Kerry’s ODR hotel group participates in Tourism mission to Australia & NZ

Tourism Ireland’s 2024 sales mission to Australia and New Zealand took place recently. A delegation of 11 tourism companies from Ireland – including Kerry’s O’Donoghue Ring Collection – participated in the targeted sales mission, to grow tourism from both markets in 2025 and beyond.

The sales mission, which visited Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland, included a B2B event in each city, featuring interactive presentations to showcase Ireland and the participating companies from Ireland engaging in hundreds of meetings with key travel professionals from Australia and New Zealand. Networking events with key tour operators, airlines and travel journalists also took place. The aim is to engage with travel professionals in the four cities who are currently selling Ireland, or who have good potential to sell the destination in the future – and to encourage them to extend

their Ireland offering, or to include Ireland for the first time, in their programmes.

Sofia Hansson, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Australia and New Zealand, said: “Our sales mission is an important element of our programme of activity in Australia and New Zealand this year – to highlight the many things to see and do, and all that is new and exciting, on a holiday in Ireland. It gives our tourism partners from Ireland an excellent platform to inform and influence the travel professionals they meet about what Ireland has to offer and, importantly, to encourage them to include the destination in their future programmes.”

Visitors from Australia and New Zealand are highly prized as they tend to stay longer, spend more and visit more regions than the average visitor to Ireland. They travel right around the island and many visit in

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER

MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Mary lives in a leafy suburb where the trees create a beautiful atmosphere. She is very upset when a row of ancient trees which have been standing for more than 50 years are cut down and mulched into sawdust.

The Forestry Act 2014 has tried to restrict indiscriminate felling of trees by requiring that in a non-urban area that anyone wishing to fell a tree should apply for a license.

The main protections for trees in Ireland are the requirement for a tree felling licence outside the urban area and Tree preservation orders. Felling licences can be obtained through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Forestry Section for felling trees over 10 years old outside the urban area. Under Section 37 of the Forestry Act 1946 it is illegal to uproot any tree over 10 years old or to cut down any tree of any age (including trees which form part of a hedgerow) unless a Felling Notice has been lodged at the Garda Station nearest to the trees at least 21 days before the felling commences. However, the requirements for a felling licence do not apply if the tree is a hazel, plum, damson, pear or cherry tree grown for its fruit or any ozier (willow grown for its rods), where the tree is less than 100 feet from a dwelling or where the tree is in a town council or city council area. The exemptions also apply in the case of local authority building roads, for road safety or electricity supply.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) may be made under Section 205 of

the Planning & Development Act 2000.

A TPO can be made if it appears to the planning authority to be desirable and appropriate, in the interest of amenity or the environment. A TPO can apply to a tree, trees, group of trees or woodland.

The principal effect of a TPO is to stop the cutting down, topping, lopping or wilful destruction of trees without the planning authority’s consent. The order can also require the owner and occupier of the land subject to the order to enter into an agreement with the planning authority to ensure the proper management of the tree, trees or woodland.

Other legal frameworks for the protection of trees include Development Plans and Planning Controls. Under the Planning Acts, the Local Authority must produce a development plan for its area. This can include objectives for preserving, improving and extending amenities. These objectives can include the preservation of trees and woodland. Preservation is achieved by the operation of planning controls and tree preservation orders. Planning permission can be refused. If the proposed development would result in the destruction of trees whose preservation is considered to be essential in the interests of amenity or can be granted subject to conditions e.g. retention of specific trees or planting of new trees.

The making of a tree preservation order is by the County Council where trees are at risk of being removed/damaged.

HO HO HO... HUSH.. WHATS THAT NOW!!! A CHRISTMAS STORY

Hello little ones, hello ho ho. My name is Mr. Clause, I have also been named St Nicholas, Father Christmas, and of course to each and every one of you Santa. This Christmas I wanted to say prior to all my visits all over the world, is this? Have you all been heard this year, last year, the years gone by generations of years gone by and will you be heard in the generations to come. You see I wanted to remind the world that no child ever grows up really, more we grow through and almost return to childlike state in elder years. The years in between from kids to adults carry lots of noise but nothing is caught in a huge proportion of exchange only yes I heard you ….but do we? Do we listen?

And so it begins the music, lights, happy, joyous, and merriment. The 12 days of Christmas with the most important being Christmas eve and day. The kids all over the world dream and make wishes and get so involved in a fascinating heart cracking love giving time of year. The reality is we all must remember that last paragraph does not, has not, will not, apply to many all over the world. Yet we try hard to keep our cheerfulness even when hurtfulness is just as important even more so.

I heard Santa met a young girl recently while taking stock off foot fall personalities.. Now she had no idea he was Santa. He had dressed in his red shirt and white tie black trousers. Apparently they were standing at a shop window and the little girl looked at Santa and said. “There are so many things in that window” Santa was taken back a little but replied “yes there is quite a lot is right.

My name is nick, “hello my name is letitia” the young girl replied. “I’m here with my mom I really

don’t know what to ask Santa for? Well I do but if I say it to my mom or Dad I don’t think she can ask Santa to bring it as I have never seen it”. “What gift is this then has it a name” “ Yes she replied its called listening, just like hearing, but differently in listening, I don’t really want or need anything or any of my brothers or sisters. I want to ask for my Mom and Dad friends and family for listening I just don’t know what it looks like. But I can see it because I can feel it sometimes like right now here talking to you”.

Having driven Dasher, Donner, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Blitzen and Rudolph for hundreds of years, I never in my majesty of this world met such wisdom and offering from a child, who obviously was going to provide her adulthood with change?. This was a very first from any child and adult to be was asked of Santa. Yet how could I provide this gift without announcing to the whole world that I was and personally speaking with all she knew. “Letitia how important is this to you this gift”. “Well it would stop me having to keep asking to be heard, because people say yes I hear you than they don’t because they don’t listen, I would hope if listening was a gift than asking would be less because I or we all of us would be heard. That way it would make everything so much easier to understand and to be happier everywhere. There would be lots more fun and lots more of playing and lots more of Moms Dads families and friends. We would no more longer be looking for things or asking because we would have each other and enjoy all what is not in that big Christmas window”.

Thank you!!! ....The more we HUSH HUSH HUSH HO HO HO THE MORE WE LISTEN AND THE MORE WE KNOW THE MORE WE KNOW THE MORE WE GROW. HAPPY AMAZING, GRAETFUL, WONDERFUL, PAINFUL, JOYFUL, PLENTIFUL CHRISTMAS….WHY BECAUSE LISTENING HAS THE GIFT WE ALL NEED. EVERYTHING WORTH WHILE IS IN IT PERSONALLY HEALING!!!

“I Santa wear my Santa suit all of November and December it is my very own marvel suit. This morning as I watched the people rush and race I was met with a super person that made me need

my Hot Toddy there and then with the gift of Gods special creations. I had a duty to this young lady to help her gift listening”

“My mom is calling me nick it was nice to meet you”, Happy Christmas and thank you for listening”. I reached out and held letitias hand for a second as a tear fell from my eye and said no my little one thank you for creating the gift for me”. She laughed and ran off. Hundreds of years I have been hearing hearing and giving. It was time to listen listen and look at what was needed not wanted. It was a week before Christmas Eve I was very busy at Lapland the busiest I had ever been because I Santa was given an amazing gift from a wise young girl who would grow greatly into a powerful human being while never forgetting she is a child within.

I called on all and declared shut down worldwide on the 20th of December at 12.am all over the world . I stopped the world and aloud I declared. Listen listen listen up!!!! This is a gift free to all and full of abundance of all and everything worthwhile. I Saint Nicholas have 3 minutes to tell you all. The child next to you is you. The adult near you is the very same just that bit more serious so stop and smile. I want to thank letitia and tell the world that the gift of listening applies to all, Moms, Dads, Brothers, Sisters, friends, Neighbours, strangers, everyone all over the world . Stop listen and there is so much more to give than gain.

This gift I want asked for every year from everyone, . letitia listen , listen letitia.

583 Kerry Students Benefit from Transformative STEM Initiative

An inspiring initiative is paving the way for a brighter future in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) for students in Kerry. The STEM Passport for Inclusion programme, launched by Maynooth University and Microsoft Ireland, has already engaged 583 students from schools in Kerry, offering them a supported pathway into STEM careers. This initiative, co-funded by Microsoft Ireland and Research

Ireland, aims to address inequalities in access to STEM education, particularly among girls and students from disadvantaged communities.

Since its inception in 2021, over 5,000 students across Ireland have participated, with a remarkable 76% now considering a career in STEM and 79% planning to apply for thirdlevel STEM courses.

In Kerry, the programme has provided invaluable mentorship and educational support, with

students benefiting from over 2,500 mentoring hours delivered by industry professionals. Participants graduate with a Level 6 NFQ qualification, setting a solid foundation for future academic and professional success.

A recent survey revealed the programme’s transformative impact: before participation, only 45% of students understood STEM, a figure that soared to 95% after completing the programme. Additionally, the

initiative has helped close the confidence gap in STEM between students from disadvantaged schools and their peers.

With its expansion nationwide and a strong focus on underrepresented groups, the STEM Passport for Inclusion is not just a programme but a movement, empowering Kerry students and thousands across Ireland to step confidently into STEM fields and shape the future.

Kerry Heroes of 2024 proudly supported by Fexco

Radio Kerry and Fexco are once again joining forces to honour Kerry Heroes. These heroes are individuals and groups who have shown outstanding community spirit, courage, vision and leadership in the last 12 months here in Kerry. They make us proud to be of Kerry. As 2024 reaches its close, Radio Kerry and Fexco offer you the opportunity to nominate your Kerry Heroes.

There will be eight award recipients and each will receive a specially created 2024 award, crafted and sponsored by Louis Mulcahy Pottery/Potadóireacht na Caolóige, Clogher, Ballyferriter.

We invite the people of Kerry to let us know who they consider to be the Kerry Heroes of 2024. Who do you feel really deserves to be recognised

for their work at home, in the community, at work. Plenty of well known Kerry people made us proud this year. There are also plenty of people less well known who contribute so much to our county. In either case the nominations are in your hands … you don’t necessarily have to have been the recipient of the kindness nor do you need to personally know someone to nominate them for their outstanding contribution to Kerry.

We welcome nominations for Kerry Heroes of all ages. Please let us know, in no more than 500 words, who you wish to nominate, along with a photograph if possible by email hero@radiokerry.ie or by post to Kerry Heroes, Kerry Today, Radio Kerry, Maine Street, Tralee, Co Kerry. Closing date for receipt of

nominations is midday on Monday, December 16th 2024.

On Monday, December 23rd Jerry O Sullivan will announce the 2024

Kerry Heroes and honour them on a special Kerry Today programme between 9 and 11am on Radio Kerry.

€452,060 Raised for 4 Kerry Charities by Radio Kerry Radio Bingo

An incredible €452,060 has been raised for four Kerry charities through the efforts of Radio Kerry Radio Bingo players since May 2021. On Saturday, November 30th, the latest funds—€86,868—were distributed among Kerry Cancer Support Group, Kerry Hospice, Recovery Haven Kerry, and Comfort for Chemo Kerry, with each receiving €21,717.

Representatives from the charities appeared on Radio Kerry’s Saturday Supplement with Joe McGill to discuss their projects and how the funds will make a difference.

Jack Shanahan, Chairman of the Kerry Hospice Foundation, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support. “We’ll soon begin ground works on a much-needed five-bed extension to our inpatient unit. This multi-million-euro project, funded entirely by our foundation, will enhance our mission of delivering world-class palliative care.”

Comfort for Chemo Kerry welcomed the funds, emphasizing their commitment to establishing a state-of-the-art chemotherapy unit. “Thanks to Radio Kerry and its listeners, we are one step closer to ensuring people can receive chemotherapy locally,” a

spokesperson shared.

Breda Dyland of Kerry Cancer Support Group highlighted the impact of the funding, particularly in light of a 40% increase in service demand. “The funds will help us purchase a new bus for our Healthlink transport service, ensuring continued accessibility for patients traveling to Limerick for

treatment.”

Marisa Reidy of Recovery Haven Kerry noted how the initiative enables them to continue offering free, essential support services to those affected by cancer. “This is all thanks to the generosity of Radio Kerry Bingo players.”

Radio Kerry broadcasts bingo numbers five times daily and posts

them on social media. Books, available at €5 from over 66 outlets countywide, continue to unite the community in support of these vital causes. Notably, Radio Kerry does not profit from the initiative, ensuring all proceeds directly benefit the charities.

Don’t Tralee’s Christmas lights look Fantastic?

I was all set this week to go out after dusk and start snapping away at the wonderful wonderful array of lights (yes 2 “wonderfuls” ! )that our Local Hero Sean Murphy and his team at his Electrical business have erected all over our town ! However I came across these super photos that Tralee lady Catherine White snr ( aka the Birthday Girl !) had taken and posted . Isn’t it wonderful that we have so many people taking pride in this Festive display, that they take the time to snap and share such wonderful work .So thanks Catherine for these!

And lets call a spade a spade here, putting up these lights is bloody hard work! I have met Sean plenty of times over the past few weeks, in all weather ,at all times of the day, up very very high making sure that Tralee has ,as the Carlsberg ad says , “Probably the BEST Christmas Lights of any town” , and most cities in Ireland! To do this takes huge work , effort ,and built-in enthusiasm... and Sean does this

pretty much on a voluntary basis !

..I know this to be true . The people of Tralee are so lucky to have him , still enthusiastic, still pushing for our town to constantly improve and look better ( Who do you think is right in the middle of making sure that Tralee doesn’t have one , BUT 2 Christmas parades happening next weekend ? yup that’s Sean !)

I remember when I was heavily involved in Tralee Chamber back in the 1990’s and we had to go door to door to local business raising funds to light up Tralee for Christmas . Sean was a breath of fresh air then , making sure that Christmas lights went everywhere he could put them , and adding & improving them each year saying Tralee needs to have “The Best Lights in the Country “ ...even when the money collection was slower that we wanted ! So take a moment and take a photo or 2 , and send these photos off to someone else ...show Tralee off ! Tralee’s lights this year will lift many peoples spirits .Adults & children alike.

Tralee and the Maharees Clean Coast Groups Shortlisted at 2024 Ocean Hero Awards

Two dedicated groups from County Kerry have been recognized at the 2024 Ocean Hero Awards for their significant contributions to marine conservation. Hosted by An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Programme at the Gibson Hotel in Dublin, the awards celebrated individuals and organisations committed to protecting Ireland’s coastal environments. The Maharees Heritage and Conservation Group was shortlisted for the prestigious Group of the Year category. Founded in 2016 in response to severe sand displacement caused by Atlantic storms, this group has passionately worked to safeguard sand dunes while also engaging the community in beach clean-ups, biodiversity talks, and fundraising activities. Their ongoing commitment to preserving

local coastal heritage highlights the importance of grassroots efforts in environmental stewardship. Tralee Tidy Towns earned a nomination in the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion category. Reflecting the town’s diverse population, which includes newcomers from Ukraine, Syria, and Algeria, the group has harnessed this multicultural strength to foster community involvement in maintaining a clean environment. They respond proactively to litter issues identified in IBAL reports and organise weekly beach clean initiatives. Additionally, their collaboration with the Tralee International Resource Centre, which distributes Family Heritage Trail booklets, promotes inclusivity and educates newcomers about local history.

Both groups exemplify the spirit of community engagement and environmental protection in Kerry, showcasing how local efforts contribute to broader marine

conservation initiatives. These outstanding nominations serve as an inspiration for others in the region.

Warriors Begin Title Defence with Convincing Win

Tralee Warriors 109 - Limerick Sport Eagles 74

The Tralee Warriors opened their National League title defence with a dominant performance over Limerick Sport Eagles at the Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday. With standout contributions from Joshua Osayanrhion (24 points), Olaf Michalczuk (20 points), and Padraig Fleming (19 points), the Warriors controlled the game from the outset.

Strong Start

Steven Bowler set the tone early, supported by James Fernane and Dan Bowler, as the Warriors surged to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter. Despite efforts from Limerick’s Liam Price and Sean Morrissey, Tralee led 27-13 after the first period.

Second Quarter Onslaught

A stellar second quarter, led by Michalczuk’s 20 points and Fleming’s 11, extended the Warriors’ lead to 62-32 by halftime. Limerick struggled to contain Tralee’s relentless offense.

Maintaining Momentum

Osayanrhion powered through the third quarter, scoring 11 points as Tralee kept their 30-point lead. Liam Price’s 24 points and Colm Price’s 17 for Limerick provided bright spots, but the Eagles couldn’t close the gap.

Final Push

The Warriors capped off their performance with contributions from Fleming, Lynch, and Craig, sealing a 109-74 victory.
