LEGAL MATTERS CORNER
The importance of making a Will.
Daniel and Marie are a young married couple with three children under 18. The house they reside in is in Daniel’s name. they are wondering is it necessary for them both to do wills.
It is really important for one’s loved one’s to do a will. The normal reasons for making a will include the following
• It is much easier for relatives left behind.
• It can reduce tax liabilities.
• One can provide properly for beneficiaries under 18 or disability with a trust.
• It is a cleaner, cheaper, more efficient way of transferring property.
• It is the chance to get the last word in without a hope of a reply!
But in Daniel and Marie’s case it is even more important as if Daniel dies without making a will the property will devolve two thirds to Marie and a third between the three children. Marie’s hands are tied then in relation to doing anything with the property until the children are all over 18 years as it would involve expenses litigation otherwise. In addition to property Daniel and Marie ideally would have a mutual life policy providing for a sum of money to the other if anything happened them. Sometimes it is only by going in and discussing a will with a solicitor that it prompts people to put in place necessary safety nets for a family. Most married couples do mirror image wills leaving everything to each other and appointing each other as executor and then providing for a common accident situation whereby they appoint testamentary guardians for their infant children and also executors/trustees to manage any assets or money left for the benefit of the infant children. Many married couples keep their assets in joint names which provides for easier changeover of ownership if anything happens either one of them. So while Marie might have few assets in her name she may have life policy proceeds, shares, a bank account and personal belongings which she may leave by will as well of course as any winnings on lotto/horses or monies accumulated in her lifetime. She may also be the beneficiary of another’s estate in her lifetime which can devolve by way of her will once she has made one.

Keep it simple. Be Clear. Inform executors that are the managers of your will that they are being appointed especially if they are acting as Guardians as well of infant children. The Testamentary Guardians have day to day care of your children if anything happens both of you. It is a good idea to do a Trust Will for infant children providing for executors/trustees to manage assets and money for the benefit of the infant children.. It is also good to consider a charitable bequest as they are tax efficient. Statistically in Ireland Will bequests to charities are quite low so it is a good way to benefit your favour registered charity by leaving a will bequest.

Impressive Kia EV9 to be followed by smaller, big range EV3
The Kia EV9, with its colossal size and sleek design, has stunned many with its impressive and reliable range. A key factor in this achievement is the drag coefficient, an essential element in a car’s range efficiency. The EV9’s engineers managed to reduce it to a remarkable 0.28 by optimizing airflow underneath the vehicle, significantly lowering wind resistance.
Now, Kia is leveraging this technology to introduce a more compact and budget-friendly version: the EV3. Essentially a scaled-down model of the EV9, the EV3 retains the robust and squared-
off features of its larger counterpart. The design elements are strikingly similar, including the boxy lines, LED daytime running lights, and the sloping roofline leading to the hatchback tailgate. Measuring 4.3 meters in length, 1.5 meters in height, and 1.8 meters in width, the EV3 also boasts a generous 460-liter boot capacity.
Aesthetics aside, the critical question is about the range. The entry-level EV3 comes with a 58.3 kWh battery, promising around 400 km, while the long-range version features an 81.4 kWh battery, claiming up to 600 km. As always, manufacturer claims should be taken

with a pinch of salt until real-world results are available.
Inside, the EV9’s influence is evident.
The interior sports a 30-inch wraparound widescreen design with two 12.3-inch screens for infotainment and driver information. Despite the modern touch, Kia has retained traditional buttons on the steering wheel for essential controls like cruise control and navigation,
offering a blend of old and new. The EV3 will hit the Irish market in October, with pricing yet to be announced. However, given the vehicle’s potential to boost sales, competitive pricing is expected. The EV3 promises to be a compelling addition to Kia’s lineup, merging the brand’s advanced technology with a more accessible package
Award winning ‘Food Dudes’ Presentation Day at The Ashe Hotel
Primary school teachers from County Kerry, recently joined teaching colleagues from across the region for a Food Dudes Presentation Day at The Ashe Hotel, Tralee to celebrate the achievements of schools that have completed their four-year participation in the awardwinning Food Dudes Programme.
The four-year curriculum-linked programme includes a year of intervention, followed by three in-school Food Dudes Weeks, aimed at promoting health eating habits amongst primary schoolchildren. The healthy eating programme encourages children to eat more fresh produce and is based on repeated tastings of fresh fruit and vegetables, rewards and positive role models.
The Food Dudes Presentation
Days provide teachers with an opportunity to network and feel part of a community of change. Ideas about ways in which the Food Dudes programme can be integrated into the curriculum and daily routines are shared, and peer to peer support is encouraged.
A new and improved Food Dudes programme is currently being rolled out in schools and includes new varieties of fruits and vegetables, additional tasting days, new ecofriendly rewards, as well as new teaching and learning materials which include videos, recipes and a range of bilingual activities. There are currently over 1,600 primary schools engaged in the four-year Food Dudes programme, creating a movement of life-long change embedding healthy eating within the school and wider
community in a way that promotes healthy eating habits amongst children, helps to reduce obesity rates, and improve overall wellbeing. Over the lifetime of Food Dudes, over 3,300 primary schools and more than one million pupils have taken part.
The Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme is managed by Bord Bia in Ireland and is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food
and the Marine with support from the European Union under the School Fruit and Vegetables Scheme. The programme was first developed by the Food Activity Research Unit, School of Psychology at Bangor University, Wales.

Turn2Me Welcomes Minister Foley’s Anti-Bullying Plans
Turn2Me, a national mental health charity, has praised Minister Norma Foley’s new plans to combat bullying in schools. Last year, the charity launched a support group for parents of bullied children, noting that common issues included feelings of helplessness, anxiety about intervention, and frustration with schools. One highlight of the new plan is the requirement for schools to review bullying cases with students and
parents after 20 days to ensure the bullying has stopped. “Parents often feel frustrated without follow-up or review after reporting bullying,” said Fiona O’Malley, CEO of Turn2Me. “This plan reassures parents that actions are being taken and monitored. Bullying can cause sleepless nights, loss of appetite, and stress, affecting the entire family.” Turn2Me also supports the introduction of an anonymized national database to form part of an
annual bullying report. “Data-driven decisions are informed decisions. By examining data, we can identify common issues and create tailored approaches to address them,” O’Malley added.
Parents often worry about how and when to intervene in bullying situations. “Parents can’t and shouldn’t intervene every time their child faces difficulty—overcoming barriers helps children build resilience. However, long-term
bullying can significantly impact a child’s confidence and self-esteem. Having a structured process ensures children and their parents know they will be heard and that their concerns matter,” O’Malley stated. Turn2Me offers free mental health services to parents experiencing anxiety or depression due to their child’s bullying. The charity provides up to six free counselling sessions for adults, available on Turn2Me.ie
