Cara Credit Union & Career Ahead Help Students Rock Their Next Step

Cara Credit Union and Career Ahead have teamed up again to support Leaving Certificate students as they transition to college, further education, or apprenticeships.

This exciting yet daunting phase comes with challenges, but help is at hand. Mary Lucey of Career Ahead is delivering the ‘How to Rock Your College Experience’ programme to 6th-year students across Tralee, Castleisland, Killorglin, Ballyduff, Causeway, and Corca Dhuibhne. The first session was held at CBS The Green, Tralee and covers key topics like moving away from home, adjusting to a new learning environment, handling course challenges, and financial management.

Mary Lucey explains: “Each year, many students and apprentices drop out due to emotional, academic, or

financial struggles. This programme provides practical advice to ease their transition and help them succeed.”

Philip Lynch, Marketing Officer at Cara Credit Union, added: “Supporting young members is a priority for us. This initiative not only prepares students for their next steps but also teaches financial management, budgeting, and expenses.”

Cara Credit Union also offers financial support, including student loans and a free student current account with a Mastercard® debit card, accessible worldwide.

Scheme., which has a budget of €22 million, is a continuation and expansion of a similar scheme that operated in 2024. PET CORNER

¨Is it best to have my pet neutered as I have heard so many conflicting reports?"

Danny says ¨Neutering your pet means surgically removing the ovaries and uterus of a female pet (also known as spaying) or surgically removing both testicles of a male pet (commonly known as castration).

Neutering your pet has several positive health benefits for your pet. In addition to health benefits for your pet there are also other advantages to neutering your pet that impact on the whole household. Neutering a female pet can help prevent mammary cancer and ovarian cancer. Unneutered females can also get an infection in their womb which can be life threatening called pyometra: by removing the womb they are no longer at risk of this happening. Neutering male pets can help prevent prostate disease and prevent testicular cancer.

Unneutered male cats tend to get into more fights with other cats. This is one of the most common ways for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukaemia virus) to spread in the cat population. FIV and FeLV are serious and incurable disease that effects the immune system and can significantly reduce cats’ lifespan. Male cats that are not neutered tend to spray indoors (this is when they mark their territory). This results in a strong and very unpleasant smell. By neutering your male cat this unwanted behaviour can be stopped. A common question people also ask will neutering change my pet’s personality, but this is not true. The only change in personality is to unwanted behaviours such as roaming, fighting and spraying. Of course, as an owner, you must train your pet too. Neutering wont teach a dog right from wrong or not to bite. It will just reduce an individual’s reactivity and natural urges¨

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER

MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Matrimonial assets and divorce

Fiona was married for 20 years to Hugh, and they have three children. Hugh owned the large family home which he had bought before they go married and they moved into that home on marriage and have been living there since. Hugh inherited a family business which he has been working in and expanded during the marriage. Fiona is a public servant and initially job shared and as the children got older, she went back to work full time and has been promoted and has a large pension as a result. Hugh has been paying into pensions and has built up a good pension pot as well. They have three children and due to unhappy differences, they are proceeding for a divorce. They are wondering what is involved.

In order to apply for a valid divorce in Ireland one must have been two out of three years living separate and apart this could be in the one home, there must be no chance of reconciliation, one or other of the parties must have been resident in Ireland for the last year and proper provision out of matrimonial assets must be provided for each spouse.

When it comes to a divorce assets can be matrimonial or non-matrimonial. Non-Matrimonial assets may be assets that may have been accumulated pre marriage or inherited property from one’s own family. Matrimonial assets would be assets that were accumulated during the marriage e.g. house contents, cars, pensions and usually the family home. While Hugh had accumulated assets pre- marriage there is a principal of matrimonialisation of assets which means that such assets may be included in the family pot for distribution on divorce. The Judge looks at a variety of matters to see if

the assets have been matrimonialised e.g. how they arose, the source of the asset, how they were used and treated during the marriage, the length of the marriage, the needs and contributions of both parties are considered. The Divorce legislation and extensive caselaw sets out criteria that the court consider which includes the contributions both parties made within the marriage, the age of the parties, length of the marriage, physical or mental disability, conduct, income and outgoings, future needs including accommodation inter alia.

In relation to the division of assets on divorce it is said that the function of the court is not to achieve parity of assets but proper division. The court look at the way the assets arose and how they were treated during the marriage. Once Hughs pre-marriage house was used as the family home it would usually be divided 50/50 between the spouses unless it was an extremely short marriage.

In relation to the pre-marriage business, it would depend on what happened this during the marriage e.g. if Fiona worked in it or looked after the children to allow Hugh to spend time in building up his business this would be an argument for giving Fiona a share in that business. The question to be asked would be has this business become matrimonialised and this would be a matter for the Judge to decide based on the facts and what happened with the business during the marriage.

Lawquip: I was married by a Judge, I should have asked for a Jury

SHORT AND EASY TO REMEMBER!

Why are snails slow? Because they’re carrying a house on their back.

What’s the smartest insect? A spelling bee!

What does a storm cloud wear under his raincoat? Thunderwear.

What is fast, loud and crunchy? A rocket chip.

How does the ocean say hi? It waves!

What do you call a couple of chimpanzees sharing an Amazon account? PRIME-mates.

Why did the teddy bear say no to dessert? Because she was stuffed.

Why did the soccer player take so long to eat dinner? Because he thought he couldn’t use his hands.

Name the kind of tree you can hold in your hand? A palm tree!

What has ears but cannot hear? A cornfield.

What’s a cat’s favorite dessert? A bowl full of mice-cream.

Where did the music teacher leave her keys? In the piano!

What did the policeman say to his hungry stomach? “Freeze. You’re under a vest.”

A CHILD ASKED HIS FATHER

“How were people born?” So his father said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on.” The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, “We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now.” The child ran back to his father and said, “You lied to me!” His father replied, “No, your mom was talking about her side of the family.”

TOO MANY CATS!

Teacher: “If I gave you 2 cats and another 2 cats and another 2, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “No, listen carefully... If I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples, and another two apples and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Six.” Teacher: “Good. Now if I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven!” Teacher: “Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!”

Johnny: “Because I’ve already got a freaking cat!”

KERRY FC MATCH REPORT

Matchday 7

SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division Kerry FC 0–1 UCD AFC Kerry FC returned to Mounthawk Park after the break, hoping to build on last week’s win over Wexford. However, it was UCD who claimed the points in a tight affair decided by an unfortunate own goal.

First Half

Early chances fell to UCD’s Brian McManus and Kerry’s Joe Adams, but both sides struggled to create clear-cut openings. Kerry’s Tim-Oliver Hiemer made key saves to deny UCD. Despite UCD having more possession, Kerry had the better chances, including efforts from Daniel Okwute.

Second Half

Kerry nearly took the lead through Sean O’Connell, but moments later he turned from hero to unlucky villain, putting the ball into his own net. The game turned scrappy with ten yellow cards shown. UCD’s Cailloe almost sealed it, while late Kerry pressure from Honkola, Teahan, and Brookwell failed to yield an equaliser. UCD’s Clancy saw red in injury time. A disappointing loss for Kerry, who next face Treaty United in the Munster Derby on Friday.

Next up: Glenbeigh/Glencar (away) – all support welcome!
