Requiem Mass on Saturday morning at 10.30am in The Church of The Resurrection, Park Road, Killarney, followed by burial in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery.
Huge outpouring of tributes for Ned Ned was a truly remarkable and gifted individual who touched an awful lot of lives in the most positive of ways and it was a real privilege to have known him - going right back to the 1960s when he impressed us all so much as an outstanding member of a great Mid Kerry football team. The honesty and dynamism he showed then carried through big-time to all the colossal things he did in later life.... John & Liz Ned was a lovely gentleman and a pleasure to have known him. May he rest in peace.... Eileen

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Angela has rented a holiday cottage for the Dingle Peninsula area for the month of August. She and her family are staying in the cottage, and they have many of their extended family coming to stay who may be bringing pets. She has paid a very large deposit and she is wondering what her rights around holiday lettings are. Holiday lettings are not covered by the residential tenancies board but are rather covered by consumer law. As it is a service the normal service implied terms apply unless they are excluded under the holiday letting contract and these are that the service 1. 2. 3. 4.
Is provided with proper care and diligence That the holiday provider has the appropriate skills to do the service. That materials used are sound and fit for purposes That any goods supplied are of merchantable i.e., acceptable quality.
However it is important to read the terms and conditions as a holiday rental service may exclude liability in relation to the above e.g. where you are renting out a wild and wonderful barn. It would be important to ensure that where you are booking the holiday rental is a genuine one and if possible look over reviews etc before parting with any money. Check in particular cancellation clauses both for yourself and the holiday letting service. Be vigilant for rental scams. It is possible that people could cancel if they feel that they could get more money and would have easy get out clauses in the contract. If terms and conditions are not readily available ask for them and make sure there is clause allowing you to get out of the contract if there is a repeat of the government guidelines/ pandemic type restrictions, family illness, health and safety requirements. Check carefully payment conditions, when does the holiday let have to be fully paid for and your cancellation rights e.g. if the whole family is sick. Check what you are getting in the service for your money e.g. will you have tv, internet, microwave, cooking facilities, bedding, fireplace, fuel, central heating etc. The regulations covering e.g. hot and cold running water, heating etc for residential tenancies don’t apply to holiday lettings. Check also about the requirements for getting your deposit back and what is required for that. Check also additional charges like cleaning and electricity as they often come out of the deposit. If anything is unclear clarify it by email so you have written confirmation. The Summer is here. THE TEAM AT THE CLINIC ARE HERE TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ON COSMETIC AND HAIR RESTORATION ISSUES. Every morning when I am stopped in traffic, I notice your billboard advertising hair loss. My hairline is starting to recede and I feel it is time to do something about it. How exactly does it work?
Adam
Hi Adam, In the CHRC, we are the only healthcare provider in Ireland with the state-of-the-art ARTAS iX robotic hair restoration device; a minimally invasive hair restoration system that uses artificial intelligence to deliver precise, natural looking results.
Are you struggling with social media?
The first step is a one-to-one consultation with our surgeon, to discuss your hair loss concerns. Our surgeon will examine the hair loss, customise a personalised hairline design and develop a tailored treatment plan with the support of the ARTAS iX robotic system, to suit your needs. Every hair case is unique and we use a minimally invasive hair restoration method called robotic follicular unit extraction, which allows the robotic removal of individual hair follicles from your donor area, without a scalp incision and no linear scar visible. The minimally invasive process protects your existing healthy hair in both the donor and the newly implanted area. Downtime is minimal and recovery time is swift with many people returning to work the following day, with no hospital stay required.

AND NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS... from The Tralee Advertiser Team and Tralee Chamber Alliance
Summer Arrives with Return of Tourism Kiosk By Georgie Downes
THE Tralee Tourism Kiosk is back on The Mall and, as everybody knows, when that happens, summer has officially begun. This year, the Tralee Chamber Alliance has recruited over 25 volunteers who are ready to man the kiosk from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, in two hours shifts. Claire Needham has been volunteering for the past six years and is thrilled to be back on the job for the coming tourism season. “We mostly get Irish people looking for information but there are plenty of tourists from abroad too.” She said. “If people want a few ideas on where to go and what to do, there’s loads to recommend. I direct them to the County Museum and the Aquadome if they have kids or over to the Wetlands Centre and of course, I’d encourage folks to try the lovely River Walk by
the canal over to Blennerville.” Ann O Donnell from the Tralee Chamber Alliance co-ordinates the volunteering efforts and admits that without the locals, who give up their time for free, the information kiosk wouldn’t be a runner. “We are really grateful to everyone who signs up to help out. The lived, local knowledge they offer is priceless. Visitors really appreciate that authentic experience.” Ann said. The kiosk will close in September. Check it out for maps of Tralee, app downloads, activity booklets and all sorts of event information for the coming months, but in the meantime, if you fancy a spot of volunteering, send an email to ann@tralee.ie
Here’s a good news story about our hospital from Damien Met Damien Fitzgerald, owner of Tralee Printing in Monavalley, on the street during the week . Noticed he was nursing his arm in a sling ... It turns out he recently injured himself in a fall and had to go over (as we all would) to the A & E Department in Kerry General Hospital (UHK) “I was in and out in under 3 hours “ says Damien ..”.They really were a credit to UHK ...Fantastic Doctors & Nurses ...they couldnt do enough for me .. Mine is a lovely story so I have to tell people about them “

Deja Vu Car Rally shines in Tralee ...as Recovery Haven benefit by 40k The helmet that Paul Nagle used during the 2021 World Rally Championship winning season was sold for a staggering €25,000 at a charity auction in Tralee on Saturday night. Rally Championship contender Craig Breen and five-time WRC event winner Kris Meeke participated in a tour of famous West Kerry rally stages on Saturday. Other famous drivers in the 150-strong entry list included multiple Irish champion Austin MacHale and former European Rally Champion Patrick Snijers from Belgium. After the road run, 300 people attended a gala dinner at the event’s headquarters, The Rose Hotel. During the dinner, items were auctioned off. Items included paintings of famous rally drivers, motorsport trips to museums and, of course,
the helmet which was signed by almost every top name associated with the World Rally Championship over the last 20 years. Nearly €40,000 was raised during the auction with the majority of that sum going to Recovery Haven. Nagle will donate a portion of the helmet sale to his home football club, Fossa GAA too. The helmet was sold to New York-based Irish rally driver Paul Rowley. An additional €3,500 was raised by individual donations and bucket collections along the route. “I don’t have the words, we are humbled that we were

Kerry Researcher Wins MTU Commercial Invention of the Year Kerry based researcher, Dr Joanna Tierney from the Dept of Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Shannon ABC, Munster Technology University (MTU) Kerry Campus was presented with the MTU Commercial Invention of Year 2021 at this year’s virtual ceremony. The MTU Invention of the Year awards is an annual event that takes place as part of Innovation and Enterprise month at MTU. The awards recognise and acknowledge the work and effort that staff have put into their invention declarations during 2021 and to encourage researchers to engage in the research commercialisation process. MTU researchers submitted 20 invention disclosure forms (IDFs) to the Innovation and Enterprise Office during this time period. The IDFs were judged by an external panel Dr Declan Weldon, Director of Innovation and Engagement from University of Glasgow and Dr Paul Dillon, Director of Technology Transfer Office, from University of Limerick. Each submission was judged based on several criteria: scientific merit, innovative
factor, development stage, potential benefit to society, marketability and patentability. Dr Tierney’s work on the control of coccidiosis in poultry, funded by an Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund, earned her the award. Coccidiosis is caused by Eimeria protozoan parasites and is an important disease in poultry and neonates in animal farming. It causes diarrhoea, weight loss, emaciation, and in extreme cases, death. The invention employs natural, anti-parasitic, anti-microbial, immune-modulating and anti-oxidant activities as an alternative to the current industry treatments in use today for coccidiosis control. Speaking about the award, Dr Tierney said “I’m delighted to receive this award, and I’m grateful to Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland and MTU for their support over the last few years. I’d like to thank my colleagues at Shannon Applied Biotechnology Centre, the Department of Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the research office
Photo details: L-R: President of MTU Professor Maggie Cusack and Dr Joanna Tierney team in MTU. I would like to acknowledge and thank the people who I’ve worked with over the years on this project; Drs Michelle Ryan, Joanna Przyborska and David Kelly. Our work on developing an alternative coccidiosis control solution is critically important as poultry is set to become the world’s most consumed meat protein and poultry producers face increased pressure to control this parasite disease which contributes to significant economic loss as reflected in
poor weight gains and reduced feed conversion.” The Commercial Invention of Year award was presented to Dr Joanna Tierney recently by the President of MTU, Professor Maggie Cusack. Another award was presented at the ceremony for MTU Technical Invention of the Year 2021. This was awarded to the CAPPA (Centre for Advanced Photonics and Process Analysis) project, PIXCAN.

is all about providing help and support to those living with a life-limiting illness and their families. Hospice care is provided either in specialist units in the hospice or in the person’s own home with specialist palliative trained home care nurses.
Volunteers nationwide will be selling sunflower merchandise to raise vital funds for local hospice and specialist palliative homecare services. Members of the public who wish to support their local hospice by donating online can do so by sponsoring a virtual sunflower in memory of a loved one at www. togetherforhospice.ie/ sunflowerdays.
With hospices nationwide needing to raise approximately €20 million each year to continue to provide their person-centred loving care to patients and their families, Hospice Sunflower Days aims to raise as much funding as possible for hospice and specialist palliative homecare services across Ireland, with all funds raised locally, staying locally.
Hospice care and homecare
Speaking ahead of the return
of the on-street collection, Jack Shanahan, Chairperson, Kerry Hospice Foundation Fundraising said, “We are thrilled to be able to return to our traditional onstreet collection this year as part of our fundraising campaign and we are calling on members of the public throughout the country to donate what they can to help support their local hospice or homecare service. With all funds raised locally, staying locally, together we can all make a difference to the lives of hospice patients and their families.”
You can support Kerry Hospice Foundation by donating to the on-street volunteers on Friday 10th or Saturday 11th June, or by dedicating a sunflower in memory of a loved one online today at www. togetherforhospice.ie/ sunflowerdays
A letter to the Editor
JUST PLEASE STOP What to say? Has it all been said? Yes, I believe it has over and over and over. Sexual abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, online abuse, psychological abuse, Racial abuse, Homophobic abuse, child abuse, elder abuse, spiritual abuse, and physical abuse. Now stop for a second to pause and think of the weight and depth of what you just read. Let’s calculate the impact of all the above. Once evaluated any 1 person that is a victim to abuse has the enormity of the ripple effect. In this case I can assure you assure you twice it is far from pleasant. Research, observation, and personal experience shows a decline in mental health, and in turn an increase in self-harm, addiction, fear, anxiety, depression, rejection, abandonment, isolation, and the inevitable Death. Then who is the attacker here? An attack is just that an attack. When there is no

defence the attack and the attacker claims its prey. This is a very real world when the perpetrator plays the role of prosecutor, judge, and jury, passing sentence with no consideration for the outcome. When we talk about the ripple effect, we now need to consider the aftermath. Moms, Dads, brother sister children family neighbours and friends. Each attack is multiple. The seriousness of divide is heart-breaking and in a lot of cases life changing or life ending. If the strong, brave, and courageous, survivors, and their allies did not stand and turn to face off and fight for their place in this world then I can once again assure you without them a lot of us would not be here. This piece is written due to recent seriousness of Hate-crime in our so-called great town of Tralee. It is very very very sad that we nod at each other, fist bump, high five, give a beep on the street and sit to have lunch share conversation and
eat. Two out of 5 play Jekyll and Hyde. To the haters hear this, History repeats itself and the universal law will be the executioner in the end. Time nor tide wait for no person. Sustainable Fashion Wins the Day at the #CollegeClothes and #ClassClothes Competition. Cara Credit Union teamed up with Career Ahead to organise an amazing Clothes Competition aimed at College Students and Secondary School Students nationwide. On Saturday, 28th May, the prizes were presented to the College Student and Secondary School Student who submitted the best outfit from a style perspective and a cost perspective; while at the same time supporting charitable organisations. Social Media Influencers Chloe Koyce and Fashionable Frank were in attendance to meet the winners and present the prizes.Megan Doyle an MTU Kerry Campus Wildlife Biology Student who originates from Dublin was the winner in the College Student category. Megan’s outfit was a pink jumpsuit (€3.90) and a necklace (€1.80), total cost €5.70, both purchased from the Irish Cancer Society Shop. Treasure Vlogs from Scoil Chriost Ri in Portlaise was the winner of the Secondary School Category. Treasure’s outfit was a dress, purchased from Oxfam at a cost of €4.50. Treasure teamed this up with previously owned boots and bag.
“The concept for the competition arose from the fact that I deal with so many students who are surviving on very tight budgets, yet it is expected they dress appropriately for work placements, academic presentations, and college events. The ability to present themselves well also contributes immensely to a student’s confidence and self-esteem, and all students love to shop and dress up for social occasions” said Mary Lucey, Career Ahead. Commenting further, Siobhan Donnelly Marketing & Development Manager of Cara Credit Union said “Cara Credit Union were delighted to support this unique and creative competition. We are constantly seeking out new ways to support college students and secondary school students. The introduction of our free student current account and debit card is aimed specifically at this cohorts. The competition demonstrated the initiative, creativity, and care for the environment that students possess. The organisers wish to thank the amazing panel of social media influencers
and business representatives who judged the competition – all who are giving up their own time free of charge to support college and secondary school students. Sinead O Brien (SineadsCurvyStyle), Clodagh Moore, Frank Cronin (Fashionable Frank), Shauna Cashell (StyleSearch), Chloe Koyce and Aoife Sheehy (Corporate Social Responsibility Advisor at Primark) were the judges. The prize giving lunch was held and sponsored by Ballyseedy Garden Centre. The guests and winners were treated to a makeover before
the lunch by Sean Taffee and CH Chemists. The guests got to savour what Tralee has to offer by staying the night and dining in Benner’s Hotel and at Molly J’s. Career Ahead and Cara Credit Union wish to thank all the local businesses for their support with this project. Ring of Beara Cycle Back To Bask In Unbeatable Sunshine! An impressive return for the Ring of Beara Cycle on Saturday saw glorious clear blue skies, bright sunshine and temperatures as high as 20 degrees for an incredible day’s cycle around the peninsula. This popular cycle sportive, has been much anticipated since it was last able to take place in 2019. Now in its eighth year, and including the ever popular Kids’ Cycle, it was embraced by riders from all over country, who started and finished in Kenmare Town, Co Kerry, taking in the unbridled beauty of Co Cork’s Beara Peninsula. Cyclists enjoyed to complete their choice of two challenging routes: an 110km or 140km looped route, through the magnificent mountains, valleys
and the rugged coastline of the Beara Peninsula.Seven charities are set to benefit from this year’s Ring of Beara Cycle, with an estimated total of €50,000 being distributed amongst Irish Air Ambulance, Castletownbere Community Hospital, Castletownbere Day Care Centre, Kenmare Special Needs Group, Kenmare Family Resource Centre, Kenmare Palliative Care Group and St John of Gods. Ring of Beara Cycle Organisers were delighted to have been able to make a presentation to President Michael D Higgins of a framed Ring of Beara cycle jersey when he visited Kenmare the day before the event on Friday 27th June, but were unable to persuade him to take part
in the cycle! In addition to the adults’ cycle, a popular and important part of the Ring of Beara Cycle is the Kids’ Cycle. This happy and fun event is free for kids between 3rd and 5th class, and around 200 children took part this year in the 2km loop route of Kenmare Town, with each little cyclist receiving a much-treasured finisher’s medal. A first for this year’s Ring of Beara Cycle was the introduction of electric bikes. Organisers recognise that some of the hills around Beara can be very steep, so the decision to allow participants to complete the course on e-bikes made sure the cycle continues to be as inclusive as possible. Incorporated into the route was a spare battery
stop at Castletownbere, and the organisers are delighted to report that the initiative was well received by participants. A Ring of Beara Cycle regular who took alternative transport to another level was Jake B who completed his cycle of Ring of Beara entirely on a penny farthing! A huge thank you is extended to local organisations, community groups and sports clubs who helped with the marshaling of the event, the food stops and at the finish line, in addition to everyone who came out to support and welcome the cyclists. The Ring of Beara Cycle is already looking forward to holding this event again next year, with a provisional date of Saturday 27th May 2023.

Vital Eyes’ at Killarney Spa ...a real treat! The eyes are the window to the soul. If that is the case what does our under nourished, fatigued eye zone say about us? This sensitive area quickly carries the burdens of lack of sleep, signs of age and lack of hydration. Not to mention the plight of incoming hay fever season and the wonderful array of allergies that come with this time of year. The Spa, at the Killarney Plaza, know that this area is key to a youthful, invigorated look. Their Vital Eyes Cold Stone facial, not only visibly plumps and contributes to anti-aging for a silky smooth finish, it delicately nurtures the most delicate part of the
face. The chilled stone is fatigue fighting and wrinkle smoothing while Decléor’s unique toning eye technique stimulates micro- circulation and de-congests and de-puffs. This transformative formula leaves contact lens wearers, hay fever sufferers with a dramatically brighter and youthful looking eye zone. The Vital Eyes Cold Stone Facial is the perfect pick me up for the tired and busy, a perk up before ( or after) a night out. Or just an opportunity to self-care for rejuvenation to this delicate area. Take some time to close your tired eyes and let them work their magic at the Spa at the Killarney Plaza.

Crowds come out to meet new lifeboat Lizzie!
Crowds came out in the sunshine to see Fenit RNLI’s new inshore lifeboat officially named Lizzie last weekend The new lifeboat is being named after Liz Fraser, a Southwark born actor, wellknown for roles on stage and screen over a career spanning decades. The honour of the lifeboat naming was given to Jan Bolt, the station’s administration officer and wife to the late station mechanic Bob Bolt. Guests on the day included the RNLI’s new Head of Region for Lifesaving, Anna Classon, in her first visit to the Kerry lifeboat station and RNLI Trustee and Council chairperson Dr. John Killeen, The ceremony included a Service of Dedication which was presided over by Fr. Francis Nolan and Rvd. Jim Stephens. Musical accompaniment was provided by The Tralee Pipe Band, Oidreacht, managed by Michelle O’Sullivan, Fenit School Choir and Dave Buckley who performed the Lifeboat Anthem ‘Home from the Sea’ to close the
ceremony. The Chairman of the Lifeboat Manager Group and station Medical Advisor Tom McCormack was MC for the ceremony and opened the proceeding paying tribute to the donor and all fundraisers who support the work of the RNLI.
RNLI Trustee and Chairperson of the Irish Council Dr. John Killeen acknowledged the incredible gift by Ms. Frazer. ‘Being charitable was part of her nature. The legacy that she has left behind and which is here today, will go to sea to save lives for many years to come.’ Dr. Killeen also spoke of the work of the men and women who volunteer for Fenit RNLI: ‘When we talk about lifesaving in the RNLI, there are two parts to it. One is the lifeboat, and the other is the volunteers. There is a fantastic history of lifesaving here in Fenit. We value and appreciate the work being done on behalf of the community.’ In accepting the lifeboat into the care of the station, Fenit
RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Gerard O’Donnell, said: ‘This is a great and proud day for us. This boat along with the All-Weather lifeboat which we already have, helps provide a great service here to the Tralee Bay and extended areas.’ He concluded by addressing the lifeboat crew of Fenit RNLI, past and present. ‘Over the years you have given of your time consistently, irrespective of weather conditions which at times can be horrendous. Day or night, you have never failed to respond when the pager has
been activated. To all our past and present, members of our RNLI station, be proud of the service you provide, be proud of the countless lives you have helped to save and finally on behalf of all users of the sea and inland waters, thank you for being there to help save those who get into difficulty on the water.’ Following the naming of the lifeboat, the Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115 carried out a training exercise with the new D-class lifeboat, to the delight of the watching crowds.

METHOD In a large bowl, toss the tomatoes with the cherries, Italian pepper, bread, red onion, vinegar, garlic, 1/2 cup of the olive oil and a very generous pinch each of salt and pepper. Let the gazpacho base stand at room temperature for 2 hours In batches, puree the gazpacho base until very smooth, about 2 minutes. Transfer to another large bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight Meanwhile, in a small saucepan of simmering water, blanch the basil until tender, about 1 minute. Drain well and cool under running water.
