Senior Sneakers - New Travel Program Beginning September 1, we will be utilizing the services of Kanen Travel along with Senior Center staff on a trial basis for our Senior Sneaker trips. This locally-owned company has 47 years of experience planning and leading trips for senior centers, groups and organizations in the Bay Area. Trip participants will travel on new, high-quality charter buses and travel with experienced trip leaders. Join us in welcoming Kanen Travel on Thursday, July 31 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Danville Senior Center. Day trips for September and October will be highlighted, as well as an extended December trip, Christmas at Hearst Castle (3 days/2 nights). Enter a drawing to win a free day trip, enjoy refreshments, meet a Kanen travel leader and climb aboard a new charter bus to try out your favorite seat. Fees: Free.

Senior Sneakers Trips ACTIVITY LEVELS You must be able to walk six steep steps to board the bus. Please let us know if you have any physical limitations prior to signing up for a trip so staff can try to accommodate your needs ahead of time. All trips depart from Diablo Vista Park. Choose your level carefully: LEVEL 1: Easy, sitting/little walking. Must be able to stand 10 minutes without assistance or bring your walker or wheelchair. LEVEL 2: Small amount of walking LEVEL 3: Moderate to heavy walking LEVEL 4: Heavy amount of walking/standing LEVEL 5: Strenuous walking/hiking

Wednesday, July 16, 3:30 p.m.-11:00 p.m. Summer in the City! Enjoy an evening in North Beach for a pre-show dinner on your own, and then attend the longest-running musical revue in theatre history, Beach Blanket Babylon. The show follows Snow White as she takes a fast-paced journey around the world in search of her “Prince Charming”. Fees: $78(R) $93(NR). Activity Level: 2

Garlic Festival, Gilroy Friday, July 25, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. This celebration of food, fun and family includes great garlicky food, live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, art and crafts and more! The event is held in a park, all outdoors with plenty of natural shade trees and shade tents with tables and benches. Let us do the driving while you enjoy the afternoon. Intimate Impressionism Exhibit (continued...) showcases 70 Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscapes, seascapes, still life, interiors, and portraits from the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. The temporary closure of the National Gallery’s east building for major renovation and expansion has made possible the rare opportunity to see this select group of paintings in San Francisco. Enjoy lunch on your own in the museum café. Fees: $61(R) $73(NR). Activity Level: 3

Museum of the American Indian/ Marin Tour Thursday, August 7, 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. The Museum of the American Indian is devoted to the Native American culture. Situated on an actual site of a Miwok Village, this Museum is the only one of its kind in the Bay Area. Our docent, Alicia Retes, of Cherokee, Yaqui, and Mayo descent, is a talented and experienced certified interpretive guide. After an hour-long tour you will have time to explore on your own. Enjoy lunch at Chalet Basque and then proceed to the beautiful Marin Civic Center for a 90-minutes tour of the last fullycommissioned project of Frank Lloyd Wright. Fees: $80(R) $96(NR). Senior Sneakers Trips / Buzz Sessions Filoli Gardens, Woodside Tuesday, August 12, 10:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Exquisitely beautiful and ever-changing, the Gardens of Filoli offer visitors the chance to learn about the estate’s renowned horticulture practices or to simply enjoy the serenity for which they were designed. Our tour will take us on an exploration of the history of Filoli followed by lunch in the café. Price includes lunch. Fees: $67(R) $80(NR). Activity Level: 4

Red Hawk Casino, Placerville Tuesday, August 19, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Enjoy a day at Red Hawk Casino. For fifty years, Anna Schlemmer has refused to talk about her life in Germany during World War II. Her daughter, Trudy, was only three when she and her mother were liberated by an American soldier and went to live with him in Minnesota. Trudy’s sole evidence of the past is an old photograph: a family portrait showing Anna, Trudy, and a Nazi officer, the Obersturmfuhrer of Buchenwald. Driven by the guilt of her heritage, Trudy, now a professor of German history, begins investigating the past and finally unearths the dramatic and heartbreaking truth of her mother’s life. This course is designed for drivers 50 and older and covers normal physical changes and provides techniques to compensate for these changes. The course fosters defensive driving practices to stay alive on today’s fast-moving highways and includes an auto insurance discount certificate. To receive the discount, you must have completed the full 8-hour course within the last 3 years. Instructor will collect checks made payable to AARP at beginning of class. Stretching is the process of elongating the muscles, tendons and ligaments that connect the muscles and bones of the body. As the body ages, these attachments tend to shorten, resulting in a predisposition to injury. The ukulele is a cinch to learn and fun to play. Open to all levels from beginner to advanced. The Danville Area Senior Hikes (DASH) is open to adults ages 55 and up. Most hikes are not strenuous, but gradients are involved due to the local terrain. Senior Issues Sub-committee Meetings in 2014 Wednesday, July 23, Oct. 22 REGISTRATION INFORMATION Mail or drop off your registration form to the Danville Senior Center or the Danville Community Center. All resident registrations received by June 10 at 5:00p.m. will be processed beginning Wednesday, June 11 with no priority given. Non-resident registration will begin on Friday, June 13. Phone and walk-in registration will begin on Monday, June 16. To register by phone, please contact the Danville Senior Center (925)314-3490. Please note times listed for each Senior Sneaker trip are approximate. Staff will mail out a detailed checklist approximately one week before the trip with exact meeting time. Class Cancellation/Withdrawals Requests for withdrawal will be honored if requested no later than 5 business days prior to the first day of class. Requests made less than 5 business days prior to the first day of class must be submitted in writing and will be considered on an individual basis. A $20 processing fee will be charged for check refunds; a $5 processing fee for credit card refunds. Make-up Classes Whenever possible, make-up classes will be given on those occasions when inclement weather or instructor illness requires that a class be cancelled. No refunds (whole or partial) can be given for classes missed by the student.

Senior Sneaker Trip Refund Policy: When registration falls below the minimum enrollment required, it may be necessary to cancel a trip. At the time of cancellation, the Town will initiate a full refund. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for refunds to be processed. Withdrawal and refund requests must be submitted five working days prior to the trip. Refunds will not be given for trips designated (no refund). Senior Sneaker Trip Registration Priority: Due to the high demand of the Senior Sneaker program, seniors will be limited to registering for two trips per month, or a total of four per issue of the Silver Streak newsletter. When choosing your trips, please number them in order of priority. In Case of Emergency: Please call Senior Services to verify that your emergency contact information is current. Since prompt medical care is crucial in an emergency, the Town would like to ensure we have the most current information for each participant.
