It was a silly idea, it was never meant to actually happen… It was a quiet Saturday afternoon in October 2004. I was working as a team leader in crisis accommodation in Camborne, working with homeless people. We were helping people with a range of problems including: drug, alcohol and mental health as well as homelessness. It was interesting work, at times challenging and very rewarding. But I was ready for a change and a new challenge. This particular Saturday it was quiet, and I was chatting to my colleague and friend Stu. The conversation turned to what we could be doing if we weren’t working there. Stu had an idea about opening a milkshake bar selling shakes made by blending up Mars bars, Skittles, Oreos, Extra Strong Mints and anything else you can think of. It was a fun conversation, it was not a serious idea. But for some reason the idea refused to go away. I started to look at shops to rent in several towns around Cornwall, Falmouth looked like a good place because of all the university students. I spent a lot of time and late night planning and testing lots and lots of milkshake recipes. On Monday 11 July 2005 Great Shakes! opened. I think many people were surprised at my career move, including myself. It’s strange, it had actually happened, that silly idea had turned in to Great Shakes! That was ten years ago, since then I have expanded our range by adding 100% Fruit Smoothies, Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Lush Slush, Donuts, Pick+Mix etc. So next time you have a silly idea, don’t dismiss it too quickly, you never know where it might lead. – Steve P.S. No, I didn’t steal the idea from Stu, he carried on working with the homeless and was happy for me to use the milkshake bar idea.

Next Meeting with Roger Wyatt 30th May not 2nd May as originally planned. Howard Peskett gave us an insightful talk entitled “Evidence for the Resurrection” Atheists disbelieve that Jesus rose from the dead; they say the Bible is a myth. Is it a story made up by the Gospel writers? Crucifixion was horrific, the Romans had crucified thousands. Think how horrifying it must be to see someone you love being nailed to a cross to die. On the cross, God was a sacrifice that took on all the sin of the world so that we, who find it too difficult to be good, may not stand in judgement if we believe. The Gospel narratives were written down just a few years after the resurrection, which is almost unique in historical writing. People were still alive who had seen and spoken to Jesus. The events were recorded by eyewitnesses, which naturally contain inconsistencies. The resurrected Jesus was seen by 500 people at one time - too many to be a hallucination. It is an historical fact that Jesus died and was buried in a tomb, which was empty on the third day. It was the correct tomb (who could forget!). The grave clothes were neatly folded. Grave robbers would leave signs. There was a guard on the tomb anyway. Women were the first eyewitnesses. This was unprecedented in such paternalistic society. The disciples were changed men. At the time of the crucifixion they hid away, scared that they too might die. Having seen their risen Lord they became WITNESSES OF THE RESURRECTION. Jesus walked with them ate food and promised never to leave them and they believed him. So the Gospels are not the biography of someone dead and gone. Being a Christian is not about just trying lead a good life keeping the rules and observing all sorts of Christian duties, it is very difficult because we are never good enough. As Christians it is about living in the life of the living Lord Jesus and he living in us. Becoming people whose lives would not make sense if he did not exist. The resurrection establishes and confirms certain key Christian beliefs: 1. Jesus is the Son of God as he said. 2. It vindicates all his words and works. 3. He has all authority in heaven and earth, who has promised to be with me always, everywhere until the end of time. 4. It reassures us that he always lives to make intercession for us. He will save me to the uttermost. 5. It gives an assurance that there will indeed be a world-ending judgement. 6. It underlies the Christian belief in the resurrection of the body. I will wake up from death.

New Market Chairman for Truro and Falmouth
Truro Farmers Market, which is entering its 18th year, has announced the appointment of a new Chairman to oversee the development of the popular weekly markets, which take place in both Truro and Falmouth.
Mr Kim Courtauld of Vicarage Farm has taken over at the head of a strengthened committee, which is dedicated to maintaining the quality and diversity of local food and craft available at market.
Kim studied at agricultural college in Scotland and worked in rural areas across the UK as a farmer and gamekeeper; he has farmed at Wendron near Helston for 16 years and has been selling eggs, lamb, beef and turkey at various markets across Cornwall since 2000.
The committee will also be enhanced by the edition of new member Graham Bradshaw of Cornish Sea Salt, who will provide event management expertise to the group.
The new Chairman began his tenure by thanking his predecessor Nigel Ekins, saying: “Nigel has given the market many long years of service, and understands how it operates better than anyone. As he is continuing on the committee I will be turning to him regularly for help and advice.”
Kim is positive about the future of the market, despite the challenges from out-‐of-‐town stores and online shopping.
He explained: “Farmers markets have gone through a cycle – support tailed off a little while ago but it has now returned with renewed vigour. We have a very loyal following and it’s particularly good to see the younger generation, including students in Falmouth, shopping at market regularly.”
The market showcases a larger range of local artisan manufacturers than ever before – many of whom have a very professional approach to branding and marketing -‐ however the committee are still keen to hang on to the genuine farmers who grow great quality fruit and vegetables and rear animals on non-‐intensive farms.
With numbers of applications growing, the market maintains strict criteria to ensure that food miles are low and quality is high, and that a diverse selection of produce is on offer.
Kim says: “We are keen to hear from potential traders and are interested in new ideas. The market has always been a great incubator for fledgling food, drink and craft projects and we want to continue to offer a platform for budding entrepreneurs to get in front of local consumers.”
The Farmers Market takes place every Saturday and Wednesday on Lemon Quay in Truro, and every Tuesday on The Moor in Falmouth.
Visit www.trurofarmersmarket.co.uk for more information, or follow the market on Twitter at @TruroFarmersMkt

One of South Africa’s most highly rated young chefs, Hylton Espey, is the new Chef Patron at Falmouth’s Merchants Manor seduced by the hotel’s devotion to using the finest, fresh local ingredients – and the surfing! Owner Nick Rudlin says that the capture of Hylton is proof of the hotel’s desire to become one of Cornwall’s premier destinations. “From the first moment I spoke to Hylton I knew he was the man for the job we wanted done,” commented Nick. “Like me, he’s passionate about the finest local ingredients. Like me he believes that what grows together goes together. Like me he wants a personal relationship with our producers. Unlike me he’s a great surfer!”

“I’ve been wanting to travel, but I also want a great place for my kids to grow up and the UK has always appealed as my grandparents were Irish,” said Hylton. “I grew up in Cape Town surfing, diving, fishing and exploring the mountains of False Bay. My family are all exceptional cooks, except for my dad, he is an exceptional eater. My mother, Juliana, was always an adventurous cook at home. We had influences from a variety of cultures, from British to Malay to Asian, made with fantastic local produce and – when we wanted to eat out - great local restaurants.

University didn’t really work out for me and I had to choose between becoming a wine-maker or a chef. I went to the U.S and worked in restaurants for two years to learn my trade. Now I’m wanting to find a restaurant where I can develop my own individual style and I think Merchants Manor is the place.
I love the fact that Nick knows all his suppliers and I look forward to meeting the farmers and the fishermen I’m going to be working with. With 60 covers, the restaurant is the ideal size for my style of cooking. I’m constantly experimenting with new flavours and techniques to provide unique flavour combinations with a few surprises on the plate.”

Hylton accepts that lots of customers “just want a rib-eye and chips” but is keen to introduce an element of nature inspired cuisine. His mantra is that “what grows together goes together” and he loves Merchants Manor’s devotion to using Cornish produce wherever possible.

Following in the path of his Irish ancestry, Hylton was keen on moving to the UK – but didn’t want to go to London, the first choice for many chefs. “Personally and professionally I wanted to live by the sea. I looked at the best coastal places and found Falmouth. So, when Nick called I was already sold. What’s not to like about surfing and diving? I want my kids to grow up near the sea, living a healthy lifestyle - not in a big city inhaling traffic fumes.” Hylton is married to Petronella and has two children aged five and three years old. “I’m looking forward to being able to explore the UK with my family and of course tracing back my grandparents’ roots in Ireland and picking up some Celtic cooking ideas.”
