MTU honours former President Dr Sean Mc Bride

Education is central to any progress in society, and it is skills not tax regimes that attract foreign investment to Ireland, according to former European Commissioner,Mairead McGuinness. She said that nothing liberating will come from a trade war and that the poorest countries in the world will suffer most. She described any potential threat to the pharmaceutical chain as immoral. Ms Mc Guinness said that Ireland

and other EU countries must respond calmly and collectively. She said that in order to bring about change you must listen to others with respect and use words wisely. Ms Mc Guinness said that the EU must focus on competitiveness and improve financing and that it is a time for cool heads, and strong leadership where morals and ethics matter. She was speaking at a lecture in the MTU Kerry Campus to honour its former President Dr Sean

MTU`s 1o year Plan!

Munster Technological University has unveiled its 10-year sustainability strategy at the MTU Kerry North Campus on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025. Titled the MTU Sustainability Strategy 2025-2035, the roadmap aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and forms a key pillar of the university’s Strategic Plan, Our Shared Vision. The strategy sets out a framework to weave sustainability into every facet of university life, aiming to transform MTU into a Living Lab for sustainability and foster collaboration among students, staff, and regional partners in addressing global and local challenges.

Professor Maggie Cusack, MTU President, emphasized, “Our 10-year Sustainability Strategy is designed to inspire action, promote innovation,

and ensure that sustainability becomes integral to the way we teach, research, engage, and operate.” A major element of the plan is capacity building, with MTU staff undergoing sustainability training supported by a “train-the-trainer” initiative. The strategy also integrates the Sustainable Development Goals into MTU’s academic programs, administration, and research activities.

Brendan O’Connell, the university’s Climate Action & Sustainability Champion, stated that MTU must lead by example and prepare graduates to tackle complex global issues. Louise Byrne, MTU’s Sustainability Project Coordinator, added that the strategy empowers the entire campus community to be proactive change agents.

Off -field distraction does enough to lose Kerry FC vital points

Kerry FC travelled to Limerick for their second Munster Derby of the season but suffered a 3-0 defeat to Treaty United at the Markets Field on Friday evening.

The game began with early drama as Treaty were awarded a penalty just eight minutes in, but TimOliver Hiemer pulled off a superb

save to deny Lee Devitt. Kerry’s best first-half chance came when Daniel Okwute’s cross was nearly converted by Joe Adams, but his effort was cleared off the line. A second Treaty penalty was awarded just before half-time, and David Tarmey converted to give the home side the lead.

In the second half, Treaty controlled proceedings. Nikodem Kozlowski slotted home their second goal on 56 minutes, and former Kerry player Trpimir Vrljicak sealed the win with a third late on.

Despite the return of striker Ryan Kelliher, Kerry struggled to create chances. It has been a tough week

for Kerry FC as a club and it was evident it had taken its toll on the players on Friday night. They now look to bounce back at home next Friday against Athlone Town in Mounthawk Park.( photos by Luke O’Mahony)

NEW JACKSON – aka David Kitt Plays Roundy’s Bar Tralee

Acclaimed musician and sonic innovator David Kitt returns as New Jackson with OOPS! ...POP, his most energetic and euphoric release to date. Known for his genre-blending style and electronic craftsmanship, Kitt has spent over a decade developing the unique sound of New Jackson. His 2017 debut From Night to Night introduced hypnotic, late-night grooves, and OOPS! ...POP builds on that foundation with sharper, more immediate energy.

Recorded over five years in three countries, the album captures Kitt’s deep love for electronic music. It blends pulsating rhythms, lush synths, and soaring melodies in a sound that feels both spontaneous and finely crafted. Drawing on decades of musical influence, OOPS! ...POP features a stellar lineup of collaborators, including Rita Lynn, Donnacha Costello, Riche Egan (Jape), Yenkee, Kean Kavanagh, Margie Jean Lewis, Meg Cronin, and Fehdah, each adding rich layers to the album’s sonic palette.

The album stands as a bold statement from an artist always evolving, offering a seamless mix of melody, experimentation, and nostalgia.

To mark the release, New Jackson will perform a special all-vinyl DJ set at Roundy’s Bar, Tralee, on Saturday, April 12th, from 9PM to 12AM. Expect a deep dive into the records that shaped his sound across the decades.

Joining him on the night are local DJs Paudi Cronin and Steve Horan, who will bring their signature mix of soul, funk, rhythm & blues, and afrobeat, promising a night of diverse and danceable music. Don’t miss this unique celebration of sound.

Good Friday – The Passion and Crucifixion of Christ

Tralee’s annual Good Friday Pageant returns to the Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Castle Street, on Friday, April 18th at 3pm. This moving depiction of the Passion of Christ is part of the traditional Good Friday ceremony, dramatizing the capture, trial, scourging, and crucifixion of Jesus, as well as the sorrow of his mother Mary and his early followers.

Performed in mime by the Parish Liturgy Drama Group and narrated throughout, the pageant features over 40 local actors aged 10 to 80. They have been rehearsing for weeks in preparation. The

performance will be enriched by the voices of up to 30 members of the St John the Baptist Parish Choir, directed by Michael O’Shea. First staged in St John’s 23 years ago, the pageant was written and inspired by Fr Pat Ahern, founder of Siamsa Tíre, whose memoir Forging the Dance – Eachtraí Mo Shaoil was recently published. The pageant has also been performed in other local parishes, including Castleisland. For those unable to attend, the ceremony will be available on the parish website, along with a televised version aired by RTÉ 14 years ago. Early arrival is advised for the best seating.

Other Easter Week services at St John’s include the Blessing of Palms on Palm Sunday, the Last Supper Mass on Holy Thursday, the Easter Vigil on Saturday night with the

Honouring a Revolutionary: Dan Mulvihill’s Memoir Published

Hundreds gathered at Muintir na Tíre Hall, Milltown, to celebrate the life of Dan Mulvihill, a key figure in Ireland’s fight for independence. His long-awaited memoir, “One Man’s Ireland: Memoirs of Dan Mulvihill, Maverick Republican”, has now been published by historian Dr Owen O’Shea through Merrion Press. Mulvihill, an IRA commander and lifelong republican, wrote his 20,000-word autobiography before his death in 1985 but never saw it published. The book details his involvement in pivotal 20th-century events, from opposing the AngloIrish Treaty to serving as a prisoner, hunger striker, intelligence officer,

and close ally of Éamon de Valera. Stephen Rae, former Group Editorin-Chief of Independent News & Media, was the guest speaker. He and his father, David, interviewed Mulvihill in 1984, preserving his untold stories.

The launch brought together descendants of Old IRA and Cumann na mBan members, featuring music, poetry, and storytelling. O’Shea emphasized the book’s importance, saying, “Mulvihill was a pivotal figure, both in Kerry and nationally.”

“One Man’s Ireland” is now available in Kerry bookshops and online at owenoshea.ie.
