Managing Menopause Hot flushes, low mood, irritability, poor memory, IBS and weight gain are just a few of the symptoms some women experience as they approach and go through the menopause. But there’s a lot you can do to prevent and reduce these, using natural therapies and being aware of important dietary and lifestyle factors. Taking a natural approach to the menopause is something an increasing number of women are turning to, due to evidence that HRT (hormone replacement therapy) carries with it some very serious health risks. Natural therapies can also help women withdraw from HRT. On February 13th 2016, Inspiring Health, the new natural health practice in Falmouth, is running a workshop to help women learn how to cope with the menopausal transition, in a natural, safe and effective way. This is the third in the series of very successful workshops Inspiring Health have been running since their launch in November. The Managing Menopause workshop is being held at the Inspiring Health Clinic, 17 Fish Strand Hill, Falmouth TR11 3BD, on Saturday February 13 2016, from 10am12.30pm. As the workshops are for small groups only, booking is essential. Please phone 01326 212112 or email info@inspiringhealth.org.uk to book your place.

A CORNISH JOYRIDE Summer 2015 my daughter, my son in law and myself went out in the car without any plans to where we would go -just a joy ride. We landed around the St Austell area - we went into Par market for a look around and after a coffee made our way to Charles Town on the way down the hill I noticed at the entrance to a property a tree had fallen or been cut down and the base had been carved to resemble Neptune - and a charity donation box put alongside it was so good I had to put a few coins in! FALMOUTH SPRING FLOWER SHOW

There will still be daffodils galore at next month’s Falmouth Spring Flower Show despite their early appearance in this mildest winter since 1910 when the first show was held. Falmouth daffodil grower Ron Scamp, the show’s president, says, ‘There are hundreds of daffodil varieties grown in Cornwall flowering from November to May. We will certainly not be short of entries for our 29 specialist daffodil classes.’ New for the 2016 show at the Princess Pavilion, Gyllyngdune Gardens on March 19 and 20 is a freshly designed schedule with ‘Tips for Exhibitors’ and a Family and Friends class with one option being to make a scarecrow.

Also new this year Bernadette Snow, show committee member and the Falmouth Community Life Champion for ASDA, has volunteered to visit schools and youth groups to give tips about taking part. Eleven children’s classes include planting and decorating a boot or shoe, making a flower pot person, and creating a skateboarder’s garden with a wall for spray paint art and graffiti.

12

Show secretary Renate Davie says, ‘It can be daunting entering for the first time. We hope the schedule’s tips will encourage newcomers, and tell them what our judges are looking for.’ Following the success of the Meudon Hotel, a newcomer last year, who displayed one of world’s rarest rhododendrons, gardeners from Falmouth’s other hotels and guest houses are being encouraged to join the show. With the help of Cormac’s gardeners children from Falmouth’s primary schools have potted up hundreds of Cornish Chuckles daffodils to decorate the Princess Pavilion’s bandstand. Non gardeners are invited to bring their favourite house plant, enter the floral art which includes an arrangement to look like cupcakes, or share their photographs. There are no entry fees for taking part in the show. Children under 16 get into the show for free as do all exhibitors. It’s also free entry to browse the trade stands on the Pavilion’s patio for Easter presents, food, plants and garden ornaments. A photo exhibition on the 150 year history of Cornwall’s daffodils, their growers, and their starring role in the flower show opens on March 3 to 28 in the foyer of Town Hall on the Moor. The free display th is a curtain raiser for St Piran’s Day March 5 and the Falmouth Spring Festival’s ‘Paint The Town Yellow th Day’ on March 10 when thousands of local daffodils arranged by school children brighten the town’s shop windows. For the show schedule and entry form call 01326 313658/314055, or e-‐mail falmouthflowershow@hotmail.co.uk Schools and youth groups can contact ASDA’s Bernadette Snow on 01326 378873, or e-‐mail communityfalmouth@asda.co.uk For updates see Facebook Falmouth Spring Flower Show, www.falmouth.co.uk, www.princesspavilion.co.uk

Maxwell is one of our bigger residents here at Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre Ilfracombe who came in as a stray. He is a very handsome 2 and ½ year old white and tan crossbreed. He is an affectionate boy, who doesn’t always realise his own size and will give you a big bear hug! Maxwell is still young and lots of fun. He is very active, so really enjoys going out for long walks and playing with his toys. He loves learning new tricks and will do anything for a treat. We feel that Maxwell would like to be the only pet in the home, so that he can have all the attention for himself. He has been learning to meet and greet dogs when out and about and has lots of doggie friends now, so would be more that happy to have walking companions. As he is a big bouncy boy, an adult only home, or one with older teenagers would suit him best. If you think you can give Maxwell, the loving, forever home he deserves, then please give our Canine Carers a call at our Ilfracombe Rehoming Centre on 01271 812709, we are open every day between 12noon and 4pm except Wednesday when we are open from 4.30pm until 7.30pm. CHARITY NEEDS DAFFODIL VOLUNTEERS Marie Curie is appealing for people in Cornwall and on The Isles of Scilly to 'get behind the daffodil', by volunteering to collect donations for the charity's annual Great Daffodil Appeal www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil this March. The charity needs volunteers to encourage people in the local community to give a donation and wear a daffodil pin. The money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses provide care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones at home. The appeal is now in its 30th year and has raised more than £73million since 1986. From Bude to Torpoint to Land's End, people across the country are signing up to volunteer. It's easy to sign up, whether you have taken part before or you're doing it for the first time - and families, friends and workmates can sign up to volunteer together. Caz Chivers from Truro said: "I collected for the Great Daffodil Appeal for the first time last year and loved it. So many people approach you to tell you about the support they've received from Marie Curie Nurses - it's amazing to see the difference you're making. I had a great time and made some new friends in the other collectors. It's nice to know you're helping other people." To volunteer to collect for Marie Curie and support the Great Daffodil Appeal call 01872 260500 or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil

Outstanding Teacher of the Year, Headteacher of the Year and FE Lecturer of the Year are amongst the 12 categories for the first Cornwall Teacher Awards Organisers at Cornwall Teacher Awards have announced a raft of categories for the 2016 event, which will be held at Truro Cathedral on April 15. Among the 12 categories spanning education and training across Cornwall are: School Volunteer of the Year, School Support Worker of the Year, Student Nominated Teacher of the Year, and School Governor of the Year. Lsect, publishers of ‘Schools Week' and ‘FE Week' will present the award for Headteacher of the Year. Shane Mann, managing director at Lsect said: "Outstanding teaching and learning in our schools and colleges often goes on ‘under the radar'; the Cornwall Teacher Awards is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the extremely valuable work that goes on in classrooms across the county, we're delighted to be a part of this event." Other early sponsors include Truro and Penwith College, and Kernow Education. Nikki Baron, Business Development Director at Empra Ltd, the Awards' organisers said; "Early partners and sponsors supporting this event is incredibly important to its success. This is the first Awards of its kind in Cornwall and we want as many people as possible to know about it." If you would like to see an inspirational and outstanding teacher, lecturer, headteacher or teaching assistant, school support worker or volunteer rewarded for their contribution to learning, make a nomination for the 2016 Cornwall Teacher Awards. Simply view the categories and complete the entry form online, before the deadline of Friday February 12th 2016. Visit cornwallteacherawards.org for more information and to cast your vote.
