Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has welcomed the expansion of the Hot School Meals programme to a further 33 Kerry schools.
The scheme was first set up in 2019 with a pilot of 30 schools but has now expanded to almost 2,850 primary schools.
Around 81 primary schools in Kerry are currently operating the Hot School Meals programme and this is now being extended to a further 33 primary schools in the county.
Minister Foley said:
“I’m really pleased to confirm that 33 additional schools are now joining the hot school meals program in Kerry. As a former teacher and indeed Minister for Education, I know the value of young people having the opportunity to receive food in schools. It improves their learning, improves their activity levels in school as well and indeed throughout the day.
I’m particularly pleased as well to acknowledge that there will be a review around the nutritional elements of foods that are available in school too. So huge thanks to
my colleague, Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary and indeed to the schools who operate and make this work every single day throughout the country.” There will be a review of the nutritional standards in the Hot School Meals scheme and the removal of the optional food that is high in saturated fat, sugar, and salt from the school meal menus.
Minister Foley was a member of the negotiating team for the Programme for Government, which contains a commitment to continue to expand and improve the Free Hot School Meals programme and to ensure that suppliers “adhere to robust guidelines on the nutritional value of meals, the dietary requirements of students, reduce food waste and utilise recyclable packaging.”
Local young men Shane McCarthy and Darren McEvoy are asking people to join them this Easter Monday for a special 5K walk/run in Tralee Town Park, all in aid of the Kerry Cancer Support Group. The event, taking place on Easter Monday at 12pm sharp, is not just about fitness — it’s about connection, support, and raising awareness for a service that has played a very vital role in the community for the past 15 years. Kerry Cancer Support Group provides free, daily transport for cancer patients to and from their appointments at eight different treatment centres. This invaluable service ensures that no one undergoing cancer treatment is left without a way to get there.
“We wanted to do something meaningful — something that brings people together and gives back to
a charity that supports so many local families,” said co-organiser
Shane. “Whether you walk, run, or just come out to show support, it all makes a difference.”
The organisers have set up a fundraising page on iDonate.ie, where supporters can make secure online donations. Every euro raised will go directly to Kerry Cancer Support Group to help keep their transport service on the road.
Participants and supporters are encouraged to share the fundraising page using the social media options provided, helping to spread awareness and encourage donations.
“We’re asking everyone to come out, have a laugh, support each other, and make a real impact in our community,” added Darren.
Breda from Kerry Cancer Support Group said that she has really
enjoyed working with the lads to organise the event and is really grateful to them and is looking forward to seeing a big crowd in the Town Park on Easter Monday.

Kerry Sinn Féin will hold its annual Easter Sunday Commemoration on Sunday, April 20th, honoring the legacy of the 1916 Easter Rising and those who fought for Irish freedom. The commemorative march will begin at 12:00 PM from The Pikeman Monument on Denny Street, Tralee, proceeding to Rath Cemetery, where the main event will commence at 12:30 PM. This year’s commemoration will be chaired by the Chairperson of the Kerry Sinn Féin Comhairle Ceantair Daithí Fitzgerald and will feature a keynote address by renowned writer, political commentator, activist and former Sinn Féin Director of Publicity, Danny Morrison. Morrison is widely respected for his contributions to Irish political discourse and literature. His powerful commentary, shaped by a life of activism, imprisonment, and storytelling, offers deep insights into Irish republicanism, censorship,
and reconciliation. As the author of several acclaimed novels, memoirs, and political essays, his address is expected to be both moving and thought-provoking.
Speaking ahead of the event, Daithí Fitzgerald emphasized the ongoing importance of the Easter commemorations:
“The importance of Easter Sunday commemorations is that they offer a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come since 1916. We gather to remember all the men and women who gave their all for Irish freedom. But this year, we also look forward to the future of this island, not only the contentious issues of today but also how these issues can be more effectively addressed in a United Ireland.”
Kerry Sinn Féin welcomes the public to join them in this important annual event of remembrance and forward looking dialogue.

The Ashe Hotel, in Tralee is proudly celebrating its 10th anniversary this April. Since opening its doors in 2015, The Ashe Hotel has become a cornerstone of hospitality in the heart of Tralee, offering exceptional service, stylish accommodation, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. When hotel owner Colin Boyle first laid eyes on the building that would become The Ashe Hotel in 2014, he observed, “There was a total air of abandonment.” The property had been closed for some time, but its potential was evident: a prime town centre location, generously sized bedrooms, and well-designed bar, restaurant, and banqueting areas. Jane, Colin’s wife, shares their vision: “We wanted to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere by developing a great team and carefully designing the interior spaces, combining our love of vintage pieces with close attention to the comfort of our guests.” Both are deeply involved in the hotel’s daily operations, bringing expertise in hospitality, construction, and design to many aspects of the business. Situated in Tralee’s Old Market area, the couple emphasised
the importance of being warm and welcoming to both neighbours and visiting guests. The hotel quickly gained a reputation for excellent food and became a venue for special family celebrations and events. This popularity led to rapid expansion, including doubling the restaurant’s capacity and adding a spacious, sunlit external terrace.
Today, The Ashe Hotel stands as a
thriving 4-star destination in Tralee, featuring Alfie’s Restaurant and Bar, the glamorous Lottie’s event space, and the quirky Roundy’s Bar just across the road on Brogue Makers Lane. Approaching their 10-year anniversary, the hotel has completed a €2 million investment in new deluxe rooms, suites, and energy sustainability projects, positioning them for continued growth. They attribute their success to loyal guests and a dedicated team, expressing gratitude to all who have contributed to the hotel’s development. With Tralee being a wonderful place to live, work, and play, The Ashe Hotel anticipates a bright future ahead.
The team at The Ashe Hotel continues to build on their
reputation by working with local producers and suppliers to create unique and memorable stays. Their commitment to quality, sustainability, and community engagement remains at the heart of their hospitality ethos.
As The Ashe Hotel enters its next decade, it remains dedicated to evolving while maintaining its signature blend of quality and character that has made it a standout choice in Tralee’s hospitality scene.

The Rose of Tralee International Festival has officially launched its search for this year’s Rose Buds - and in a major first for the beloved Irish celebration, boys are now being welcomed into the fold as Rose Buddies.
The announcement was made at a joyful launch event in Tralee this week, where Festival organisers were joined by a past Rose and Rose Escort, local families, and an excited Rose Bud and Rose Buddy to unveil the new initiative. Traditionally open only to girls aged 6 to 10, the Rose Buds programme has become one of the most heartwarming aspects of the Festival, offering young children a chance to take part in the magic and make memories that last a lifetime.
Kerry Rose Emer Dineen, 2024 Rose Escort Tom Dowling, 2024 Rose Bud Holly Brosnan and Rose Buddy Iarla Farrell launched the search at Fairtree Village – the new Official Sponsor to the 2025 Rose Buds and Rose Buddies.
Now, for the first time, boys in the same age group are invited to share in the experience – meeting
the Roses, taking part in Festival events, and representing the next generation of Irish pride and spirit.
“This is something we’ve been talking about for quite a while,” said Suzan O’Gara, Festival Director of the Rose of Tralee. “We’ve had so many families tell us their sons would love to take part – and this year, we’re making that happen. The Rose Buds programme has always been about community, inclusion, and joy. Welcoming boys as Rose Buddies is a natural and exciting step forward. And who knows, we might just find a future Rose Escort of the Year! ”
Over the years, the Rose Buds programme has allowed children from all over Ireland – and indeed around the world – to build connections, take part in Festival activities and events such as the Rose parade and live television show, and enjoy special moments throughout the Festival. Rose Buddies will now enjoy all the same opportunities, with the emphasis firmly on fun, friendship and belonging.
This year Fairtree Village has been
announced as the official sponsors to the 33 Rose Buds and 33 Rose Buddies to be selected for 2025. This lucky group of 6-10 year olds get to experience the Festival alongside their paired Roses and Rose Escorts, and become mini ambassadors of the Festival at fun events during the Festival week and take part in the television show hosted by Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas live on RTÉ.
The 2025 Rose of Tralee International Festival will take place
from from August 15th – 19th, promising a week full of celebration, connection, and Irish culture at its finest – now with even more young faces lighting up the stage.
Applications for Rose Buds and Rose Buddies are now open, with places expected to fill quickly. Families are encouraged to visit the official Festival website www.roseoftralee. ie to apply and find out more about what’s involved.

Kerry FC returned to Mounthawk Park on Friday night to face Athlone Town, aiming to finish the first quarter of the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division on a high. Following a tough trip to Limerick, the home fixture provided a much-needed boost. Athlone Town, coming off three consecutive defeats, were also desperate to bounce back.
Kerry started brightly, with Joe Adams testing the keeper early. Minutes later, teenage sensation Luke Palmer opened the scoring with a powerful header after a brilliant cross from Sean McGrath. Palmer struck again in the 24th minute, tapping into an empty net after more slick play and a defensive lapse from Athlone.
Goalkeeper Tim-Oliver Hiemer ensured Kerry kept their lead intact with a crucial save just before halftime.
Athlone looked more dangerous after the break, with Kyle Robinson forcing another sharp save from Hiemer. Kerry, however, managed their chances well. Niall Brookwell went close with a header, and Daniel Okwute saw his effort denied. With three minutes left, Ryan Kelliher – making his first home appearance since the season opener – sealed the win. Okwute squared the ball to Kelliher, who fired home after an initial blocked effort, marking his first goal of the 2025 season. It was a composed and clinical display from Kerry FC, who now
fixtures.

Danny Holmes answers queries about your pets
“Hi, I’m beginning to get concerned about my ageing dog and cat getting arthritis. What are the signs I should be looking for? And is there anything I should be doing to help?”
Danny says Arthritis symptoms can vary dramatically between individual dogs and cats, in type and severity.
John, Killorglin
Symptoms may be worse after exercise or rest. It’s common for our clients with arthritic dogs to describe their dog’s mobility by saying they have a really hard time when first getting up, then seem to improve once they get moving. Arthritis can affect one or more joints anywhere in the body; however, the most common joints affected in dogs are the hips, knees, shoulders and elbows. Cats are harder to spot as they normally sit around for 18/24 hours already. Temperament is a better guide in cat as arthritic cats become more bad-tempered.
Some of the symptoms to look out for are
• Slow to walk, climb stairs, jump or play
• Limping/lameness
• Lagging or refusal to go on walks
• Pain or stiffness when getting up or down
• Yelping when touched
• A change in personality (aggression when normally good-natured)
• Licking of the affected joints
Above all, observe and listen to your dog or cat for its non-verbal signals.
Arthritis is best managed using multiple techniques. These include weight management, medication, special diets, and joint supplements. It’s important for pet parents to understand that arthritis is not curable, and even with aggressive treatment, osteoarthritis continues to progress throughout their pet’s life, and often eventually has a significant impact on an aging cat or dog’s quality of life.
