The
Sunshine and Smiles at the 2023 Donal Walsh Spa Day
The ‘Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge’ took place on Sunday, May 28th, at Spa N.S. The event, organized by the school in honor of their former student Donal Walsh, attracted a large crowd who came together for a day of family fun. This year marked the 10th anniversary of Donal’s passing, making the event even more meaningful.
The school principal, Peter Linehan, expressed his gratitude to the dedicated committee and volunteers who worked tirelessly to create a special event that embodied Donal’s message of living life to the fullest.
The Parents Association played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the event, preparing everything meticulously.
The school grounds were bustling with activity as over five hundred people participated in various
Take a Look
activities. The students organized a market, while children from 5th and 6th classes arranged entertaining games and challenges. The highlight of the day was the ‘Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge,’ a run/walk looped course that started and ended at the school. Donal’s parents, Fionbarr and Elma, along with his sister Jema, were present to officially kick off the run/walk.
The event had a fantastic atmosphere, and participants of all ages enjoyed the beautiful sunshine as they completed the course. The winners of the men’s section were Kerry coach Arthur Fitzgerald, followed closely by local runners David Chute and Liam O’Donnell. In the women’s section, local girl Evie O’Sullivan claimed first place, with Hannah Redican and Anna Chute close behind.
The day was filled with laughter and enjoyment, with street performer Tommy Broderick entertaining the crowd with his puppet show. A delightful barbecue and refreshments were provided by the Parents Association.
Loved the end result by PAT & James of Nordic kitchens & wardrobes by Lots Furniture!!
Elma Walsh expressed her joy about returning to Spa N.S., a place where Donal had many happy days. She commended the committee for organizing a truly special day that Donal would have loved.

So whats really happened this week with the Rose Of Tralee!
Here goes ...as far as we can tell here in the Tralee Advertiser ..
1. Press release put out earlier this week by Anthony O Gara , Chairman of the Festival Of Kerry , stating that the MTU will once again be the venue for the 2 Rose Selection nights on TV , and also that the Festival would step away from organising a street entertainment programme this year and that there would be no Rose Ball this year , being replaced instead with ‘a new , more affordable and accessible event ‘ ( citing mainly cost issues as to the reason why )
2. Kerry County Council released a press release on Wednesday afternoon after meeting with the Festival members stating that ‘ A family Festival will go ahead during this years Rose of Tralee ‘
3, Already meetings and conversations are happening between Tralee Chamber, Tralee Vintners VFI , Kerry Co Co , Tralee Municipal District members and the Festival , with VFI Chairman Johnny Mc Elligott ( Sean Ogs ) stating that
he was ‘supremely confident ‘ that a full street entertainment programme will be put together by the business community and the people of Tralee He said that a preliminary plan could be in place within the next week or two.
...In essence , these are issues that have faced the Festival and Tralee in years gone by before ...Remember when Mark Sullivan( Rose Hotel ) and Danny Leane Snr ( Abbey Inn ) were responsible for organising the collection for the Street Entertainment Fund , when the Festival was saved from fading away by Anthony O Gara and his team , nearly 20 years ago ! When there was no Dome for a few years , in order to cut costs , and the Festival was based in the Brandon Hotel , managed by Hotel Supremo Peter Mc Dermott ( now the Playdium owner ) and the Rose Ball happened in the Conference Centre for a few years ( I know , I was the Rose Ball DJ ! I still am ,,,well I was until this week ! ) And when it was former Festival GM Oliver Hurleys
wish to ‘Get the Dome back ‘ and that happened too after the Festival relocated to the Rose Hotel ...Believe me , Anthony O Gara is right when he says he believes’ the people of Tralee will rise to the challenge provided by this opportuinity ‘ . There is enough ability , brain power and confidence in this Town to ensure Irelands longest running and biggest Festival

..Chris ShorttKerry FC fail to avenge against Bray!
KERRY FC 0–2 BRAY WANDERERS FC
Kerry FC aimed to avenge their previous defeat against Bray Wanderers in a home game at Mount Hawk Park. Despite their newfound confidence from their recent win, Kerry struggled to create chances in the cautious first half. Both teams had limited opportunities, with Bray’s defense catching Kerry offside multiple times. Bray had their best chance with Dane Massey’s shot, but Kerry’s goalkeeper made a solid save. Towards the end of the half, Kerry had a couple of opportunities, but Sean McGrath’s shot went over the goal and Kevin Williams missed from
a corner.
In the second half, Bray took the lead through a goal by Harry Groome, deflating Kerry’s momentum. Kerry struggled to create chances and were outperformed in midfield. Despite their efforts, they couldn’t find an equalizer. Bray sealed their victory with a disputed penalty for a handball by Ryan Kelliher, converting it for a 2-0 win.
While Kerry displayed confidence from their previous win, their second-half performance fell short. They will need to address their issues and aim for a victory in their upcoming home game against

A novel by local girl Denise Brassil
We are thrilled to announce the nationwide release of “What Anna Did Next”, a ground-breaking debut novel by County Kerry’s very own Denise Brassil. The book, published by the esteemed Canterbury based publishing house, Conrad press Ltd, is available across Ireland from July 2023. Written in the refreshingly candid and humorous voice of the Brassil sisters, “What Anna Did Next” is a spirited tale of one woman’s journey to find herself amidst the trials and tribulations of life, love, and the pursuit of happiness. Readers will find themselves immersed in a world that is at once hilariously real, emotionally poignant, and irresistibly Irish. The novel traces the life of Anna Moran, a young woman from Dingle in West Kerry, whose
life is teetering between two vital quests – the pursuit of the perfect job and for once, true love. With her relationship status as eternally ‘open to anything’, Anna embarks on an expedition of self-discovery, leaving behind a decade of wildness and the incessant hum of small-town gossip. But the road to self-discovery is not an easy one, and Anna is faced with some difficult decisions when tragedy strikes.
“What Anna Did Next” is not just a novel; it’s a tribute to Denise Brassil’s late sister, Martha, with whom she began co-writing the story over a decade ago. Denise’s determination to finish their shared story in the wake of Martha’s untimely passing in 2018 is a testament to the enduring
spirit of love and sisterhood.
Denise Brassil is a native of the breath-taking west coast of Ireland. Her love for the outdoors is evident in her storytelling, capturing the essence of County Kerry in her vivid descriptions. Currently working on her second novel, Denise lives with her beloved dog Moll.
We invite you to dive into the heartwarming, laugh-out-loud journey of Anna Moran and experience the magic of Denise Brassil’s storytelling. “What Anna Did Next” will be available as a special preview at LISTOWEL WRITER’S WEEK on Thursday June 1, 3pm at Listowel Library.

A MAN WALKS INTO A BAR
A man walks into a bar and orders six whiskies. He lines them up in a row and knocks back the first, third, and fifth glasses. Then he gets up to leave. “ Don’t you want the others?” asks the barman.”You’ve only had three of your whiskies.” “Best not” replies the man, “My doctor said it was only okay to have the odd drink.”
MY EX MADE THIS FACEBOOK STATUS ABOUT HOW SHE FEELS LIKE SOMEONE IS WATCHING HER...
...but I’ve been following her around all week and I can guarantee no one is stalking her.
A GUY TOOK HIS BLONDE GIRLFRIEND TO HER FIRST FOOTBALL GAME...
After the game, he asked her if she liked it. She replied, “it was fun but I don’t see why they made such a big fuss over 25 cents.”
The guy asked, “What do you mean?”
And she said, “Well, at the beginning of the game, they flipped a coin and someone took it, and for the rest of the game, they kept shouting ‘Get the quarter back! Get the quarter back!’”
DONALD TRUMP IS BOARDING AIR FORCE ONE
When all of a sudden, an assassin jumps out and points the gun at Trump. A member of the secret service sees this and yells, “Mickey Mouse!” This startles the would-be assassin so much that it gives the other agents time to apprehend him. While the agents interrogate the assassin, Donald Trump pulls the agent aside and says, “ Why did you yell Mickey Mouse when you saw the assassin?” The agent says, “Well, I got nervous and meant to say Donald Duck.”
There was only one problem, the captain’s parrot saw the shows every week and began to understand what the magician did in every trick.
Once he understood that, he started shouting in the middle of the show:
“Look, it’s not the same hat!”
“Look, he’s hiding the flowers under the table!”
“Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades ?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything; it was the captain’s parrot, after all.
One day the ship had an accident and sunk. The magician found himself on a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean, and of course the parrot was by his side. They stared at each other with hate, but did not utter a word. This went on for several days.
After a week the parrot finally said: “Okay, I give up. What’d you do with the boat?”
I STARTED DATING THIS BLONDE CHICK LAST NIGHT.
“Do you have any kids?” she asked.
“Yes,” I replied.
“I have one child that’s just under two.”
She said, “I might be blonde, but I know how many one is.”
A MAGICIAN WAS WORKING ON A CRUISE SHIP IN THE CARIBBEAN. THE AUDIENCE WOULD BE DIFFERENT EACH WEEK, SO THE MAGICIAN ALLOWED HIMSELF TO DO THE SAME TRICKS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Q; Can a Binge Eating Disorder ( BED ) be prevented?
Beginning treatment as soon as symptoms emerge is helpful but not essential. Not every instance of BED can be prevented, but an awareness of the early stages of the eating disorder may contribute to successful treatment.
Also, encouraging healthy behaviors such as self care, e ective communication of needs and fostering eating habits may be very helpful. It is also necessary to have a realistic and positive attitude about food and body image , this may help prevent the development or worsening of eating disorders.
Being at war with ourselves and our bodies takes up so much of our energy and is not helpful. We cannot hate or shame ourselves into change...it has to be done from love.
