id you know that staying socially active can help seniors maintain both good physical and emotional health? In fact, being socially active can be just as effective as exercise for improving your mood and enhancing the overall quality of life.

D

Social connections offer great benefits to your cognitive functioning as well, leading to a sharper mind as you age. Various studies have been conducted that show how those seniors who are socially active are less susceptible to illness as well as other significant health benefits. Our new Friday Social is being offered as an opportunity for time spent with friends, getting to know other members of the community, relaxing by playing games or just friendly, interesting conversations. It’s never too late to make new friends, or spend quality time with the ones we have! a

Do you have an idea for a new activity or an improved procedure for Senior Services? Attend the scheduled meetings to be heard by the decision makers. Next meeting: July, Wed. 27 Time: 4:00 p.m.

MAY BOOK SELECTION

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry By Gabrielle Zevin A. J. Fikry, the owner of Island Books, has recently endured some tough years: his wife has died, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and his prized possession--a rare edition of Poe poems--has been stolen. Over time, he has given up on people, and even the books in his store, instead of offering solace, are yet another reminder of a world that is changing too rapidly, until a most unexpected occurrence gives him the chance to make his life over and see things anew. This enchanting novel is a love letter to the world of books--an irresistible affirmation of why we read, and why we love. (May 10)

Danville Senior Services (925) 314-3430

By Michael Ondaatje The novel centers on a single father and his children: Anna, his natural daughter; Claire, who was adopted as a baby when Anna was born; and Cooper, who was taken in “to stay and work on the farm” at the age of four when orphaned. The family lives on a farm in Northern California where Anna and Claire are treated almost as twins, while Cooper is treated more as a “hired hand”. After Anna begins an intimate relationship with Coop, an incident of violence tears the family apart. The book then details each of the characters’ separate journeys through life post-incident and how they are all interconnected. (June 14)
