loecher, Vice Chair Scott Tinetti, Vice Chair Michael Cory Randall Diamond, Alternate Kevin Donovan Peggy Hiramine Jane Joyce Kent Rezowalli Turner Stanton, Youth Representative

Victoria Brooks Celeste Evans Madeline Gillette, Alternate Tricia Grame J.P. McDermott Tara Power, Youth Representative Susan Ritner

At the Town’s various day camps, we make sure to conduct the high intensity outdoor activities in the morning when it’s cooler, provide for frequent water breaks, schedule water play days during periods of high heat, and rotate activities between outdoors and indoors and between sunny and shady areas. Campers are also encouraged to wear sun screen and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Recreation Services

Danville is a bike-friendly town, so you’ll see more bicyclists in the summer. If you’re the rider, remember to keep your bicycle in good condition, wear a helmet (a good idea no matter what your age), use bike lanes where designated, and follow all the rules of the road. If you’re driving a vehicle, watch your speed and take extra care around bicyclists so everyone can share the road safely.

The 4th of July is a highlight of the summer season with Independence Day celebrations and activities both large and small. Please remember that with the summer-dry brush and vegetation throughout the Danville area, it’s critical to keep careful watch over your barbeques either at home or in Town parks and to refrain from using any type of fireworks, which are prohibited in Contra Costa County.

We’re very proud that Danville was recently named a HeartSafe Community. This designation acknowledges the community’s efforts to prevent and treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest through training residents in CPR and placing AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in area facilities, including the public pools, middle school gymnasiums and community centers where the Town’s recreation programs are held. Finally, I encourage you to consider signing up for a CERT— Community Emergency Response Training—class. Being trained in basic emergency response practices will enable you and your neighbors to care for yourselves for 5–7 days after a disaster, such as a major earthquake, while the Town’s emergency workers address major fire, roadway and other infrastructure safety issues. Check the back cover of this Activity Guide for more information on upcoming CERT classes. Enjoy, and be safe, this summer!

SUMMER CAMPS

My daughter loved all the activities and made some new friends. It was a great activity for her to gain some independence and socialization before kindergarten. The counselors were great—very fun and enthusiastic! I especially liked that they were proactive in dealing with children who were having behavior problems. They spoke to the parents about the issues right away which helped everyone have a positive camp experience.

I liked to swim under water and get the rings.

—Sophia, age 5

“Sophia took all four sessions of beginning swim. It was a wonderful experience for her. Before we started, she had become afraid of putting her head under the water, something the year prior she had no problem doing. After the first session she was able to put her head under without a problem and by the end of summer she was jumping into the pool and swimming short distances to the teachers. We were very pleased with the experience.”

—Laura St. Laurent, mom

I love all the Senior Sneakers field trips. I have made long-lasting friendships and precious memories.

The trips are always fun and full of laughter and good times.

My favorites are the plays in San Francisco, when we all get dressed up, dine at a good restaurant and then take in a show!

classes for all ages PUPPY AND DOG TRAINING CLASSES Age 8Y and up Nobu Endo

Karate (Shorin-Ryu) Age 6–12Y

Let’s have a pawsitively good time. Find the class that best suits the needs of you and your four-legged friend. The objective of the courses are to develop a reliable canine citizen regardless of age. Our methods are based on positive reinforcement techniques. Please bring shot records, treats, 6 ft. leash, and wear comfortable clothing. For safety we recommended that all vaccinations have been received before walking in public places.

Shorin-Ryu uses natural body movements that greatly enhance a beginner’s ability to learn. A variety of selfdefense techniques are taught with emphasis on blocking, punching and kicking. Occasional sparring is practiced. White Gi (uniform) is required and can be purchased from the instructor. This class meets two days a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Puppy Pre-School This course will give you the necessary skills to teach your puppy five fundamental commands necessary to control your dog. Early and proper socialization are critical for your puppy’s future. Your puppy will be socialized with other puppies and people in a safe environment. You will learn positive ways to teach sit, down, wait, come, leave it and loose leash walking. Addressing common puppy problems (mouthing, potty training, digging, etc.) will also be discussed. This course is for canines 3–6 months of age. Location: Danville Community Center, Town Green Fees: $105.00(R) • $126.00(N) Barcode: 23043 Jul 27–Aug 24 W 5:00 pm–6:00 pm Basic Dog Training It’s never too late to start training your dog! Let us dispel the myth that an old dog can’t learn new tricks. This class is geared for adolescent and adult dogs that have never been trained or require a refresher. Your dog will be socialized with other dogs and people in a safe environment. You’ll learn positive ways to teach sit, down, wait, come, leave it and loose leash walking. Addressing common behavioral problems (jumping, digging, etc.) will also be discussed. For dogs 7 months and older. Location: Danville Community Center, Town Green Fees: $105.00(R) • $126.00(N) Barcode: 23045 Jul 27–Aug 24 W 6:15 pm–7:15 pm Intermediate Dog Training The intermediate course is designed to increase the handling skills previously learned in the basic class and strengthen the bond between you and your dog. We will increase durations, distractions and distance with the commands they’ve already learned. This course is for dogs that are 9 months of age and older AND have successfully completed a basic dog training class.
