Working closely with the National Park Service, the O’Neill Foundation provides the educational and community programs that celebrate the life of the “Father of American Drama” at Tao House where playwright O’Neill and his wife Carlotta lived from 1937–1944, and where O’Neill wrote his most important and final plays, including A Long Days Journey in to Night, A Touch of the Poet, The Iceman Cometh and others. At Tao House we celebrate O’Neill’s final works. In 2016, we will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first stage production of an O’Neill play in Provincetown, Massachusetts, when the Provincetown Players presented O’Neill’s Bound East for Cardiff at a modest theatre built at Lewis Wharf in the town’s harbor. O’Neill went on to win four Pulitzer Prizes in Drama, and remains the only winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature ever awarded to an American playwright. The coming year also provides an opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

DON’T DRINK THE WATER by Woody Allen The Town of Danville and Role Players Ensemble Present the 2016–2017 Season Role Players Ensemble is celebrating its 33rd season of presenting high-quality professional theatre in Danville. Over the years, Role Players Ensemble has become known as the San Ramon Valley’s theatre for grown-ups. What better way to honor and embrace this identity than to form the season around the theme “Theatre for Grown-Ups!” Grownups have tremendous life experience and gain an understanding of the nuances, ambiguities, and complications that arise when navigating the complex world in which we live. These themes, so often explored through theatrical storytelling, are a vital part of our shared humanity.

October 28–November 12, 2016 Additional performance on Thursday, November 3 When New Jersey caterer Walter Hollander takes a picture of the wrong thing while visiting cold war Eastern Europe, he and his family find themselves pursued by the state police and seeking sanctuary in the American embassy. Woody Allen brings his signature brand of humor to a motley assortment of characters in this oddball comedy.

THE PIANO LESSON by August Wilson

February 3–19, 2017 The showdown is over the family piano. For Boy Willie, selling the piano could mean a new life. For his sister Berenice, the piano embodies her family’s history under slavery and to sell it would be like erasing the family’s ancestry. The Piano Lesson leads us to ask questions about identity, the value of family, and how our histories shape our choices and our lives. What do you do with your legacy and how do you best put it to use? August Wilson won the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for this stirring, soul-searching drama.

LAUGHING STOCK by Charles Morey

April 14–30, 2017 Artistic Director Gordon Page is looking to save his struggling summer stock theatre by producing Dracula, Hamlet, and Charlie’s Aunt in repertory. Being short of time, talent, and money aren’t obstacles. This is theatre! Mixing slapstick with sweetness, Charles Morey’s Laughing Stock celebrates all the things we love about theatre and everything that can go wrong in the making of it. If you love the magic of live performance you won’t want to miss this.
