This fabulous facility was built and opened to the public in June 1989.

The Peace Regional Pool has many aJrac ons that cater to our wide range of visitors, from a water slide for our more adventurous user to a steam room and hot tub for those that like to take it easy.

Supervision of Children Children under 8 years of age, must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or a responsible person minimum of 14 years of age; parent/guardian or responsible person MUST be in the pool and be within arms reach from their child at ALL TIMES. Peace Regional Pool

In addi on to it’s physical features, the pool is open throughout the year and hosts a full range of programming op ons, from Aqua Aerobics to Senior/Adult classes. Other programs include lessons for all ages, 6 months to 99+ as well as Lifeguarding and Instruc ng Courses, so that you can start your Aqua c Career at the Peace Regional Pool.

POOL RULES AND GUIDELINES GUIDELINES Parent and Tot This me is designated for adults to bring their young children for calm play me.

Family Swim Come swimming and meet other families during our Family Swim mes. An adult must accompany all children (0-17 years) into the water, no excep ons.

The Peace Regional Pool

Public Swim Everyone is welcome! Children 8 years and older can swim without parental supervision. Children 7 years of age or younger must be accompanied by a responsible person 14 years and older, within arms reach at all mes.

Family/Lane Swim During these mes there is one lane available for lane swimming.

Parent to Child Ratio Children under age 8 requires 1 adult to every 4 children (within arms reach at all Fmes). Children over the age of 8 requires 1 adult for every 10 children (Family and Private Rentals only). ADULTS MUST BE IN THE WATER AT ALL TIMES.

Bather Safety Guidelines • No street shoes may be worn in wet traffic areas • Children less than 8 years old must be ac vely supervised and within arms reach of a responsible person fourteen years of age or older at all mes • Patrons are required to take a cleansing shower before entering the pool • Proper swim aHre must be worn at all mes (no cut off jeans, white t-shirts, etc) • Young children, 35 months and under, and anyone who is incon nent must wear protec ve, water-resistant swimwear in order to minimize the introduc on of contamina on • No pets are allowed onto the premises, except for seeing eye dogs or other animals used to assist persons with disabili es • Diving in the shallow end is not permiJed • Roughhousing or puHng other swimmers at risk is not permiJed • SpiHng, spou ng or otherwise pollu ng the water is prohibited • No glass containers are permiJed on the pool deck • Foul language and disrespecSul behavior are not permiJed and are grounds for expulsion from the pool • Any person with diarrhea or a history of diarrhea over the previous two weeks must not use the facility • No chewing gum in change rooms, on the deck, or in the water • Intoxicated persons are not allowed inside the facility • Food must be consumed in a designated area only

Refund Policy All requests for refunds must be given to pool management 2 weeks before the first class of the registered program. Requests can be verbal, wriJen or in the form of a doctor’s note. Refunds will be given in the form of pool credit or cheque. Allow 2-3 weeks for reimbursement.

February 2, 2015-April 26, 2015 Challenge yourself by swimming a portion of the Alexander Mackenzie Historical Route in the comfort of the Peace Regional Pool and then have your progress charted on our map.

40 lengths in the pool = 25 kilometers of the distance traveled by Sir Alexander Mackenzie. T-Shirts and prizes to be awarded for participation.

Placement in Red Cross Swim Programs depends on many variables including age, skill, proficiency, previous experience and readiness.

1

6 years old

This is an entry level for children ready to move in shallow water. This level provides an orienta on to the water and the pool area, and introduces floats and glides with kicks. Children build their endurance by improving distance.

Completed Level 1

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface while doing front, back and side glides. Swimmers work on front swim, and learn about deep water ac vi es and the proper use of Personal Floa ng Device (PFD). They will also perform a 10 meter swim.

Completed Level 2

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back.

Swimmers receive an orienta on to water and pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5 meter front swim. Swimmers will also learn the siHng dive and will be able to swim 15 meters con nuously.

Completed Level 3

Swimmers learn back swim and front crawl (10m), work on fluJer kick on back, perform kneeling dives, will be introduced to sculling and will be able to swim 25 meters con nuously.

Completed Level 4

Swimmers develop front crawl (15m), learn back crawl (15m) and whip kick on back, learn stride dive and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back, and swim 50 meters con nuously.

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (25m), learn elementary back stroke and the dolphin kick.

They will also swim 75 meters con nuously.

Completed Level 6

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m). They learn front scull and stride entry. Perform whip kick on front and the dolphin kick. They also swim 150 meters con nuously.

Completed Level 7

Front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke will be refined. They will also learn breast stroke, eggbeater/tread water, feet-first surface dive and standing shallow dive. They will also swim 300 meters con nuously.

Completed Level 8

Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke con nue to be refined. Swimmers will also learn the side stroke kick and head-first surface dive and to swim 400 meters con nuously.

Further refinement of strokes. They learn side stroke, dolphin kick (ver cal), and feet-and head-first surface dives with underwater swim. They will also be able to swim 500 meters con nuously.

LEADERSHIP COURSES

National Lifeguard (NL) The NL Program develops the basic lifeguarding skills, principles and decision making process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aqua c facili es and emergencies.

Prerequisite: SFA (Standard First Aid)/CPR, Bronze Cross and must be over 16 years of age.

Jr. Lifeguard Club Jr. Lifeguard Club is designed to let children experience the skill of lifeguarding. Ac vi es include: fitness drills, water proficiency, first aid, recogni on and rescue, stroke improvement, entries and kicks, all while having lots of fun! Tuesdays and Thursdays Prerequisite: Level 5 and must be between 10 -15 years old Oct. 2-28 or Jan 6-29 4:15-5:45

Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR Level C

Cost: $75.00 + gst if over 12

A comprehensive two-day course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscita on (CPR) skills for those who need training due to work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. Includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines. Meets federal and a variety of provincial/ territorial regula ons for Standard First Aid and CPR. Exceeds compe tors’ standards by including injury preven on content, CPR and AED.

Bronze Medallion This course teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles from the four components of water rescue educa on: judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries, defence and release methods in prepara on for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious vic ms of various types.

Prerequisite: Must be 13 years old or older

Bronze Cross This course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduc on to safe supervision in aqua c facili es. This course is the prerequisite for all advanced training programs including Na onal Lifeguard and Instructor cer fica on.

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor This course teaches those who would like to teach swimming to others the techniques to be able to teach lessons. This course focuses on teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communica on, safety supervision and feedback.

Prerequisite: Must be 15 years old or older Oct. 4, 5, 18 & 19 (4 day course)

Cost: $245.00 + gst

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) This course focuses on the planning and teaching of Red Cross Swim Lessons, instruc onal emergency response skills and teaching techniques specific to our programs. The cer fica on issued allows candidates to teach all the Red Cross Swim Programs.

ADULT CLASSES Scared Stiff This course is designed to develop a swimmer’s confidence in the water through basic floata on, movement, and breathing skills and foster the basic knowledge, skills and aHtudes needed to stay safe, in and around the water.

Basic 1 Red Cross Swim Basics 1 offers an introduc on to swimming with a focus on front swim.

Basic 2 Red Cross Swim Basic 2 focuses on developing front and back crawl, establishing comfort in deep water, and increasing the swimming distance.

Strokes Red Cross Swim Strokes is a stand-alone stroke development program for adults and teens, and for par cipants in Red Cross Swim Kids who require addi onal work on a stroke. The program is developed to further develop strokes chosen by the swimmer in consulta on with the Water Safety Instructor, and increase swimming distances and proficiency.

*Red Cross lessons are designed for swimmers who are Scared S ff, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced.

Private Lessons Private lessons are available for $26.00 per hour. They are intended to assist with stroke improvement, one-on-one instruc on, help with comfort level if you are “scared s ff”, etc.

WINTER ICE RENTALS (DEPENDING ON AVAILABILITY)

The Baytex Energy Centre is the home of Peace River Minor Hockey, Peace River Ska ng Club, North Peace Navigators Jr. B, Peace River Speed Ska ng Associa on, as well as Recrea onal Hockey and Old- mers Hockey Leagues. Our local schools also use this facility for ska ng ac vi es for their students.

The Baytex Energy Centre is a single ice surface 85’ X 200’ facility, and the ice season runs from August to the end of March. Since it’s opening in the fall of 1978, this arena has been the host facility to many local events and ac vi es year round. The Baytex Energy Centre has sea ng for 1700 persons in heated comfort, with a fantas c view of the ice from every seat. It also features a separate viewing area for those who prefer to keep warm while watching.

Ameni es include concession area, second level lobby mee ng area with view over the ice surface, press area, and nine dressing rooms. The upstairs lobby area is available for rent and is a great area for hos ng birthday par es, workshops or exercise classes.

Non Prime Time Hours (Midnight to 3:30 pm, Monday-Friday) Rates are different for weekend bookings. Please call for more informaFon. • It is strongly recommended that all skaters wear CSA Approved helmets while on the ice.

• Skates only. Boots and shoes are not allowed on the ice.

• To avoid collisions, skaters should travel the same direc on on the ice. Slower skaters should stay to the centre of the ice surface.

• Carrying your children while on the ice surface is not permiJed. • No balls, pucks, chairs, pylons, s cks or any other item which might cause a safety hazard for other skaters are permiJed on the ice.

• Wheelchairs or similar apparatus are allowed on the ice providing that they are under the control of a competent skater.

• No food or beverages are permiJed on the ice surface.

PLANS FOR THE NEW ARENA ARENA Over the past two years, the Town of Peace River, through community consulta ons and aZer gathering community feedback, has started the process towards the building of a new arena. Exhibits Main Gallery A Sense of the Land and It’s People: A Private Collec on This is a collec on of West Coast and Plains First Na ons ar facts and is on loan from local physician Dr. David Welch. These personal objects demonstrate how the land and its resources informed and influenced the tools and ar s c expressions of the Western Na ons. The exhibit runs un l November 2014.

Childhood histories in Peace River An exhibit exploring the toys, games, clothing, ac vi es and histories of children in Peace River. This exhibit will run from December 2014 to April 2015.

Peace River Gallery For 2014, this gallery will feature a series of rota ng exhibits celebra ng the 100th anniversaries of Peace River Crossing, the beginning of World War I, the Peace River Record GazeJe, Valley Printers and the Peace River Fireman’s Associa on. The Museum invites the community to share their stories and photographs with us to develop a greater understanding about these historical events.

Regular Schedule: Monday-Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm OPEN ON STAT HOLIDAYS except Dec 25, 26 and Jan 1st.

The Peace River Museum, Archives and Mackenzie Centre (PRMA), as a Town owned and operated facility, is dedicated to preserving and interpre ng the lives and events of the people in our community’s past and present. With a vast collec on of locally donated ar facts, photographs, maps and diaries, staff curate new exhibits, address research requests and deliver relevant programming throughout the year.

Three galleries, with rota ng exhibits, are featured inside the building, with a replica NWMP Cabin and the wheel shaZ of the paddleboat, the S.S. D.A. Thomas, exhibited on the grounds. The significance of the land on which the Museum sits, alongside the river, is noted in signage of the story of Felix Akenum Shaw, the original Mé s landowner.

Embodied in these historic objects and exhibits are the stories of our community’s experiences, our history, our culture and our tradi ons.

Fur Trade Gallery The impact of the fur trade history along the Peace River is told through this permanent hands-on gallery of furs, traps, canoes and HBC blankets, along with deZly sewn First Na ons ar facts from the region.

Canadian explorers such as Alexander Mackenzie and David Thompson paddled this river, made Fort Fork a base for their discoveries and diarized their me spent here. The fort façade of our building offers a strong visual depic on of this historic era.

Art Wall Ar sts help document and record who we were, what we thought and how we see our world today. In partnership with the Peace of Art ar sts, monthly solo art exhibits are featured at the Museum. Viewing these works of art each month is free.

Boards and Committees With the advisory support of our Museum Board, Heritage Places CommiJee and the Sir Alexander Mackenzie Historical Society, we remain commiJed and enthusias c about the stories, people, events and objects of Peace River’s heritage.

Northern Alberta Railway Station (NAR) This Provincial Historic Site was built in 1916.

While owned by the Town of Peace River, it hosts the offices of the Peace River and District Chamber of Commerce. This facility serves as the Visitor Informa on Centre for tourists and new residents alike. Three rooms display 1920s-30s Museum ar facts from the days of rail transporta on in and out of the Peace.

Upcoming Events and Exhibits October 5 - 11, 2014, Archives Week: Archives Week is promoted across Alberta to create awareness and understanding of the value of preserving community and family archives. This year’s theme is Creepy Alberta!, exploring the weird, ominous and ghoulish archival holdings across the province. Check the Museum’s blog for updates on our events for this strange week.

Cultural Access Pass (CAP) The Museum is a member of CAP, which giZs Canadian ci zens, during their first year of ci zenship, complementary admission to more than 1000 of Canada’s cultural venues—museums, galleries and parks. Visit www.icc-icc.ca to find out more about this federal ini a ve.

November 2014, Remembrance Day Exhibit: The Peace River Gallery will feature, from our collec on, an exhibit of uniforms from Peace River Veterans. A commemora on of the beginning of World War I is on exhibit un l December 2014.

MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES School Programming Teachers Guide The exhibits at the PRMA speak to many curriculum outcomes and a guide indica ng how the PRMA can support the classroom teacher is available on the Museum webpage. School tours are $1 per student and classroom visits with hands-on objects are $10 per class.

Heritage Services Research Library and Research Services The contents of our research library, archives and ar fact collec ons, including 75 years of digi zed local newspapers, can be accessed on site, free of charge. In 2013, 112 public research requests were fulfilled.

Theatre

Archives Photograph reproduc ons from the collec on are available for $10 each. Research services are offered by our Archivist and other staff, at $20/hour aZer the first free half hour.

Artifacts Consulta ons with our Collec ons Technician about the proper care of your heritage objects or iden fica on of objects, rocks or fossils in your collec on are possible and free of charge.

Conservation Conserva on advice is available. Encapsula on of your family photographs or documents is available, as well, conserva on supplies can be purchased.

Facility Rental Small weddings can be held at the Museum for a fee of $25 and birthday par es for $40.

DID YOU KNOW? The Legend of Twelve Foot Davis: Fur trader, gold miner and pioneer. He discovered his gold in Barkerville, BC on a land claim that was only 12 feet wide.

Close Call!

In 1962, a runaway tanker truck hurtled down Highway 2 (Pat’s Creek Road) when it’s brakes failed. It pped and scraped along the pavement sparking a fire that consumed the northwest side of Main Street. Thankfully, no lives were lost.

Tobogganing Fun!!!

The hills throughout Peace River make tobogganing a popular ac vity for everyone during the winter months! Peace River has two toboggan hills that are managed and maintained by the Community Services Department.

Please remember the following, to ensure that you and your family have a safe sledding adventure: • Please walk up the hill on the sides and keep the middle of the hill open for those who are sledding down.

• Do not stand in the middle or at the boJom of the hill, move to the sides as soon as possible to avoid oncoming sliders.

• Never pour water on the hill or make jumps/ramps as this causes unsafe condi ons for other users.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES For those who require transporta on assistance, Taxi Passes are provided through the Community Services Department and are available to those individuals who fit one or more of the following categories. All applicants MUST be Town of Peace River Residents. For more informa on about this program, please call us at 780-624-1000.

Clients may include: • Registered students at Northern Lakes College • Combined family income level below $25,000 • Individual Income Level below $15,000 • Seniors – over the age of 65 • Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) recipients • Clients of the Peace River Regional Women’s Shelter • Person’s with a Medical or Physical Disability

Program Guidelines: • The plas c Taxi Card, that is issued to all applicants upon approval, allows the client to purchase 40 ckets (two booklets of 20 ckets) every 4 weeks • One cket is provided to the Taxi Driver by the client • Only one cket can be charged or provided per ride, regardless of number of passengers.

• The Taxi Driver shall collect: • 1 signed cket plus $2.50 cash from the client, for a taxi ride on one side of the river • Or 1 signed cket plus $5.00 cash from the client, for a taxi ride to the opposite side of the river • Clients purchase 1 booklet of 20 ckets for $15.00.

FCSS Family Fair A free event for families where par cipants can enjoy visi ng informa on booths, playing some games, watching local entertainment and a free lunch. This event is held every two years.

Active Playtime Program This program is held at the Peace River Toy Library and features facilitated paren ng informa on and discussion opportuni es for parent(s), while their children play with the many toys that are available on site.

Parade of Programs Each spring and fall we host our Parade of Programs events, where local not-for-profit groups aJend and share informa on about their programming and services with the public. Over 300 people aJend this event each me it is held!

For Youth...

Roots of Empathy Program Students learn about emo onal literacy (understanding and recognizing the feelings of others) and empathy while being visited by their baby “teacher” throughout the school year. This program is evidence-based and has shown to reduce levels of aggression and bullying. FCSS oversees the Roots of Empathy Program in Peace River and provides training for new instructors annually. We also welcome parents of new babies who are born in July and/or August prior to the start of the new school year. Please phone 780-624-1000 for more informa on about this program.

Home Alone Program The Children Home Alone Safely Program teaches children who are 10-12 years old, the safety skills they need to be on their own at home for short periods of me. Courses are offered in the Spring and Fall and are provided at no charge.

Olweus Anti-Bullying Program FCSS plays an ac ve role with the Peace Regional An -Bullying CommiJee which is a group of agencies with a vested interest in the reduc on of bullying in schools and in the community.

Family School Liaison Worker FCSS partners with Peace River School Division #10 and Holy Family Catholic School Division #37 to fund a full me Family School Liaison worker that works in some of our local Elementary Schools. This posi on provides students and their families with a strong connec on with local community support resources.

For Adults...

Mental Health First Aid Workshops This workshop teaches individuals how to recognize the symptoms of mental crisis in youth, as well as how to provide the necessary supports and/or referrals to those in need.

Woman Wise Program Woman Wise is a group of young mothers between the ages of 18 and 30 who meet on a bi-weekly basis to develop and promote healthy parent/ child rela onships and increase paren ng skills. This group also focuses on promo ng healthy families through educa on, posi ve self-care ac vi es and a strong suppor ve network system. This program is provided by Peace Regional Outreach and is co-funded by Peace River FCSS. Suicide Prevention Workshops Suicide Talk, Straight Talk and TaJered Teddies Workshops are offered on an annual basis to provide suicide preven on based informa on for everyone! This group of programs are offered in partnership with Alberta Health Services, Mental Health Promo ons.

Client submission Home Support Program The Home Support Program is a service provided to assist Seniors and persons with physical or mental challenges, with their daily living needs by providing light housekeeping and friendly listening services.

We tailor our program to each individual to meet the ever changing needs of each client. Referrals for this program are welcome and applica ons can be picked up at our office.

For Seniors…

Meals on Wheels Program Promo ng dignity and independence for the elderly and/or those who are physically challenged by delivering nutri ous meals straight to their homes.

Meals are delivered every Thursday evening and clients can order a hot meal and also have a choice of ordering frozen meals for the rest of the week. Meal delivery volunteers for this program are also welcome!

Volunteer Income Tax Program The Volunteer Income Tax Program is for low income Seniors and persons with disabili es. This free service provides trained volunteers to help individuals complete their income tax returns and is available for Peace River residents. This program does not complete income tax for individuals who are deceased, bankrupt, or who have any type of business, farm or rental income.

Senior’s Fair FCSS hosts an annual Seniors Health & Wellness Fair to provide informa on on the various resources and programming that is available for them in the Peace Region. Much like our biannual Family Fair, the Seniors Fair features booths where various organiza ons provide useful informa on regarding local and regional resources that directly complement the needs of our Seniors.

Community Development…

Newcomer Information Peace River FCSS provides useful informa on about the Town of Peace River through our handy-dandy Welcome Package. This package is free and filled with all sorts of not-for-profit informa on about Peace River.

Service Provider for Alberta Seniors and Community Supports This program provides assistance to Seniors by explaining and assis ng in the comple on of forms for the various programs provided through the Alberta Government as well as comple ng passport applica on forms. These programs include, but are not limited to The Special Needs Assistance Program, Dental and Op cal programs, the Residen al Access Modifica on Program and the Alberta Seniors Benefit Program. We also offer referrals to assist in strengthening the emo onal health and wellness of the individuals in the community.

Grants to Groups Funding A number of preven on based agencies throughout Peace River work very hard to provide quality, caring, wrap-around services to those in need. Some mes local programming is limited due to budget restric ons or other such limita ons. The FCSS Grants to Groups Funding Program provides funding assistance to these groups, so that their services may remain available to the community. Applica ons for this Grant are collected in January, annually.

Family and Youth Interagency Committee and Email Network This commiJee is an informal communica on network for agencies that provide services to families in the Peace Region. It is also a wonderful way to keep our non-profit agencies and the general community connected and informed about local not-for-profit events, programs and ac vi es. Senior’s Week FCSS hosts an annual Senior’s Week event in celebra on of Seniors Week to honour all Seniors for their posi ve impact on so many lives and for ac ng as vibrant mentors and leaders for their families, friends and their community.

Snow Shoveling Program The Seniors Snow Shoveling Program is provided through the combined efforts of the Community Services Department and the Peace River Correc onal Centre. The program is intended for senior ci zens who are unable to physically shovel the snow, have no financial means to have the service done and have no family or friends who are able to assist with their snow removal.

FCSS Volunteer Email Network What is volunteering? Volunteering is the prac ce of people working on behalf of others or a par cular cause without payment for their me and services. Residents of Peace River are ac ve volunteers, giving freely of their me to fundraise, work at special events and serve as unpaid members of various boards or commiJees. For informa on about local volunteering opportuni es, or to volunteer for Town of Peace River programs and/or events, please call our office at 780-624-1000.

Adopt a Grandparent Program Some of our local seniors are living hundreds of miles from their families, are low income/living on a fixed income, or need an extra boost during the Christmas holidays. We collect and deliver giZ dona ons to these seniors just before Christmas Holidays. Donated giZs might include hand-made Christmas cards from the kids, giZ cards for groceries, puHng together a small hamper of puzzles, treats, large print books, or buying supplies for their favorite craZ project. To take part in this fabulous program, just give us a call at 780-624-1000.
