MERRY Christmas &
Wishing You a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year
Wow, what a year 2024 has been! We’re incredibly grateful for all the support from our readers, advertisers, and everyone who’s made this year so special. Tralee’s buzzing, and we’re so excited for what’s coming next.
Earlier this year, we switched up our tagline – remember “What’s Happening in Tralee’ ? ..the line below Tralee Advertiser ? Well, we’re now all about “Good News Only!” We have always believed in the transformative power of positivity within the media ,a trait so often skimped over by mainstream media. Its really made a difference. People love picking up the magazine (or checking us out online) because it’s a feel-good read, filled with community spirit. And boy, have we got lots of good news to share! 2024 has been amazing for Tralee: new businesses popping up, exciting developments in the town centre, and huge projects like the €330 million Astellas pharmaceutical development bringing jobs and opportunity to the whole North Kerry area. Plus, after a bit of a quiet spell, housing is finally booming again – more families, more energy!
What’s in store for 2025? Even more good stuff! Think massive GAA matches bringing Dublin and Armagh fans to town,In the Spring , the MTU expansion strengthening our community, and the Greenway getting the marketing boost it deserves. We even estimate that 30-50 new businesses opened in the Tralee area alone this year! While natural closures are part of the business cycle, it’s clear that Tralee is a town on the rise, bursting with entrepreneurial energy and ambition.
A big shout-out to our incredible Chamber Alliance, especially its energetic president, Stephen Stack, for their amazing work supporting our local businesses. And of course, huge thanks to:
* **Our contributors:** You keep us fresh and relevant!
* **Our photographers:** both amateur & professional, John and Martin Cleary, Dominick Walsh, Moss Joe Brown, Michelle Breen Crean, Don McMonagle, Liam Ryan, and everyone else who sends us stunning photos – you’re the best!
* **Our amazing team at Kingdom Printers (The Keanes & Co) and Rafal from Expose Design:** You make the magic happen every week!
To all our advertisers and distributors – thanks for being part of the team! And a big thank you to everyone who sends us articles, poems, stories, photos and more. Keep those submissions coming!
We’re taking a short break now to recharge, but we’ll be back in January 2025, ready to bring you even more great news from Tralee. Until then, have a wonderful festive season – and remember to support local businesses! They’re the heart of our community.
Chris & Colette

Kerry FC spreads Christmas joy to sick children in University Hospital Kerry
First Team Players, Management and Club staff spent Tuesday afternoon in the company of children as the club called into the Children’s Ward at University Hospital Kerry for their annual visit. Now a Christmas tradition in Kerry FC, first-team stalwarts Sean McGrath and Darragh Foley, First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy, Sporting Director Billy Dennehy and Media Officer Ivan Hurley called to the Cashel Ward in UHK in Tralee. The players gifted children with Kerry FC merchandise and gifts to make sure they were the envy of the house this Christmas time.
Now in its third year, the annual Kerry FC visit to the Children’s Ward in UHK always brings joy to families
who need it most this time of year. As uncertainty can remain regarding children spending Christmas at home or in hospital, the club’s visit formed a small few minutes of comfort to the children. The Christmas visit is another example of Kerry FC’s dedication to the community in Tralee and the wider county. Last year’s Christmas food drive was a huge success while the Charity Legends game last February raised nearly €40,000 for the Fitzgerald Family.
Speaking after the visit, Kerry FC Media Officer Ivan Hurley said, “The Christmas visit to UHK is one of my personal highlights every year. It’s very easy for us to get caught up in on-field activities on a daily

basis, but trips like these just make you stop and think again. I would like to thank the fantastic nurses in the Cashel ward for facilitating the visit, and I hope the club’s visit
to the hospital gave families some well-earned festive spirit a week out to Christmas.”

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER
MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Sabina and Michael are racing around online and in person shopping trying to get last minute Santa Presents involving toys for their four children and gifts for family. They are wondering what they should look out for in terms of their consumer rights.
Whatever Sabina and Michael buy it should be of merchantable quality, fit for purpose and as described and should be able to do what it says on the packaging.
These consumer rights apply to them as purchasers, so it is important to ensure that the retailer is clear that it is a gift and the giftee has these rights as well. Ideally obtaining a gift receipt would be important and would make it clear that the giftee has the consumer rights as well. In relation to online sales there is a 14-day cooling off period with most items, but this won’t apply at Christmas usually because it may be beyond that period that it is clear the item is unsuitable. Many retailers offer a 28-day cooling off period effectively whereby you can return the item not only where it is faulty or defective but also where it does not fit or is unsuitable.
If an item is bought in the EU strong consumer rights apply but
these do not apply outside the EU and Britain so beware the use of international sites for that reason. It may not be possible to do return or refunds.
In relation to toys make sure that the toys have the CE mark to show they have passed certain standards and make sure the toys are age applicable. In relation to clothes for Christmas check the label to make sure they are fire resistant. Check the product recalls/safety check on the CCPC site to make sure that any of the toys you are planning to buy are on the recalls/dangerous list.
If the item is not as described or totally unsatisfactory when it arrives it may be possible to send it back and do a chargeback on a card so, look out for this if one has to send an item back.
Gift vouchers should last 5 years but be careful with vouchers for experiences or other items that may have a specific time limit on it. Have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year 2025
Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts.” – Janice Maeditere

Situated just over 3km from Tralee town center, the range spans several acres of picturesque grounds and offers top-notch facilities, including a brand-new all-weather outdoor
bay. Essential amenities such as ample parking and restrooms make it a convenient and welcoming space for golfers of all levels, whether they are seasoned players or complete beginners.

Kerry County Council Schools Road Safety Art Calendar winners
Twelve primary school students who were winners in this year’s Kerry County Council Road Safety Art Calendar Art competition were presented with a plaque and calendars for their school by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Brendán Fitzgerald and the Director of Services for Roads and Transport, Frank Hartnett. The presentations were made at a special award ceremony held in County Buildings on Monday. The Cathaoirleach congratulated the students for their efforts in highlighting road safety and said: “Seeing all the work that has been put into each entry, each category, all the detail, colours and slogans used to promote road safety in Kerry is wonderful. Road safety is a very important subject, it’s a very important topic of conversation and an extremely important rule to follow, especially as the students get older and get more used to using the roads in the future”.
Frank Hartnett, Director of Service for Roads & Transport said: “I am delighted to see all the creativity and artwork done to promote road safety. To have such a good idea of what road safety means today, and how the story of road safety should be told is unique for their age groups”.
The council’s road safety team received hundreds of entries from schools across the county for the annual art competition which is an important tradition in Kerry County Council’s road safety promotions plan. Kerry County Council’s Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh said the calibre of work that was put into the calendars was excellent and he praised the 4th, 5th and 6th class students on their achievements and entries.
Mr. Keogh also thanked his colleagues Ann Marie Crean, Margaret O’Sullivan, John Joe Canty and Caroline Lyons for their work and assistance in preparation for the
calendars and the award ceremony.
“A lot of work goes on behind the scenes in planning and preparing for the annual road safety calendar competition and the award ceremony for the winning students, and I think its one of the nicer jobs we get to do in road safety each year, and it’s that bit more special because it involves the students themselves” he said.
Following the students’ presentations, another special

Not one but Two Parades Light Up our Town last weekend
Last weekend, the town of Tralee transformed into a sparkling winter wonderland, holding not one but two enchanting Santa’s Magical Fantasy Christmas parades that brought joy and light to all who gathered. Despite the wintry weather, the town buzzed with excitement and festive cheer as families, friends, and visitors turned out in force to celebrate this special season.
On Saturday evening, as the clock struck 7pm, the magic began. A spectacular procession of lights set off from Rock Street, winding its way through the heart of Tralee—down Bridge Street—before culminating on The Mall, where the festivities reached a dazzling crescendo. Even as rain sprinkled the streets, it couldn’t dampen the spirits of those who came to witness this extraordinary display of Christmas magic. Bundled up in coats and scarves, the community stood together, their faces illuminated by twinkling lights and the warmth of festive spirit.
But the magic didn’t stop there. On Sunday afternoon, as if by Christmas miracle, the weather brightened and Tralee was blessed with a crisp, dry day—perfect for the second parade. At 3pm, the procession began anew, this time starting on North Circular Road and gliding down Ashe Street before arriving triumphantly on The Mall, where throngs of cheering
crowds awaited. The dry skies and winter sun made it the ideal day for families to stroll through the streets, soak in the festive atmosphere, and support the many local businesses that line Tralee’s charming thoroughfares.
Of course, the real stars of the show were the many dedicated volunteers and performers who brought these magical parades to life. From the tireless crew of Oliver Hurley Productions to the stewards ensuring the streets were safe and festive, their hard work and yellow vests shone brighter than any Christmas light. Special thanks must go to the Gardaí, who kept the parades running smoothly and safely throughout the weekend
Adding an extra touch of magic to both parades were local MC Brian Hurley and his merry companion, Brain the Elf. Brain the Elf was a particular favorite among the little ones, chatting with children, checking if they were on the naughty or nice list, and helping to hand out gifts to delighted youngsters. The duo’s infectious enthusiasm brought smiles to countless faces, capturing the spirit of the season.
And what would a Christmas parade be without music? Local music maestro DJ Chris Shortt provided a magical soundtrack, filling the air with the sounds of classic Christmas
tunes that had everyone humming along . His festive playlist added that extra sparkle, ensuring the atmosphere was as merry and bright as the twinkling lights adorning the town.
The success of the weekend was a testament to the vibrant and generous community spirit of Tralee. Local businesses and organisations played a crucial role in bringing this magical celebration to life.Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kerry County Council The Rose Hotel, Sean Murphy Electrical, and Kirby’s Brogue Inn were among the standout sponsors who made the parades possible. Sean Murphy’s team , in particular, ensured that Tralee shone brighter than ever this year—solidifying the town’s reputation as the lighting capital of Ireland when it comes to Christmas displays. Adding to the magic, the parade remained eco-friendly, led once again by Mayor Mikey Sheehy in a fully electric Kia EV6, with the incredible floats towed by Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrids, all charged with over 40% renewable energy courtesy of McElligotts Kia . Beyond these key supporters, a host of other local businesses joined forces, their contributions ensuring that Tralee sparkled with wonder and delight, and getting the message
out that while online markets such as Amazon , Temu Ali Baba & many others were conspicuous by their absence is supporting such wonderful local events , that local business always dig deep when it comes to supporting our own community .
The weekend’s parades were more than just festive events—they were a celebration of community, togetherness, and the magic of Christmas. Families stood hand in hand, children’s eyes lit up with wonder, and the streets were alive with joy. It was a time for making memories, shopping local, and soaking up the charm of Tralee at its finest.
Last weekend , Tralee reminded us all of what makes Christmas so special: the spirit of giving, the magic of community, and the warmth that shines brightest when we come together. Here’s to a Christmas in Tralee that will be remembered for years to come.

McElligotts of Tralee open new state of the art Kia showroom
December 10th, 2024: McElligotts have just opened their new state of the art showroom on the Listowel Road in Tralee. This showroom upgrade is part of the Kia’s new Global Store Concept and McElligotts are one of the first dealers in the country to complete construction just in time for the busy 251 sales period which commences in January. Both Kia and McElligotts are experiencing a huge period of growth as the brand goes from strength to strength and have now solidified themselves as a top selling car brand in both Kerry and indeed nationwide. McElligotts have been trading in Kerry since 1870 but their goal has remained unchanged by providing a customer-first, customer-focused experience which has established them as a trusted household name in Kerry and beyond. In recent times, this success has been recognised as McElligotts were awarded 2023 European Kia Dealer of the Year and also 2024 Irish Kia Aftersales Dealer of the
Year.
The design of the new showroom, also referred to as the Kia store, splits the space into two different dimensions comprising of a vehicle display zone and a separate customer zone, each with a different spatial theme and colour scheme. The customer zone is a warm space with a minimalistic design, nothing like a traditional dealership. It consists of wooden tones and an earthy cosiness more in line with a living room rather than a showroom. Gentle lighting and woven furniture fabrics add additional warmth.
