Each December the Danville Town Council recognizes many of the volunteers who share their time and talents to serve Danville-area residents. The Community Service Award recipients—who are of all ages—have typically “gone above and beyond” in one way or another to serve others. It truly is an honor to acknowledge their contributions at this prestigious community event.

Danville relies on volunteers in many parts of the Town organization. In 2011, over 1,400 families, seniors and youth provided 9,877 hours of service. They worked in the Police, Recreation and Maintenance Departments and throughout other program areas such as Administration, Finance, Planning, and Transportation. The in-kind value of these efforts is an amazing $100,000, which supports the Town’s efforts to cost-effectively provide outstanding service to its residents. You or someone you know may be thinking about getting out and doing something useful, learning something new, or teaching and mentoring others. Whatever your interest, it’s likely the Town has a spot for you. Ongoing volunteer opportunities in the Danville Recreation Services Department include greeting Art Gallery visitors, driving seniors to activities and appointments, working family-oriented special events, coaching youth basketball, or serving on the Valley-wide Youth Council. With the soon-to-open, new Veterans Memorial Building and expanded area for senior programs, the Town is especially looking for those who are interested in staffing the front desk. This would include greeting Senior Center patrons, answering questions about programs and services, registering class participants and providing general office support on a half-day basis, once a week. If becoming a volunteer sounds interesting to you, please check the Town’s website at www.danville.ca.gov under the Council and Government/Employment/Volunteer Opportunities section to submit your Volunteer Profile, or contact the Town’s Volunteer Program at 314-3458 for suggestions on how you can get involved. Whatever your experience and interests, we’re happy to find ways for you to share them with others and to contribute to making Danville such a special place to live and work.

Hop down to the Danville Community Center for a fun-filled morning of egg hunts, arts and crafts, face painting, and more. Hunts are organized by age so every child has equal opportunity to find eight treasure-filled eggs. The time slot you register for is for the egg-hunt only; families are encouraged to come experience all of the other fun activities within the time slot you signed up for. Arts Enrichment in the Library Book Club Series Coming Soon this Spring! Tuesday, April 17, 4:00 pm Children’s Reading Room, Danville Library A spellbinding event that will introduce you to the science and fun of air and pressure and how it affects us. The scientist will make a hot air balloon and a scientific generator will create giant smoke rings that will float above. Children will see an incredible exothermic reaction—which names an experiment that produces heat—take place and will even get the chance to watch a hovercraft in action. Recreational Swim Relax and cool off with your family and friends! Recreational Swim is open to patrons of all ages and takes place in a designated area which includes use of shallow and deep water, the diving board, and lap swim lanes.

Adult Lap Swim (Ages 9+) Swimming is one of the best overall workouts you can do to improve cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength, endurance, posture, and flexibility, all at the same time. Children ages 9 and up must swim laps unassisted by parents.

Family Fun Nights What better way to spend a hot summer evening than cooling off at the Monte Vista Community Pool? Danville’s Family Fun Nights offer something for everyone with pool games, prizes, and music. You can even use rafts and inner tubes exclusively at these events. So grab your friends and family and catch a wave. Friday, 6:30 pm–8:30 pm June 29: Fiesta Friday July 13: Island Fever July 27: Summer Sports Anyone entering the pool area during Recreational Swim, Adult Lap Swim, Family Fun Nights, or special events must pay entrance fees, including swimmers and spectators. Children 8 years and under will be admitted only under the supervision of a paying adult, 18 years of age or older. To swim unaccompanied, children ages 9–12 must pass a swim test. Children who do not pass the swim test must have a parent in the pool with them at all times. No exceptions. Swim Party Packages Enjoy a fabulous birthday party, family get-together, or a “just because” party at Monte Vista Community Pool! Take pleasure in playing pool games, jumping off the diving board, and sun bathing. Why do all the work? We provide the facility, lifeguards, picnic table, and game leader. The pool opens to parties beginning June 23, 2012. Parties are available on Saturdays and Sundays only, during Recreational Swim times. When do I register? Online registration for incorporated Danville residents began Monday, March 12, 8:30 am. Open registration began Monday, March 26, 8:30 am. How do I register? Online: To register online you will need a Login ID and PIN which you may request online at www.danvillerecguide.com, or by calling (925) 314-3400. We encourage you to obtain your Login ID and PIN before the registration date. This will ensure that you receive the lessons you want more quickly.

Register your child for the first class level that describes skills that s/he has not yet mastered. Call 314-3400 for additional assistance. Will classes be held in the rain? Generally, classes will be held during inclement weather. However, the pool will be closed and classes cancelled if there is lightning. What happens if my child passes the class, but I registered him for the same level next session? If there is space available, your child will be transferred to the correct level. Is it possible to make up a class that my child missed due to illness or vacation? Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate class make-ups.

Can I request a specific teacher? You can make a request for a specific instructor, but realize that our swim instructors rotate between different pools, class levels and times. Due to the large number of classes we offer, we cannot guarantee we can meet your request, but we will try our best. I am an adult. Can I take lessons? Yes! We offer private adult swim lessons at various times throughout the day at Monte Vista Community Pool. See page 12.

Aquatots: Parent and Child Aquatics (Age 6 months–3 years)

Aquatots is a class for adult with child ages 6 months to 3 years that emphasizes water adjustment and enjoyment through fun game and songs led by a swim instructor. The group lesson format includes eight 25-minute classes which are held Monday through Thursday for two weeks. When necessary, students may be asked to move to an earlier or later class time. The Town of Danville is pleased to offer a water safety dock. Although we emphasize hanging on to the wall, this dock allows children to stand in the pool with a secure railing around them.

Elementary Aquatics Program (Age 6–12 years)

AQUATICS

The Elementary Aquatics Program consists of six levels and is designed for ages 6–12. The group lesson format includes eight classes which are held Monday through Thursday for two weeks, 25 minutes for levels 1–4, and 40 minutes for levels 5 and 6. In most cases, enrollment is limited to a minimum of three and a maximum of four students per instructor. When necessary, students may be asked to move to an earlier or later class time. Participants who successfully complete the Junior Lifeguard Basics course are eligible to submit an application to be a volunteer Junior Guard. Following a formal interview, teens accepted into the Junior Guard Program must complete designated volunteer requirements as swim lessons aides and in other aquatic programs to be invited to return to the program the following year. Junior Guards may attend and participate in all in-service trainings with part-time staff.

Lifeguard Training Classes Age 15Y and up

Town Staff

This course is designed to teach students the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Upon successful completion of all written exams and water skills, this course certifies participants in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding (valid for 3 years), First Aid (valid for 3 years), and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (valid for 1 year). Come prepared to swim each class session. Full and complete attendance at all sessions is required to receive your certification. Prerequisites: 15 years of age or older by the last day of the course, and pass the required pre-skills test (300 yard continuous swim. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke; surface dive 7–10 feet; retrieve a 10 pound object; return to the surface; swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object; exit the water without using a ladder or steps; complete within 1 minute and 40 seconds). Junior Guard Program

Get a start in the Aquatics profession by learning about lifeguarding. Learn valuable job skills while having fun with your friends. To participate, you must demonstrate swimming skills equivalent to Level 5 (Orca). Course includes instruction in American Red Cross Guard Start (basic lifesaving techniques) and Water Safety Instructor Aide (swim instruction methods and class management) courses. This course runs Monday through Thursday for two weeks.

Adult Beginning Guitar

These acting classes will empower beginning students with the tools needed for the craft of acting. Intense training will allow for specific techniques to be learned based on principles of acting for camera or stage. Each class will be conducted based on the level of talent. Likewise, each student will receive one-on-one attention. Students will work solo and with partners/groups for scenes according to both film or stage assignment. Guest industry professionals will visit the class for lectures and demonstrations. Hiking Club The Danville Area Senior Hikes (DASH) is open to adults ages 55 and up. The group will set out from the Danville Park-n-Ride (next to the 680 Northbound-Sycamore Valley freeway on-ramp) on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 8:45 am and return about 1:00 pm. Most hikes are not strenuous, but gradients are involved due to the local terrain. Distances are usually 4–5 miles, and the pace is moderate. Trailheads are reached via carpools; passengers are asked to make a donation of 10 cents/mile to the driver. Adventure Paddling Age 10–65Y Cal Adventures Get out of town and come down to the Berkeley Marina for the weekend to learn the basics of sea kayaking and stand up paddleboarding. Shorin-Ryu uses natural body movements that greatly enhance a beginner’s ability to learn. A variety of selfdefense techniques are taught with emphasis on blocking, punching and kicking. Cooking with RADD Age 15Y and up This exciting class is designed to teach adults with disabilities how to plan and prepare tasty, healthy meals. CERT: Are you part of it? If you have not signed up for an emergency preparedness class, now is the time! CERT provides education regarding disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area while training citizens in basic emergency response. You develop skills in areas such as: fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The goal is to train you, your neighbors, school staff and co-workers on how to care for themselves, their families and colleagues for 5–7 days after a disaster.

All CERT courses are FREE and are held at the SRV Fire Offices at 1500 Bollinger Canyon Rd, San Ramon.
