KEEP YOUR BUSINESS IN TRALEE AND KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS!

Hello everyone!

& welcome back to 'Create with Rebecca', a page where I will be talking ALL things social media! (yaaaaaaay!). This column will be especially helpful for those in business looking to navigate the world of social media for their business. I will be simplifying EVERYTHING as well as giving my top tips. Oh, by the way... I can edit videos, advise you on social media & create a new vibe for your brand! (Aka video editor, social media consultant & graphic designer) - so I know what I'm talking about!

HOW TO LEARN TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT The world is changing... everyday... and fast. It can seem overwhelming and to be honest, confusing when someone mentions the latest TikTok trend or social media business strategy. If social media is not your forté and you grew up without internet connection, it could be a bit daunting to enter the world of social media or at least become literate in it. So... how do you learn to use social media and why is it important? The how, well... use it. The best way to learn how to do something is by doing and consuming it. You don't learn to drive by reading books about a car, you get driving lessons. So, download the most popular apps and play around with them. Press all the buttons, google what each feature means and don't be afraid to do something wrong. YouTube is a fantastic resource for videos explaining how to do certain things or what they are, use it. Secondly... consume. Look at what other people are posting, enjoy the trends and be aware of how other people use the social media platform in question. The more you consume it, the more you will understand. The why? Because why disrespect yourself like that? The world is changing, everyday, and why should you deny yourself the privilege of all of the new technology available to you. You deserve to be able to use all of the new technology without hassle, you just have to believe in yourself. Technology isn't scary, it's fun and can benefit you and your business in many ways.

For more information on what I do or if you are interested in any of my social media service: I offer 1:1 consultation calls, video editing, graphic design and more, you can follow @create.socialmedia on instagram or email me: createtralee@gmail.com to book a call!

Town Centre To Welcome Meet Me At Phillies, Where Good Food Doesn’t Cost The Earth By Georgie Downes

If you’re concerned about the environment (who isn’t?) and you want to reduce your carbon footprint (naturally) and you love a good takeaway from time to time (who doesn’t?) then rejoice; Meet Me At Phillies, the incredibly woke takeaway and brain child of business partners Shane Scanlon and Brian Harmon, is due to open a new premises in Tralee town centre on 11th October, raising the bar for take-aways everywhere. The pair, friends since college, have finally realised their shared vision to create a fast-food restaurant in the town centre that uses nothing but fresh, locally-sourced organic ingredients while their environmental ideals mean single-use plastics and Styrofoam are out and fully compostable sugarcane boxes are in. The mouth-watering menu features succulent Black Angus beef burgers, golden free-range-chicken goujons and chunky chips made fresh from real potatoes. Plus, Meet Me At Phillies deliver, so you don’t even have to leave the house to get your hands on

their delicious fare. What began as a mobile takeaway operating from a trailer during lockdown has evolved into a sustainable business that continues to go from strength to strength. “We bought the trailer in 2019. We wanted to serve superior fast-food. Business boomed then we found a permanent premises in Caheranne, so we sold the trailer. We made the decision to move into the town centre six months ago and now it’s finally happening,” says Shane, who’s been working around the clock to get the new premises in Abbey Court ready for the big day. “I was inspired by the film Chef,” he laughs, explaining his decision to do culinary studies at MTU, but he also credits his Aunt Charlotte Cluskey, a seasoned chef and former restaurant owner, for teaching him how to cook. “Our ethos is good food at a fair price. It’s fast food but cooked to order so it’s always fresh and we are genuinely passionate about that,” he says.

We could all use a bit of gourmet sustainability so best of luck and congratulations to Shane and Brian. Meet Me At Phillies will open from 12pm daily, specialising in school lunches, and stay open until

Ryles Remedies by Mike and Gráinne Ryle The Head to Tail of Autumn Infestations! I covered headlice in my last column, so now it’s time to move down along the body and talk a little bit about how to deal with some other pesky critters seen at this time of the year! Worms: The first sign of worms is often an itchy bum, particularly at night. This can disturb sleep and lead to unexpected bed wetting; more established infection might result in visible worms in the faeces (yuck!). While it is possible to contract worms from household pets, more often than not they are actually spread by ingestion of the eggs on contaminated food. For this reason they are difficult to prevent but hygiene is key. If you suspect worms, call to your pharmacy to chat about treatment options. Vermox (liquid or tablets) are the main stay of worm treatment, readily available and easy to use. If you are pregnant, or suspect that a child under two years of age has worms, you will need to see your GP. Otherwise, Vermox are suitable and extra hygiene measures should be followed for two weeks, including: frequent washing & scrubbing, short nails, cleaning bedwear. Scabies: Tralee has also seen an outbreak of scabies these past couple of weeks. While scabies are an unpleasant condition, they are not serious and are easy to treat. If you suspect that you have scabies, call to your pharmacy where we can recommend the best treatment option. Bear in mind that they can be quite contagious, so avoid close skin contact with anyone until you have a confirmed diagnosis. What topics would you be interested to read about in Ryles Remedies? Chicken fajita pasta bake We’ve given a comforting family favourite a spicy Mexican-style twist! (6 Syns per serving, 1 hour 10 minutes, Serves 4)

Deduct 6 Syns if using Cheddar reduced fat/light as a Healthy Extra ‘a’ choice. *Spice blends are Free so long as they’re made from herbs and spices only and don’t include any Synned ingredients like sugar, flour or oil. Check the label to be sure and count the Syns as necessary.

Ingredients • Low-calorie cooking spray • 2 red onions, finely sliced • 2 peppers, any colour, deseeded and sliced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 tsp fajita seasoning* (see tip) • 680g jar passata • 1 chicken stock cube • 300g dried paccheri or rigatoni pasta • 4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts, sliced into thin strips • 160g mature reduced-fat Cheddar, grated • Mixed-leaf salad, to serve

Method Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Spray a large, deep non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Fry the onions and peppers for 8-10 minutes, or until so ened and a little coloured. Add the garlic and fajita seasoning with a splash of water, and fry for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Add 480g of the passata, the stock cube and 250ml boiling water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 8-10 minutes. Season to taste. Meanwhile, boil the pasta for 3 minutes less than the pack instructions (it will finish cooking in the oven), then drain well. Add the chicken to the tomato sauce and bring to a simmer. Toss the pasta through the sauce, then transfer to a 25cm x 30cm baking dish. Season the remaining passata, spoon it over the pasta, then scatter the cheese evenly over the top. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and crisp, and the sauce is bubbling around the edges. Leave to stand for 5 minutes, then divide between 4 plates and serve with the mixed-leaf salad. OUR PROPERTY PAGE IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOMMY CARMODY’S PROPERTY HOUSE

Tommy’s current market outlook... LOCAL PROPERTY TAX I received a letter regarding Local Property Tax and was taken aback by the valuation band which I fall into as it assumes the value of my home to be considerably more than what we consider to be market value. What can we do about this? On another note we did build a ‘Granny-Flat’ to the rear of

Better call Tommy...

the home – does this affect the valuation? Thank you, Catherine and Joe Hi Catherine. Thank you for making contact. Let us start with the good news…If you are not happy with the assumed valuation you are in a position to contest this and it must be done in writing. The onus will be on you to be able to show that similar properties in the area have sold or are advertised at a level which suggests that the value assumed for your home exceeds the current market. The easiest way to check sale prices would be to

visit one of many property price registers online and to check asking prices you will simply log onto daft. ie or myhome.ie and see if a neighbouring home, of similar size and finish is advertised. Of course you can also get a licensed estate agent in your area to value your property. Now for the bad news… The ‘Granny Flat’ that you built DOES affect the Local Property Tax payable. Any building or section of building that could be used as a dwelling is deemed a separate residential property for LPT purposes as far as Revenue are concerned. If you own both the Granny-Flat and the main property Revenue may allow both buildings to be valued as one property for LPT purposes.

Do some research but when making your submission ensure all information provided is accurate as you do not want this coming back to you down the line. Tommy Carmody’s Property House can carry out a valuation for you if needs be and we offer a service where we will have your valuation back to you within 48 hours of visiting your property. Speak soon, hopefully.

Peloton backpedals to smaller Cork Support Office GLOBAL exercise equipment giant Peloton has backpedalled on Cork city office plans it had earlier this year, for 70,000-80,000 sq ft of space, for c 700 employees. Now, on the back of poor Q4 2021 financial figures, and some treadmill product recalls, it has scaled back its hunt for offices in Cork city. Sources say it is currently seeking a significantly reduced presence for the moment, put at between 10,000 to 20,000 sq ft, with the option/scope to scale up to as much as 50,000 sq ft in the short to medium term. But, despite the poor financials and a tapering off of demand for home exercise equipment, which had topped $1bn at the pandemic’s height, it’s understood Peloton is still committed to a customer Friday 8th October 2021

support presence in Cork, with the search for offices in the city centre currently ongoing via retained agents CBRE. Peloton had been advancing discussions on new offices at Cork’s Navigation Square, after news broke before summer of its wish for 70,000 sq ft, or more via CBRE, with Savills acting for developers O’Callaghan Properties. It’s still expected that Peloton will commit to Cork offices, by this year’s end, sources indicate. The news of Peloton’s scaled-back offices requirement comes after Facebook also put on hold an inquiry for accommodation for up to 1,000 employees in Cork, where it currently has a subsidiary Oculus VR. Minister Foley welcomes significant investment in Kerry under NDP Plan Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomes Government’s National Development Plan, which details significant investment in Kerry infrastructure from 2021 to 2030. Minister Foley said: “I welcome this plan which will be the largest and most ambitious ever delivered in Ireland. Connectivity is at the heart of the plan with investment in a number of key strategic road arteries across the county. Significant capital investment will see also major investment in MTU Kerry Campus’s STEM Building project.” Kerry’s road network is a key backbone for connectivity and under this plan they will continue to strengthen and improve. Among the key initiatives featured in this new plan are: • The N69 Listowel Bypass, The N22 Farranfore to Killarney project, The Tralee Northern Relief Road.

Greenways are equally important to the Kerry landscape and we look forward to completion of the Listowel and Tralee/Fenit Greenways in the coming months. The NDP also specifically addresses the potential to link the North and South Kerry Greenways which will enhance and develop these projects to their fullest extent possible. A state of the art campus as part of the MTU Kerry Campus Stem Building project will benefit the entire country. This building will increase the capacity of the MTU Kerry Campus by 440 students; it will include labs, classrooms and agri-engineering workshop spaces. Provision of either new or refurbishment works are also included for Tralee Courthouse. A capital investment programme will be carried out at Dingle Harbour encompassing ongoing safety and maintenance Capital projects in the area of aquaculture are included for Fenit, a Local Authority owned

Harbour. Regional Airports that facilitate international connectivity like Kerry Airport are eligible to apply for grant aid under the new 2021 – 2025 Programme. Heritage funding will also support the high-quality care

conservation, promotion and sensitive refurbishment and development of OPW visitor infrastructure like Skellig Michael and the Valentia Cable Station.

Fair Day in Castlemaine in memory of John! Castlemaine Events Committee will host the revival of Castlemaine Fair Day on Sunday October 10th in memory of the late John O’Donoghue. The location of the Sheep Fair will be in Griffin's Car Park and it will get underway from 10:00am.The event and its proceeds will be in aid of Kerry Hospice whilst there will also be an auction on the day where the donation of animals is welcome. John O’Donoghue who was known all over resided in the heart of Castlemaine Village and was born on January 21st 1965 which ironically happened to coincide with a staging of the old Castlemaine Fair Day so it felt appropriate to mark John’s lifetime love of attending fairs and being an integral part of the farming community by bringing back the old fair day in his honour Speaking about the event, John’s daughter Cathy said: Friday 8th October 2021

“The fair day was an annual event in Castlemaine but it died out in the 90s. John loved to attend the fair days throughout the county and was well known as the custom of attending the fairs was passed onto John from his father Denis. I along with his good friend Pat O Keeffe felt a fair day was a lovely way to celebrate John’s life whilst also raising money for Kerry Hospice due to his passion for farming and his love of a fair day .It was a huge shock to John, his family and friends when he was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in May 2019. His life was cut short as 7 months after that he died in the Palliative Care Unit on the 13th of January 2020.The care and support provided from the palliative care team was so amazing that it feels very right to give something back and I hope that we can raise as much money as possible on the day for such a wonderful service here in the heart of

Kerry. It is great to have the Castlemaine Events Committee on board to help with the planning of the event. If this event runs successfully, we would love to see it as an annual event as not only does it help raise money for the wonderful service of the Kerry Hospice it will also help keep my father’s memory alive.” Cathy concluded. All queries surrounding the Fair Day can be directed

Kerry Hoteliers Call On Government To Maintain Vital Supports For Tourism • • • •

Retention of 9% VAT rate and extension of business and employments support essential to tourism recovery 15,700 livelihoods supported by tourism in Kerry Occupancy figures nationally expected to reach 32% for 2021, compared to 73% for 2019 €5.3bn drop in hotel revenues for 2020 and 2021

Bernadette Randles, Chair of the IHF’s Kerry branch states: “As Ireland’s largest indigenous employer, tourism supported almost 270,000 livelihoods including 15,700 in Kerry prior to the pandemic. Our industry has been hardest hit by the restrictions, and the ensuing economic and financial impact of Covid has been devastating. The Government supports so far have been critical, and a lifeline for many businesses, helping to restore employment and support the viability of businesses until we get back to a more stable footing. However, we need a firm commitment that they will be retained until the impact of Friday 8th October 2021

the pandemic has passed. Tourism will recover, but it will take time.” Specifically, hotel and guesthouse owners are seeking the extension of the EWSS employment supports at current levels, to help businesses retain and develop their teams over the coming months along with the extension of the local authority rates waiver until June 2022, when the summer season begins. “A failure to act decisively now would have major economic implications given the reliance of many parts of the country on tourism for prosperity and employment, including in Kerry,” says Ms Randles.

Most travel agents are already contracting for 2023, yet they have no certainty around tourism VAT, and this is undermining advance bookings and ultimately tourism’s recovery,” says Ms Randles. Expectations are that overseas tourism into Ireland will remain severely constrained next year and is unlikely to recover to preCovid levels until 2024/2025.

YEP, ITS TIME FOR PUMPKINS!

You will have seen the pumpkins appearing in our local veg shop as Halloween is looming large ( think its gonna be a little bigger celebration than normal this year with everything that has gone on!). If youre thinking of carving a pumpkin then no need to waste the yummy flesh that you scoop out... just make a delicious soup with it... it really is a tasty soup dish!

PUMPKIN SOUP INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

Serves 6 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, finely chopped 1kg pumpkin or squash (try kabocha), peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks 700ml vegetable stock or chicken stock 150ml double cream For the croutons 2 tbsp olive oil 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread, crusts removed handful pumpkin seeds

METHOD • • • • • • • •

Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan , then gently cook 2 finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add 1kg pumpkin or squash, cut into chunks, to the pan, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden. Pour 700ml vegetable or chicken stock into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft. Pour 150ml double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a blender For an extra-velvety consistency you can pour the soup through a fine sieve. The soup can now be frozen for up to 2 months. To make the croutons: cut 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread into small squares. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan , then fry the bread until it starts to become crisp. Add a handful of pumpkin seeds to the pan, then cook for a few mins more until they are toasted. These can be made a day ahead and stored in an a sealed container Reheat the soup if needed, taste for seasoning, then serve scattered with croutons and seeds and drizzled with more olive oil, if you want.

Penneys Tralee to stock new collection in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Penneys is launching its first collection of leisure, nightwear, underwear and accessories designed and developed for those who have experienced breast cancer and undergone breast surgery. The new collection is informed by focus groups with cancer patients and oncology nurses who trialled and tested the products. The resulting collection has a focus on comfort and style and is designed to allow for ease of dressing post-surgery, with fabrics which are noted for their cooling qualities and soft touch. At the heart of the collection are two different types of postsurgery bras – a zip up bra with a front and back closure to allow for ease of dressing immediately after surgery and a lightly padded bra designed for women who have recovered from surgery.. The new collection has been modelled by four women who have experienced breast cancer and these images and products will feature in many Penneys stores throughout the month. Supporting the new range is a campaign running throughout Penneys stores in October to raise awareness of the importance of early detection Friday 8th October 2021

of breast cancer. The Irish Cancer Society worked with Penneys to create bespoke educational illustrations with information on breast awareness. These illustrations will be displayed in Penneys stores, on its social media channels and its website to encourage customers to be breast aware and to tell their doctor if something doesn’t feel normal for them. Frances Warbuton, one of the models featured in the new campaign commented: “It’s wonderful that Penneys is doing post-surgery underwear. It just makes things simple for us and makes things feel normal. It’s a wonderful thing. The new underwear range is a fantastic idea. It's practical but comfortable and makes it easier for facing everyday life. A lot of thought has gone into the design and material making the underwear feel supportive and luxurious.” As part of this campaign, Penneys has committed to donating €40,000 to

the Irish Cancer Society to support breast cancer research, which is part of a total global donation of €290,000 (£250,000) to local

Creating Our Future Roadshow to visit every county in Ireland Creating Our Future is a government-led national brainstorm that will involve the people of Ireland in a conversation on the role research can and should play in addressing opportunities, challenges and hopes for the future. Creating Our Future will ensure that the direction of research in Ireland is informed by the people it serves. Creating Our Future is asking people to submit their ideas about what researchers in Ireland should explore to create a better future through the dedicated online portal www.creatingourfuture.ie, which is open until the 30th November 2021. The Roadshow will be pulling up in towns across the country and will encourage members of the public to engage in a conversation with researchers over a cup of coffee, and

to submit an idea about an opportunity or challenge in their lives, community, Ireland or the world; or something they are curious or passionate about and would like researchers to explore. Encouraging people to visit the roadshow, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris said: “Over the course of the pandemic, we were reminded starkly of how much of our daily lives depend on the efforts of researchers to secure our economy, wellbeing, and health. As a forward-thinking country, we must ask how research can help meet the opportunities and challenges facing our society over the coming years. Creating our Future opens up this question to all. T RQ U I N G CINA R SAND ! KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS! 32 O PREMIUM ADVERTISING KEEP YOUR BUSINESS TRALEE BUYER BEWARE! THERES MONEY DUE ON THAT CAR!

The risk of buying a car with repayments still due remains unacceptably high – one-in-three in some cases – despite a fall in the number of such vehicles being offered for sale. If you buy a money-due car, there is the danger of it being seized by the finance company that is owed the outstanding repayments or lump sum, leaving you thousands of euro out of pocket. In its latest analysis, vehicle data site Cartell.ie reveals there has been a drop in overall levels of cars with repayments owed. However, it warns the danger of being landed with one remains relatively high unless you check. There are several reasons for the fall-off, but the main ones are likely to be the pandemic and post-Brexit environment. Experts analysed a sample of nearly 6,000 vehicles offered for sale and checked via the Cartell.ie website in the first six months of this year. While 34pc of the three-year-old vehicles were offered for sale with repayments still due, the volume had dropped year-on-year from 42pc for the first six months of last year. It still comes down to a one-in-three risk of unknowingly buying something that is not the seller’s to sell.It is a similar story with one-year-old vehicles (2020), where the level of such offerings is 28pc, down from 37pc last year. If you buy such a car, the lending institution that is owed the repayments and the true owner of the car can have it seized, leaving you at a total loss.Of two-yearold vehicles checked last year (2018 registration), there was a 38pc chance of them being on sale with money owed. The level has fallen to 32pc this year.Jeff Aherne of Cartell.ie said: “The overall percentages of vehicles offered for sale with finance outstanding in key registration years has fallen from 2020 levels, but buyers should not be complacent.“Even taking six-year-old vehicles as an example, nearly one in five of those still return outstanding finance.“Buyers are strongly advised to be cautious in the market as you cannot take good title of the car until the final payment has been paid to the financial institution. This means you may be buying a huge problem.(Motoring Indo.)

BRING BACK THE FORD CORTINA?

WE COULD possibly see a car bearing the name Ford Cortina in future as the brand battles waves of new product from China and Korea. While Ford is are not disclosing specific names or plans, it is saying that bringing old ‘emotional’ names to the fore could be one way of distinguishing its cars from the torrent of new competitors. It has done so with great success with the likes of the Mustang. Anyone for a Cortina? Or an Orion?

THE latest e-scooter company to announce plans to set up here when the law is changed claims that everyone using a shared e-scooter will contribute at least €1,560 a year in “unplanned spend such as at food and beverage stores”. That will give a boost to local and small businesses in cities and towns. Research and experience from other markets suggest such a spend, according to US transportation robotics company Superpedestrian. The company also claims it has developed the world’s first and only technology that stops a scooter from riding on the footpath in real time.(motoring indo)

FIESTA FACELIFT !

Ford has facelifted the Fiesta which includes a 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain in the line-up. What it calls ‘next generation’ technologies – such as new Matrix LED headlamps, 12.3-inch customisable instrument display and wrong-way alert – are now on the menu. And it has unveiled a new 200 PS Fiesta ST which benefits from a 10pc peak torque boost to 320 Nm. The basic car gets new styling outside and in and Ford claims the EcoBoost Hybrid 48-volt mild hybrid technology helps get the most out of fuel. The SUV-inspired Active version is made to look even more rugged. The 1-litre EcoBoost Hybrid engine comes with 125PS and 155PS outputs. The 125PS version can also come with a sevenspeed, Powershift dual-clutch automatic transmission. There are some notable driver assistant technologies, among them the wrong-way alert. This uses a windscreen-mounted camera and information from the navigation system to provide an audible and visual warning if you drive through two No Entry signs on a motorway ramp. Also on board is Adaptive Cruise Control and Speed Sign Recognition as well as Active Park Assist. Friday 8th October 2021

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER representatives of Jigsaw Kerry will be present to do a workshop with adolescents. Fingers crossed the weather will cooperate and a great day is had by the club and the wider community.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR WARRIORS AND FANS READY FOR POST LAY-OFF SUPERLEAGUE RETURN: It has been a busy week for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors as they officially launched their 2021/2022 season while continuing their build-up to Saturday nights SuperLeague opener in the Complex. And what an opener it will be as the 2019 champions (and 2020 runners-up in controversial circumstances) welcome Killorgin who are now playing as Team 360 Financial Killorglin to the Complex. And the Warriors are delighted that under Government guide-lines 60% capacity is allowed meaning there will be a great atmosphere for the first Kerry derby since lockdown. Before looking at the Warriors addition Kerry also has three other teams in the Nationals Leagues with Team Garveys St Mary’s Castleisland making their SuperLeague debut on Friday night with an away game at Glanmire. The two Killarney sides are in Men’s Division 1 action on Saturday night with Scotts Lakers away to Limerick Celtics and Killarney Cougars bringing top level basketball back to the Pres Gym with UCC Demons the visitors. Back to the Warriors and fans are looking forward to seeing the new signings in action. American Aaron Calixte, from the University of Oklahoma, Croation Nikola Roso, who played in Italy last season, and Latvian Rolands Elksnis who comes from a stink with the Manchester Giants will join stalwarts Kieran Donaghy, Darragh O’Hanlon, Eoin Quigley and team captain Fergal O’Sullivan. The Warriors have, since their return to the SuperLeague, have brought young talent through and a number of the u20’s have made the step-up to the senior side -including Steven Bowler, James Fernane, Keelan Crowe, Ziggy Kaletka and Fleming brothers Aaron and Padraig. In the hot seat for the new season is the very experienced John Dowling with Gareth Moore as Associate coach, Jimmy Diggins as assistant coach and team manager Kathleen Collins. Dowling said at the launch that this was a hugely proud day for himself and his family. “It’s a huge honour and I am delighted that I have been given the opportunity to take on this role after four years as Assistant coach and I have a great coaching set-up with me. On the game we again expect a massive challenge and looking back over the last few encounters there has been nothing between the sides and Saturday night will be no different. Let the games begin!!” JACK’S BACK: The ratification of Jack O’Connor as the new Kerry manager was completed on Monday night at the County Committee Meeting with Diarmuid Friday 8th October 2021

STAYING WITH RAHILLYS: The u12 Strand Road Blues girl’s side had a big win over Austin Stacks 5-06 to 1-05 and they will now meet John Mitchels in the Town League final. The Kerins O’Rahillys 12 Girls lost out to the same opposition. They will play Na Gaeil in the Shield Final.

Murphy and Micheal Quirke as selectors with Jack. The new Kerry senior hurling team management of Stephen Molumphy, as manager, Pat Bennett, Shane Briggs and Brendan O’Sullivan were ratified for a two year term.

The u16’s were delighted to get their season started in mid-week away to Castleisland Desmonds while the 17’s were involved in a score fest with Na Gaeil. The girls took the win 7-05 to 5-04 and are due to face MKL Gaels in the final.

SOCCER SHORTS: It was a busy weekend on national front for Kerry sides as well as all the games in the Kerry District and Kerry Schoolboys Leagues. In the underage League of Ireland the Kerry and Waterford u19’s drew 0-0 while the 17’s were hugely impressive defeating Wexford FC 5-0 in Ferrycarrig Park with Odhran Ferris 2, Samuel Aladesanusi, Cianan Cooney and Ronan Teehan all scoring. The Kerry 14’s ended their home games on a high with a 2-0 win over Carlow/Kilkenny thanks to goals from Dawid Grebowiec and Darragh Lynch. The Kerry Kennedy Cup 2021 campaign continued with a last minute 2-1 loss to Limerick District after Ronan Carroll had put them 1-0 up just after half time. In the Gaynor the 13’s went down to a strong Limerick Desmond side while the 15 girls had a great win away to West Cork with Izzy McGrath and Suvi O’Connor on the mark in a 3-0 win. This Saturday the Kerry 14’s head to UL to face Treaty United while on the same day at Mounthawk Park Cork City are the visitors in the 17’s for a 2pm kick off. On Sunday the 19’s welcome Longford Town to Mounthawk Park also kicking off at 2pm. On the national stage Gary O’Neill and his Shamrock Rovers teammates have one hand on retaining the SSE Airtricity Premier trophy. If they can defeat Dundalk tonight, Friday night, they will move 12 points clear of St Pats with 8 games remaining.

The senior ladies put in a great effort in the Junior C Championship losing by just three points 2-10 to 2-07.

STACKS INTO SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS LAST 4: Firstly while the relegation battle doesn’t involve a Tralee side there will still be huge interest in the game as either Dr Crokes or Killarney Legion will be playing Intermediate football next season!! At the right end of the Championship Austin Stacks have made the semifinals where they will be at home to Templenoe this Sunday in Connolly Park while in the other semi-final on the same day Kenmare Shamrocks are at home to Dingle. KERINS O’RAHILLYS FAMILY FUN DAY SUNDAY: This Sunday, October 10th, has Kerins O’Rahillys are the place to be with a Family Fun Day. The action gets underway at 2pm and it’s a free event for the greater Strand Road community and not just club members. On the day there will be a wide range of games and competitions and weather permitting a barbeque. All Covid guidelines will be followed and

In the boys section the great turn-out for the Academies continues. This week Brody Clifford took the u5’s Player of the Week award, Roisin Murphy, Brogan Brosnan, Caragh McCarthy and Amelia Healy were presented with medals for the u6 girls over the last few weeks, Alan O’Regan won the accolade for the u7 boys. The numbers were 2,4, 10 and 26 and the next jackpot will be e2,000. PARNELLS NEWS The club is delighted with the turn-out for its Run 4 Pieta fundraiser. The activities on Friday night saw some doing loops of the grounds at Caherslee while others walked / ran the Skinny Mile via Mounthawk. There was a much enjoyed cake sale hosted by the camogie teams while the participants were delighted with the hot cups of tea and coffee when they returned. On Saturday the u14’s and 16’s incorporated the run into their training while the Ladies held a Rounders4Pieta which proved hugely enjoyable. Donations can still be made on-line with details from the club. The u7 boys and girls led by manager David Lucid did a loop of the pitch to support the fundraiser and also enjoyed some of the treats from the cake sale. Before that the girls and boys put in a strong training session ahead of some end of season Blitzes. The u12 boys enjoyed a great win over Lixnaw in a challenge game taking the victory 4-04 to 1-01 in a game played in tough conditions. The u13 boys were in Limerick on Sunday at the St Patricks GAA invitational blitz. They defeated the hosts and then won against fellow Kerry side Firies. A win over Killacolla Gaels saw them meet the same opposition in the Cup final. And the Tralee boys came out on top after a great battle to win 3-05 to 3-03. Captain Kyle Benson was delighted to accept the Cup. The club was very well treated by the hosts who put on a great day for the players and travelling adults. The invitation to take part came from GDA whose home club were the hosts. This weekend the u12 boys are in Currans for the final of their County Competition.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE !

A CRUISE SHIP PASSED A TINY, ISOLATED ISLAND.

Everyone on board could see a bearded man on the island, shouting and desperately waving his hands. “Who is that man?” a passenger asked the ship’s captain. “Why is he so upset?” “I have no idea,” said the Captain, “but every year when we pass by here, he goes nuts.”

DOCTOR STARTS WRITING UP A NOTE WHEN THE NURSE WALKS IN AND SAYS, “DOCTOR, YOU CAN’T WRITE ANYTHING WITH A THERMOMETER...” Doctor looks down and shakes his head. “Looks like some dumb ass has my pen again.”

IN THE WORDS OF BILL MURRAY...

An Irish man knocks on the door of an old lady, he says he’s broke and looking for work. The old lady says “Sure, I’ll pay you to paint my porch.” So she gives the Irish man some paint and he leaves. One hour later the man comes back, “Are you already done?” the lady asked, “Aye.” said the Irish man, “But it’s not a porch it’s a Mazda.”

THE IRISH MILLIONAIRE

“I haven’t got a clue.” said Mick, ‘’So I’ll use last lifeline and phone my friend Paddy back home in Dublin ..” Mick called up his mate, and told him the circumstances and repeated the question to him. “Feckin hell, Mick!” cried Paddy. “Dat’s simple it’s a cuckoo.” “Are you sure?” “I’m feckin sure.” Mick hung up the phone and told Chris, “I’ll go with cuckoo as my answer.” “Is that your final answer?” asked Chris. “Dat it is.” There was a long, long pause and then the presenter screamed, “Cuckoo is the correct answer! Mick, you’ve won 1 million euros!” The next night, Mick went round to Paddy’s to buy him a drink. “Tell me, Paddy? How in Heaven’s name did you know it was da Cuckoo that doesn’t build its own nest?” “Because he lives in a Feckin clock!”

WHOOPPS !!

I was at the ATM when an old lady came up to me and asked to check her balance... So I pushed her over.

WHY DID GOD CREATE ADAM BEFORE EVE? To let him get a word in.

Mick, from Dublin , appeared on ‘Who Wants Bartender says, ‘Sorry we don’t serve food here. Everything is riding on this question. Will you go for WATCH? it?” Don’t worry, they will tell you. “Sure,” said Mick. “I’ll have a go!” “Which of the following birds does NOT build its Know any funny Jokes? own nest?
