The Wild West: An Authentic New Outfitter’s and Supply Company Opens in Tralee... and its local!

The Benner family, a cornerstone of Tralee’s business community since 1932, has launched an exciting new venture: The Wild West, an outfitter’s and supply company. Now in its fourth generation of family leadership, Adrian Benner and his son Shane have combined their vision, hard work, and deep-rooted heritage to create a standout retail experience.

The journey to The Wild West began modestly. Back in 2017, the Benners introduced the Carhartt brand to their original ‘Small Benners’ store on Bridge Street with just a small, four-foot stand. Over time, Carhartt’s popularity—and demand for the other premium brands they carried—quickly outgrew their original space. When an opportunity arose to relocate to a larger premises in the Abbey Car Park, Adrian and Shane saw their chance to bring a long-held vision to life.

A Labor of Love

The creation of The Wild West store was truly a family affair. Adrian and Shane undertook the entire design and fit-out themselves, often burning the midnight oil to transform their concept into reality. Working late into the evening, after finishing the ‘day job ‘ in

‘Small Benners ‘—sometimes until midnight—they completed the project in just eight weeks.

But the idea had been brewing for years. “We did our market research in the USA, the UK, and closer to home,” Adrian shares. “We had to make a decision: either go for it or give it up. I wanted the store to reflect the brands we stock—warm, authentic, original, rich, and strong. That’s why you’ll find leather couches, rugs on the floor, and a warm, wooden interior that makes the space feel inviting and timeless.”

Celebrating a Heritage of Premium Brands

For the Benners, The Wild West is not just about selling products; it’s about celebrating the brands they’ve proudly stocked for generations. From Stanley, a staple since the 1950s, to Leatherman tools and Victorinox knives, the store reflects a long history of quality craftsmanship. More recently, they’ve embraced newer trends, such as the growth in outdoor cooking products like the Petromax brand, which has seen a surge in popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve grown up with these brands,” Adrian explains. “It’s fantastic to finally showcase them in a space

that does them justice. All these long-established names are now available to view in a state-of-the-art store.”

A Warm Welcome to Tralee

The store’s name, The Wild West, pays homage to its location in the heart of the west of Ireland along the Wild Atlantic Way . Designed to be as visually pleasing as it is functional, the store invites visitors from Tralee, Kerry, and beyond to explore its unique offerings. Adrian and Shane hope their new store will become a destination for those seeking high-quality gear and

a memorable shopping experience. “We’d really like to welcome people to come and view our brand-new store here in Tralee,” Adrian says. “It’s been a labor of love, and we’re delighted with how it has all come together.”

Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a fan of timeless brands, or just curious to see the newest addition to Tralee’s retail landscape, The Wild West promises a shopping experience like no other. Make sure to stop by and experience the Benners’ dedication to quality, heritage, and community firsthand.

This event, funded by Kerry ETB and Solas, showcased the transformative potential of the Supported Employment Model and highlighted Inspired’s innovative work in creating inclusive pathways for people with intellectual disabilities. The lunch brought together a diverse range of local businesses to celebrate the success of supported employment in the region. Inspired shared inspiring success stories and detailed their efforts to provide tailored support for individuals with intellectual disabilities, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the workforce. The organisation also unveiled initiatives encouraging self-employment, particularly in

biodiversity-driven enterprises like eco-crafts and organic food production. Liz Maher, CEO of Inspired, urged employers to embrace creative ways to foster inclusion, emphasizing the benefits for both employees and businesses.

“Inclusive hiring practices unlock untapped potential and foster social equity,” she said.

Keynote speaker Chris English, a European expert in supported employment, outlined the tangible benefits of inclusive hiring. He highlighted how such practices enhance employee retention and build loyal, high-performing teams.

Stephen O’Connell, Lidl Store Manager in Killarney, shared his insights: “Chris English’s presentation underscored how inclusion strengthens company culture. We’re excited to work with Inspired.”

Stephanie Dinham, Career and Programme Coordinator at Inspired, praised the critical role of government and EU support in enabling these transformative programmes.

She encouraged employers to break down barriers, create skill development opportunities, and foster confidence among individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The event also spotlighted selfemployment initiatives, with businesses like Milltown Organic exploring collaborations. Dolores Prendeville, shop owner, remarked,

“This isn’t just about employment; it’s about empowerment and community connection.”

As the event concluded, Stephanie urged employers to “be bold and take the first step toward meaningful change.”

‘None for the Road’ – No Alcohol or Drugs While Driving

Kerry County Council and An Garda Síochána have launched a joint Christmas road safety appeal, “None for the Road,” emphasizing the dangers of drunk and drug-impaired driving. With festive celebrations underway, the campaign aims to prevent tragic accidents.

Statistics highlight the persistent problem: over 7,000 drivers were arrested nationwide by the end of November for driving under the influence, with alcohol accounting

for 56% and drugs for 44% of those arrests.

Increased Garda patrols will be deployed throughout Kerry during the holiday season. Superintendent David Callaghan urges responsible driving, careful journey planning, and safe transportation arrangements for those celebrating. He emphasizes the importance of prioritizing road safety during the festive season.

Kerry County Council is supporting the campaign through various media channels, including local radio, print, online platforms, and social media advertisements in cinemas and supermarkets.

Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh stresses the urgent need to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He strongly advises against even one drink before driving, urging people to arrange

alternative transport such as taxis, buses, or designated drivers.

Driving under the influence risks not only the driver’s life but also the lives of other road users. The message is clear: “none for the road” if you plan to drive.

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors Women’s team began their BIDL campaign with a thrilling double-overtime victory against Tipperary Knights at Presentation School, Thurles, on Sunday. The game was an intense battle, with both teams evenly matched throughout.

The Warriors started strong, with captain Holly O’Brien and Priya O’Donovan leading them to an 8-2 lead. In the second, Priya O’Donovan and Claire O’Mahony regained the lead for the

Warriors, but the Knights answered back. Emily Flynn’s late basket ensured a 27-23 Warriors advantage at halftime.

The third quarter saw Tori Spencer ignite for the Knights, scoring nine points and giving the hosts a narrow 32-31 edge. The teams traded baskets, with the Knights holding a slim 38-37 lead entering the final quarter. Spencer extended the lead early in the fourth, but the Warriors fought back with scores from O’Brien, Flynn, O’Mahony, and Casey. With a minute remaining, the Knights tied the game 48-48, forcing overtime.

On Thursday December 5th, 41 students from the MTU Kerry Campus were honoured for their sporting achievements at a special Sports Scholarships awards evening. This event has always been one of the highlights on the MTU sports calendar, and once again this year’s ceremony saw another large crowd of invited guests, staff, students and family members join the award recipients in the pre-Christmas celebrations.

Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate a high standard of sports performance and achievement. The students receiving awards represented a broad spectrum of sporting disciplines. Speaking at the ceremony, both Prof. Christine Cross, Vice President Academic Affairs & Registrar, and Jimmy Denihan, Chairperson of the MTU Governing Body congratulated the award recipients. MTU has a long history of sporting achievement, and they welcomed

those students who were now joining an exclusive group. “The sports scholarships are designed to support students in pursing and excelling in their sporting as well as their academic goals at MTU,” said Prof. Cross.

Vera takes a well-earned step back after 32 Years

Vera O’Leary, Manager of the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (KRSAC), retires after 32 years. Her career reflects the evolution of services for sexual violence survivors, from a time of victim-blaming and limited support to a more professional, acknowledged sector. O’Leary highlights improved reporting processes and increased survivor reporting, though acknowledging ongoing needs for attitudinal change and awareness. She expresses gratitude for the survivors who taught her, her dedicated colleagues, and the supportive board of directors who fostered KRSAC’s growth. O’Leary passes the torch to Kristy McFetridge, confident in her successor’s ability to lead the Centre’s continued success, advising her to maintain compassion and dedication. O’Leary’s legacy is one of unwavering commitment to supporting survivors and building a safer community.

and much more. He encouraged the students to continue to strive for excellence in their sport and in their education and to always appreciate and lean on their support network of family and friends during the highs and the lows.

The MTU Kerry Campus Sports Scholarships are currently open for applications, please contact Sports Officer, Jennifer Healy for further details.

You just got to Give BODY PUMP a Go! KDYS rebrands to Kerry Community Youth Service

On Wednesday 11th December 2024, the leading youth organisation in Kerry hosted a number of activities to celebrate the launch of its revised Constitution and new name. Following extensive consultation with young people, volunteers, stakeholders and the local community, it was decided that the organisation previously known as Kerry Diocesan Youth Service would become Kerry Community Youth Service. This is the first revision of the charity’s Constitution

Led by expert instructors, participants are guided through scientifically proven movements, with the added boost of motivating music and encouragement, ensuring they achieve results far beyond what they could alone. Central to BODYPUMP’s effectiveness is The Rep Effect, a groundbreaking approach to resistance training that guarantees total body transformation. This program is designed to sculpt shoulders, define arms, strengthen and tone legs, firm glutes, and tighten the core, making it the ultimate choice for anyone seeking a comprehensive and effective fitness solution.

• For a BODYPUMP class, bring

comfortable workout clothes, supportive shoes, a water bottle, and a sweat towel. The weight bar, plates, and step you’ll use during the class are provided.

• BODYPUMP is for all fitness levels. Start with light weights or just a bar, attend 1–2 classes a week, and gradually build to a full session. Your strength and fitness will improve over time.

• For best results, do 2–3 BODYPUMP classes per week with rest days in between. Pair with 2–3 cardio sessions to shape and tone effectively.

• If you’re pregnant, consult your doctor or midwife first. Inform your instructor before class, and they’ll provide modifications to ensure your safety.

• Catriona Cantillon , Manager etc ...

since the organisation was founded. The process was informed by Charity Regulator guidance in relation to good governance and was an opportunity to specifically name youth participation and climate justice as priority commitments.

The programme for the day included a formal launch in KCYS Killarney, hosted by young people which honoured the past, reflected on what community youth work looks like today, acknowledged the contribution of volunteers and

information was shared about exciting plans the organisation has for the future. (see Programme)

Following the formal event, all KCYS Youth Centres around the County opened their doors to young people who took part in a wide range of activities to celebrate the youth organisation’s new name culminating in a workshop with Bernard Casey in the Killarney Centre. Berni Smyth, CEO of KCYS commented, ‘We are delighted to launch our new name. The consultation process has also

given us an opportunity to reflect on what community youth work means in Ireland and in Kerry today. As a member organisation of Youth Work Ireland, KCYS is committed to the national campaign ‘Youth Work for All’ which seeks recognition of all young people’s right to local and accessible youth work services and spaces which strongly echoes the view of the young people who took part in this process.’

KERINS O’RAHILLYS GAA NOTES

Junior League Division 1 Final

Kerins O’Rahillys 2-12 - John Mitchels 0-06

Kerins O’Rahillys secured the Junior 1 League title with a commanding win over John Mitchels, sponsored by Lee Strand. Facing a strong breeze, Darragh O’Connor led the charge with early scores, including a brilliant goal after a pass from Conor Hayes. Defenders Donagh Buckley, Stephen Nix, and Padraig Griffin ensured Mitchels struggled to gain possession. At halftime, O’Rahillys led 2-05 to 0-02. Despite a more competitive second half, Mitchels’ missed opportunities allowed O’Rahillys to maintain their lead, with Conor O’Sullivan adding crucial points. Captain Fenton Collins lifted the trophy, a testament to the collective effort of all players and substitutes.
