Curranes National School and Cara Credit Union Cultivate a Greener Future
The students of Curranes National School, Castleisland, embraced nature as they got their hands dirty in the school garden, thanks to Cara Credit Union’s biodiversity initiative. The school was one of five selected for the program, which promotes ecological awareness and hands-on outdoor learning. Now in its third year, the initiative, run in collaboration with Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Park, teaches children the importance of protecting the environment.
School principal, Emer Nelligan, expressed her delight at being chosen:
“Children love outdoor learning, and we’re grateful to Cara Credit Union for providing trees, fruit bushes, and expert guidance. This program helps instill ecological awareness and sustainable habits in our students, and we look forward to future harvests.”
Philip Lynch, Marketing Officer with Cara Credit Union, highlighted the project’s impact:
“At Cara Credit Union, we are committed to supporting initiatives
that address climate change and promote environmental protection. By working with local schools and Tralee Bay Wetlands, we are investing in a greener future for our communities.”
The initiative was designed in collaboration with Mary O’Connor, Manager of Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Park.
She praised the Credit Union’s commitment to biodiversity and sustainability, noting:
“Our ecologists introduced students to soil science and tree planting— skills that will benefit both their lives and their school environment.
We’re thrilled to see Cara Credit Union championing long-term
environmental education.”
The selected schools for this term include Curranes National School, Scoil Naomh Gobnait Dún Chaoin, Scoil Eoin Balloonagh, Glounaguillagh National School, and Bouleensheire National School. Through this initiative, students will not only learn about nature but also witness their trees and fruit bushes flourish for years to come.

Kerry FC Fall to Narrow
Defeat Against Bray Wanderers
Kerry FC suffered a 0-1 loss to Bray Wanderers at Mounthawk Park on Friday night. The home side, eager for their first-ever league win against Bray, showed resilience but couldn’t find an equaliser.
Bray struck early, with Calum Costello scoring in the second minute following a defensive error. Kerry responded well, creating several chances, but Bray goalkeeper James Corcoran made crucial saves, denying Luke Palmer, Kevin
Williams, and Chris McQueen. A strong penalty claim for Kerry in the 28th minute was controversially waved away.
The second half continued with Kerry pressing, but Chris McQueen’s goal-bound header was cleared off the line—again with no penalty awarded. Mathyas Randriamamy made his debut, producing a fine save, but Kerry couldn’t break through.
Despite a valiant effort, Kerry FC remains winless since their openingnight victory. They now face back-to-

Minister Norma Foley attends tourism event in House of Lords to celebrate St Patrick’s Day 2025
Tourism Ireland co-sponsored a special reception in the House of Lords in London – as part of an extensive programme of St Patrick’s Day 2025 promotional activity in Great Britain and elsewhere around the world. The event, celebrating British-Irish relations, was attended by members of the House of Commons and House of Lords, as well as leaders of the Irish community living in London and influential British travel trade and
media contacts.
St Patrick’s Day offers a unique opportunity for tourism to the island of Ireland. Earlier this week, Tourism Ireland unveiled its extensive programme of St Patrick’s Week promotions, with this time of year both attracting visitors to the island and important for teeing up bookings for the season ahead through the heightened profile created.
Billy say “Leaving Cert Grades Inflation to Ease in 2025 as CAO Points Drop”
Billy Ryle, Kerrys top Career Guidance Counsellor says ¨The post-marking adjustment of Leaving Cert exam scripts is set to gradually decrease, aiming to return to 2019 levels. This adjustment, introduced in 2020 due to COVID-19 disruptions, has led to unsustainable grade inflation over the past five years. In 2025, the average post-marking adjustment will be reduced to 5.5%, down from 7.5% in recent years. As a result, Leaving Cert results will be lower, and students will gain an average of 43 CAO points,
compared to 60 points last year.
Last year’s 7.5% adjustment increased 68% of grades, giving students a significant advantage in CAO applications. However, most of those students will have already progressed through college, easing competition for the 2025 class. The addition of promised extra college places should also help level the playing field.
This long-overdue adjustment aims to eliminate the random selection lottery, which has unfairly prevented some students from securing their
preferred courses despite achieving maximum points. It should also help reduce first-year college dropout rates, as inflated grades have sometimes led students into courses they were unprepared for. In simple terms, 2025 results will average 5.5% above 2019 levels and 2% below 2024. The ultimate goal is to restore a system where grades accurately reflect a student’s true performance.¨
Billy Ryle – Career Guidance Counsellor & Educational Commentator
Deirdre Fraser; Ciaran O’Brien, Champ; Norma Foley TD, Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth; HE Martin Fraser, Ambassador of Ireland to the United Kingdom; Fleur Anderson MP, Parliamentary UnderSecretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office; and Siobhan McManamy, Tourism Ireland, at a St Patrick’s reception in the House of Lords in London cosponsored by Tourism Ireland.

Fred Answers Your Mattress Questions As Lots Clears Its Warehouse Stock!
Hello everyone, it’s me Fred. I hope you are keeping all well out there. I would like to share with you some questions I have been asked by our customers coming to our ongoing Mega Mattress Warehouse Clearout at Lots Furnishings Tralee store in Dromtacker on the Listowel Road .
1” Fred , I am looking to purchase a double mattress today, but the one I like is the king size on display. Does it come in a 4ft 6? “
YES, It does. The common mattress sizes are 3ft (Small), 4ft (Small Double), 4ft6 (Double), 5ft (King) and 6ft (Super King), we have selected to display this particular mattress in 5ft. Mattresses also can be ordered off sizes if required.
2. “ Fred , Which mattress would you recommend which is the most popular in your store?”
We don’t recommend any particular mattress; it depends on your requirements. The most important thing to remember when choosing a mattress is COMFORT and
SUPPORT.
3. “ Fred , What mattresses do you sell in your shop?”
We sell Irish made King Koil high quality mattresses and affordable range mattresses. Our main goal is to help our customers to invest in quality mattresses, and achieve a good night sleep. A mattress such as King Koil comes with a 10 year warranty. That’s why we organise Mattress Promotion events a few times a year.
4. “ Fred , I bought a mattress but its dipping in the middle and it’s not level anymore? “
There could be a few reasons why the top layers are not settled
down properly. It could be a bed, base or a faulty mattress itself. We recommend to rotate and flip (if flippable) mattress every 2 weeks for the first 6 months after that, 6 times a year. By doing that mattress fillings distribute evenly.
5. “ Fred ...A Divan base or bed frame? which one will give the best support?
Both a divan base and a bed frame with appropriately spaced slats can provide support for a mattress. The choice between them may depend on personal preference, style, and other factors such as storage options or room aesthetics.
“Kerry... the friendliest county in Ireland” says the Boys!
The Kingdom of Kerry Greenways marks its two-year anniversary, celebrating the transformation of historic railway lines into a thriving scenic network that has drawn thousands to Tralee and North Kerry. Adding to this milestone, the Greenways will receive €8.25 million in funding this year as part of a €67 million national investment in greenways and Active Travel infrastructure through Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Since opening, the Greenways have boosted local tourism and the economy, benefiting bike hire businesses, hospitality outlets, and year-round visitors. The popular Fenit Park Run has grown into a key event, fostering community spirit and attracting even more participants.
The Greenways seamlessly combine recreation, culture, and sustainability, offering visitors a unique experience.
A recent visit by The Gourmet Boys, food enthusiasts from Northern Ireland, showcased this blend as they cycled the Greenway and explored local cuisine. They praised Kerry’s hospitality, calling it the friendliest county in Ireland.
A spokesperson for Kerry County Council highlighted the achievement:
“This anniversary is a testament to the power of reimagining our past for the future. What was once an unused railway line is now a thriving route of discovery, adventure, and sustainability.”
With growing visitor numbers and further investment, the future of the Kingdom of Kerry Greenways looks even brighter. For more information, visit

DENTAL CORNER

Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. They are small, biocompatible titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone, where they fuse with the bone to create a strong and stable foundation for a replacement tooth or teeth.
One of the biggest advantages of dental implants is their natural look and feel. Unlike other tooth replacement options, such as dentures or bridges, dental implants are designed to mimic the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. They are custom-made to match the color and shape of your existing teeth, and because they are anchored securely in the jawbone, they feel just like your natural teeth. Another advantage of dental implants is their durability. With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, making them a cost-effective long-term solution for tooth replacement. They also don't require any special maintenance or cleaning beyond regular brushing and flossing, unlike dentures or bridges, which require extra care and attention. Dental implants also offer several health benefits. When a tooth is missing, the surrounding teeth can shift out of place, causing problems with your bite and potentially leading to further tooth loss. Dental implants help to prevent this by filling in the gap and providing support for the surrounding teeth. Finally, dental implants can also improve your overall quality of life. With a full set of teeth, you can enjoy your favorite foods again and feel more confident in your smile. Plus, because dental implants are so durable, you don't have to worry about embarrassing slips or shifts that can occur with dentures or bridges.
Overall, dental implants are an excellent choice for anyone looking to replace missing teeth. With their natural look and feel, durability, and health benefits, they offer a long-lasting and effective solution for restoring your smile and your confidence.
Please contact Susan Crean dental for consultations with our implantologist on 066 7117577.

FLYING HIGH !
A plane was flying through some very rough turbulence. The passengers were getting nervous, so the flight attendant began to reassure them.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “This plane is built to withstand much worse than this.”
Just then, there was a loud noise and the plane began to shake violently. The flight attendant rushed to the cockpit to ask the captain what was going on.
“I’m not sure,” he said. “But I think we just lost one of our engines.”
The flight attendant went back to the passengers and said, “Don’t worry, folks. The captain says we can still fly with three engines. It just means we’ll be a little delayed.”
One of the passengers looked up and asked, “If we lose another engine, how long will the delay be?”
The flight attendant smiled and replied, “Oh, not long. We’ll be plummeting to the ground at that point.”

BASKETBALL NOTES
Warriors Fall to Éanna, Ending Top-Two Hopes
Super League Round 23
Griffith College Éanna 98 - Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 85
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors’ hopes for a top-two finish were dashed after a tough 98-85 loss to Griffith College Éanna. With this result, Warriors will likely finish third or fourth, securing a home quarter-final but facing an away semi-final if they progress.
Despite a strong start with Jokubaitis, Leonard, and Stephens leading the charge, Éanna controlled the second half, stretching their lead to 71-60 by the third quarter. Warriors fought back, but Éanna’s sharp shooting, particularly from Crawford and Andabaka, sealed their victory.
Super League Round 24
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 98 - Bright St. Vincent’s 83
Warriors ended the regular season on a high, securing their 16th win with a 95-83 victory over Bright St. Vincent’s. A dominant third quarter (32 points) paved the way, with Stephens, Jokubaitis, and Adon leading the charge.
The game saw a serious injury to Cian Sullivan, but Warriors maintained control, with MVP Mark Stephens sealing the win with clutch free throws. Warriors now await their quarter-final opponent on March 22nd.

Expanding Special Education: 16 New Classes for Kerry
Minister Norma Foley T.D. has welcomed the creation of 16 new special classes in Kerry for the upcoming school year, providing places for 96 children with special educational needs. These classes, each supporting six pupils, one teacher, and one special needs assistant, will be spread across primary and post-primary schools, including Lissivigeen NS, Listellick Primary, Presentation Secondary (Castleisland & Killorglin), and St. Brendan’s College. This expansion brings Kerry’s total to 112 special classes. Minister Foley expressed gratitude to local schools and emphasized her dedication to improving access to education. Nationally, the government is introducing 400 new special classes and 300 additional special school places, supported by 768 new special education teachers and 1,600 special needs assistants. School building and refurbishment projects are also underway to accommodate these expansions. Minister Foley reaffirmed her commitment to prioritizing special education, working alongside Ministers Helen McEntee and Michael Moynihan to ensure inclusive education for all children.
