Local Spotlight Local Spotlight: VELMA OWENS Velma Owens has been a resident of Danville since 1968. She fondly remembers the days when downtown was only comprised of a few establishments and the entire community had to participate in the 4th of July parade in order to call itself a true parade. While raising her two daughters, Velma worked in several local jobs including bookkeeping and helping with productions at the original Victoria’s Hair on Stage. An avid gardener, Velma took advantage of her green thumb to cultivate and create a beautiful backyard garden. As she became less active, she realized she needed assistance with the larger, more laborious garden upkeep. Luckily for Velma, the Danville Lend-a-Hand Day came to her rescue. The volunteer program, now in its seventh year, gathers

around 100 volunteers to provide local senior citizens with no-cost yard cleanup and minor home repairs. Velma has been participating in Lend-a-Hand Day for the past three years and couldn’t be happier with the assistance. Volunteers have helped her clean gutters, remove an old deck, weed and trim plants and she is very appreciative of all their hard work. With fruiting cherry trees, bright green palms, and vibrant flower beds, it’s easy to see why Velma would want to maintain her backyard escape. And with the added help of Lend-a-Hand Day, Velma’s passion for gardening will stay in full bloom all year round.

Cooking Demonstrations The Town of Danville no longer has a permanent cooking demonstration instructor. We are currently looking for volunteer instructors who have a special talent in cooking and would like to offer a demonstration in the future.
