Over €3.9m for Kerry projects under Community Recognition Fund

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D, Norma Foley, has welcomed €3,946,095 in funding for Kerry County Council under the Community Recognition Fund 2024.

The Community Recognition Fund was first introduced last year to recognise the huge efforts made by communities in welcoming and supporting people coming to Ireland.

Through the 2023 allocation, funding of €50 million was approved for some 900 projects in supporting cities, towns and villages nationwide that have welcomed people from Ukraine and other countries.

Under today’s announcement, a further €50 million is being provided again to deliver projects over 2024 and 2025.

Local authorities, in collaboration with communities, will be funded to develop projects that will deliver long term benefits to those living in the areas selected.

Projects that will be funded include:

• Development or refurbishment of community or cultural

facilities including play areas, walkways, parks, community/ sensory gardens, allotments, and recreational areas;

• Development or refurbishment of local club and sports facilities;

• Enhancement to school/parish facilities which are open to use by all of the community after school hours;

• Purchase of equipment for local clubs, festivals, community events and organisations

• Transport infrastructure such as community vehicles

Minister Foley said: “The Community Recognition Fund will give towns and villages across Kerry an opportunity to create a more inclusive and enjoyable environment for all. This is a very significant funding announcement by Government with over €3.9m being allocated to Kerry County Council and it builds on the €4.

4 million allocated to the county in 2023. By investing in facilities and organisations that facilitate

integration and community participation, we are building stronger communities that embrace diversity while promoting social cohesion.”

“I know communities the length and breadth of the country have really stepped up to the plate in recent

months in terms of welcoming families from Ukraine or those seeking asylum from other countries. “This funding is about recognising the efforts and the generosity that so many communities have shown. “

Fred Answers Your Mattress Questions!

Hello everyone, it’s me Fred. I hope you are keeping all well out there. I would like to share with you some questions I have been asked by our customers visiting our Lots Furnishings Tralee store in Dromtacker on the Listowel Road .

1.” Fred , I am looking to purchase a double mattress today, but the one I like is the king size on display. Does it come in a 4ft 6? “

YES, It does. The common mattress sizes are 3ft (Small), 4ft (Small Double), 4ft6 (Double), 5ft (King) and 6ft (Super King), we have selected to display this particular mattress in 5ft. Mattresses also can be ordered off sizes if required.

2. “ Fred , Which mattress would you recommend which is the most popular in your store?”

We don’t recommend any particular mattress; it depends on your requirements. The most important thing to remember when choosing a mattress is COMFORT and SUPPORT.

3. “ Fred , What mattresses do you sell in your shop?”

We sell Irish made King Koil high quality mattresses and affordable range mattresses. Our main goal is to help our customers to invest in quality mattresses, and achieve a good night sleep. A mattress such as King Koil comes with a 10 year warranty. That’s why we organise Mattress Promotion events a few times a year.

4. “ Fred , I bought a mattress but its dipping in the middle and it’s not level anymore? “

There could be a few reasons why the top layers are not settled down properly. It could be a bed, base or a faulty mattress itself. We

recommend to rotate and flip (if flippable) mattress every 2 weeks for the first 6 months after that, 6 times a year. By doing that mattress fillings distribute evenly.

5. “ Fred ...A Divan base or bed frame? which one will give the best support?

Both a divan base and a bed frame with appropriately spaced slats can provide support for a mattress. The choice between them may depend on personal preference, style, and other factors such as storage options or room aesthetics.

EMPLOYER BASED TRAINING -EBT

Experience 2 days in our Centre and 3 days 'On the Job ' training placement, in any area of interest for a Level 4 quali cation (2 Year Course).

Hi, my name is DJ Kelleher and this is my testimonial about starting National Learning Network Tralee, how it helped me improve myself and how it helped me get a job in Mr. Price in Killarney.

Before going to the National Learning Network in Tralee, Clash Road, Co. Kerry, I was a timid, shy young man lacking in self-confidence in myself and my abilities. However, after going to the National Learning Network, I have made not just improvements in myself, but also in my social and interaction skills which helped me make lots of new friends there as well. The courses that I did there were Directions and Introductory Skills Training. I also sampled other courses like Catering, Retail, Employer Based Training, Applied Information Technology and Blended Learning.

I started Directions in 2018, it was a three-year course, with the five days going to the college. During that time it gave me the opportunity to go on a journey to find myself and to discover what is it that I want to do in life. Directions has even interest me in learning how to paint and to write poetry. The instructors, staff workers and the other students, who I became friends with, were nice to me, and they always encouraged and challenged me to try something new like cooking, baking and dusting a room.

In 2021, I started my next course called Introductory Skills Training (IST for short), It was a year and a half course with Monday to Wednesday going to the college and Thursday and Friday going on work experience. This course covers everything you need to know about working with others, going out into the workplace and how to make time for work and myself. I made lots of new friends both in this course and out in the workplace, which was in Mr. Price in Killarney, who all helped me to improve myself and to help me become a better person. Thanks to my new friends, the NLN instructors and1 Mr. Price Staff Team, I got myself full time job working twenty one hours a week.

I would like to thank all of National Learning Network Tralee and Mr. Price for helping me to get where I am today and for those who are looking where to go next for further education, I highly recommend National Learning Network Tralee for their positive, helping and hardworking spirit or if its where to go to find work, I also highly recommend Mr. Price Killarney for their different communication and teamworking techniques.

The club hosted three underage tournaments at the weekend for Girls U12s and U14s on Saturday and Girls U11s on Sunday. The U14 Tournament was won by Team Clare with victory over Malahide in the decider. The U12 Tournament Cup competition was won by Bantry with St. Brendan’s winning out the Plate competition on Saturday. On Sunday it was

the turn of the U11s and the Cup competition went to St. Brendan’s who won out by 4 points over Bantry in the final. The girls were deserved winners having performed very well throughout the day and accounting for Glanmire, Limerick Celtics and Tralee Magic on the way to the Final.

Registration Open Now For The 12th Annual County Clean Up

The 12th annual County Clean Up will take place across the county on Saturday, 6th April and voluntary organisations and individuals across Kerry are invited to get involved in one of the biggest community events of the year in the county. The County Clean-Up takes place with the support of KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council and over the past decade, hundreds of tonnes of rubbish have been collected along Kerry roads by thousands of volunteers.

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jim Finucane urged everyone to participate in the effort to clear up towns, villages and the countryside across Kerry. ‘The tremendous effort of volunteers over the past twelve years has made a major contribution to keeping Kerry litter-free. The County Clean Up greatly complements the work which Kerry County Council does all year round to promote environmental awareness and

maintain our wonderful landscape. ‘Registration is now open at www. countycleanup.com and I hope that local communities will participate in large numbers,’ he said.

Noel O’Reilly from KWD said: ‘KWD Recycling is proud to be involved in the County Clean Up which is now in its 12th year. It is a very important day that has made a huge difference on the roads of Kerry and west Cork with thousands of people showing great community spirit.’

Environmental Awareness Officer at Kerry County Council, Breda Moriarty said: ‘The amazing and diligent work of many community groups and individuals for the County Clean Up is admirable. Everyone coming together to keep Kerry clean and our roads litter free for an 12th year is fantastic.’ Groups must register to ensure they receive a clean-up pack and to nominate a collection point for any litter collected.

Tralee St. Patrick’s Day Parade in recognition of the club’s 30th Anniversary. It is very fitting that Club President and founding member of the club Charles O’Sullivan will be the Grand Marshall for the event. It is a real privilege for the club and for Charles to be recognised in this manner and we would like to acknowledge and thank the organising committee for bestowing this great honour on the club as it celebrates its 30th year promoting, developing and growing the game of basketball in Tralee.

low-calorie cooking spray , 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 tsp garlic granules, 2 skinless and boneless chicken breasts, thickly sliced, 4 back bacon rashers, visible fat removed, roughly chopped, 300g button mushrooms, cut in half 100g plain quark, 100ml hot chicken stock, 1 tsp mustard powder, 1 tsp dried parsley

What you do:

1. Spray a medium-size, non-stick frying plan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a low-medium heat. Add the onion and garlic granules and stir-fry for 5 minutes, or until lightly browned.

2. Add the chicken, bacon and mushrooms and cook for a further 10 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked.

3. Meanwhile, put the quark, chicken stock, mustard powder and a little seasoning in a large bowl. Mix really well to create a thick sauce.

4. Add the sauce to the chicken mixture, stir thoroughly and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Sprinkle with the parsley and serve hot, with roasted peppers and asparagus, or seasonal vegetables of your choice.

SHORT AND EASY TO REMEMBER!

Why are snails slow? Because they’re carrying a house on their back.

What’s the smartest insect? A spelling bee!

What does a storm cloud wear under his raincoat? Thunderwear.

What is fast, loud and crunchy? A rocket chip.

How does the ocean say hi? It waves!

What do you call a couple of chimpanzees sharing an Amazon account? PRIME-mates.

Why did the teddy bear say no to dessert? Because she was stuffed.

Why did the soccer player take so long to eat dinner? Because he thought he couldn’t use his hands.

Name the kind of tree you can hold in your hand? A palm tree!

What has ears but cannot hear? A cornfield.

What’s a cat’s favorite dessert? A bowl full of mice-cream.

Where did the music teacher leave her keys? In the piano!

What did the policeman say to his hungry stomach? “Freeze. You’re under a vest.”

A CHILD ASKED HIS FATHER

“How were people born?” So his father said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on.” The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, “We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now.” The child ran back to his father and said, “You lied to me!” His father replied, “No, your mom was talking about her side of the family.”

TOO MANY CATS!

Teacher: “If I gave you 2 cats and another 2 cats and another 2, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “No, listen carefully... If I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples, and another two apples and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Six.” Teacher: “Good. Now if I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven!” Teacher: “Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!”

Johnny: “Because I’ve already got a freaking cat!”

IN MEMORY 2nd Anniversary

Bridie Carroll

20 Gleann Scotia, Ballyard, Tralee

Died 26th March 2022

I heard your voice in the wind today and I turned to see your face:

The warmth of the wind caressed me

As I stood silently in place.

I felt your touch in the sun today

As its warmth filled the sky; I closed my eyes for your embrace And my spirit soared high.

I saw your eyes in the window pane

As I watched the falling rain; It seemed as each raindrop fell It quietly said your name.

I hope that Bridie rests in peace & we can all live in peace; that we carry the pain of her loss with courage & dignity, finding the balance between remembering & living. Bridie I hope you know we carry you in our hearts every single day.

Sleep Well my friend.
