New Walking Route to be launched in Ballyheigue

Slí Bhréanainn – Brendan’s Walking Route will be launched on Saturday, May 11th, at 11:00 am in the Ballyheigue Community Centre, marking a new national and international initiative celebrating Saint Brendan’s legacy over the centuries.

Chaired by former Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dick Spring, a foundation based in Tralee is tasked with researching Brendan’s influence. This initiative designates

the hinterlands around Tralee Bay, extending over the mountain bearing Brendan’s name down to Brandon Creek, as Brendan Country. The aim is to develop this region into a major cultural and leisure destination, bolstering the local economy.

Ballyheigue holds strong ties to St. Brendan, with sanctuaries established by two of his mentors, St. Erc and St. Daithle, in the parish.

The launch event will feature a presentation by the local Dramatic

Society tracing Brendan’s vision, followed by the unveiling of the CD “Song of Saint Brendan,” featuring musical meditations by Richard Casey and Pat Donegan, with a signature song by composer Cáit Ní Allmhuráin.

A symbolic stroll along the village’s waterfront will kick off the Walking Route, with markers honoring Brendan’s mentors. Local musicians will accompany walkers, and Banna Rescue will raise a flag on their boat

to recall Tim Severin’s sea voyage, suggesting Brendan’s possible discovery of America. The event is coordinated with the Brendan Festival committee and will be opened by Most Rev. Ray Browne, Bishop of Kerry. Minister for Education and Kerry TD, Norma Foley, will launch the CD. All are invited to this historic event celebrating St. Brendan’s enduring legacy.

The search is on for this year’s Lee Strand / Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2024

Nominations are now open for the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2024, celebrating the contributions of young people aged thirteen to twenty-one in Kerry. The awards ceremony will take place at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee, on Friday, September 27th, 2024.

Twenty Merit Awards will recognize individuals making positive contributions to their communities, with an additional Group Award for impactful team efforts. The Special Achievement Award will honor individuals who have overcome challenges, while the Community Safety Award will acknowledge those improving community safety. Chief Superintendent Padraic

Powell praised the awards’ role in recognizing youth excellence and fostering positive relationships between Gardaí and the community.

Gearoid Linnane, CEO of Lee Strand, highlighted Lee Strand’s commitment to supporting local initiatives, expressing delight in backing the awards since 1998. Nominations close on Friday, May 31st, 2024, and forms are available at any Kerry Garda Station or online at www.leestrand.ie/garda-awards/.

Any member of the public can nominate a young person, including individuals, community groups, schools, and youth organizations. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges chaired by Chief Superintendent Padraic Powell.

Spotlight on.....Jadyn Lucey (Kerry Ladies GAA & Na Gaeil)

Q. Why did you choose the sport you compete in?

I chose football, because I have loved it for as long as I can remember. I enjoy being part of a team, I love the competitive aspect. I have been playing since I was four years old and football has always been important to me.

Q. To date, what is your greatest achievement in sport?

I have a Senior Munster Championship Medal with Kerry having debuted with the Senior Ladies at the age of 16. Personally, as achievements go, this year tops everything, returning to County level and getting my first start for Kerry is an honour.

Q. What is your ultimate goal that you have set for yourself?

My ultimate focus has always been to improve elements of my own game and work hard with my County team and Club team towards continuous improvement and achieving our team goals. Whether it is Club, College or County football, the focus is the same for every game and every training session.

Q. Who has been your biggest influence/mentor in sport?

My biggest sporting influence has come from my parents, who both played team sports. Along with my younger sister they have always encouraged and supported me. I take inspiration of course from other sports people that I respect.

Q. What is your earliest memory of sport?

My earliest memory of football is being at Na Gaeil for my first ever training session, learning how to solo properly on the pitch!

Q. If you were to play another sport, what would it be?

I have always loved basketball and played at various levels, with my College team MTU and St. Brendan’s Tralee.

Q. Within the next year, what will be your main use of our facility? (recovery, training, rehab etc.)

Over the next few months, I look forward to enjoying time in the pool, sauna and steam room in between gym and pitch sessions!

Thanks Jadyn ...

Sinn Féin officially launched its local election campaign in Kerry last night at an event held in the Rose Hotel in Tralee. Sinn Féín is running thirteen candidates across the six local electoral areas in the county. Launching their campaign Kerry TD Pa Daly told the audience:

“If you want change, you have to vote for it in the council elections, in the EU election and in the General Election when it comes.

“The number of candidates that Sinn Féin are running in the local elections here in Kerry is testament to our ambition to deliver positive change in every area. We want

councils to deliver for communities on housing, on planning and on delivering better local services.
