PEACE REGIONAL POOL is one of the

most popular facilities in Peace River among visitors and residents alike. Over 60,000 visitors visit the pool on an annual basis! This fabulous facility was built and opened to the public in June 1989 and this year, they are celebrating their 25th anniversary! The Peace Regional Pool has many attractions that cater to our wide range of visitors, from a water slide for our more adventurous user to a steam room and hot tub for those that like to take it easy.

In addition to it’s physical features, the pool is open throughout the year and hosts a full range of programming options, from Aqua Aerobics to Water Walking. Other programs include lessons for all ages, 6 months and up, as well as Lifeguarding and Instructing Courses, so that you can start your aquatic career at the Peace Regional Pool.

POOL RULES AND GUIDELINES GUIDELINES Parent and Tot This time is designated for adults to bring their young children for calm playtime.

The Peace Regional Pool

Family Swim Come swimming and meet other families during our Family Swim times. An adult must accompany all children (0-17 years) into the water, no exceptions.

Public Swim Everyone is welcome! Children 8 years and older can swim without parental supervision. Children 7 years of age or younger must be accompanied by a responsible person 14 years or older, within arms reach at all times.

Family/Lane Swim During these times there is one lane available for lane swimming. Family swim rules apply.

Parent to Child Ratio Children under age 8 require 1 adult to every 4 children (within arms reach at all times). Children over the age of 8 require 1 adult for every 10 children (Family and Private Rentals only). ADULTS MUST BE IN THE WATER AT ALL TIMES.

Bather Safety Guidelines • No street shoes in wet traffic areas • Children less than 8 years old must be actively supervised and within arms reach of a responsible person 14 years of age or older at all times • Patrons are required to take a cleansing shower before entering the pool • Proper swim attire must be worn at all times (no cut-off jeans, white t-shirts, etc.)

• Young children, 35 months old and under, and anyone who is incontinent must wear protective, water-resistant swimwear in order to minimize the introduction of contamination • No pets are allowed into the facility, except for seeing eye dogs or other animals used to assist persons with disabilities • Diving in the shallow end is not permitted • Roughhousing, bullying or putting other swimmers at risk is not permitted • Spitting, spouting or otherwise polluting the water is prohibited • No glass containers are permitted on the pool deck • Foul language and disrespectful behaviour are not permitted and are grounds for expulsion from the pool • Any person with diarrhea or a history of diarrhea over the previous two weeks must not use the facility • No chewing gum in change rooms, on the pool deck or in the water • No bather may be intoxicated while using the facility • Food must be consumed in the designated area only

All requests for refunds must be given to pool management 2 weeks before the first class of the registered program. Requests can be verbal, written or in the form of a doctor’s note. Refunds will be given in the form of pool credit or by cheque. Allow 3-4 weeks for reimbursement.

Placement in Red Cross Swim Programs depends on many variables including age, skill, proficiency, previous experience and readiness.

1

6 years old

This is an entry level for children ready to move in shallow water. This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool area, and introduces floats and glides with kicks. Children build their endurance by improving distance.

2

Completed Level 1

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface while doing front, back and side glides. Swimmers work on front swim, learn about deep water activities and the proper use of a Personal Floating Device (PFD). They will also perform a 10 meter swim.

Completed Level 2

Swimmers will increase their distance on front and back swim.

Swimmers receive an orientation to the water and pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5 meter front swim. Swimmers will also learn the sitting dive and will be able to swim 15 meters continuously.

Completed Level 3

Swimmers learn back swim and front crawl (10m), work on flutter kick on back, perform kneeling dives, will be introduced to sculling and will be able to swim 25 meters continuously.

Swimmers develop front crawl (15m), learn back crawl (15m) and whip kick on back, learn stride dive and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back, and swim 50 meters continuously.

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (25m), learn elementary back stroke and the dolphin kick.

They will also swim 75 meters continuously.

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m). They learn front scull and stride entry. Perform whip kick on front and the dolphin kick. They also swim 150 meters continuously.

Front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke will be refined. They will also learn breast stroke, eggbeater/tread water, feet-first surface dive and standing shallow dive. They will also swim 300 meters continuously.

Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. Swimmers will also learn the side stroke kick and head-first surface dive and to swim 400 meters continuously.

Further refinement of strokes. They learn side stroke, dolphin kick (vertical), and feet-first and head-first surface dives with underwater swim. They will also be able to swim 500 meters continuously.

LEADERSHIP COURSES Jr. Lifeguard Club Jr. Lifeguard Club is designed to let youth experience the skill of lifeguarding. Activities include: fitness drills, water proficiency, first aid, recognition and rescue, stroke improvement, entries and kicks, all while having lots of fun!

Prerequisite: Level 5 and must be between 10 to 15 years old

Bronze Medallion This course teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles from the four components of water rescue education: judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries, defence and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types.

Prerequisite: Must be 13 years old or older

National Lifeguard (NL) The NL Program develops the basic lifeguarding skills, principles and decision making process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic situations and emergencies.

Prerequisite: SFA (Standard First Aid)/CPR, Bronze Cross and must be over 16 years of age.

Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR Level C A comprehensive two day course offering first aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need training due to work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. Includes the latest First Aid and CPR guidelines, meets Federal regulations and a variety of Provincial/Territorial regulations for Standard First Aid and CPR. It also exceeds competitors’ standards by including injury prevention content, CPR and AED. Feb 8, 9

Bronze Cross This course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. This course is the prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification.

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor This course teaches those who would like to instruct swimming to others, the techniques to be able to teach lessons. This course focuses on teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback.

Prerequisite: Must be 15 years old or older April 5/6 and 12/13 (4 day course) Cost: $245.00 + gst

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) This course focuses on the planning and teaching of Red Cross Swim Lessons, instructional emergency response skills and teaching techniques specific to our programs. The certification issued allows candidates to teach all the Red Cross Swim Programs.

Prerequisite: AWSI (Assisted Water Safety Instructor Course) June 14, 15 and 21 (3 day course)

ADULT/TEEN CLASSES Scared Stiff This course is designed to develop a swimmer’s confidence in the water through basic floatation, movement, and breathing skills and will help to foster the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to stay safe, in and around the water.

Basic 1 Red Cross Swim Basic 1 offers an introduction to swimming with a focus on front swim.

Basic 2 Red Cross Swim Basic 2 focuses on developing the front and back crawl, establishing increased comfort in deep water, as well as your swimming distance.

Red Cross Swim Strokes is a stand-alone stroke development program for adults and teens, and for participants in Red Cross Swim Kids who require additional work on a stroke. The program is developed to further develop strokes chosen by the swimmer in consultation with the Water Safety Instructor, to increase your swimming distance and proficiency.

Private lessons are available for $26.00 per hour. They are intended to assist with stroke improvement, and through oneon-one instruction, help with comfort level if you are “scared stiff”, etc. Please note that private lessons do not replace or fast-track our regularly scheduled Red Cross Lessons. Baytex Energy Centre is home to Peace River Minor

Hockey, Peace River Skating Club, North Peace Navigators Jr. B, Peace River Speed Skating Association, as well as Recreational Hockey and Old-timers Hockey Leagues. Our local schools also utilize this facility for skating activities for their students.

The Baytex Energy Centre is a single ice surface facility (85’ X 200’), and the ice season runs from August to the end of March. Opening in the fall of 1978, this arena has been the host facility to many local events and activities year round. The Baytex Energy Centre has seating for 1700 persons in heated comfort, with a fantastic view of the ice from every seat. It also features a separate viewing area for those who prefer to keep warm while watching.

Amenities include a concession area, second level lobby meeting area with a view of the ice surface, a press area, and nine dressing rooms.

The upstairs lobby area is available for rent and is a great area for hosting birthday parties, workshops, or exercise classes, etc.

During the summer months, April to the end of July, the Baytex Energy Centre is available for Trade Shows, Car Show & Shines, Circuses, and Concerts.

ATTENTION All User Groups: Allocation Meetings What is an Allocation Meeting?

User groups who wish to use our local fields, ball diamonds and ice times are invited to attend allocation meetings with the Community Services Department. Once all league and user group bookings have been allocated, all other requests are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Depending on which facility your group uses, there are three different meeting options.

Ball Diamond Allocation Meeting: This meeting is for all Peace River ball diamond user groups and is held in February.

Sports Field Allocation Meeting: This meeting is for all Peace River sports field user groups and is held in February.

Ice Allocation Meeting: This meeting is for all Baytex Energy Centre user groups and is held in June.

Please call the Recreation Facilities Coordinator at 780-624-1000 for more information about User Group Meetings, the dates in which they will be held or to book a Community Services managed facility for your league, group or club.

Boards and Committees With the advisory support of our Museum Board, Heritage Places Committee and the Sir Alexander Mackenzie Historical Society, we remain committed and enthusiastic about the stories, people, events and objects of Peace River’s heritage.

The Peace River Museum, Archives and Mackenzie Centre, as a Town owned and operated facility, is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the lives and events of the people in our community’s past and present.

With a vast collection of locally donated artifacts, photographs, maps and diaries, staff curate new exhibits, address research requests and deliver relevant programming throughout the year.

Upcoming Events and Programs March (Date TBA): Environment and Sustainable Resources specialist, Lyle Fullerton, speaks about the history and contemporary issues around the Wood Buffalo populations in northern Alberta.

June 8th, Heritage Run: This annual fundraising event always draws a large crowd of runners and walkers. Thanks to the volunteer efforts of the Peace River Running Club and all the participants, this has become the Museum’s main annual fundraising event.

July 1st, Canada Day: The Town’s Canada Day celebration begins at the Museum with dignitaries and free admission and carries on with fun family activities in Riverfront Park.

August 4th, Heritage Day: To learn more about the people who built our community in the early days, join us at the Mount Pleasant and Anglican Church Cemeteries for an interpretive walk.

Three galleries, with rotating exhibits, are featured inside the building, with a replica NWMP Cabin and the wheel shaft of the paddle-wheeler, the S.S. D.A. Thomas, exhibited on the grounds. The significance of the land on which the Museum sits, alongside the river, is noted in signage of the story of Felix Akenum Shaw, the original Métis landowner.

Embodied in these historic objects and exhibits are the stories of our community’s experiences, our history, our culture and our traditions.

July-August (Date TBA): Regional tours will be conducted at various historic sites, pending grant approval, including St. Augustine Mission Church, Mackenzie Cairn, and the gravesite of Twelve Foot Davis.

School Programming

Main Gallery A Sense of the Land and It’s People: A Private Collection This is a collection of West Coast and Plains First Nations artifacts and is on loan from local physician Dr. David Welch. These personal objects demonstrate how the land and its resources informed and influenced the tools and artistic expressions of the Western Nations. The exhibit runs until December 2014.

Teachers Guide The exhibits at our Museum speak to many curriculum outcomes and a guide indicating how we can support the classroom teacher is available on the Museum’s webpage. School tours are $1 per student and classroom visits with hands-on objects are $10 per class.

Heritage Services

Peace River Gallery For 2014, this gallery will feature a series of rotating exhibits celebrating the 100th anniversaries of Peace River Crossing, the beginning of World War I, the Peace River Record Gazette, Valley Printers and the Peace River Fireman’s Association. The Museum invites the community to share their stories and photographs with us to develop a greater understanding about these historical events.

Research Library and Research Services The contents of our research library, archives and artifact collections, including 75 years of digitized local newspapers, can be accessed on site, free of charge. In 2013, 112 public research requests were fulfilled.

Archives Photograph reproductions from the collection are available for $10 each. Research services are offered by our Archivist and other staff, at $20/hour after the first free half hour.

Fur Trade Gallery The impact of the fur trade history along the Peace River is told through this permanent hands-on gallery of furs, traps, canoes and HBC blankets, along with deftly sewn First Nations artifacts from the region.

Canadian explorers such as Alexander Mackenzie and David Thompson paddled this river, made Fort. Fork a base for their discoveries and diarized their time spent here. The fort façade of our building also offers a strong visual depiction of this historic era.

Artifacts Consultations with our Collections Technician about the proper care of your heritage objects or identification of objects, rocks or fossils in your collection are possible and free of charge.

Conservation Encapsulation of your family photographs or documents available, as well, conservation supplies can be purchased.

Art Wall For millennia, artists have helped document who we are and who we were. In partnership with the Peace of Art artists, monthly solo art exhibits are featured. In the first part of 2014, you can expect to view art by Dan Wheeler, Timothy Martin, Dianne Ireland and Rhonda Lanctot.

Facility Rental Small weddings can be held at the Museum for a fee of $25 and birthday parties for $40.

Northern Alberta Railway Station (NAR) This Provincial Historic Site was built in 1916. While owned by the Town of Peace River, it hosts the offices of the Peace River and District Chamber of Commerce.

This facility serves as the Visitor Information Centre for tourists and new residents alike. Three rooms display 1920s-30s Museum artifacts from the days of rail transportation in and out of the Peace.

Closure Due to Weather In order to keep our fields in tip-top shape, it is sometimes necessary for the Community Services Department to restrict usage and cancel events/bookings during times of extreme weather conditions.

Cancellations are made via phone and/or email to all main coordinators of the local user groups that may be affected. These coordinators are then responsible for notifying their registered members. Groups will not be billed for bookings that are cancelled by the Community Services Department.

Any teams/groups who still play on the field despite a cancellation due to weather being called, will be held liable for any damage to the field arising as a result of the abuse to the facility.

Peace River has many parks and playgrounds, all of which are managed by the Community Services Department.

Playgrounds NAME

PLAYGROUNDS In Peace River, we are fortunate to have over 12 playgrounds scattered throughout our community. For a community of our size, that’s quite a lot of play options and that’s not even including the playgrounds you will find at each of our local schools!

Along with each facility comes the need for regular maintenance and upkeep. Community Services staff rotate through a regular maintenance schedule and inspect each playground once per week in the summer and once per month in the winter. For information about any of the parks and playgrounds in Peace River, or to report vandalism or request required maintenance, please phone 780-624-1000.

PARKS Along with our playgrounds we also have several parks that we maintain throughout the summer months. If you are you looking to reserve a park facility for a family get together, or you require a stage and/or some tables and chairs for your special event our department would be the place to contact. BEAUTIFICATION Each spring, the Community Services Department’s focus swings from winter facility management to spring flowers, grass cutting and parks and playground management. Each year, local greenhouses are asked to bid for the contract to have their flowers featured at locations throughout our beautiful community. From the flower planters down Main Street, to the hanging baskets and garden plots at our Town owned facilities, you will notice brightly colored flowers and grasses. These flowers are watered and weeded throughout the summer months and help to add some color to our community.

NATURALIZATION Naturalization is one of the ways in which we manage our green spaces and there is merit in adopting a more ‘natural’ approach to tending and maintaining specific areas of our public green spaces. Given the topography of the Town of Peace River, with great slopes and hills, oftentimes cutting the natural prairie grasses proves harmful by increasing soil erosion and moisture loss through evaporation. Certain areas that may have been cut regularly in the past have been eliminated from the cutting schedule in order to preserve the topsoil, and to improve the safety of the grass cutting personnel. In general, those slopes that are most susceptible to soil erosion are also steep enough to be hazardous to equipment operators.

WEED CONTROL The Community Services Department also manages weed issues on Town owned public green space. Currently we adhere to the following schedule based on available resources and suitable weather conditions: • Two applications for broadleaf weed control are given, the first, on or before June 30th on all sports fields and ball diamonds and the second application, on or before August 30th.

• Weeds found on other public property are treated on an individual target basis.

• Areas of previously identified noxious weed infestations are targeted annually to reduce further spreading/ infestations.

NOXIOUS WEEDS Noxious weeds can grow and spread quickly, invading crops and ecosystems, making properties unsightly, overgrown and infested. There are a number of species that have become rampant in Peace River: Common Toadflax, Canada Thistle, Scentless Chamomile and Perennial Sow Thistle.

CANADA THISTLE Grows up to 1.5 metres tall with clusters of flowers, ranging in colour from purple to white, with prickly leaves.

PERENNIAL SOW THISTLE Grows up to 1.5 metres tall on a single stem, branching near the top. Branches have prickly leaves and end in large, loose clusters of yellow, dandelion-like flowers. The entire plant has a milky juice, which is why it also goes by the name, Milk Thistle.

DALMATIAN TOADFLAX The stem can be as short as 15cm or grow up to 1 metre tall. The leaves are numerous, alternate in color from pale green to gray-green, are long and narrow, pointed at both ends, with smooth edges. It has yellow, snapdragon-like flowers with orange throats.

SCENTLESS CHAMOMILE Grows up to 1 metre tall with white daisy-like flowers. When crushed, leaves have no scent.

HELP US TAKE ACTION AGAINST NOXIOUS WEEDS! As a property owner, you have many options for controlling noxious weeds: • You can mow your property with mowers or weed eaters to 10 cm (4") or less. This will help to cut down the weeds

before they go to seed, and will kill them off in a couple of years.

• You can also pull weeds out of the ground by hand to control small numbers, making sure that you pull the entire root out with the plant. Dispose of weeds in plastic bags to ensure that the seeds do not dry out and blow away in the wind.

• Keeping your lawn healthy will make it more difficult for weeds to grow or go to seed on your property.

• Spraying weeds is also an option. Please consult your local greenhouse to learn about eco-friendly products and how to apply them properly.

This exciting program is filled with afternoon crafts, games, tours and recreationally based activities for children 6-10 years of age. Summer Fun is offered through July and August and parents/guardians can sign their children up for whichever weeks fit their summer schedules the best. Registration is just $35-40 per week and information about the specific activities for each week is made available the last week in May. Registration is held the first week in June. Extreme Adventures is an adventure based program for older youth from 10-16 years of age and features several outdoor, adventure based activities through July and August.

Activities in the past have included paintball, hiking, biking, science camp, overnight campouts, canoeing, painting, photography, and even Zumba classes! Sign up for your favorite activities and join us for one exciting adventure after another!

The Town of Peace River Memorial Bench Program provides individuals, families and groups with the option of having Memorial Benches installed along Peace River’s Parks and Trails System.

Routine maintenance on these benches will be done by Town of Peace River Staff. The bench will be kept in place as long as it is serviceable, donors will be advised and given the opportunity to place a new bench in its place, under the terms and conditions that are in effect at that time.

Memorial Benches available will be a standard CR-138 Victor Stanley, brown in colour. The cost of a single bench unit is $2500.00. Payment must be received before the order will be placed. The location of the bench is to be determined by the CS Department, based on the applicant’s location request and overall feasibility.

All applicants for the Memorial Bench Sponsorship Program must fill out an application form and submit it to the Community Services Department, Recreation Facilities Coordinator. ADDITIONAL SERVICES Program Guidelines:

For those who require transportation assistance, Taxi Passes are provided through the Community Services Department and are available to those individuals who fit one or more of the following categories. All applicants MUST be Town of Peace River Residents. For more information about this program, please call us at 780-624-1000.

• The plastic Taxi Card, issued to all applicants upon approval, allows the client to purchase 40 tickets (two booklets of 20 tickets) every 4 weeks • Tickets are for one time use per ride • One ticket is provided to the Taxi Driver by the client • Only one ticket can be charged or provided per ride, regardless of number of passengers.

• The Taxi Driver shall collect: • 1 signed ticket plus $2.50 cash from the client, for a taxi ride on one side of the river or • 1 signed ticket plus $5.00 cash from the client, for a taxi ride to the opposite side of the river • Clients purchase 1 booklet of 20 tickets for $15.00.

FCSS Family Fair A free event for families where participants can enjoy information booths, playing games, watching local entertainment and a free lunch.

This event is held every two years.

Active Playtime Program This program is held at the Peace River Toy Library and features facilitated parenting information and discussion opportunities for parent(s), while their children play with the many toys that are available on site.

Parade of Programs Each spring and fall we host our Parade of Programs events, where local sports, activity groups and local not-for-profit groups attend, take registrations and share information about their programming and services with the public. Parents: This is where you can sign up your children for summer programs/sports/activities all in one convenient location. Over 300 people attend this event each time it is held!

For Youth...

Roots of Empathy Program Students learn about emotional literacy (understanding and recognizing the feelings of others) and empathy while visiting with their baby “teacher” throughout the school year. This internationally recognized program has been proven to reduce levels of aggression and bullying.

Home Alone Program The Children Home Alone Safely Program teaches children who are age 10-12 years, the safety skills they need to be on their own at home for short periods of time.

Olweus Anti-Bullying Program FCSS plays an active role with the Peace Regional Anti-Bullying Committee, a group of agencies with a vested interest in the reduction of bullying in schools and in the community.

Positive Tickets Initiative This program is a partnership between FCSS, RCMP, Fire Department, and Fish and Wildlife. Local youth are rewarded in the form of a positive ticket for being ‘caught’ performing good deeds in the community.

These youth can then redeem their ticket at our local pool for one free swim.

Mental Health First Aid Workshops This workshop teaches individuals how to recognize the symptoms of mental crisis in youth, as well as how to provide the necessary supports and/or referrals to those in need.

Woman Wise Program Woman Wise is a group of young mothers between the ages of 18 and 30 who meet on a bi-weekly basis to develop and promote healthy parent/ child relationships and increase parenting skills. This group also focuses on promoting healthy families through education, positive self-care activities and a strong supportive network system. This program is provided by Peace Regional Outreach and is co-funded by Peace River FCSS. Seeing Red Adult Anger Education Program This 8 week course helps you to understand just what anger is and how to express your anger in healthy ways. You can sign up for the program yourself or be referred to the program by others.

Suicide Prevention Workshops Suicide Talk, Straight Talk and Tattered Teddies Workshops are offered on an annual basis to provide suicide prevention based information for everyone! This group of programs are offered in partnership with Alberta Health Services, Mental Health Promotions.

Information and Referral If you are looking for any information about prevention based programming, or not-for-profit programs and services, you will want to give us a call. We make it our business to know our community and all that it has to offer for support services and if we don’t know, we will find out and get back to you.

Family School Liaison Worker FCSS provides funding towards a full time Family School Liaison worker that works in some of our local Elementary Schools. This position provides students and their families with wrap-around support and links to additional local resources.

“I always had pride and fear of expressing my needs to someone other than my family. I was told by a friend to call Community Services……being a bit hesitant…. I thought to give (it) a shot…. you have no choice. A kind lady answered the phone and then transferred me to the person who helps seniors. In a flash my pride and fear went away…I was given assurance and was treated with respect….my questions were answered…..and in 2 days I received the help I needed.”

For Seniors…

Meals on Wheels Program Promoting dignity and independence for the elderly and/or those who are physically challenged by delivering nutritious meals straight to their homes.

A hot meal is delivered every Thursday evening and, if they are interested, our clients can also order frozen meals for the rest of the week. Volunteer drivers for this program are welcome and so are donations to help subsidize the cost for our seniors.

Senior’s Fair FCSS hosts an annual Senior’s Health & Wellness Fair to provide information on the various resources and programming that is available for them in the Peace Region. Much like our biannual Family Fair, the Senior’s Fair features booths where various organizations provide useful information regarding local and regional resources that directly complement the needs of our Seniors.

Service Provider for Alberta Seniors and Community Supports This program provides assistance to Seniors by explaining and assisting in the completion of forms for the various programs provided through the Alberta Government as well as completing passport application forms. These programs include, but are not limited to The Special Needs Assistance Program, Dental and Optical programs, the Residential Access Modification Program and the Alberta Seniors Benefit Program. We also offer referrals to assist in strengthening the emotional health and wellness of the individuals in the community.

Assistance with filling out applications and forms for this program is provided through our FCSS office.

Senior’s Week FCSS hosts an annual event in celebration of Senior’s Week to honour all Seniors for their positive impact on so many lives and for acting as vibrant mentors and leaders for their families, friends and their community.

Snow Shoveling Program The Seniors Snow Shoveling Program is provided through the combined efforts of the Community Services Department and the Peace River Correctional Centre. The program is intended for senior citizens who are unable to physically shovel the snow, have no financial means to have the service done and have no family or friends who are able to assist with their snow removal.

THANK YOU – Town of Peace River (FCSS), your support with Seniors Programs have been so wonderful….compassion and a voice of hope when I was at the end of what I could bear.”

Client submission Home Support Program The Home Support Program is a service provided to assist Seniors and persons with physical or mental challenges, with their daily living needs by providing light housekeeping and friendly listening services.

We tailor our program to each individual to meet the ever changing needs of each client. Referrals for this program are welcome and applications can be picked up at our office.

Volunteer Income Tax Program The Volunteer Income Tax Program is for low income Seniors and persons with disabilities. This free service provides trained volunteers to help individuals complete their income tax returns and is available for Peace River residents. This program does not complete income tax for individuals who are deceased, bankrupt, or who have any type of business, farm or rental income.

Community Development…

Newcomer Information Peace River FCSS provides useful information about the Town of Peace River through our Newcomers Welcome Package. This package is free and filled with all sorts of not-for-profit information about Peace River.

Grants to Groups Funding A number of prevention based agencies throughout Peace River work very hard to provide quality, caring, wrap-around services to those in need. Sometimes local programming is limited due to budget restrictions or other such limitations. The FCSS Grants to Groups Funding Program provides funding assistance to these groups, so that their services may remain available to the community. Applications are available in January and the deadline for submissions is in February each year.

Family and Youth Interagency Committee and Email Network This committee is an informal communication network for agencies that provide services to families and youth in the Peace Region. It is also a wonderful way to keep our non-profit agencies and the general community connected and informed about local not-for-profit events, programs and activities. FCSS Volunteer Email Network What is volunteering? Volunteering is the practice of people working on behalf of others or a particular cause without payment for their time and services. Residents of Peace River are active volunteers, giving freely of their time to fundraise, work at special events and serve as unpaid members of various boards or committees. To support and encourage volunteerism in our community, FCSS hosts a Volunteer Email Network for those who would like to be kept in the loop about local volunteering opportunities. Peace Parent Link is now visiting the Library!

Our friends at Parent Link are coming to the library to play with us! You and your children will have a blast learning new activities, playing games and connecting with other families!

Scrapbooking & Card Making Workshops Preserve your most special memories by creating your very own scrapbook or make someone smile with a homemade card.

Art Room - Basics with Linda Based on our popular Creative Camp, Art Room is for adults and older teens. Learn the basics of creating your own personal work of art. Bring a friend along with you and try something new!

Summer Youth Programs Summer Reading Program The Peace River Library is partnering with Parent Link to host the Summer Reading Program. This program is for ages 4-12, and runs one day a week through July and August. This club offers reading activities, arts and crafts, music and much more.

Regular Youth Programs Movie Nights/Film Festivals Join us for free movies, popcorn and fun! We also offer movies on PD days when there is no school. We also have a variety of Film Festivals on various themes.

Story Time This program is another great partnership program with Parent Link and is open to children 0-6 years of age. Please join us on Fridays at 10:30am up to the end of June, for this fabulously fun time! Story time takes a break over the summer and starts up again in September.

Senior Programs Bookmobile Services We bring some books on the road to various locations around town to visit with and share our books with local seniors.

Theme Parties Ages 3-8 are invited to come out and enjoy games, activities and some treats at our monthly Theme Parties! Each month has a different theme and is catered to a different age group. Register early to avoid missing out.

Adult Programs Craft Corner Let the fun begin! Join us for some adult crafting fun and socializing!

Teens are also welcome to attend with an adult. This activity is a wonderful relaxed atmosphere in which to meet and socialize with friends and meet new people.

TRAC and TAL Card Soon your local library card will be good at almost every public library in the province without the need to get a new barcode everywhere you go.

Want to return the books that you borrowed elsewhere, just bring them back to your local library and the books will be sent back to the library that you originally borrowed them from, without you having to drive back and return them yourself! Your community has access to these services because your Municipality is a member of the Peace Library System.

Do you want to find reliable information on a topic or even learn a new skill or language? All you need is a computer, your library barcode and a PIN. Find “e-resources” on a variety of topics, including business, health, genealogy, home improvement and auto repair. Audio books and eBooks can also be downloaded by just a click of your mouse! To learn more about these resources, you can attend a Tech Series Class.

Press Display Over 2000 digital newspapers and magazines online. Just visit our website and look for the Press Display information on our website banner.

Art Gallery Local artists and or groups can use the Art Gallery to display items of interest for the community. This space features exhibits that rotate monthly through the year and feature works from local and regional artists. The space is proving to be very popular and is already booked into 2015. Come in or call us to arrange a show for 2015-2016.

MANGO! (Online Language Learning Program) Mango Languages will help you learn a new language or practice your English. Just click on “Mango” in the e-Resource list and select the login for Peace. Set up your account and start learning. You can even learn a new language while you are on your next travel adventure!

Global Road Warrior Are you a traveler? Do you like to see what a location has to offer so that you can plan out your trip?

Click on the Global Road Warrior link on our website and you will find information on over 175 countries.

Viewpoint Series The library is proud to partner with Cinema Politica on the Viewpoint Series where documentaries that are often difficult for people in the region to access, are shown. The purpose of these films is to promote discussion and generate an exchange of ideas surrounding social, environmental, economic and/or cultural issues.

Donations are encouraged but no one is turned away. All funds go toward screening costs as well as local organizing efforts committed to social change.
