Expanded Veterans Memorial Building to Host New Senior Programs

Rosemarie Hyatt

Peggy Hiramine Jane Joyce

Jeffrey Jordan, Youth Representative

Renovation and expansion of the Veterans Memorial Building is anticipated to be completed in early 2012. As a unique collaboration between the Town and local veterans groups, the new facility—nearly doubled in size—will house a variety of programs, activities and services for veterans in the historic two-story portion of the building as well as serving as the Town’s central location for senior classes, programs and events in the newly constructed area. The Community Hall in the center of the complex will also be available for rental by residents, organizations and community groups.

Stewart Proctor

Susan Ritner

The Town will continue offering the current complement of programs and services for seniors and, with the larger space, can provide a broader range and greater number of new activities to better meet the needs of Danville seniors. Plans are in the works to offer conversational Spanish and Chinese language classes, yoga and ballet, folk guitar, Black Dragon chess, art classes such as pastel painting, and instruction on how to use social media. If you have ideas about other classes or programs that would be of interest to seniors, contact Jenn Overmoe, Program Coordinator, at 314-3491 or jovermoe@danville.ca.gov. I also encourage you to contact Jenn if you, or someone you know, has a special skill or talent to share as a tutor or instructor. A community event is being planned to celebrate completion of the Veterans Memorial Building, so keep your eye on the Town’s website at www.danville.ca.gov and bi-monthly Silver Streak publication for more details on the Grand Opening festivities. I hope to see you there!

It has been proven that children learn best from hands-on experience when they are making something because of the powerful interaction between thinking and action during construction. This class teaches children about electricity, circuits, simple machines, and physics. Children use Snap Circuit Kits to make learning electronics a ‘snap.’ They work as a team to explore building models, such as am radios, flashlights, doorbells, and much more using parts that are mounted on plastic modules and snap together with ease. No electricity or soldering is ever used. Children have educational fun while learning about electronics. They see immediate results every time they build.
