PEACE REGIONAL POOL is one of the most popular facilities in Peace River among visitors and residents alike. Over 55,000 visitors visit the pool on an annual basis! This fabulous facility was built and opened to the public in June 1989. The Pool has many attractions that cater to our wide range of visitors, from a water slide for our more adventurous user to a steam room and hot tub for those that like to take it easy.

In addition to it’s physical features, the pool is open throughout the year and hosts a full range of programming options, from Aqua Aerobics to Senior/Adult classes. Other programs include lessons for all ages, 6 months to 99+ as well as Lifeguarding and Instructing Courses, so that you can start your Aquatic Career at the Peace Regional Pool.

POOL RULES AND GUIDELINES Parent and Tot This time is designated for adults to bring their young children for calm playtime.

Family Swim Come swimming and meet other families during our Family Swim times.

An adult must accompany all children (0-17 years) into the water, no exceptions.

Public Swim Everyone is welcome! Children 8 years and older can swim without parental supervision. Children 7 years of age or younger must be accompanied by a responsible person 14 years and older, within arms reach at all times.

Family/Lane Swim During these times there is one lane available for lane swimming.

Parent to Child Ratio Children under age 8 requires 1 adult to every 4 children (within arms reach at all times). Children over the age of 8 r equires 1 adult for ever y 10 children (Family and Private Rentals only). ADULTS MUST BE IN THE WATER AT ALL TIMES.

Bather Safety Guidelines  No street shoes may be worn in wet traffic areas  Children less than 8 years old must be actively supervised and within arms reach of a responsible person fourteen years of age or older at all times  Patrons are required to take a cleansing shower before entering the pool  Proper swim attire must be worn at all times (no cut off jeans, white t-shirts, etc.)  Young children, 35 months and under, and anyone who is incontinent must wear protective, water-resistant swimwear in order to minimize the introduction of contamination  No pets are allowed onto the premises, except for seeing eye dogs or other animals used to assist persons with disabilities  Diving in the shallow end is not permitted  Roughhousing or putting other swimmers at risk is not permitted  Spitting, spouting or otherwise polluting the water is prohibited  No glass containers are permitted on the pool deck  Foul language and disrespectful behaviour are not permitted and are grounds for expulsion from the pool  Any person with diarrhea or a history of diarrhea over the previous two weeks must not use the facility  No chewing gum in change rooms, on the deck, or in the water  Intoxicated persons are not allowed inside the facility  Food must be consumed in a designated area only

Refund Policy All requests for refunds must be given to pool management 2 weeks before the first class of the registered program. Requests can be verbal, written or in the form of a doctor’s note. Refunds will be given in the form of pool credit or cheque. Allow 2-3 weeks for reimbursement.

Placement in Red Cross Swim Programs depends on many variables including age, skill, proficiency, previous experience, and readiness.

1

6 years old

This is an entry level for children ready to move in shallow water. This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool area, and introduces floats and glides with kicks.

Children build their endurance by improving distance.

Completed Level 1

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface while doing front, back and side glides. Swimmers work on front swim, and learn about deep water activities and the proper use of their Personal Floatation Device (PFD). They will also perform a 10 meter swim.

Completed Level 2

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back.

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5 meter front swim.

Swimmers will also learn the sitting dive and will be able to swim 15 meters continuously.

Completed Level 3

Swimmers learn back swim and front crawl (10m), work on flutter kick on back, perform kneeling dives, will be introduced to sculling and will be able to swim 25 meters continuously.

Swimmers develop front crawl (15m), learn back crawl (15m) and whip kick on back, learn stride dive and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back, and swim 50 meters continuously.

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (25m), learn elementary back stroke and the dolphin kick.

They will also swim 75 meters continuously.

Completed Level 6

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m). They learn front scull and stride entry. Perform whip kick on front and the dolphin kick. They also swim 150 meters continuously.

Completed Level 7

Front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke will be refined. They will also learn breast stroke, eggbeater/tread water, feet-first surface dive and standing shallow dive.

They will also swim 300 meters continuously.

9

Completed Level 8

Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. Swimmers will also learn the side stroke kick, and head-first surface dive and to swim 400 meters continuously.

Completed Level 9

Further refinement of strokes. They learn side stroke, dolphin kick (vertical), and feet-and head-first surface dives with underwater swim. They will also be able to swim 500 meters continuously.

LEADERSHIP COURSES

Bronze Star is the pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and with partners. They learn CPR and develop Water Smart confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard.

Prerequisite: Level 7 and must be between 10 years old or older.

The NL Program develops the basic lifeguarding skills, principles and decision making process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies.

Prerequisite: SFA Standard First Aid/CPR, Bronze Cross and must be 16 years of age.

Full NL Course: April 3,4,7,9,11,12 NL Recert. Course: May 15 11-3pm

Cost $99.00 + gst

Bronze Medallion This course teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles from the four components of water rescue education: judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries, defence and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types.

Prerequisite: Must be 13 years old or older.

National Lifeguard (NL)

Bronze Cross

Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR Level C A comprehensive two-day course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need training due to work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. Includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines. Meets federal and a variety of provincial/ territorial regulations for Standard First Aid and CPR. Exceeds competitors’ standards by including injury prevention content, CPR and AED. March 5 & 6 May 9 & 10

This course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. This course is the prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification.

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor This course teaches those who would like to teach swimming to others the techniques to be able to teach lessons. This course focuses on teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback.

Prerequisite: Must be 15 years old or older.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) This course focuses on the planning and teaching of Red Cross Swim Lessons, instructional emergency response skills and teaching techniques specific to our programs. The certification issued allows candidates to teach all the Red Cross Swim Programs.

Prerequisite: AWSI (Assisted Water Safety Instructor Course) Full Course: May 1-3 or June 28-30 Cost: $200.00 + gst WSI Recert. Course March 23 (9-1pm) Cost: $85.00 + gst

ADULT CLASSES Scared Stiff This course is designed to develop a swimmer’s confidence in the water through basic floatation, movement, and breathing skills and foster the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to stay safe, in and around the water.

Basic 1 Red Cross Swim Basics 1 offers an introduction to swimming with a focus on front swim.

Basic 2 Red Cross Swim Basic 2 focuses on developing front and back crawl, establishing comfort in deep water, and increasing the swimming distance.

Strokes Red Cross Swim Strokes is a stand-alone stroke development program for adults and teens, and for participants in Red Cross Swim Kids who require additional work on a stroke. The program is developed to further develop strokes chosen by the swimmer in consultation with the Water Safety Instructor, and increase swimming distances and proficiency.

Private Lessons Private lessons are available for $26.00 per hour. They are intended to assist with stroke improvement, one-on-one instruction, help with comfort level if you are “scared stiff”, etc.

Please note that private lessons do not replace or fast-track our regularly scheduled Red Cross Lessons. Come and see us to register.

Rentals Who turned out the lights? Each time the power goes out, the pool pumps turn off. If the power is out less than 2 minutes staff can simply turn the pumps back on. BUT if the power is out for more than 2 minutes, the filters lose their cleansing chemicals and a back wash is required for both the main pool and the hot tub. This requires staff to dump both filter tanks, clean them out and add new chemicals. This process can take up to 3 or more hours.

Hours of Operation: Spring/Summer Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm The Baytex Energy Centre is the home of Peace River Minor Hockey, Peace River Skating Club, North Peace Navigators Jr. B, Peace River Speed Skating Association, as well as Recreational Hockey and Old-timers Hockey Leagues. Our local schools also use this facility for skating activities for their students.

The Baytex Energy Centre is a single ice surface 85’ X 200’ facility, and the ice season runs from August to the end of March. Since it’s opening in the fall of 1978, this arena has been the host facility to many local events and activities year round. The Baytex Energy Centre has seating for 1700 persons in heated comfort, with a fantastic view of the ice from every seat. It also features a separate viewing area for those who prefer to keep warm while watching.

Amenities include concession area, second level lobby meeting area with view over the ice surface, press area, and nine dressing rooms.

The upstairs lobby area is available for rent and is a great area for hosting birthday parties, workshops or exercise classes.

PLANS FOR THE NEW ARENA Town of Peace River, through community consultations and gathering community feedback, has started the process towards the building of a new arena. For questions about this facility, please contact the Community Services Department at 780-624-1000.

Preliminary Arena Design Information What has Council approved?

In June of 2013 - Council approved the engineering on phase 1 and 2 of the Multiplex concept;  Renovation of the Baytex Energy Centre, addition of a second ice surface, field house and a hub connecting these facilities to the pool.  The proposed phase 1 was the addition of a second ice surface to the Baytex Energy Centre, phase 2 was the addition of a hub, connecting the existing arena and the second ice surface to the Peace Regional Pool.

What has changed?  The existing Baytex Energy Centre has suffered ongoing foundation issues and it is no longer a viable option to renovate the building.  Our Engineers have recommended that it would be more cost effective to build a new arena.



What is the plan now?  The Town of Peace River Council has prioritized the construction of a new arena with additional internal amenities as the existing arena does not have a lifespan longer than approximately 5 years.

What happened to the Multiplex Plan?  The overall Multiplex concept still exists, as noted in one of the design concepts. The components that were proposed include a second ice surface, field house and a connection to the pool and all other facilities.  Council has had to change the phasing of the project and adjust it to include a new arena, as opposed to renovating the existing arena.

The Peace River Museum, Archives and Mackenzie Centre (PRMA), as a Town owned and operated facility, is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the lives and events of the people in our community’s past and present. With a vast collection of locally donated artifacts, photographs, maps and diaries, staff curate new exhibits, address research requests and deliver relevant programming throughout the year.

Three galleries, with rotating exhibits, are featured inside the building, with a replica NWMP Cabin and the wheel shaft of the paddleboat, the S.S. D.A. Thomas, exhibited on the grounds. The significance of the land on which the Museum sits, alongside the river, is noted in signage of the story of Felix Akenum Shaw, the original Métis landowner.

June 14, Heritage Run: This annual fundraising, organized by the Peace River Running Club, always draws a large crowd of runners and walkers. This has become the Museum’s main annual fundraising event.

July 1, Canada Day: Dignitaries will be on hand to begin the Town’s ceremony with the raising of the flag and inspiring speeches. From there, you are also invited to take part in the Children’s Canada Day Bike Parade, heading to Riverfront Park to our Canada Day Event.

July-August: Come and see St. Augustine Mission and Mackenzie Cairn. Our Heritage Interpreter will be on site to give tours and answer questions. Check our blog for the schedule of dates and times.

August 3, Heritage Day: The Museum will be hosting an interpretive walk, location to be determined.

Embodied in these historic objects and exhibits are the stories of our community’s experiences, our history, our culture and our traditions.

Museum Gift Shop Our Gift Shop features locally created gifts and souvenirs, along with a thorough selection of social and natural history books.

Boards and Committees With the advisory support of our Museum Board, Heritage Places Committee and the Sir Alexander Mackenzie Historical Society, we remain committed and enthusiastic about the stories, people, events and objects of Peace River’s heritage.

School Programming

Main Gallery Toys Stories - You’ve got a playdate with the Peace River Museum! - This interactive exhibit looks at how toys influenced little girls and boys behaviour, activities and even career choices. The exhibit runs until September 2015.

Teachers Guide The exhibits at the PRMA speak to many curriculum outcomes and a guide indicating how the PRMA can support the classroom teacher is available on the Museum webpage. School tours are $1 per student and classroom visits with hands-on objects are $10 per class.

When a tree falls in the forest - An exhibit exploring the human impact on our boreal forest from early First Nations, to the impressions of homesteaders to contemporary forest practices.

Daishowa Marubeni International Ltd., celebrating 25 years in Peace River, will be a community partner in this exhibit, opening October 2015.

Research Library and Research Services The contents of our research library, archives and artifact collections, including 75 years of digitized local newspapers, can be accessed on site, free of charge. In 2014, 87 public research requests were fulfilled.

Anniversary Celebrations - The Museum continues to celebrate historical anniversaries in 2015 and invites the community to share their stories and photographs with us to develop a greater understanding about the Peace River Masonic Lodge, the postal service and Shaftesbury Settlement survey celebrations.

Fur Trade Gallery The impact of the fur trade history along the Peace River is told through this permanent hands-on gallery of furs, traps, canoes and HBC blankets, along with deftly sewn First Nations artifacts from the region. Canadian explorers such as Alexander Mackenzie and David Thompson paddled this river, made Fort Fork a base for their discoveries and diarized their time spent here. The fort façade of our building offers a strong visual depiction of this historic era.

Art Wall Artists help document and record who we were, what we thought and how we see our world today. In partnership with the Peace of Art artists, monthly solo art exhibits are featured at the Museum. Viewing these works of art each month is free.

Northern Alberta Railway Station (NAR) This Provincial Historic Site was built in 1916.

While owned by the Town of Peace River, it hosts the offices of the Peace River and District Chamber of Commerce.

Artifacts Consultations with our Collections Technician about the proper care of your heritage objects or identification of objects, rocks or fossils in your collection are possible and free of charge.

Conservation Conservation advice is available. Encapsulation of your family photographs or documents is available, as well, conservation supplies can be purchased.

Facility Rental Intimate functions can be held at the Museum for a fee of $25/ hour and birthday parties for $40 (flat rate).

DID YOU KNOW? 85 million years ago, ocean levels rose and the Arctic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico met and covered the Peace Country. That is why we can find evidence of extinct sea creatures, like ammonites, in our area.

In 1962, a runaway tanker truck hurtled down Highway 2 (Pat’s Creek Road) when it’s brakes failed. It tipped and scraped along the pavement sparking a fire that consumed the northwest side of Main Street.

Thankfully, no lives were lost.

Ball Diamonds Peace River features several ball diamonds, ranging from slow pitch fields to men’s league. Fields are maintained and managed through the Community Services Department. For information about the Town of Peace River ball diamonds or to book them for your group, please contact our Recreation Facilities Coordinator at 780-624-1000.

Closure Due to Weather In order to keep our fields in tip-top shape, it is sometimes necessary for the Community Services Department to restrict usage and cancel events/bookings during times of extreme weather conditions.

Cancellations are made via phone and/or email to all main coordinators of the local user groups that may be affected. These coordinators are then responsible for notifying their registered members. Groups will not be billed for bookings that are cancelled by the Community Services Department.

Any teams/groups who still play on the field despite a cancellation due to weather being called by the Community Services Department, will be held liable for any damages to the field.

Playgrounds

In Peace River, we are fortunate to have over 12 playgrounds scattered throughout our community. For a community of our size, that’s quite a lot of play options and that’s not even including the playgrounds you will find at each of our local schools!

NAME

Along with each facility comes the need for regular maintenance and upkeep. Community Services staff rotate through a regular maintenance schedule and inspect each playground once per week in the summer and once per month in the winter. For information about any of the parks and playgrounds in Peace River, or to report vandalism or request required maintenance, please phone 780-624-1000.

Parks Along with our playgrounds we also have several parks that we maintain throughout the summer months. If you are looking to reserve a park facility for a family get together, or you require a stage and/or some tables and chairs for your special event our department would be the place to contact. Just give us a call and we will be happy to help you with your reservation.

Memorial Bench Program The Town of Peace River Memorial Bench Program provides individuals, families and groups with the option of having Memorial Benches installed along Peace River’s Parks and Trails System.

All applicants for the Memorial Bench Sponsorship Program must fill out an application form and submit it to the Community Services Department, Recreation Facilities Coordinator. Green Space Management All over our beautiful town you will see large areas of nicely mowed grass just waiting to be enjoyed. These large areas are managed by the Community Services Department and maintained by contracted services.

Beautification Each spring, the Community Services Department’s focus swings from winter facility management to spring flowers, grass cutting and parks and playground management. Each year, local greenhouses are asked to bid for the contract to have their flowers featured at locations throughout our beautiful community. From the flower planters down Main Street, to the hanging baskets and garden plots at our Town owned facilities, you will notice brightly colored flowers and grasses.

There are over 7,000 bedding plants planted each spring and 65 hanging flower baskets!

These beds and baskets are watered 3 times a week to keep them looking their best all summer long.

Naturalization Naturalization is one of the ways in which we manage our green spaces and there is merit in adopting a more ‘natural’ approach to tending and maintaining specific areas of our public green spaces. Given the topography of the Town of Peace River, with great slopes and hills, oftentimes cutting the natural prairie grasses proves harmful by increasing soil erosion and moisture loss through evaporation. Certain areas that may have been cut regularly in the past have been eliminated from the cutting schedule in order to preserve the topsoil, and to improve the safety of the grass cutting personnel. In general, those slopes that are most susceptible to soil erosion are also steep enough to be hazardous to equipment operators.

Weed Control The Community Services Department also manages weed issues on Town owned public green space. Currently we adhere to the following schedule based on available resources and suitable weather conditions:  Two applications for broadleaf weed control are given, the first, on or before June 30th on all sports fields and ball diamonds and the second application, on or before August 30th.  Weeds found on other public property are treated on an individual target basis.  Areas of previously identified noxious weed infestations are targeted annually to reduce further spreading/ infestations.

Noxious Weeds Noxious weeds can grow and spread quickly, invading crops and ecosystems, making properties unsightly, overgrown and infested. There are a number of species that have become rampant in Peace River: Common Toadflax, Canada Thistle, Scentless Chamomile and Perennial Sow Thistle.

PERENNIAL SOW THISTLE Grows up to 1.5 metres tall on a single stem, branching near the top. Branches have prickly leaves and end in large, loose clusters of yellow, dandelion-like flowers. The entire plant has a milky juice, which is why it also goes by the name, Milk Thistle.

CANADA THISTLE Grows up to 1.5 metres tall with clusters of flowers, ranging in colour from purple to white, with prickly leaves.

DALMATIAN TOADFLAX The stem can be as short as 15 cm or grow up to 1 metre tall. The leaves are numerous, alternate in colour from pale green to gray-green, are long and narrow, pointed at both ends, with smooth edges. It has yellow, snapdragon-like flowers with orange throats.

SCENTLESS CHAMOMILE Grows up to 1 metre tall with white daisy-like flowers. When crushed, leaves have no scent.

HELP US TAKE ACTION AGAINST NOXIOUS WEEDS! As a property owner, you have many options for controlling noxious weeds:  You can mow your property with mowers or weed eaters to 10 cm (4") or less. This will help to cut down the weeds before they go to seed, and will kill them off in a couple of years.  You can also pull weeds out of the ground by hand to control small numbers, making sure that you pull the entire root out with the plant. Dispose of weeds in plastic bags to ensure that the seeds do not dry out and blow away in the wind.  Keeping your lawn healthy will make it more difficult for weeds to grow or go to seed on your property.  Spraying weeds is also an option. Please consult your local greenhouse to learn about eco-friendly products and how to apply them properly.

This exciting program is filled with afternoon crafts, games, tours and recreationally based activities for children 6-10 years of age. Summer Fun is offered Monday-Friday afternoons from 1-4:30pm, through July and August and parents/ guardians can sign their children up for the weeks that fit their summer schedules the best. Registration is just $35-40 per week and information about the specific activities for each week is made available the last week in May. Registration is held the first week in June. Extreme Adventures is an adventure based program for older youth from 10-16 years of age and features several outdoor, adventure based activities through July and August.

Activities in the past have included paintball, hiking, biking, science camp, overnight campouts, canoeing, painting, photography, and even Zumba classes! Sign up for your favorite activities and join us for one exciting adventure after another!

 The plastic Taxi Card, issued to all applicants upon approval, allows the client to purchase 40 tickets (two booklets of 20 tickets) every 4 weeks  Tickets are for one time use per ride  One ticket is provided to the Taxi Driver by the client  Only one ticket can be charged or provided per ride, regardless of number of passengers.  The Taxi Driver shall collect:  1 signed ticket plus $2.50 cash from the client, for a taxi ride on one side of the river or  1 signed ticket plus $5.00 cash from the client, for a taxi ride to the opposite side of the river  Clients purchase 1 booklet of 20 tickets for $15.00.

FCSS Family Fair A free event for families where participants can enjoy information booths, playing games, watching local entertainment and a free lunch.

This event is held every two years.

Active Playtime Program This program is held at Peace Playland (formerly: Peace River Toy Library and features facilitated parenting information and discussion opportunities for parent(s), while their children play with the many toys that are available on site.

Parade of Programs Each spring and fall we host our Parade of Programs events, where local sports, activity groups and local not-for-profit groups attend, take registrations and share information about their programming and services with the public. Parents: This is where you can sign up your children for summer programs/sports/activities all in one convenient location. Over 300 people attend this event each time it is held!

For Youth...

Roots of Empathy Program Students learn about emotional literacy (understanding and recognizing the feelings of others) and empathy while visiting with their baby “teacher” throughout the school year. This internationally recognized program has been proven to reduce levels of aggression and bullying.

Mental Health First Aid Workshops This workshop teaches individuals how to recognize the symptoms of mental crisis in youth, as well as how to provide the necessary supports and/or referrals to those in need.

Woman Wise Program Woman Wise is a group of young mothers between the ages of 18 and 30 who meet on a bi-weekly basis to develop and promote healthy parent/child relationships and increase parenting skills. This group also focuses on promoting healthy families through education, positive selfcare activities and a strong supportive network system. This program is provided by Peace Regional Outreach and is co-funded by Peace River FCSS. Suicide Prevention Workshops Suicide Talk, Straight Talk and Tattered Teddies Workshops are offered on an annual basis to provide suicide prevention based information for everyone! This group of programs are offered in partnership with Alberta Health Services, Mental Health Promotions.

We make it our business to know our community and all that it has to offer for support services and if we don’t know, we will find out and get back to you.

Home Alone Program The Children Home Alone Safely Program teaches children who are age 10-12 years, the safety skills they need to be on their own at home for short periods of time.

Olweus Anti-Bullying Program FCSS plays an active role with the Peace Regional Anti-Bullying Committee, a group of agencies with a vested interest in the reduction of bullying in schools and in the community.

Family School Liaison Worker FCSS provides funding towards a full time Family School Liaison worker that works in some of our local Elementary Schools. This position provides students and their families with wrap-around support and links to additional local resources.

For Seniors…

Meals on Wheels Program Promoting dignity and independence for the elderly and/or those who are physically challenged by delivering nutritious meals straight to their homes.

A hot meal is delivered every Thursday evening and, if they are interested, our clients can also order frozen meals for the rest of the week. Volunteer drivers for this program are welcome and so are donations to help subsidize the cost for our seniors.

Senior’s Fair FCSS hosts an annual Senior’s Health & Wellness Fair to provide information on the various resources and programming that is available for them in the Peace Region. Much like our biannual Family Fair, the Senior’s Fair features booths where various organizations provide useful information regarding local and regional resources that directly complement the needs of our Seniors.

Service Provider for Alberta Seniors and Community Supports This program provides assistance to Seniors by explaining and assisting in the completion of forms for the various programs provided through the Alberta Government as well as completing passport application forms. These programs include, but are not limited to The Special Needs Assistance Program, Dental and Optical programs, the Residential Access Modification Program and the Alberta Seniors Benefit Program. We also offer referrals to assist in strengthening the emotional health and wellness of the individuals in the community.

Assistance with filling out applications and forms for this program is provided through our FCSS office.

Senior’s Week FCSS hosts an annual event in celebration of Senior’s Week to honour all Seniors for their positive impact on so many lives and for acting as vibrant mentors and leaders for their families, friends and their community.

Snow Shoveling Program The Seniors Snow Shoveling Program is provided through the combined efforts of the Community Services Department and the Peace River Correctional Centre. The program is intended for senior citizens who are unable to physically shovel the snow, have no financial means to have the service done and have no family or friends who are able to assist with their snow removal.

“I always had pride and fear of expressing my needs to someone other than my family. I was told by a friend to call Community Services……being a bit hesitant….

I thought to give (it) a shot…. you have no choice. A kind lady answered the phone and then transferred me to the person who helps seniors. In a flash my pride and fear went away…I was given assurance and was treated with respect….my questions were answered…..and in 2 days I received the help I needed.”

Client submission Home Support Program The Home Support Program is a service provided to assist Seniors and persons with physical or mental challenges, with their daily living needs by providing light housekeeping and friendly listening services.

We tailor our program to each individual to meet the ever changing needs of each client. Referrals for this program are welcome and applications can be picked up at our office.

Volunteer Income Tax Program The Volunteer Income Tax Program is for low income Seniors and persons with disabilities. This free service provides trained volunteers to help individuals complete their income tax returns and is available for Peace River residents. This program does not complete income tax for individuals who are deceased, bankrupt, or who have any type of business, farm or rental income.

Community Development…

Newcomer Information Peace River FCSS provides useful information about the Town of Peace River through our Newcomers Welcome Package. This package is free and filled with all sorts of not-for-profit information about Peace River.

Grants to Groups Funding A number of prevention based agencies throughout Peace River work very hard to provide quality, caring, wrap-around services to those in need. Sometimes local programming is limited due to budget restrictions or other such limitations. The FCSS Grants to Groups Funding Program provides funding assistance to these groups, so that their services may remain available to the community. Applications are available in January and the deadline for submissions is in February each year.

Family and Youth Interagency Committee and Email Network This committee is an informal communication network for agencies that provide services to families and youth in the Peace Region. It is also a wonderful way to keep our non-profit agencies and the general community connected and informed about local not-for-profit events, programs and activities. FCSS Supports Volunteers What is volunteering? Volunteering is the practice of people working on behalf of others or a particular cause without payment for their time and services. Residents of Peace River are active volunteers, giving freely of their time to fundraise, work at special events and serve as unpaid members of various boards or committees. To support and encourage volunteerism in our community, FCSS hosts an annual Volunteer Appreciation Day that treats our local volunteers to a free hot beverage of their choice. We also welcome volunteers to participate in any of our Town of Peace River Events. Wondering what there is to volunteer with in our community, stop by the office and we’ll share that information with you as well.

The PEACE RIVER MUNICIPAL LIBRARY & ART GALLERY is one of Peace River’s premier facilities! There is so much to do and our annual membership is super affordable! With your annual membership, you will have access to many free services and programs; from book borrowing, DVDs and audio books to a wide variety of online services, including newspaper and magazine downloads to free e-reading on your personal electronic devices.

During the summer months, youth can participate in various summer programs to help them keep busy during the summer break. A number of computers are also on hand for the public, with full, free access to the internet and Wi-Fi. Within this facility, there is also space to rent for meetings and/ or workshops, there is free space for non-profit or small groups and an art gallery to display local artwork, as well as a space for you to snuggle up with your favorite book in front of a cozy fireplace.
