Alamo Danville Artists’ Society
The Alamo-Danville Artists’ Society, founded in 1977, is a non-profit organization, providing monetary contribution in support of art programs in the schools of the San Ramon Valley School District. Membership includes artists and patrons who appreciate the visual arts. ADAS regularly hosts distinguished and nationally known guest artists at the monthly meetings, held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (except July and August) at 7:30 pm at the Alamo Women’s Club, 1401 Danville Boulevard, Alamo. Everyone is welcome to attend. Our membership currently consists of 225 professional and non-professional artists of all levels, including non-artists as well. ADAS activities in the community include the Primavera Spring Art Show—an annual juried event, Art in the Park—an outdoor art show, Blackhawk Gallery—a venue where local professional artists can exhibit and sell their works, the Rotating Gallery—rotating exhibits in local shops and restaurants, the ADAS Newsletter—featuring upcoming events and member news. Artists who sell their work at Art in the Park, Primavera, Blackhawk Gallery, Rotating Gallery, and in other art exhibits voluntarily donate a percentage of the sale of their artwork from ADAS sponsored activities to our Art for the Schools fund. Additional funds come from patrons of the arts and community retailer’s support and donations. The money in this fund is used to provide cash grants to our local schools, to be used to supplement their art programs.

The Danville Children’s Musical Theater, produced and directed by Pam Greenan, has been presenting terrific shows to the audiences of the San Ramon Valley for 21 years. This group is the oldest, largest and most professional of the children’s acting ensembles in the San Ramon Valley. Danville Children’s Musical Theater is a California non-profit corporation, dedicated to enriching the lives of young people by providing a vehicle for them to perform in the Musical Theater. Its two-production season is co-sponsored by the Town of Danville. Young people ages 10–16, inclusive, are invited to audition. Casting is by audition only. There is a participation fee.

ABOUT THE DANVILLE COMMUNITY BAND The Danville Community Band met for the first time September 20, 2001 under the baton of Danville resident and founder Dr. Lawrence E. Anderson. The band continues into its second decade of musical performance as one of the premier musical groups in the Tri-Valley area, providing exciting and enriching musical entertainment to Danville and nearby communities. The band today is under the direction of Robert Calonico, director of bands at U.C. Berkeley. Dr. Anderson continues with the band as Director-Emeritus, Artistic Director and a participating musician. The Band’s 80-plus members are dedicated volunteers from Danville and virtually all of the surrounding communities, including from as far as Davis, Modesto, and Vallejo. They represent many diverse professions, students and retirees, and ages range from teens to 70+. The band rehearses Monday nights from 7:00–9:00 pm at Community Presbyterian Church in Danville.

Eugene O’Neill:
close up... and close by Danville was once the home town of Eugene O’Neill, widely regarded as America’s first great playwright. He was the recipient of four Pulitzer Prizes and is the only American playwright to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He wrote his last six plays—including Long Day’s Journey into Night, The Iceman Cometh and A Moon for the Misbegotten—at his Tao House estate in the rolling hills above Danville. A unit of the National Park Service, the house is a National Historic Site. His legacy continues through a series of programs and special events arranged each year by the Danville-based Eugene O’Neill Foundation, in partnership with the National Park Service.

O’Neill’s Danville: 1937–44 The Village Theatre, 233 Front Street September 15, 10:00 am Local historian and former Mayor Beverly Lane will describe “the way we were” when Eugene and Carlotta O’Neill moved to town in 1937. Beverly will provide background on Danville in the thirties, why the O’Neills purchased their property in Las Trampas Hills, and the O’Neills’ relationship with their Danville neighbors.

Tao House… Through Artists’ Eyes: Alamo-Danville Artists Society Exhibit The Village Theatre, 233 Front Street August 24–September 22 Artists from the Bay Area will show works inspired by Tao House and the life of Eugene O’Neill. An artists’ reception will be held at the Gallery on August 25, 12:00–3:00 pm. More information at www.adas4art.org.
A Moon for the Misbegotten by Eugene O’Neill The Old Barn, Tao House September 27–30 Eugene O’Neill’s last play, written in his study at Tao House, will be performed by the Pear Avenue Theatre Company from Mountain View. It is a tribute to his brother Jamie—one of the four “haunted Tyrones”— vibrating with moonlight, love, betrayal—and truth. On Friday and Saturday evenings, enjoy cocktails and pre-show box dinner with gourmet desserts on the Tao House grounds. Presented in collaboration with the National Park Service. Other Events Playwrights’ Theatre— Plays by O’Neill and works by emerging playwrights are performed on Sundays in May at the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site. A “winter season” is presented at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley in January. Student Days—A concentrated learning experience each spring at Tao House for East Bay high school students focused on the theatrical aspects of the visual arts, photography, writing, and drama. O’NEILL STUDIO RETREAT—Under the guidance and direction of professional actors and writers, students gain a deeper knowledge of Eugene O’Neill and then write and dramatize their plays in the Old Barn at Tao House. July 2013 Artist Days—Once in the spring and again in the fall, artists have an opportunity to create at Tao House, bordering Las Trampas open space west of Danville, with a commanding view of the San Ramon Valley and Mt. Diablo. O’NEILL TOURS—The Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site is open year-round, Wed–Sun, with two tours at 10:00 am and 1:30 pm. Closed Mon–Tue, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Reservations are required: call the National Park Service at (925) 838-0249; calling 1–2 weeks in advance is recommended. Same-day reservations are sometimes available. O’NEILL LIBRARY—A treasury of books, photos and related O’Neill materials containing the largest archival collection of its type on the West Coast, located at the National Historic Site. Since 2003, the Town of Danville has offered this after-school program for youth ages 7–14 who aspire to be on stage. The creator, script writer, and instructor, Jeff Seaberg, wanted to produce a program that introduced children to the entire process of play production. Working from original scripts, participants enjoy the complete theatre experience from auditions through rehearsals and technical rehearsals, culminating in a one-weekend run on the stage. The improv troupe, Trapped in a Rumor is back for its 2nd year with the Town of Danville. Their distinctive style of improv creates a live theatre experience that is never the same twice. Shows are fast-paced, funny, high-energy and rated PG-13. Scenes are unrehearsed, unpredictable, and often based on audience suggestions. Through partnership with local charities, Trapped in a Rumor has raised money for the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Child’s Play, Haiti Relief, Nicholas Colby Fund, Relay for Life, and other local organizations.
