The first Africans were brought to Jamestown, Virginia by European setllers and exponentially grew the slave poppulation within years. By 1825, the United States had a quater of blacks in its population.

The Civil War between the Confederacy and the Union began on April 12, 1861. By the end of the war in 1865, nearly 620, 000 men were killed. On December 18, 1865, slaves in Georgia were officially freed. A week later, the KKK formed in Pulaski, Tennesse.

The Ku Klux Klan had extended into almost every southern state by the 1870s and became a vehicle for white southern resistance. The members waged an underground campaign of intimidation and violence directed at white and Black Republican leaders

The Civil Rights Movement was an organized effort by black Americans to end racial discrimination and gain equal rights under the law. Significant leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and the Freedom Riders sparked protests.

The Confederate carving on Stone Mountain was offically complete. The carving, begun with aid from the Ku Klux Klan as a memorial to the “Lost Cause of the Confederacy, depicts three Confederate leaders: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson on horses.

In July 2013, the BLM movement began with the use of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin in February 2012. This summer of 2020, the death of George Floyd by the hands of a police officer sparked a series of protests on police brutality & systemic injustice.

1800s: Lynches SITE PLAN

ENGRAVING TRUTH CENTER The social history of white supremacy and social injustices of black and brown people has slowly corroded the true meaning of a democracy. From personal experience, Stone Mountain is a beautiful, serene natural landmark with a history that is richer than its Confederate Memorial carving. The goal of this project is to reconnect Stone Mountain to nature by concentrating on the natural elements of the Park. Rather being the largest symbol of white supremacy, it should be a grand remembrance for the lives lost fighting for diversity, racial equity and social justice. In years to come, the confederate memorial will be barely recognizable, and a new representation of truth will be engraved with the names of those struggle against social justice.
