INTroduction Recognized as a historic site by the Heritage Resource Commission, the Village Theatre now serves as a performing arts theatre with a fine arts gallery located in the lobby area. Since the Town of Danville purchased the Village Theatre in 1987, it has opened its curtains to a variety of book lectures, concerts, film festivals, meetings, movie screenings, musicals, performances for youth and adults, plays and special events. It has since been the epitome of what a community theatre means to the group of individuals it serves. For the first time last year the Town of Danville provided a 9-month series of Pre-School Performances throughout the school year. Once a month, the stage embraced performers which ranged from clowns to magicians, that filled the theatre with giggles and happy dancing feet. The Pre-School Performance Series will kick off again for its second straight year in September.

2

Also in their second consecutive year, Trapped in a Rumor, an improv comedy troupe, will use its quick wit to captivate audiences once each month. In May of 2011, Trapped in a Rumor embraced Funniest Mommie Maryellen Hooper, whose humor on marriage, motherhood and life brought a fresh new chuckle to improv in the Village Theatre. The Danville International Children’s Film Festival, for children and by children, is back again this fall. New and exciting young actors and actresses will share their new upcoming film releases, answer questions and sign autographs. Film screenings, discussions with filmmakers and workshops will fill the event schedule. Stay tuned for more information. The Town of Danville invites you to step inside and experience real, live community theatre.

Since 2003, the Town of Danville began to offer an after-school program for youth ages 7-14 who aspired to be on stage. The Theatre Performance Workshops creator, script writer, and instructor, Jeff Seaberg, wanted to produce a program based on the idea that children ought to be introduced to the entire process of play production. Working from original scripts, the young participants in the program enjoy the complete theatre experience from auditions through rehearsals and technical rehearsals, culminating in a oneweekend run on the stage. Do you have a child who wants to be on stage? For more information about this program, or to register your child, visit www.danville. ca.gov or call (925) 314-3400.

The improv troupe, Trapped in a Rumor is back for its second year with the Town of Danville. Last year they entertained audiences with their distinctive style of improv. The shows are fast-paced, funny, high-energy and rated PG-13. The scenes one sees are unrehearsed, unpredictable, unprepared and frequently based on audience suggestions. These clever performers work together to create a live theatre experience that is never the same twice. Even though this group is fairly new to the East Bay Improv community, Trapped in a Rumor is making a statement by partnering with local charities and raising money. Thus far, Trapped in a Rumor has raised money for the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Child’s Play, Haiti Relief, Nicholas Colby Fund, Relay for Life, and several other local organizations.

ROLE PLAYERS ENSEMBLE THEATRE www.danvilletheatre.com Role Players Ensemble celebrates its 28th year by committing itself to becoming a center of cultural activity in the San Ramon Valley. This season, Artistic Director Eric Fraisher Hayes, has chosen an ambitious season featuring an epic Eugene O’Neill play and expanding into the realm of the musical. In between, there will be some brilliant comic wit and a heart-stopping murder mystery. Questions or inquiries? Call (925) 820-1278 or mail@danvilletheatre.com

Mourning Becomes Electra

In partnership with the Eugene O’Neill Foundation

SEPTEMBER 16 – October 1, 2011 Thurs, Fri, Sat 7:30pm; SunDay 2pm Eugene O’Neill turned to Greek theatre for inspiration when he wrote this epic drama set in New England at the time of the Civil War. Like the Oresteia of Aeschylus, Mourning Becomes Electra is a trilogy (Homecoming, The Hunted, and The Haunted), exploring the psychological forces that shape the lives of its characters. It also reveals O’Neill’s indebtedness to the writings of Sigmund Freud. This play is in collaboration with the Eugene O’Neill Foundation in celebration of the 12th annual Eugene O’Neill Festival.

12

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead By Tom Stoppard

OCTOBER 28 – NOVEMBER 19, 2011 Fri, Sat 8pm, Sunday 2pm “Life is what you do while you wait for something to happen” would be an apt description of Tom Stoppard’s first full-length play. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, incidental characters in Shakespeare’s great tragedy, Hamlet, are thrust into the forefront of this telling of Hamlet to wonderfully absurd comic effect. Their fates seem to be handed to them bit by bit, as if it were all scripted, and they are left to muse and rail at the absurd twists and turns that await them. Winner of the 1968 Tony Award for the Best Play.

Laura

By Vera Caspary and George Sklar

JANUARY 13 – FEBRUARY 4, 2012 Fri, Sat 8pm, Sunday 2pm Laura Hunt is dead. All that remains of her is the mesmerizing portrait hung on the wall of her Upper East Side apartment and the endless string of men who were obsessed with her. Murder mystery and love story collide as Detective Mark McPherson’s quest for clues leads him from occupation to pre-occupation. His dance with her ghost blurs the lines of reality and dream. The closer he gets to the truth, the greater the danger. Written first as a novel by Vera Caspary, the play was made into a film noir classic, directed by Otto Preminger, in 1944.

The Mikado

APRIL 13 – MAY 5, 2012 Fri, Sat 8pm, Sunday 2pm The Mikado, a highly moral sovereign, has issued a decree condemning to death anybody found guilty of flirtation, unless married. The problem is that everyone from the monarch on down is guilty, even the Lord High Executioner himself. Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, was first produced by the D’Oyly Carte Co., and opened in March 1885 in London. Its popularity continues today, and is arguably the most popular opera ever.
