Hotel Proprietor Takes The Ice Bucket Challenge!

On Wednesday 3rd September, Nigel Carpenter, Proprietor of St Michael’s Hotel & Spa, took on the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MND) with dozens of staff watching and cheering him on. As Nigel stood bracing himself on the swimming pool terrace two huge icy buckets of water were dropped on him from the windows of the Flying Fish Restaurant by Nigel’s PA, Rowenna Brock and Natasha Milne, Property Manager. Down on the terrace two more icy buckets were thrown by General Manager, Karl Taylor, and Lucie Saunders, Financial Controller. Nigel said ‘We were nominated by our friends at Biscuiteers Baking Company and as it’s for such a good cause I knew it had to be done. The staff really went to town and gave me a good icy soaking and they have generously donated for the pleasure, raising over £100 for MND which I will match. I have also nominated two friends and prominent local businessmen, Neil Chadwick of Seasalt Clothing and Stafford Sumner of Jarrang – I look forward to seeing their videos!’ MND is a rapidly progressive and fatal disease which can affect any adult at any time and attacks the motor neurones that send messages from the brain to the muscles, leaving people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves. The Motor Neurone Disease Association is the only national organisation In the UK dedicated to the support of people with MND and research into effective treatments. Supporting young mum’s to achieve

Five years since the start of the Young Mums Will Achieve (YMWA) programme, Cornwall has been ranked amongst the best in the UK for young mothers accessing education, training or employment.

YMWA is a two day education and Life Skills course for young mums and mums to be, aged 19 and under. A partnership between Cornwall Council, Cornwall College and Fit ‘N’ Fun Creche Providers, YMWA’s also offers support for the development of positive parenting and life skills.

Heather Tabb, Project Manager for Cornwall College said “Young Mums Will Achieve is an amazing programme that enables these young women to continue with their education. The mums who have completed the programme have progressed on to apprenticeships, employment, further and higher education. It is a great achievement to be now ranked amongst the best in the country and we look forward to helping many more young women to a chieve their goals.”

The scheme has also been hailed as an example of best practice by the European Social fund (ESF) and earlier this year Heather was invited to the conference in Brussels: “It was a tremendous achievement for Young Mums Will Achieve to be involved in the ESF Launch Conference and highlights the hard work and commitment of everyone involved in the project. We were invited to take part in the workshop based purely on the accomplishments that we have made since the projects inception and were held up as an example of best practice to others.”

It hasn’t always been this way in 2009 Cornwall was ranked 138 out of 151 Local Authorities. That’s when the award winning Young Mums Will Achieve (YMWA) programme was launched and since then Young Mums Will Achieve has gone from strength to strength with more young mothers able to access education, training and employment.

Rachel Jones, Managing Director of Fit N Fun Kids said: “It has been a delight to be a part of a project like this, our team very much enjoy supporting young mothers in their learning environment. But our involvement doesn’t end there, we are also in the privileged position to further support with not only childcare needs but to advise and guide in areas such as parenting skills through physical and interactive activities and educating in areas such as health and nutrition.”

Key to the project’s success, and supporting young parents’ participation, is excellent partnership working in Cornwall, supporting young parents and their families throughout their journey. Key partners include Wild Young Parents, Careers South West, the Family Nurse Partnership and Brook Young Fathers as well as universal services including midwifery and health visiting, children centres and locality support.

Exciting start for the new term: Fit N Fun Kids are already celebrating the start of the new term by being recognised nationally for their high quality childcare provisions throughout the county and are also celebrating some new members to the team. We are really excited to be attending the National Nursery World Awards for the fifth year running having this year being shortlisted for the Nursery Chain of the Year Award, Supporting Parents Award (recognition for their work with Young Mums Will Achieve in particular) and for a Community Award for their charity work, their work for Leading Women UK supporting women in business and the Enterprise Foundation, supporting young people with enterprise and employability. This term we have three new Apprentices, a new full time Early Years Teacher for our Pre-‐School and a new Chef and a Volunteer Parent Liaison! Apprentices working in our Falmouth setting, Sam and Henrietta, are learning at the setting with our qualified staff with Amy undertaking business administration and events management. Our new Early Years Teacher Sarah will be enhancing our children's learning, particularly focusing on early child development with our younger children and numeracy and literacy with our pre-‐school children. 12 TR11 is always looking for local stories about YOU, FRIENDS, FAMILY

Mark, our new Chef has already enhanced our children's breakfast, snack, lunch and evening meal menu and received outstanding feedback following our recent Nippers Nutrition assessment, taking us to the highest level. Mark, a qualified Chef, sources fresh local produce daily and cooks all the children's meals fresh in the morning to ensure they are getting the best nutritional diet throughout their day with us. Feedback from parents, children (and staff) has been amazing! We are delighted to have one of our parents, Bridget, join us as a Volunteer Parent Liaison. Bridget will be working closely with the Senior Management Team and will primarily focus on our new Parent Carer Networks which will take place monthly; supporting our families; helping with our charity work and community events. We feel very lucky to have Bridget support us and she is already making a positive impact! Our Room Managers have also been busy studying Level 4 Leadership & Management with Cornwall College, again to improve their skills in developing their themselves and their team. CEO, Rachel Jones is really excited for the start of the new academic year; "Well what a start, but I am not surprised, we have an outstanding team here at Fit ‘N’ Fun Kids, all of whom are really passionate about giving children in Cornwall the best start in life. For us it is all about what is it like for a child here? We focus heavily on reflective practice to ensure we are supporting each child's individual needs. Having a new team join us as well as seeing some of our longest serving members of the team promoted to more senior positions, can only help us towards achieving another great year". This term we are very busy with our younger children but am pleased to say that we do currently have spaces available for FREE childcare in our 2, 3 and 4 year old rooms. Our Pre-‐school is open all year round but parents only wishing to access their fifteen hours funded childcare can also attend term time only. It is the same for those families who are eligible for 2 year old funding, again children can attend term time only but we also offer funded childcare to be spread out over the year to support continuity. We meet once a month in the Penmorvah Manor Hotel. The atmosphere is like a coffee shop, with round tables, flowers, good coffee and muffins or doughnuts. A very relaxed, laid back, informal setting among friends. We have songs, prayer, a life-‐changing talk and a talk by an invited speaker. This time we had Richard Fothergill, the originator of the Filling Station. His speech was about the Holy Spirit who leads us to Jesus, but until our Lord returns, The Holy Spirit is our guide and comforter and who empowers us for life. There are 27 gifts of The Holy Spirit and some of them such as healing and wisdom prophecies would be shown in the Prayer Ministry after the talk. Richard gave us many examples of healing, both spiritually and physically. Several people at the meeting mentioned that they had been helped through prayer, especially one lady who had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. She was prayed for at the previous Filling Station and has now mystified her doctors by showing much reduced tumors. We shall continue to pray until she is cured. People said that the presence of the Holy Spirit was strong. The Word is getting around; it is going like a forest fire. Use your hands to mix the beetroot, carrot, oatmeal, eggs, shallot, dill and parsley in a bowl, seasoning with salt and pepper. Press together, cover and chill in the fridge for 1 hour. Preheat your oven to 180˚C. Divide the mixture into 8 similar sized balls, squeezing them together in your hands, then flatten a little into burger shapes. Heat a thin layer of oil in a large frying pan and fry the burgers on each side for 3-‐4 mins, until golden. Transfer to a non-‐stick baking tray. Put the mushrooms on a separate non-‐stick baking tray. Drizzle with oil and season. Put both in the oven for 20 mins. When they’re ready, melt a knob of butter in a pan. Add the spinach and stir for a couple of mins, until wilted. Season. Spoon the spinach onto the mushrooms and top with the burgers.
