Visit of Internet Saint’s Relics a Resounding Success
The visit of Blessed Carlo Acutis’s relics to Tralee over the weekend has been celebrated as a great success, drawing people from across Kerry despite challenging weather. Blessed Carlo, the first Millennial Saint and patron of the Internet, inspired visitors with his life story and devotion to faith.
Queues stretched beyond the church into Day Place, as attendees prayed to the soon-to-be canonized saint. Local schoolchildren visited on Monday and received blessings from Bishop Ray Browne. Monsignor Anthony Figueiredo, custodian of the relics, emphasized Carlo’s special connection with young people and those distanced from their faith. “Carlo reminds us not to waste our lives,” Monsignor Figueiredo said. “We are all originals, not photocopies.”
Fr. David McGovern, Prior of Holy Cross, expressed gratitude to
volunteers, clergy, school staff, and the community for embracing the visit. He highlighted the spiritual impact of Carlo’s relics, capable of transforming lives both physically and spiritually.
Carlo Acutis was born in London in 1991 to Italian parents who were initially non-religious. A Polish nanny introduced him to Catholicism after the family returned to Milan. Carlo quickly developed a deep faith, devotion to the Eucharist, and a love for helping others, including the homeless and bullied classmates. A computer whiz, he used his skills to design websites promoting Gospel teachings and Eucharistic miracles. Carlo passed away from leukemia in 2006 at the age of 15. His kindness, faith, and devotion to God gained widespread recognition, and his life continues to inspire people worldwide.
Pope Francis recently announced
that Blessed Carlo Acutis will be canonized on April 27, 2025, in St. Peter’s Square, Rome.

Students in Kerry told they are on the frontline in fight to reduce road deaths.
1200 students from across County Kerry were told today that they are on the frontline of the fight to improve road safety in Ireland. The students are participants in the latest edition of the AXA Roadsafe Roadshow which is taking place today at The INEC and organised by the insurance company AXA in association with An Garda Siochana and local emergency services.
Speaking ahead of the event, Mick Comerford, Director with AXA said that the country was currently fighting to improve road safety. she said, “As one of the largest insurance groups in Europe we deal with numerous claims every week as a result of traffic collisions. The effects
are well documented - too many people are being killed on our roads or are being injured for life. Many of these young students will begin driving in the next year or two so it’s vital that we educate them early to think twice about the seriousness of road safety when driving and realise the consequences of taking risks on the road. To date 159 people have lost their lives on our roads this year. In County Kerry, 6 lives have been lost so far this year as against 10 lives lost in 2023. “
The AXA Roadsafe Roadshow is aimed primarily at Transition Year students in Secondary Schools and is based on an award-winning format and depicts graphically
how a night out, can end in tragedy. The show depicts what happens with driver inexperience and overconfidence with the aim to educate and highlight the various safety skills these young students need before they or their friends start driving.
Using a backdrop of contemporary music, video clips and television advertisements; the story will be told by Garda Patricia Fitzpatrick, Paramedic Stephen O’Flaherty, Fire Officer Dan Keane and Kerry
Hospital ED Consultant Martin Boyd. The show culminates in a presentation by Ann Tydings who lost her son Padraic twenty years ago .Ann will tell the students about the raw grief she and her family have had to suffer since that terrible day.
Lakeside Café at Tralee Bay Wetlands gets ready to spread the Magic this Christmas
Santas Winter Wonderland begins at Lakeside Café at Tralee Bay Wetlands this week, where Santa is getting ready to meet the boys and girls of Kerry, the Sliabh Mish Room at the Wetlands has been transformed into a magical space where boys and girls can have some time to chat with Santa, tell him how good they have been and what they would like this season as a reward for that.
Head elf Ginger is returning this year ready to have fun with everyone, and of course Mrs. Clause will keep control of the boys..
Rose of Tralee paid a visit this week to ensure it was ready to welcome everyone and she had an amazing time and such fun there she said she would be back,
Creative director of the wonderland Ecologist Tom Canavan tells us “Of
all the seasons Santa loves Winter most. It’s the thrill of a sleigh ride amongst aurora borealis, when the frost is in his beard and the hot breath of his Reindeer clouds the night air as they hurtle ahead of his sleigh.
When he stays in Lakeside café Tralee Bay Wetlands, while he rests up ahead of the big night, he stays for the quiet, cold mornings when he can nearly hear a heron’s wings, can watch Swans so white they remind of him of home. He stays so he can eat, be merry and be close to Nature, this is why we created the scene indoors for him to enjoy, Tom goes on to tell us that while it is full of things kind to nature and has an indoor wonderland scene it carries a distinct theme of sustainability with the post to the North Pole Wall, which has been created totally from recycled cardboard and other materials. So far we have letters from children from Poland, Ukraine Cork limerick and all over Kerry ready to go to the north pole.
Each child will receive an appropriate quality gift from Santa all wrapped in recyclable gift paper.
While each guest will receive complimentary tea coffee and Hot Chocolate, so come and join him and tell him what you want for Christmas. “
Speaking at the launch event organizer Margaret Kissane said she is delighted to provide a space that children can come and meet Santa and also feel the wonderful surroundings and thanked her creative team for creating the space and transforming it into a magical wonderland, she is also delighted to provide space for schools and groups to have an audience with Santa this December and there is limited availability for this during the school day times in December, the general public can avail of Santa from 2-6 daily weekdays during December with availability Saturdays and Sundays 11-6.
Margaret also tells us that she has set aside December 11th and December 17th for sensory evenings and visit slots will be available from 1.00-8.00pm each day so welcoming our children in the county with additional needs.
Margaret says “we look forward to welcoming families from all over the county and beyond to share in the magic of Christmas”.
Bookings can be made by calling

Tralee Dentist Wins Top Dentistry Award for Life-Changing Diagnosis
Dr. Tom Quilter, a dentist based in Tralee, has been named Colgate Caring Dentist of the Year 2024. He was nominated by a patient undergoing cancer treatment, whose life was significantly impacted by his dedication and expertise.
The patient credited Dr. Quilter for diagnosing osteonecrosis of the jaw, a serious condition caused by Zometa infusions, part of her cancer treatment. Despite initial disagreement from her medical

Last Friday, we gathered at The President’s Annual Lunch, sponsored by Kerry Group, to celebrate a significant milestone for Tralee Chamber: the launch of our ambitious three-year strategy. This strategy outlines a bold vision for the future of Tralee and the North Kerry business community, grounded in four key pillars: Membership Impact, University Town, Communications, and Vibrant Tralee.
The creation of this strategy represents months of dedication and collaboration. It reflects the collective passion of our voluntary committee
members, who serve on our board and steering groups, and the commitment of our office team, whose tireless work drives the Chamber’s mission forward every day.
We were privileged to have two inspiring guest speakers join us for this special occasion:
• Adam Harris, CEO of ASIAM, shared his personal journey of living with autism in Ireland, delivering a powerful and heartfelt message. His speech left a lasting impression, inspiring us to continue making Tralee an Autism-Friendly Town.
• Taoiseach Simon Harris officially launched the strategy, offering his enthusiastic support for our shared vision. His presence, particularly during such a busy period, underscored the significance of our collective goals for Tralee and North Kerry.
This sold-out event was more than a launch—it was a celebration of the incredible contributions from our volunteers. The members of the Enterprise, Vibrant Tralee, and Education sub-committees are the driving force behind impactful projects that will shape the future of our town and region. Their expertise, energy, and generosity are invaluable to the success of our work.
A special thanks also goes to our Chamber office team, whose behind-the-scenes work ensures every initiative is executed with professionalism and passion. Their dedication keeps the Chamber running smoothly and ensures we deliver value to our members and wider community.
We encourage you to share the attached strategy document and photos from the event across your networks. Together, we can showcase Tralee’s ambition and strength
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this strategy and this celebration possible. Together, we are shaping an exciting future for Tralee and North Kerry.

Cillian & Yvonne purchase the Phoenix Cinema!
Minister for Education and Kerry
T.D Norma Foley has welcomed the purchase of the Phoenix Cinema in Dingle by actor Cillian Murphy and his wife Yvonne McGuinness.
The 150-seater was one of the last single-screen cinemas in Ireland and was run by the O’Sullivan family until it closed in 2021.
Minister Foley welcomed the news that the cinema has been bought by Cillian Murphy and his wife Yvonne McGuinness .
“This is fantastic news for Dingle. The Phoenix Cinema has been an institution in Dingle for more than
100 years. It is wonderful that Cillian Murphy and his wife Yvonne have now decided to keep the magic of cinema alive in the town into the 21st century.”
Cillian Murphy’s father Brendán worked as a school inspector in the Department of Education while his mother Mary was a French teacher. The couple met at a traditional Irish music session in West Kerry. They brought their family on holidays to Dingle every summer, which is how Cillian Murphy became a fan of the Phoenix Cinema.
Minister Foley said: “Cillian Murphy
has lots of pleasant memories of the Phoenix Cinema from his childhood. He and his wife have now ensured that a new generation of children will benefit in the same way. I look forward to the re-opening of the Phoenix cinema after renovations being next year.”
Minister Foley recently launched the new Leaving Certificate subject of Drama, Film and Theatre Studies, which will be piloted in more than 140 schools from next September.
“In Ireland, we are renowned worldwide for our contributions to the arts and I hope this new subject,

As the year winds down, we caught up with our 2024 Sports Ambassadors to discuss how they stay motivated, utilize the facilities here at Manor West Leisure Centre , and plan for the year ahead. Here’s what they had to say:
1. How do you stay motivated during cold winter evenings?
• Armin: My motivation comes from preparing my body for the upcoming season. The gym and pool facilities are key to maintaining this routine.
• Joey: A final with my club keeps me driven. Focusing on being present during training helps me enjoy it more, even when it’s challenging.
• Ferdia: Winter feels quieter, making it easier to focus on training and progress compared to the busy summer months.
• Jadyn: Consistency is my key motivator. Staying on track during the off-season allows me to unlock greater potential for the upcoming season.
2. How do you use Manor West facilities the most?
• Armin: The sauna and pool are my go-to for recovery and relaxation between sessions.
• Joey: I rely on the facilities for recovery. My routine includes a light spin, sauna, steam room, pool stretches, and some laps—followed by relaxation in the jacuzzi.
• Ferdia: After a challenging year with injury, I’ve focused on rehabilitation, primarily using the gym and pool.
• Jadyn: I use the high-performance zone for strength training and the pool area for recovery after intense gym sessions.
3. What are your short-term goals?
• Armin: Finish the club season on a high and prepare for 2025.
• Joey: Win the intermediate championship with my club and progress to the Munster campaign.
• Ferdia: Returning to the pitch in early 2025 with Austin Stacks would be a big win for me.
• Jadyn: Continue building strength and conditioning for the upcoming season, building on this year’s progress.
Our ambassadors remind us that preparation, recovery, and focus are key to finishing the year strong. We wish them every success in their endeavors!
