Street Smarts 2011-12 School Year Calendar and Guide to Programs

Page 1

Mission Statement - The mission of Street Smarts is to change pedestrian, bicyclist and driver behavior. Celebrating Street Smarts’ Successes Since 2004, the San Ramon Valley Street Smarts Program has delivered successful programs and public awareness campaigns about important traffic safety topics to thousands of children, youth and adults in Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, San Ramon and the surrounding communities. Street Smarts’ flagship program, the annual Street Smarts Storybook Poster Contest completed its seventh year with the unveiling of “The Great Zoo Escape,” a traffic safety-themed storybook written by local author Dana Mentink and illustrated by San Ramon Valley students.

The program’s successes continued with the Street Smarts “Be Reel!” Video Contest which garnered record participation and strong attendance at the Video Contest Premiere in May 2011 at the Village Theatre in historic downtown Danville. As part of a $290,000 federal Safe Routes to School grant, Street Smarts continued its successful 30-minute traffic safety assemblies featuring Sam the Safety Car, an animated red car that helps keep Street Smarts’ presentations fun and exciting. Other federally funded programs included after-school bike rodeos, totaling over 2,500 participants. We are pleased to present this 2011-12 School Year Calendar and Guide to Programs to you. You will find all major dates for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, special events supported by the Town of Danville, City of San Ramon and Alamo Parks and Recreation, and highlights about Street Smarts efforts during the past school year on each page. Each months either a Street Smarts program or a traffic safety theme, such as bicycling safety is featured. Street Smarts would not be possible without it’s local public agency partners, corporate partners and the federal Safe Routes to School grant. The Town of Danville, City of San Ramon, County of Contra Costa, San Ramon Valley Unified School District and San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs, AT&T, Sunset Development Company and State Farm Insurance are key partners in this effort. We hope you continue to be safe on the roads. Stay Street Smart, Street Smarts Program Advisory Committee

School Bus Safety - Students in the San Ramon Valley head back to school this month. It’s especially important for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to be increasingly vigilant and travel slowly around school sites. For drivers, that also means keeping a safe distance from school buses and stopping when the school bus lights are flashing. Above, students are buckled up on board the TRAFFIX school bus (Photo by Kyle Mix). Below, students in Danville are waiting at the sidewalk for the bus at their designated stop. ”It Happens” teen Driving Safety Campaign - “It Happens” is an interactive campaign created by Street Smarts that engages teens to learn about driving safety from personal experiences on the road as a driver or passenger. Launched each October, students share their real world stories on camera which are then broadcasted on campus and on the online at ithappens2u.com. Teens earn prizes for submitting stories, watching videos, taking driving safety quizzes and taking surveys. Above, a California High School Student shares her story on camera. SUNDAY

Bicycling Safety - Our neighborhoods and easy access to the Iron Horse Regional Trail make the San Ramon Valley a great place to ride a bicycle. Street Smarts reminds children and adults to practice safe bicycling including wearing a helmet, riding single file and with the flow of traffic, walking bicycles across the crosswalk, wearing reflective gear and not wearing headphones while riding. Above, bicycles are parked at Rancho Romero Elementary School in Alamo on Bike to School Day. Below, a bicyclist rides his bike in downtown Danville. SUNDAY

walk/Bike Challenge - As part of the federal Safe Routes to School funding, Street Smarts promotes the benefits of walking and bicycling to school through the Walk/Bike Challenge program. In the online-based program targeted to specific schools, parents learn about the environmental, health, social and financial benefits of walking, bicycling and rolling to school. Parents track their students trips to school using the web site www.walkbikechallenge.com and earn prizes for students and their parents to walk or bike to school.
