FAMILY CAREGIVING

My mom and I often talk about how she feels about getting older. “You never go backwards,” my mom says. “As depressing as my physical limitations are, the worst part about getting older for me is how I feel about myself. I’m no longer the camp leader, the chief cook and bottle washer, the nurse. Along the way, I’ve lost myself in the journey that has taken so much of who I was and who I am. I feel down, and get upset and frustrated. I don’t want to be a burden to my kids.”

It’s very hard to watch a parent age because we still need them. We don’t want to take care of them; we want them to continue taking care of us! Over time, though, there are more things we notice that become an adjustment for the whole family. Our parent can hardly walk. They can’t hear. They become incontinent. All while we just want to continue being their children.

The reality isn’t something most of us are ready or willing to face. Part of the

problem is we oftentimes feel like we’re alone, entering the next phase of our lives too quickly. Along with that is the feeling of a burden we suddenly feel obligated to take on in its entirety. We all get frustrated, lose patience, and feel sad. At times, it shows. Then come the guilt and tears.

But we have to stop and remember that their frustration and sadness is worse for them than us, recognizing their feeling of loss in independence and

self-worth as they have more difficulty with self-care. It’s also easy to forget that as we take on more roles in caring for a loved one, though they appreciate the time and effort, they don’t want to make our lives harder. They also wish

they could continue taking care of us until they pass.

Often making it more difficult for both parties in addition to declining physical health is declining cognitive ability.

Our parent can hardly walk. They can’t hear.

They become incontinent. All while we just want to continue being their children.

With my mother, we’re grateful knowing that she still has a pretty sharp mind and knows who we are because we know some are not so fortunate. For those that aren’t so fortunate, it’s important to find resources and options that help alleviate some of the pressure we put on ourselves.

My three siblings and I rotate weekends with my mother, and it’s hard not to show our frustration and lose our patience; we feel like the worst kids in the world when admitting it. But now our mom also has a caregiver she loves, which helps all of us and makes her feel good not having her kids help with her personal care in the mornings.

This phase of our lives as caregivers isn’t going to last forever, and we also try to remember that she won’t be here forever. Embrace the good times and the shared moments. We need to slow down and enjoy what time is left, especially when we’re acting as caregivers.

THE LIFE AHEAD

“Living in one’s home as long as possible is merely an aspiration, not a meaningful plan for aging.” Fred Ross, member of Sharing Active Independent Lives (SAIL), has offered this perspective to friends and family in conversation over the years. With a significant portion of the aging population expressing the desire to stay in their own home or seeing it as their only option, having a meaningful plan to make it possible becomes even more critical. And while finances may be the component that most often comes to the forefront of the conversation, creating a support system to meet evolving needs over time is equally as important.

Over the past decade, varying studies have tallied anywhere from a 25 to 65 percent increase in the number of older adults who report they prefer or plan to stay in their own homes. The pandemic escalated the conversation, and governors in nearly every state announced new investments in senior care to better support their state’s older adults. In February 2021, Governor Tony Evers announced his 2021-2023 budget would include major investments in childcare, caregiving for aging and older adults, and support for individuals with disabilities. Also it would ensure high-quality care for Wisconsin’s most vulnerable residents with emphasis placed on family

caregivers, who are often an integral part of a plan to age in place.

Safety SAIL takes a holistic approach to supporting plans for sustaining active and independent lives at a comfortable level for its members at each stage of their lives. Several years ago, Betty was walking at West Towne Mall with her friend Lois. Betty’s husband passed away a few years earlier, so she and another nearby friend agreed to check in with each other every day. Betty’s friend recently passed, so Lois encouraged her to become a SAIL member to take advantage of the daily automated check-in system, Rise and Shine. If

ESSENTIAL PREPARATION | 27 Betty doesn’t call in each morning, someone from SAIL checks on her. “My children were especially happy to know that this was available,” says Betty.

“It was reassuring.”

Support in the Home In addition to Rise and Shine, a prescreened list of service providers has been extremely important to Betty. “I have more confidence when hiring someone to assist with things I need around the house. SAIL wouldn’t allow someone I can’t trust into my home.”

SAIL service providers agree to multiple background checks, provide annual proof of insurance, and show a genuine interest in serving seniors by participating in an orientation program.

Betty has enlisted the help of several service providers over the years. “My housekeeper is wonderful and really has become a good friend. My handyman takes care of snow removal and cutting the grass. When something else comes up around the house, he’s always willing to help.”

Evolving Needs “With my laundry located in the basement, I started looking into a stair lift to reassure me and my children,” says Betty. “I got an estimate for a brand-new stair lift from a SAIL service provider, and it was quite expensive.

While I was considering this, SAIL received a call from someone who was moving and wanted to get rid of a similar lift. SAIL helped to arrange with the service provider to have that donated lift installed in my home at a

fraction of the original cost. I only wish I had gotten this done sooner.”

Volunteer Support Many older adults, especially those early in retirement, find fulfillment volunteering for others. SAIL is built on a pay it forward model—volunteering now knowing that someone else will be there to volunteer for you when you need a helping hand. “One of the best parts of the pandemic was when SAIL arranged to have meals delivered for Thanksgiving and Christmas,” says Betty. “I especially enjoyed the friendly volunteers who came to deliver them.”

Planning for Success

most organizations, SAIL relied on Zoom to keep people connected—from speakers to monthly social hours and regular calls from other SAIL members.

A SAIL membership provides peace of mind and access to resources to assist in turning the goal of aging in place into a reality.

North of Madison, explore some wonderful outdoor recreation in the Baraboo area. If you’re into kayaking, canoeing, fishing, or any other river fun, many boat launches on the Baraboo River keep accessibility in mind. It’s perfect to take in the scenery, get in some exercise, and enjoy some great spots for birdwatching.

Speaking of birds, you can also check out the International Crane Foundation while in Baraboo. The Foundation is the only place in the world where you can see all 15 species of cranes. Enjoy a guided tour of the world’s cranes, take a hike on the nature trails, and browse nature-themed items from around the world in the gift shop. The Foundation recently reopened after a

The Wisconsin Dells is also a great spot not to be overlooked. For many, the Dells seems like a place for waterparks and kids, and for good reason since it’s the Waterpark Capital of the World. But it has so much more to offer families and adults, like the Wisconsin Opry, where you can experience shows with a mix of country, sing-alongs, and interactive audience participation. It’s a night of wonderment at the Rick Wilcox Magic Theater watching master illusionists Rick and Susan Wilcox astound and amaze. For the traditionalist, the Palace Theater is a state-of-the-art destination showcasing classic Broadway musicals as well as bringing many favorite Disney classics to life.

Retirees Help Give

ANIMALS A NEW START A friendly, tan-colored dog jumped out of his kennel as Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) volunteer Ken Knudson took him outside for a morning walk.

Once inside one of the fenced-in yards, the dog stretched, sniffed the grass, and seemed to savor his time outdoors.

Ken seemed to enjoy the moment just as much as the dog.

“I just love spending time with the animals,” says Ken, 72, who started volunteering at the shelter seven years ago following a four-decade career at Sub-Zero in Madison. Ken’s volunteer responsibilities include dog care, washing dishes, doing laundry, and cleaning the kitchen area. He volunteers

twice a week for two-hour shifts. “It’s nice to hang out with animals that don’t expect anything of you,” says Ken. “Plus, the other volunteers are a great bunch too. It’s a great gig.”

It’s a common experience for many retired people—after decades of fighting rush hour traffic and putting in pressure-filled days at work, retirees suddenly find themselves with more free time. Using that newfound downtime volunteering can be a great way to help the community and support a good cause.

“At DCHS, our volunteers know they are impacting the lives of companion

or wild animals with their volunteer support regardless of their position,” says Patty Zehl, DCHS volunteer coordinator. “Making a difference is a main reason for both staff and volunteers in choosing DCHS.” According to Patty, volunteers typically work one shift of two or three hours per week, but retirees often contribute two or three shifts a week and work multiple roles at the shelter. These donated hours are crucial for DCHS, which receives no governmental funding as a nonprofit.

The shelter is mostly funded by donations from community members.

The work of nearly 700 volunteers keeps the organization moving forward. More

For volunteer Marina Haan, a 74-yearold former Milwaukee native, the draw to DCHS goes all the way back to her childhood. “My mother was crazy about pets,” she says. “You name it, we had it: garter snakes, fish, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, dogs, and cats.”

So, after retiring from CUNA Mutual Group in 2001, she started to volunteer at the shelter, where she takes on a number of tasks. She sorts through donated items, such as towels, linens, cat-scratching trees, pillows, and collars. During COVID-19, she has worked from home matching reports to reunite lost animals with their owners.

Recently, she began work in the adoption center, putting information on transferred animals in the shelter’s database.

Marina works one or two shifts a week at the shelter. She finds the experience very rewarding and an opportunity to learn new things. “For a lot of retired people, they feel like they are no longer a functioning, contributing member of the community,” she says. “I appreciate how much people love animals—what they mean to people and how important they are. It really has kept my outlook fresh. It’s just really added a lot to my life.”

Jan Kinar, a retired civil engineer at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, has donated her time to the shelter for five and a half years. Her primary jobs involve cats, everything from giving snuggles to cleaning out their cages.

“The staff works so hard at the shelter.

It’s a nice place to work because we love animals so much.”

“I’ve always been a feline friend,” she says. “I clean cages the cats are in, and I’ve learned to clean around them.

Of course, you always have a cat that wants to become very involved with the cleaning process, and they’re a little more of a challenge.”

Staying active as you age means more independence and a higher quality of life. Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) offers a wide range of fitness and recreational opportunities for adults age 50+. More than 3,000 participants enroll annually in core and balance classes, pure strength classes, tai chi, yoga, and many more year-round.

MSCR provides classes for every challenge level, from Chair Based Fitness and Gentle Yoga to Classic Cardio and Functional Fitness. Classes are held at multiple indoor and outdoor locations all over Madison as well as virtually, so customers can choose their comfort level.

adults healthy, happy, and engaged.

Many of our participants have formed new friendships in our classes and need that personal connection. We are proud to support overall well-being and make a difference.”

The team has more than 20 instructors. Most of these instructors are certified and career fitness professionals. They are dedicated to staying current on fitness and safety certification and training. The classes offer an opportunity to learn, interact with other participants, and gain some movement skills that are necessary for a healthy life down the road.

In addition, the Goodman Rotary program provides several unique educational opportunities held in partnership with the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The UW–Madison School of Nursing co-hosts a class called Brain and Body Fitness, and the School of Pharmacy co-hosts an informative class called Healthy Living to Prevent Diabetes. These types of educational offerings are important pieces of the rich community connections that the program strives for.

Jean says the addition of virtual classes has added an element of accessibility that won’t go away any time soon. “We prefer to see people’s smiling faces, but until this health crisis stabilizes, virtual options are the only option for some people.” Some people take both types of classes, in person and virtual.

Feedback continues to be really positive. One participant says, “I love having this [virtual] class with this instructor as an option. It is a big help in keeping up with life at an older age!”

Directions are very clear. Information provided in class applies in practical ways to movement in daily life. I

Aqua fitness classes are also popular with MSCR clientele. These classes were on hold, and staff are excited to bring them back this fall. Aqua exercise can be gentle and soothing for those experiencing arthritis and similar ailments.

MSCR Goodman Rotary also offers fun and interesting workshops that include historic walking tours, cycling, paddling, orienteering, snowshoeing, and more. These give older adults an opportunity to try something new in a welcoming environment. Learning a new skill is often the impetus to try other things in the community or other things that MSCR offers.

The MSCR Arts and Enrichment program is an attraction that people find fits the bill in other areas of their creative lives: knitting, painting, and pottery. These MSCR offerings provide recreational arts opportunities across a wide range of ages.

PALLIATIVE CARE A specialized area of healthcare that focuses on relieving and preventing the suffering of patients. Unlike hospice care, palliative medicine is appropriate for patients in all stages, including those undergoing treatment for curable illnesses and those living with chronic diseases, as well as patients who are nearing the end of life. Adjusting TO VISION LOSS

It took a visit from her children to make Betty Zajicek realize how dark it was in her apartment. Betty was diagnosed with macular degeneration, and didn’t realize how large of an impact the lack of light had on her independence.

A certified vision rehabilitation therapist provided lighting recommendations that made a big difference. “The LED lights make it a lot brighter in the apartment,” says Betty. “Before if I spilled something, I could not see that I spilled it. I would end up stepping in it

or tracking it around. Now I can see well enough to clean up the mess.”

Betty is not alone when it comes to adjusting to age-related vision loss.

According to Family Caregiver Alliance, nearly 3.5 million Americans age 40+ have some degree of vision loss, and this number is expected to double in the next few decades as baby boomers grow older.

Most people with age-related vision loss experience partial loss. Eye

diseases, such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, can have a significant impact on functional abilities and quality of life. Finding new ways to accomplish daily tasks as vision changes occur can lead to significant improvements in quality of life.

Vision Rehabilitation A vision rehabilitation therapist can address vision-loss challenges. They’ll visit home, work, or school, asking questions to determine the impact of

vision loss on daily activities. They’ll recommend potential solutions, provide instructions on using adaptive skills and assistive devices, introduce new approaches to common tasks, and present suggestions for a safe environment.

Vision rehabilitation services are provided in Dane, Sauk, Richland, Grant, Lafayette, and Iowa Counties through the Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services Office for the Blind and Visually Impaired (OBVI) provides one-on-one rehabilitation services throughout the state. Therapists work to understand a person’s vision function to help them achieve their goals and, ultimately, their independence. People who have worked with a vision rehabilitation therapist improve their quality of life by regaining functional abilities, improving reading and distance vision, and using low-vision devices.

As an example, Betty loves to cook and bake, but her vision loss made it difficult for her to read recipes.

After finding some of the best handheld magnifiers available, she could bake again and participate in social activities.

“We have potlucks here once a month,” Betty says. “I always make something for that.” Betty also signed up for the talking book program from the Wisconsin Talking Book and Braille Library and learned about adaptive products with large bold print, such as a large-print address book, a large-print wall calendar, and pens that write in big bold lines.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends individuals age 65+ get a dilated medical eye exam every year or two, or as recommended by their ophthalmologist.

Seven Dimensions of Wellness AND THEIR IMPORTANCE TO OLDER ADULTS

Wellness is a broad, all-encompassing term that falls within a number of categories in everyday life. A framework known as the Seven Dimensions of Wellness breaks individual health into spiritual, physical, emotional, career, intellectual, environmental, and social components.

Through each stage, the Seven Dimensions of Wellness play an important role in achieving a

fulfilling life. This is especially true for older adults, where several of the dimensions play a fundamental part of living a fulfilling life post-retirement.

“All seven of the dimensions of wellness are important for our entire community,” says Rob Breidenbach, regional wellness director with Oak Park Place. Rob singled out three specific dimensions as especially

beneficial to older adults: physical, emotional, and social.

The Emotional Dimension It’s no secret the pandemic has been a challenging time for people of all ages, but this has been especially true for older adults, who are shown to be particularly vulnerable. While physical-distancing measures continue to be an important safeguard, venues such as Oak Park Place

exercise classes that encourage practical level of physical activity.

“Our emotional dimension is addressed through different educational pieces that we provide by either speaking to our expertise to the residents or hiring out and getting other people to come in and speak specifically about the topic at hand,” says Rob. “A lot of times we delve into stress, which is especially important for this demographic given COVID-19’s impact.”

“We address our physical dimension by having routinely scheduled exercise classes for our residents to partake in,” explains Rob. “We cover different forms of yoga to improve flexibility, and strength training to help with lower back, joint issues, and body fatigue. We really focus a lot on balance training to try eliminating falls, or at least lessen the devastating impact a fall can have.”

Thoughts play a crucial part of our quality of life, regardless of age. At Oak Park Place, Rob says staff members strive to create an environment that promotes positivity through classes, activities, and simple gestures.

“We discuss how negativity can sometimes run our decision-making processes,” says Rob. “That’s a key thing that we’re focused on. We inject humor into anything we try to do. It can be thrown into our classes, our demonstrations, or even just through the halls when we see residents play cards or foosball or any of the other games we have. We’ll go over and join them so we can help spark up conversations. It makes it more homelike.”

The Physical Dimension Throughout life, establishing a regular workout routine has proven beneficial in a number of ways. This is no exception at Oak Park Place, as residents are invited to partake in age- and skill-appropriate

The impact exercise has on the body is obvious, but Rob points out the benefits of mobility reap rewards in other ways as well. “It’s also incredibly mentally rewarding,” says Rob. “It helps ease some of the effects of depression and anxiety by releasing feel-good endorphins into the brain. It has a big impact on the cycle of negative thoughts and negative feelings that people can get into—especially in this day and age with what people are going through.”

The Social Dimension While the pandemic has necessitated adjustments, Rob says social activities remain an important part of day-to-day life at Oak Park Place. This is evidenced through such programs as trivia nights; today-in-history events; and an initiative known as Friday Flings that gives residents the opportunity to enjoy music, comedians, and storytelling as a community.

“We do what we can to create a safe and engaging atmosphere for all of our residents,” says Rob. “Our staff continues to wear masks all the time, even though everyone here is vaccinated. Even with that, we practice our social distancing at different events.”

Some of the other programs encouraging social interaction include a regular Walking Wednesdays activity and outdoor gatherings on Oak Park Place’s grounds, which Rob says are especially beneficial to the memorycare residents.

“We have a beautiful outdoor garden area that features a fountain with nice sounds of the water,” says Rob. “It gets lots of sunshine and has a great variety of trees. The residents just love being out there.”

Overall wellness isn’t just important during the pandemic. Having a strong foundation for each dimension provides a much more rewarding and fulfilling life regardless of what stage you’re experiencing and when. Thanks to thoughtful senior care facilities, many seniors are getting the most out of their later stages.

Maintaining INDEPENDENCE

Independence is one of our most treasured privileges, and one of the greatest fears for older adults is the loss of that freedom. Independence comes in a variety of ways and is integral to maintaining autonomy with regard to lifestyle, health, and well-being. As we age, independence may change or look different, but it plays an even more vital role in healthy aging.

Much of the research done on healthy and successful aging focuses heavily on the role of physical health (biomedical model) because there’s a strong correlation between the two.

In an article titled “Successful Aging: Advancing the Science of Physical Independence in Older Adults,” Florida researchers determined successful aging is largely represented by good health, independence, and high levels of cognitive and physical functioning, with lifestyle and psychosocial factors also being contributing factors.

The National Institute on Aging studies different ways to promote healthy lifestyles for older adults.

Some suggestions to maintain independence include exercise, physical activity, and good nutrition.

Increased physical activity reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, and fall-related injuries. It’s important to set realistic goals and think through exercise plans to ensure safety. There are resources, such as senior centers, community centers, and fitness facilities that offer group exercise for older adults, which also provide wonderful opportunities for socialization.

Daily nutritious meals are extremely important, but older adults often

experience a decreased sense of smell or taste, teeth issues, or mental health concerns, consequently impacting their nutritional intake. It’s also important to create a plan with a doctor to address any nutritional deficiencies that might negatively impact health and wellbeing. The 12 Senior Focal Points in Dane County, like NewBridge in the city of Madison, are great resources to connect with community dining sites or Meals on Wheels to obtain nutritious meals and to discover a variety of health, social, and recreational programs.

The good news is that everyone, no matter what age, can take steps to improve and maintain good health, starting with a positive outlook and the belief that you can make a change. According to the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging, having a positive perception regarding aging can help older adults live an average of seven and a half years longer than those who do not. By adding the management of ongoing health problems, avoiding injuries, exercising regularly by walking or doing chair-based exercise to gradually build up strength and stamina, and getting proper daily nutrition, you’ll have hit the key factors in maintaining independence.
