Minister for Children, Disability and Equality and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has welcomed the move by 21 Kerry schools to promote a smartphonefree childhood.
These schools in the Killarney region are working with parents and encouraging them to come together and support the policy of a smartphone-free childhood experience.
This is in line with the Keeping Childhood Smartphone Free policy launched by Minister Foley during her term as Minister for Education.
Minister Foley visited St Oliver’s National School in Killarney to officially launch the policy with all the schools taking part.
She said: “I was absolutely thrilled to meet with students and principals from the 21 schools. It’s a phenomenal show of leadership by these schools as they work together to keep childhood smartphone-free.”
Schools, parents’ associations and students around the country have been coming together to adopt similar “smartphone free” polices to improve children’s socialisation and to reduce the risks of online bullying and exposure to inappropriate material online.
The Keeping Childhood Smartphone Free policy has also been backed by Vodafone, Three, Eir, Tesco Mobile, Virgin Media, and An Post Mobile - companies with a combined 95%
market.
Minister Foley said: “There is growing evidence students who are stuck on their smartphones and their social media accounts for long periods of time experience less physical activity, poorer sleep, and
less concentration in class. Delaying the purchase of a smartphone for children is very important for young people and their mental health wellbeing. I want to express my thanks to everyone involved in this smartphone-free policy in these 21 Kerry schools.”

Kerry Cancer Support Group is inviting the people of Kerry and beyond to take part in a heartwarming fundraising and awareness campaign—Square to Share. Inspired by local radio presenter Kaya Flynn’s newfound love for crocheting, the initiative encourages individuals to create handmade blankets for service users of the Healthlink transport service. The campaign asks participants to crochet or knit four-inch squares while making a donation to the charity. Breda from Kerry Cancer Support Group shared, “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together, learn a new skill, and make a tangible difference in the lives of those using our service.”
To support participants, two workshops will be held where volunteers will guide attendees in crafting their squares:
• February 22nd at 2 PM – The Rose Hotel
• March 15th at 2 PM – Kate Kearney’s Cottage
Anyone interested in attending can register with Breda or Trish at 0667195560.
Completed squares can be dropped off at Kerry Cancer Support Group’s Centre at Maine Street, Tralee (V92 D567). Before being stitched into blankets by the Milltown Knit and Natter group, the team hopes to create a giant blanket to cover the Healthlink transport bus—a powerful symbol of warmth, support, and community spirit.
Join us in crafting a hug from a friend you haven’t met yet—one stitch at a time!

Tralee’s first standalone school-age childcare centre, Before the Bell – The Lodge, Balloonagh, is now open for registrations. Housed in a beautifully restored historic building dating back to 1894, this centre is the latest initiative from the Quirke family, pioneers in early childhood education in Ireland.
Susan Quirke-Crowley, AIBF Business All-Star Educator of the Year 2025, shared her excitement about the launch. “Before the Bell – The Lodge provides a warm, nurturing environment where children can explore creative, handson learning before and after school.” Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, the centre features
specialized ateliers, including a Music Atelier, Science and Light Atelier, Cosy Sensory Area, Art Atelier, and a Black & White Gallery for showcasing children’s artwork. Located at the entrance of Scoil Eoin, it offers early drop-off services and a “Stay & Play” hour for junior and senior infants, allowing for convenient sibling pickups and easing school traffic. NCS Discounts make it accessible and affordable for families.
Continuing the Quirke family’s legacy in education, Susan, Maureen Quirke, Caroline Crowley, and Helena Wallace Dowling have led innovations like Mounthawk Montessori & Busy Bees Nursery
(1999), Maureen’s Childcare Centre (2003), Oak Park Montessori School (2022), and The Casa Dei Bambini Outdoor Reggio School (2023), opened by Minister Norma Foley. Before the Bell – The Lodge ensures a smooth transition from early years education to primary school. “We’re thrilled to support both learning and family convenience,” said Maureen Quirke. Enrolments are open for 2025, 2026, and 2027.

Some wisdom teeth can be removed a general dentist if they are fully through the gum in the mouth. However, most require a surgical extraction. The surgical extraction of impacted wisdom teeth is often necessary when they are causing pain, infection, or other dental complications. The procedure typically involves the removal of wisdom teeth that have not fully erupted into the mouth or are positioned incorrectly (impacted). Thhis procedure is done by a specialist or oral surgeon.
Indications for Surgical Extraction of Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Procedure for Surgical Extraction of Impacted Wisdom Teeth:
1. Pain or Infection:
• Persistent pain, tenderness, or swelling around the impacted tooth.
• Frequent infections or abscesses in the area of the wisdom teeth (often due to food or bacteria getting trapped in the gum tissue).
2. Cysts or Tumors:
• The formation of cysts or tumors around the impacted tooth, which can damage the surrounding bone and tissues.
3. Damage to Adjacent Teeth:
• If the impacted wisdom tooth is pushing against the neighboring molar, it can cause damage to the neighboring tooth (decay or root resorption).
4. Gum Disease:
• Difficulty cleaning around the impacted tooth can lead to gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis).
5. Tooth Alignment Problems:
• Impacted wisdom teeth can affect the alignment of other teeth, especially if they are attempting to emerge at an angle that pushes against the other molars.
6. Difficulty Opening the Mouth:
• If the impacted tooth is affecting normal mouth function, such as the ability to open the mouth fully.
7. Preventive Measure:
• In some cases, wisdom teeth are removed prophylactically to prevent potential future complications, particularly if they are likely to become impacted later in life.
Recovery and Aftercare:
• Pain Management: Mild to moderate pain and swelling are common after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain medications or prescribed painkillers are usually sufficient.
• Diet: A soft food diet is recommended for several days after surgery to avoid irritation to the surgical site.
• Follow-up: A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled to monitor healing and remove any non-dissolvable stitches.
• Complications: Though rare, complications can include dry socket, infection, nerve injury, or prolonged bleeding.
1. Preoperative Assessment:
• X-rays/CT scan: An evaluation is performed to understand the position of the wisdom teeth, whether they are fully impacted, partially erupted, or trapped under the bone.
• Medical History Review: The dentist or oral surgeon will evaluate your health history, any medications you're on, and any preexisting conditions that might affect the procedure.
2. Local Anesthesia or Sedation:
• Local anesthesia: For minor cases where the wisdom tooth is partially visible, the surgeon may use local anesthesia to numb the area.
• Sedation or General Anesthesia: For impacted wisdom teeth or multiple teeth extractions, sedation or general anesthesia may be used to ensure the patient is comfortable and pain-free.
3. Incision and Exposure:
• The oral surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue over the impacted tooth to expose it. In some cases, part of the bone covering the tooth may need to be removed to access the tooth.
4. Tooth Sectioning:
• If the tooth is particularly large or difficult to remove, the oral surgeon may cut the tooth into smaller sections to make extraction easier and minimize bone removal.
5. Extraction:
• The tooth or tooth sections are carefully extracted from the socket.
6. Cleaning and Stitching:
• After the tooth is removed, the area is cleaned of debris, and the gum is stitched back into place. The stitches may dissolve over time or may need to be removed later.
7. Postoperative Care:
• The surgeon will provide instructions for aftercare to manage pain and reduce the risk of infection. This includes recommendations for swelling control (such as applying ice), taking prescribed pain medications, and using saltwater rinses to promote healing.
• In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection.
