It is my pleasure to invite you to join us for the 2023 Missouri Red Angus Show-Me Reds Sale and Missouri Red Angus Annual Meeting. The vision of the Red Angus breed is to “Dominate the beef industry with Red Angus genetics” by valuing Innovation, Integrity, Commitment, and Relationships. I believe the Show-Me Reds Sale has earned a reputation as a source of great Red Angus genetics offered by incredible people. I encourage you to not only attend the sale to source great cattle, but to take the time to visit with the consignors and Missouri Red Angus members. One innovation that our association has implemented is the MORAA Fescue Belt Certification Program. This is an effort to identify and promote Red Angus animals bred, born & raised in fescue country. Cattle from the fescue belt are more likely to thrive in our environment and in most environments in the U.S. As you browse the catalog, you will find cattle that qualify for the Fescue Belt Certification identified as such.

As we look at trends in the beef industry, we know that it is time to build back the American cowherd. Red Angus genetics are uniquely suited for this time as cattlemen demand strong maternal traits on the ranch and carcass value in the end product. The maternal traits of mothering ability, fertility, docility and longevity are hallmarks of Red Angus genetics. The carcass traits of Red Angus influenced cattle are highly accepted in the market as well. What an incredible combination of economically relevant traits this breed has to offer!

All animals are guaranteed by the seller as outlined in the Red Angus Association of America code of ethical sale practices.

ProS ..... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).

HB ....... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).

GM....... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).

CED Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)

Fescue Belt Certified Program Announced

Many of us who live in the “fescue belt” have experienced the problems associated with importing newly purchased cattle into our environment. What we’ve seen is a significant percentage of cattle that have not been raised on fescue struggle to perform after being imported onto this “grass we love to hate”. Some animals eventually overcome this issue, but many will not and will eventually be culled from the herd.

Fescue toxicity results from toxins called ergot alkaloids, which are produced by a fungus called endophyte that grows within the fescue plant. Cattle experiencing fescue toxicosis may exhibit rough hair coats, heat stress, suppressed appetite, poor growth rates, reduced reproductive performance, and in some cases lost tail switches or even hooves. The decreased animal performance seen during the “summer slump” of cool-season pastures is made even worse by these toxic effects of fescue.

Research on the subject of fescue management has been done for years. Several strategies can be used to mitigate the toxic effects of fescue, including removal or suppression of seedheads,overseedingof pastures with legumes or other forages, and good mineral supplementation programs. However, fescue remains a serious challenge. The USDA estimates fescue toxicosis costs the U.S. beef industry an estimated $600 million to $1 billion annually in lost revenue because of reduced reproductive and growth rates in cattle herds.

Missouri beef producers recognize the value of selecting cattle that are adapted to fescue. In 2016, University of Missouri Extension Geneticist, Dr. Jared Decker, was awarded a $3 million grant from the USDA to evaluate genetic differences in cattle among regions. Decker and his colleagues are utilizing DNA markers to study the interactions between cattle DNA and the environment. The study is focused on DNA, hair shedding, and tall fescue forage. When complete, the data will be used to design region-specific EPDs.

The entire state of Missouri is situated within the fescue belt. Since fescue was introduced into our region, Missourians have built their herds retaining only genetics that have proven to be “fescue tolerant.” When looking for Red Angus genetics, look for the MORAA FBC logo & cattle that have “Bred-in Fescue Tolerance.”

The Missouri Red Angus Associations Board of Directors recently approved the “Missouri Red Angus Association Fescue Belt Certified” program as an initiative designed to promote Missouri Red Angus members genetics.
