In case you need to evacuate your home, have the following items stored in an easily accessible bag or container. Whatever you do, don't wait for a disaster to happen! Here are some things that should be in your kit.  Water – two litres of water per person per day (Include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order).  Food – that won't spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (remember to replace the food and water once a year).  Manual can opener.  Hand sanitizer.  Flashlight and batteries.  Battery–powered or wind–up radio (and extra batteries).  First aid kit.  Special needs items – prescription medications, infant formula, diapers, inhalers for asthma, Epi-pen, or equipment for people with disabilities.  Extra keys – for your car and house.  Cash – include smaller bills, such as $10 bills (travelers cheques are also useful) and change for payphones (cell phones may not work during an emergency).  Emergency plan – include a copy of it and ensure it contains in–town and out–of–town contact information.

When to call 9-1-1 (where available)  Report a fire.  Report a crime.  Save a life.

For non-emergency calls, use the seven- or ten-digit numbers listed in your local phone book for police, fire and paramedic services.

In case of a major emergency     

Follow your emergency plan.

Get your emergency kit.

Make sure you are safe before assisting others.

Listen to the radio or television for information from local officials and follow their instructions.

Stay put until all is safe or until you are ordered to evacuate.

Shelter-in-place You may be instructed to "shelter-in-place" if chemical, biological or radiological contaminants are released into the environment. This means you must remain inside your home or office and protect yourself there. The following steps will help maximize your protection:  Close and lock all windows and exterior doors.

   

 

Turn off all fans, heating and air-conditioning systems to avoid drawing in air from the outside.

Close the fireplace damper.

Get your emergency kit and make sure the radio is working.

Go to an interior room that's above ground level (if possible, one without windows). In the case of a chemical threat, an above-ground location is preferable because some chemicals are heavier than air and may seep into basements even if the windows are closed.

Use duct or other wide tape and seal all cracks around the door and any vents into the room.

Continue to monitor your radio, television, or internet enabled device (cell phone or computer) until you are told all is safe or are advised to evacuate.

Evacuation orders Authorities will not ask you to leave your home unless they have reason to believe you are in danger.

If you are ordered to evacuate, take:  your emergency kit;  your emergency plan;  essential medications and copies of prescriptions;  a cellular phone (if you have one);  your pets.

Pets are not allowed in some emergency shelters, so plan in advance for a pet-friendly location.

Protect your home:   

Shut off water and electricity if officials tell you to.

Leave natural gas service on, unless officials tell you to turn it off. (If you turn off the gas, the gas company has to reconnect it. In a major emergency, it could take weeks for a professional to respond. You would be without gas for heating and cooking).

Leave your home UNLOCKED as the R.C.M.P. are required to enter each home to ensure all persons have been evacuated, after searching your home the R.C.M.P. will lock your house, if possible.

If you have time:  

Call or e-mail your out-of-town contact. Tell them where you are going and when you expect to arrive. (Once you are safe, let them know. Tell them if any family members have become separated.)

Leave a note telling others when you left and where you are going.

FIRST STEPS PROGRAM 7701 99th Street Peace River  780-624-3650 First Steps is an early intervention class for 3-6 year olds with mild to severe delays in speech or motor skills (muscle control and coordination). We have a small student to teacher ratio. It is taught by a certified teacher with support from educational assistants. We base our class activities on learning through play, music and movement. We also have six Family Oriented Sessions throughout the year where parents come to the school with their children for short sessions. These days are designed to provide information for parents about the goals we are focussing on at school and to suggest examples of activities that can be done at home to help the children reach their individual goals.
