Dialogue with Islam: Complexities of Respect Tuesday, Nov. 20, 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Location: Danville Senior Center, Community Hall Presenter: William Garrett, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy & Religion, JFKU
On Feb. 22, 2012, American military personnel at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan burned copies of the Qur’an. The incident shocked the Islamic world and brought dismay to many in the West as yet another example of our cultural illiteracy. Correcting our course will not be easy because showing respect for Islam can put us in conflict with western ideals of justice and human dignity. How, for example do we deal with culturally- sanctioned subjugation of women or refusal of separation of church and state? Dr. Garrett will take up this knotty problem to see if there is a way to show appropriate cultural respect without slipping into hypocrisy. Fees: $5(R) $6(NR).
