Dear Readers, Just a quick Hello to say thank you to all the supporters of TR11 Local Community Magazine. June is here and with it comes more TR11 magazines printed than ever before. Testimonial: Andy McNair, Building and Maintenance, who has been advertising for at least 12 months says “I get at least 70% of my work via TR11 Magazine, the rest is word of mouth and recommendations. It’s not expensive to advertise and I get at least 3-‐4 phone calls a week regarding new work ranging from really small jobs to big extensions. It’s the only place I advertise now, there is no need to go anywhere else.” Have a great month! Hayley x

Love wildlife? Love gardening? Dig worms! Riverford’s Big Worm Dig 2014 Organic farm launches citizen science project to boost our understanding of UK earthworms
National vegbox scheme Riverford is hoping to get as many people as possible to take part in
its Big Worm Dig this summer and surveying earthworms. Using the handy booklet available through their website or your local Riverford veg team, simply dig a small patch of soil,
identify the worms you find with their easy key and upload results to the Big Worm Dig
website. There’s even a clever trick with mustard powder that can help you bring worms to the surface – kids love it!
“They may not be the most appealing of creatures, but we really need worms,” explains Steve
Allen, who delivers Riverford vegboxes to families in Cornwall. “They are like mini tractors,
loosening up the soil to allow air and water to penetrate. They also convert soil nutrients into a form that plants can use more readily, which is why we love them at Riverford; they help look after our veg!”
Working with earthworm experts Dr Kevin Butt and Dr Chris Lowe from the University of Central Lancashire, Riverford hopes to collate survey results from all over the country.
“Earthworms are incredibly important in soil ecology, but very little is known about the
British earthworm population,” says Dr Butt. “We’re excited to see what the survey might reveal, and really pleased to be involved in the project.”
SCAN HERE!
The survey results will be evaluated in August, with final results revealed in September after scientific analysis.
Much of the UK’s wildlife depends on worms as a source of protein, including birds, badgers,
hedgehogs, moles and foxes, so it’s not just veg fans who
*
benefit from their presence. Though widespread, very
little is known about the ecology of earthworms, so the
aim of this survey is to better equip scientists to monitor the wellbeing of the UK population.

Cadet Recognised by National Award Scheme
14
Cadet Lance Corporal Jane from Falmouth Platoon, has been working hard over th the last year to achieve a nationally recognised award. On Sunday 27 April, he was awarded a Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award after completing a host of activities which has seen him complete ceremonial drill through to Junior Cadet Instructors Cardre (JCIC). Lance Corporal Jane has been in the cadets since he was Feb 2011 and has spent 4 years learning life skills such as first aid and navigation as well as meeting new friends and going on camps across England and Wales. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is a fantastic way for cadets to boost their CV and to demonstrate the skills they learn in cadets to future employers. Captain Demelza Stevenson, Training Officer for Gibraltar Company, said “I am so proud that Lance Corporal Jane has achieved this, it is hard work and a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm he displays.” If you would like to help the young people of Cornwall learn new skills, develop self confidence and find new friends please register interest at www.armycadets.com or to go along to your local detachment. If you have any questions, please call Army Cadets Headquarters on 01208 78183 or visit http://armycadets.com/county/cornwall-‐acf/ LCpl Jane receives his Silver Duke of Edinburgh from Colonel Donnithorne in front of Cornwall Army Cadets at a recent training weekend held at RAF St Mawgan. For action and adventure, fun and friendship, the Army Cadet Force is hard to beat. With around 46,000 cadets (aged 12-‐18) and 8,500 adult volunteers in 1,700 locations in every corner of the United Kingdom, the ACF is one of the country’s largest voluntary youth organisations. It is also one of the oldest and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010. We welcome boys and girls from the age of 12 (and in at least year eight at school), of all abilities and backgrounds, and through a broad range of exciting, challenging, educational and adventurous activities, help them develop physically, mentally and socially. Some of our activities have a military theme, others have more of a community focus. Combining military and community activities in this way enables us to offer our 45,000 young people a unique blend of personal development opportunities, all designed to promote fun and friendship while also helping them prepare for success in their chosen path in life, whatever that might turn out to be. The Army Cadet Force is a national voluntary youth organisation. It is sponsored by the Army and provides challenging military, adventurous and community activities. Its aim is to inspire young people to achieve success in life with a spirit of service to the Queen, their Country and their local community, and to develop in them the qualities of a good citizen. This is achieved by: • Providing progressive cadet training, often of a challenging and exciting nature, to foster confidence, self reliance, initiative, loyalty and a sense of service to other people • Encouraging the development of personal powers of practical leadership and the ability to work successfully as a member of a team • Stimulating an interest in the Army, its achievements, skills and values • Advising and preparing those considering a career in the Services or with the Reserve Forces. www.armycadets.com or to go along to your local detachment. Imagine not having to worry about shaving your legs, bikini or underarms or having painful waxing and electrolysis. Perhaps you suffer with ingrowing hairs and sore shaving rash. Now there is a painless and needle-‐free solution with Phaser IPL Permanent Hair Reduction. Your qualified therapist simply cools your skin with an iced roller and places the IPL waveguide to treat exactly where needed. We can treat any area of the face and body, for men and women and it is great for large areas of hair removal such as the legs, underarms, bikini, abdomen, chest or back. Treatments are relatively quick and simple too and there is no pain or discomfort, the sensation is best described as a short sharp flick on the skin with a little bit of warmth which goes very quickly. How do I know if it’s suitable for me? Your therapist will go through a full consultation to ensure that IPL is the best treatment for you. How many treatments will I need? This varies from person to person and can depend on your skin type, the treatment area and level of hair growth you have. Our experience shows that a minimum of six treatments are usually required. How often can I have treatment? Treatments are usually carried out every 4 weeks. How soon will I see results? Most clients notice a gradual thinning and reduction of the hair growth after their first few treatments and this continues as their treatments progress. So provided that you are not a sun worshipper (IPL and suntans don’t mix!) you can take advantage of our fantastic IPL SUMMER SALE! Book your first treatment in June to get your first three treatments half price with Antoinette! Don’t miss out, call Lizzy now to book your FREE CONSULTATION on 01326 389322

At Trescobeas Surgery we recently said goodbye to our Senior Partner, Dr Philip Burnett, who retired after many years. Dr Burnett was hugely popular and has expressed his thanks to those who sent him farewell messages and gifts. We have now recruited a replacement partner; Dr Chris Ireland joins us from the beginning of June. Currently with the Acute GP service, Dr Ireland has had over 6 years’ experience working in hospital and clinical settings throughout Cornwall and in New Zealand. Living locally with a young family, Dr Ireland enjoys surfing, basketball and rock climbing in what little spare time he has. Chris joins a thriving practice. In the past year over 500 more patients have joined our list, many citing family and friend recommendations and our good reputation. We continually strive to improve our service; recently with help from our Friends group we introduced point of care INR testing, improved call handling, changed our website to make it more user friendly and teamed up with The Core Health and Fitness Centre to provide high quality, cheap and convenient fitness for all our patients. Most importantly we are doing this without losing sight of what is most important and that is access to a GP or Nurse. To illustrate I have two Myth busters. The first is “I can never get through to my GP” Our Response: Over the last month we answered over 300 calls a day. 90% were answered within 2 minutes (95% before 1030). Average waiting time was 45 seconds!!! The Second is: “I can never get an appointment with a Doctor” Our Response: Non Urgent Requests – 90% dealt with on the day – Average wait 2.5 hours. All clinically urgent requests are dealt with on the day
