My  dream  has  always  been  to  run  a  tennis  coaching  business  at  a  little  club  in  a  beautiful  area  with  clients  who  want  the  kids  to  be  happy  and  healthy.  I  came  to  a  cross  roads  in  my  life  five  years  ago‌  stay  in  London  and  continue  coaching  or  follow  my  dream.  I  decided  that  I  needed  to  take  the  gamble  but  where  to  go?  I  spent  a  few  months  travelling  to  possible  jobs‌.Manchester,  Bath,  Dublin,  New  York,  Seattle  and  finally  Falmouth,  on  a  sunny  Friday  morning  in  early  2012.   I  met  with  two  committee  members,  one  of  whom  is  now  my  favourite  dentist,  had  a  look  around  the  club  and  went  for  lunch.   During  lunch  I  found  out  that  the  club  had  a  handful  of  junior  members,  they  were  going  to  some  major  committee  changes  and  that  they  only  had  two  floodlit  courts  for  the  winter.   Quite  different  from  the  huge  clubs  I  was  working  at  in  London.   Another  quick  look  at  the  club  and  a  few  more  introductions  and  I  had  to  get  in  my  car  to  drive  back  to  London.   I  got  a  call  as  I  drove  through  Penryn  offering  me  the  job  and  I  instantly  accepted.   Now  could  I  make  it  work?  A  month  later,  April  2nd,  I  arrived  and  set  up  shop  at  the  Falmouth  Sports  Club  with  Budock  Vean  Hotel  and  Trebah  Gardens  both  inviting  me  to  coach  at  their  gorgeous  clubs.   A  later  development  was  St.  Michaels  Hotel  investing  in  the  Gylly  Beach  Courts  and  inviting  me  to  head  up  their  tennis  programme.  Slow  start  is  an  understatement  and  I  had  moments  of  wondering  if  I  had  made  the  wrong  decision.   The  first  summer  was  the  wettest  in  years  and  then  we  had  that  winter  storm  but  bit  by  bit  children  and  adults  arrived  and  enjoyed  what  was  on  offer.   I  had  lots  of  ideas  and  initiatives,  some  worked  and  some  fell  flat  but  over  time  it  started  to  come  together  and  I  still  have  a  few  things  left  to  try.  One  of  my  wants  on  this  new  venture  was  to  live  in  a  close  community.   Three  years  down  the  line  I  cannot  walk  through  town  without  having  to  stop  for  a  few  meaningful  chats,  I  don’t  have  to  order  coffee  anymore  whether  its  Gylly  Beach  CafĂŠ  or  Espressini  they  know  what  I  want,  it  just  arrives  as  if  by  magic  and  to  top  it  all  off  I  can  now  pronounce  Perranarworthal,  without  too  much  trouble.   Falmouth  Sports  Club  has  changed  dramatically  since  I  arrived.   We  have  a  great  team  of  volunteers  on  the  committee  who  have  been  instrumental  in  changing  how  the  club  looks  and  runs.   Three  squash  courts,  a  great  bar  and  a  new  fitness  suite  and  gym  offer  lots  of  classes.   We  now  have  4  flood  lit  tennis  courts,  a  personal  goal  since  I  arrived,  making  us  one  of  the  best  tennis  facilities  in  Cornwall.   So  have  I  gotten  what  I  was  looking  for?   I  now  have  over  a  hundred  children  playing  tennis  at  FSC  each  week.   We  have  classes  for  children  from  age  3  until  they  leave  home;  we  run  junior  social  sessions,  matches  and  fitness  classes.   Add  to  that  the  adult  classes  I  run  at  all  my  venues  and  I’m  keeping  myself  busy.   I  have  just  started  my  7.45  Club,  a  before  school  exercise  session  5  days  a  week  where  parents  drop  their  kids  with  us,  then  after  an  hour  of  physical  activity  we  drop  them  at  King  Charles  School.   Children  just  like  adults,  are  better  able  to  concentrate  after  exercise.  I  have  more  plans  to  roll  out  in  the  future  but  I  am  very  happy  I  moved  to  Falmouth.   Anyone  for  tennis?   www.falmouthtenniscompany.com    Please email hayley@tr11mag.co.uk for advertising enquiries

Ready for cosy nights in?

As the evenings – and elements – draw in, Mark Britton of South West Heating wonders whether your night storage heating has enough control to keep you warm and snug.

Here in Cornwall, our winter evenings are magical. The weather gets so wild, and there’s something special about being safely squirrelled away, cosy and snug, listening to the elements howling around outside. But for people relying on electric night storage heaters – as some people in Cornwall still do – the change in the season mightn’t be so welcome. For one thing, the need to set your heating controls a day in advance means you can find yourself having to eke out the heat to try and make it last all evening – not very relaxing. And of course night storage is a terribly inefficient way to heat a home. Every time you turn the ‘input’ dial, you can almost feel your next electricity bill grow. So it’s no surprise that right now is our busiest time of year for replacing night storage heaters with efficient ELKAtherm electric radiators from Germany. They’re perfect for making the most of the long, winter nights…without having to worry about energy costs. With instant control to within 0.5 degrees Celsius, just a little electricity is enough for an ELKAtherm radiator to quickly heat the whole room, achieving an even, cosy temperature from floor to ceiling. And there’s no need to guess how much warmth you might need in advance, or to waste your energy if you decide to go out, or spend the evening in another room. In fact, if you choose, you can even adjust the temperature without leaving your sofa, using your

laptop, tablet or mobile phone – or start things warming up while you’re on your way home – so you’re always every bit as warm as you’d like to be. As a Which? Trusted Trader, we keep in touch to ensure our customers are happy, and we love to hear how switching to ELKAtherm radiators has transformed winter evenings from a miserable prospect into something people look forward to and enjoy. Unlike oil and bottled gas heating, there’s no messy pipework to install – so we’re usually able to install the new radiators the same day, leaving everything neat, tidy and ready to warm our customer’s home that night. And with a 25-‐year guarantee, and hand-‐built German craftsmanship, we know that cosy winter evening is just the first of very many more to come. That’s a nice feeling; in fact, you might say it gives us a warm glow. For more information on ELKAtherm electric radiators, call South West Heating Solutions on 01209 714600 or visit www.southwestheatingsolutions.co.uk

Winter Skincare Advice It's more important than at any other time of the year to keep the skin healthy and nourished during the winter months. Use cream cleansers as these lift impurities and make-up without stripping the skin of all it's natural oils. These are essential for helping to protect the skin against harsher winter conditions that dry out the skin. Your lighter moisturiser which seemed fine in the summer may need replacing with something richer. Because of the cold weather and indoor heating, skin can appear dull and lack luminosity. Using a little oil, especially at night, will work it's magic while you sleep and keep the luminosity your skin had in the summer months. Warm a little in your hands for best results and apply to slightly damp skin to avoid greasiness. Using upward sweeping movements apply the oil from the neck to forehead. Massaging in this way for a couple of minutes will act as a mini facial and aid the oil to penetrate to the deepest layer of the skin, helping to restore it's natural barrier. Starting this now will strengthen and prepare your skin, making it more resistant to environmental aggressors and my tip is use extra virgin organic olive oil, the rich emollients in olive oil allow just a little to go a long way. In addition to being a natural, hypoallergenic way to moisturise skin, extra virgin olive oil has the added advantage of providing strong antioxidants, like Vitamins A and E that help repair and renew skin that has been damaged from overexposure to sun, harsher winter conditions, air pollution, and other modern-day environmental hazards – like cigarette smoke and fast food. These antioxidants have the natural ability to stimulate cells and return skin to a firmer, smoother, and healthier state. Sun damage will weaken the skin so as winter approaches the skin will deteriorate further. To keep skin in it's best condition, regular treatments will continually reconstruct the epidermis to boost moisture levels. Applying a face mask weekly will help to brighten the complexion and keep your after summer glow. To avoid loss of moisture and dryness try either of these two easy to make at home recipes; 1: Banana and butter in equal amounts mashed together and applied to cleansed skin. Leave on for ten minutes. Remove with tepid water and apply a little oil. 2: Avocado mashed with one tablespoon of olive oil. Apply to cleansed skin and leave on for ten to fifteen minutes. Remove with tepid water and apply a little oil. Finally, we are what we eat and it is essential that we stock up on foods rich in nutrients that we need to fight off winter illness and that keep us looking our best. For the skin in particular the 'rainbow diet' including yellow and orange foods are most beneficial, so stock up on mangoes, sweet potatoes and red peppers all rich in Vitamin A, which is linked to healthy skin. For more advice book in with your beauty therapist and treat yourself to a facial, kick starting you into your winter skincare regime.

Dinner Down Memory Lane

Marie Curie has just launched a new fundraising campaign with the County Patron, Alexandra Bolitho, Volunteer, Caz Chivers and Community Fundraiser, Lynda Thomas. Marie Curie is calling on food fans to hold a retro-‐inspired dinner party in aid of the charity this November. Retro food is having a revival and Marie Curie's new fundraising campaign, 'Dinner Down Memory Lane' is about holding a dinner party and recreating your favourite nostalgic food. By inviting friends to make a donation in return for a dinner with a difference, you'll be helping Marie Curie Nurses to provide care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their families. Everyone from celebrity chefs to fun-‐ loving foodies are revisiting and reinventing some of the classic cuisine of the last few decades. You can recreate time-‐honoured classics such as duck a l'orange and prawn cocktail or surprise your guests by putting a contemporary twist on some old favourites.

THE FILLING STATION th

Monday 16 November 2015 Penmorvah Manor Hotel TR11 5ED 7:30- 9:30. Speaker: Bill Stuart-White Bill is archdeacon of Cornwall with responsibility for the West of the County. He has been ordained for 25 years and was latterly priest-in-charge at St Breoke and Egloshayle. He was appointed archdeacon because he is a gifted preacher and teacher and Bishop Tim adds that he brings wisdom, sensitivity and discernment to the post. He is keen that we all focus on mission in order that the church will be once again good news for Cornwall. He will be giving a talk based on 'The Greatest Message You will ever Hear.' This theme should not only steady and encourage those who fully believe in our Lord, but also those who are seeking comfort, solace and peace from this present world. Come and listen to what gives Christians hope in the future. Everybody is welcome, no-one is excluded. The Filling Station is especially for all denominations, all faiths and none. The Penmorvah is a warm, welcoming, relaxed, comfortable venue. We have a café style atmosphere with hot coffee (or tea) and muffin. To get to Penmorvah by car, if you do not have a sat-nav, just follow the red 'droplet' (logo above). They will appear on the day we meet, on the Bickland Water Road and in Budock. If you require transport to the hotel, it can be arranged, just phone 01326 378065 and we will sort it out. The Tolmen Centre is now an established Arts

and Performance Centre with a countywide reputation. We have a regular programme of theatre, music, films and general entertainment. However, the Tolmen Centre is also available for all sorts of other things. Here are a few examples: The downstairs area can be hired at very reasonable cost for events, parties, or meetings. The area can be divided into two or left as one big space, and is well equipped with tables, chairs and comfortable sofas, as well as having a modern kitchen with enough catering facilities; including crockery, glassware and cutlery to catering standard for up to 100 people. The Tolmen Centre is fully licensed for the sale of alchoholic refreshments at any time, and for all sorts of music, dance and entertainment. However, there is a time limit on the licence and events always have to end by 11.30pm unless a special licence is obtained. At the back is a newly landscaped garden and patio area, which allows your event to open out into the fresh air and a pleasant lawned area. There is disabled access to all areas. We also have a high quality film and projection system with a big screen and surround-sound capability. This can be used to show films or dvds, or to do business style presentations. If the event is a private function (i.e., not open to the public) there are no licence implications, so village groups can screen films at very low cost as part of their activities. Either the downstairs or the upstairs can be used for band or event rehearsals, or for such things as yoga, pilates or just for group meetings or classes. We already host Fitness Dance, Todlins, The Thursday Drama Group (more adults always welcome, but fully subscribed for youngsters) and the Community Choir sessions, but there is room for more. The rents are very reasonable. There is a small fiction library in the Centre where books can be borrowed and/or exchanged. We are hoping to arrange a regular daytime opening time for the Centre to allow access to this facility, which is free. The Constant Times print facilities are available for hire for a range of printing services. We can’t actually do the printing for you, but there are computers with good software and a range of fast printers which can be used on a DIY basis by arrangement. The Constantine Museum is housed on one side of the Tolmen Centre. As well as the semi-permanent displays, there are archives of documents and photos, and, as important perhaps, the volunteer helpers have the expertise to help with all matters relating to village heritage.

The Tolmen Centre is a village facility entirely run by volunteers. It’s open to all, and everyone is welcome to make use of it. New ideas for events and activities are always welcomed. You can see details on our website tolmencentre.co.uk or call in when we are open, or phone on 01326 341353. Tolmen Centre, Fore Street, Constantine, TR11 5AA tolmen@constantinecornwall.com

ST MARY IMMACULATE Killigrew Street, Falmouth Tel: 01326 312763. Our regular Mass times are 6.30pm Sats

The evening went well, seventy-two people turned up at the Penmorvah, not just for the free coffee and doughnuts and not just for the fellowship, but for the good teaching, wonderful testimony and heartfelt worship of our Lord. During the worship, led superbly by Joff,we had an emotional life-changing story from Marcus. He explained that, just like Abraham, he was going through a desert of the soul. However, like Abraham he knew that God was with him and that no matter how long it took to cross that barren space in his life, all will be well. It was a profound message to all of us who have or will go through such bleak places. No matter how bad it might seem, our Lord will comfort us. Following our worship songs, Richard Fothergill who had the initial vision for the Filling Station gave us an inspirational talk. Many people believe that the Bible has nothing to say to us today. However, the people of the Old Testament went through similar circumstances that we find today. We are not that different. Richard emphasised this by comparing what the prophet Nehemiah went through with what today's Christians have to put up with. Nehemiah was the man tasked to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem after the exile from Babylon in the year 444BC almost 2500 years ago. Nehemiah had to put up with derision, direct attacks, distraction, lying and people trying to discredit him. Negative attitudes that Christians find today. Derision comes in many forms such as “All you are concerned with, is sin” or “Your God advocates genocide”. Direct attacks. We do not find much in Cornwall but persecution, sometimes unto death, is rife in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle and Far East. Distraction. Taking our mind off our primary goal, Jesus and concentrating on women ministers and sexuality. Lies. Literature is full of twisted fables about the life of Christ and his immediate followers. Gold is a substitute for the truth. Materialism is the idol. Discredit. If Christians fail to meet high ideals, the press swoops like vultures. Also people are led to believe the less than flattering portrayal of religious persons in plays and films. Nehemiah overcame his detractors, so how do Christians do the same? Firstly by dispelling the fear of telling the world you are a Christian. Secondly by telling the truth of the Gospel, and thirdly by praying for those poor souls who do not know (yet) the peace and grace of our Lord. Now that Christians and Christianity are becoming more into the public eye, the results have been impressive. There has been a resurgence, not only are people returning, or coming for the first time, there is also a growth in new ways to perceive God. Street Pastors are in most big cities as are food banks. Well known media personalities and sports-people are proclaiming their faith. There are also fresh initiatives such as Alpha courses, Houses of Prayer, church planting, Filling Station, Messy Church and “Open the Book” to name a few. Jesus told us that the Kingdom of God had come, we should rejoice. We should expect opposition. No genuine move of God will not be opposed. We are people of the Way, Jesus never said it would be easy, but we have the answer, and it seems as though the country is gradually coming round. For which we must thank and praise our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Thinking of changing over to a eco energy system in Cornwall? We can save you over 50% on your current bills by changing to an eco energy system

Dear Falmouth, Two fabulous comics will be heading your way soon… In Twenty Fifteen, Radio 4 and TV favourite Fred MacAulay looks at his family life at home and looks forward to how his country will shape up after the referendum of 2014. As well as looking backwards and forwards, he'll probably look sideways at politics, sport, the environment and, without sounding too like a brief for a newspaper, there will undoubtedly be a colour supplement with a look at 'celebrity'. He will be at the Poly Theatre on Saturday 21st November.

And a heads up that our favourite comedian/activist Mark Thomas will be bringing his 2015 total sell-out Fringe show Trespass to the Poly Theatre on Thursday 10th December, asking the question: “If the ramblers of the 1930's were here now, what would they do to open up the cities? How do we turn the skyscrapers and corporate squares into our playgrounds?” Inspired by the mass trespass of Kinder Scout in 1932, Mark turns his eye to how the government have sold off the majority of our communal spaces, from playing fields to public rights of way, setting out to try and carve a small space in the urban world where mischief and random chance can lurk.

What Makes Me Happy: Walking by the sea hand in hand with Dave, my partner.

Life would be simpler if... our families lived under one roof growing up and growing old together, having fun, caring and learning from each other. My top tip: Stop buying expensive moisturisers and products full of chemicals. Olive oil is a great moisturiser; inexpensive and natural.

My Favourite Food: ....is when someone cooks for me. My Hobbies: Currently it is my weekend browsing jaunts in the delightful Cornwall Hospice charity shops in Penryn and always it is creating harmonious spaces indoors and out My Favourite item of clothing: My DKNY pencil skirt found in Falmouth's Sue Ryder charity shop for ÂŁ3.95! My Proudest moment: It has to be my son's graduations; a First for his Classical Civilisation degree and being awarded for the university's most outstanding academic achievement and then his Distinction for History Masters.

My Simple pleasure: Making a cooked breakfast for my loved ones.
