Special Events for August There’s plenty of Special Events this August to keep you busy which include: Two Cooking Demonstrations (pre-registration is required for the cooking demos), Senior Clipper Card Registration, Extended Travel for Winter/Spring Destinations, and a Line Dancing Demo. All special events are held Thursdays at the Danville Senior Center, 115 E. Prospect Avenue. For more information or questions regarding these events call (925) 314-3490. For Special Events in September and October, turn to Page 11.

September/October Classes at the Danville Senior Center Visit the Danville Senior Center this fall for many new and recurring classes and programs. New classes include Line Dancing, Bridge lessons, Hawk Watching and Scrabble Play. Learn to speak Chinese, Spanish, play Chess, or travel to local destinations. Stay fit and healthy by attending fitness classes designed for Seniors such as: Aerobics, Stretching, Tai Chi, Yoga, Zumba Gold, with a weekly walking group or the DASH hiking club.

Senior Sneakers Trips ACTIVITY LEVELS Each trip has an Activity Level. Plus, you must be able to walk six steep steps to board the bus. Please let us know if you have any physical limitations prior to signing up for a trip so staff can try to accommodate your needs ahead of time. Choose your level carefully: LEVEL 1: Easy, sitting/little walking. Must be able to stand 10 minutes without assistance or bring your walker or wheelchair. LEVEL 2: Small amount of walking LEVEL 3: Moderate to heavy walking LEVEL 4: Heavy amount of walking/standing LEVEL 5: Strenuous walking/hiking If you aren’t sure where you fit, call us at (925) 314-3490.

Sierra Nevada Railway/Scenic Train Lunch

Mumm Tasting in Napa Valley

Spend a day aboard the Sierra Railroad with a three hour scenic train ride and lunch. The cars are fully enclosed with heating and air conditioning. There is an open air observation car that you can visit any time throughout the journey. Fees: Resident $77; NonResident $92. Price includes transportation, train ride and lunch. Activity Level: 1-2

Wednesday, September 12, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM Join us for a private tour of the legendary French Champagne House of G.H. Mumm. Three types of sparkling wines will be served along the tour. Next, we will head to lunch in St. Helena at Cindy’s Back Street Kitchen, owned by Cindy Pawlcyn a James Beard award winning cookbook author and star of New American Cooking. Bay Model in Marin and Presidio Tour Wednesday, September 19, 8:15 AM-4:00 PM The Bay Model and Bay Model Visitor Center is a research and education facility. Inside is one of the most fascinating scientific tools you will ever see, a working hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta System. After our Bay model tour, we will have 1.5 hours in Sausalito for lunch on your own. After lunch, we will have a narrated hour tour of the Presidio with a Park Ranger aboard the bus. Walking Tour of Nob Hill

Wednesday, October 3, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM Join HobNob Tours on their most popular walk. Learn about the history and scandals of Nob Hill. Stroll rooftop gardens, famous movie and song locations (I Left My Heart in San Francisco) palatial ballrooms, and the majestic Grace Cathedral. You will have time to explore Nob Hill and dine on your own at one of the many restaurants nearby. A visit to the Cable Car Museum will be our last stop before heading home. Tuesday, October 16, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM If you haven’t been to Monterey Bay Aquarium in a while, join us for a self-guided tour to the window of the wonders of the ocean. Perched on the edge of the coastline, located on historic Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is host to the Jellies Experience. A first for any aquarium worldwide. Discover a world where jellies dance and glow, bloom and sting. Lunch on your own either in the two restaurants at the aquarium or nearby. We will have approximately 4 1/2 hours in Monterey. The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht

This hawk identification class will have live raptors are permitted by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Class will cover identification, conservation, and habitats. As the body ages, these attachments tend to shorten, resulting in a predisposition to injury. Stretching is not only an important part of a physical fitness regimen but also of living a healthy life. Emphasis on learning the Spanish used at restaurants, shops and everyday life. Practice though pronunciation and reading short articles in Spanish. The class will view one film a week followed by spirited discussion. Films included might be from a director’s special oeuvre, a sampling of a specific genre, i.e. Film Noir, or a specific actor, i.e. films starring Elizabeth Taylor. This class will take you through a series of gentle stretches and joint movements for increased flexibility and an expanded range of motion. You will also learn breathing techniques to help balance your body, mind and emotions. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat and firm blanket. It is also best to practice yoga on an empty stomach. The Danville Area Senior Hikes (DASH) is open to adults ages 55 and up. Most hikes are not strenuous, but gradients are involved due to the local terrain. Distances are usually 4-5 miles, and the pace is moderate. Trailheads are reached via carpools; passengers are asked to make a donation of 10 cents/ mile to the driver. Hiking dates: 9/11, 9/25, 10/9, 10/23. Meets at 8:45 AM and returns about 1:00 PM. Contact Senior Services at (925) 314-3490 or seniors@danville.ca.gov to join.

All resident registrations received by August 14 at 5:00p.m. will be processed beginning Wednesday, August 15 with no priority given. Non-resident registration will begin on Friday, August 17. Phone and walk-in registration will begin on Monday, August 20. To register by phone, please contact the Danville Senior Center (925)314-3490. Senior Sneaker trips will meet at the Danville Park and Ride lot. Please note times listed for each Senior Sneaker trip are approximate. Staff will mail out a detailed checklist approximately one week before the trip with exact meeting time. Senior Bocce Registration: Due to the popularity of the Senior Bocce program, registration is limited to one class per newsletter. Rank your choice by listing 1 and 2. Senior Sneaker Trip Refund Policy: When registration falls below the minimum enrollment required, it may be necessary to cancel a trip. At the time of cancellation, the Town will initiate a full refund. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for refunds to be processed. Withdrawal and refund requests must be submitted five working days prior to the trip. You may elect to receive a full credit on your account or a refund with a $20 cancellation fee. Refunds will not be given for trips designated . Senior Sneaker Trip Registration Priority: Due to the high demand of the Senior Sneaker program, seniors will be limited to registering for two trips per month, or a total of four per issue of the Silver Streak newsletter. When choosing your trips, please number them in order of priority. In Case of Emergency: Please call Senior Services to verify that your emergency contact information is current. Since prompt medical care is crucial in an emergency, the Town would like to ensure we have the most current information for each participant.
