Cindy is an Instagram Influencer and has a following of nearly half a million people. She heard legislation was signed into law ‘The Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022’ and wonders is this something she should be familiar with before posting new content.
Artificial Intelligence is advancing so rapidly the law is struggling to keep up. Snapchat filters use computer vison to change how we look, and apps have been created to generate fake music and pictures, this content being produced by artificial intelligence makes it difficult to determine what is real and what is fake. In fact, Social Media Influencers in Norway must now label edited photos as such under new Norwegian Law. When we look things up or clink on a link, the algorithm grasps on to it and starts to feed us more and more of that content be it healthy or not, at times it feels like our phone can read our minds.
Ireland has introduced The Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022 to combat the availability of harmful material online with a focus on minors. The Act establishes a new Commission who will be responsible for overseeing updated regulations for broadcasting
providers, video on-demand providers and video sharing platforms, in addition to the new regulatory framework for online safety created by the Act. The Commission will also implement various online safety codes. The Commission will have powers to issue binding codes and rules, collect levies, carry out investigations, receive complaints, and impose administrative fines.
When deciding whether to subject a service to an online safety code or codes (which are binding and failure to comply may result in the Commission imposing sanctions, up to and including seeking an access blocking order from the High Court), the Commission must consider the nature and scale of the services being provided, the levels of availability of potentially harmful content on that service, or the likelihood of exposure and .
It is likely that with nearly half a million followers the commission would think Cindy should be subject to safety codes and should be informed of the same before posting new content.

Ballyroe Hotel was at maximum capacity last weekend as Margaret Kissane aided by Carmel Russell and a team of others hosted one of the biggest Connect Kerry events . The event was MC’d by John Drummey .
Friday 16th June was an exciting day in Listellick National School. Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne blessed the new school and Minister for Education and Skills, Norma Foley officially opened the school –cutting the ribbon and unveiling the plaque. The plaque was donated by the Tracey family of Kingdom Memorials. Their son Conor is in first class and Philip is a past pupil. The Principal Annette Dineen thanked all who had contributed to moving the project forward for many years. She also thanked all involved in the building for their work.
Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland, has launched its Scoil Programme, bringing Irish traditional arts to Kerry schools. The program, which started in February, focuses on creative learning through folk arts like dance, music, and storytelling. Participating schools in Tralee, Castleisland, and North Kerry have already enjoyed performances and activities, and more schools will join in September 2023. The inclusion of traditional creative arts in schools benefits students by promoting physical activity, well-being, and social skills while preserving Siamsa Tíre’s cultural heritage. Schools can choose from one-off workshops, multi-week class series, or longer-term programs tailored to their needs. Leading the Scoil programme are experienced Siamsa Tíre members, including artistic director Jonathan Kelliher, repertory director Joanne Barry, training and development officer Anne McDonnell, and children’s
author Olivia Hope.
Siamsa Tíre’s return to the classroom continues a Kerry tradition where dance masters and musicians pass on their skills to new generations. Artistic director Jonathan Kelliher learned from Kerry dance masters during his youth and collaborates with his original dance master, Jimmy Hickey, to preserve traditional Munnix dance steps. These steps, some previously forgotten, are being recorded and shared to ensure their continuation.
Jonathan Kelliher is excited about the program’s success, expressing delight at the interest shown this year and looking forward to expanding it in the autumn. As a former Siamsa Tíre student, he is eager to share his lifelong passion for Munnix dance with Kerry schools and pass on cultural traditions to the next generation.
With over 30 years of experience as a performer and director, Jonathan Kelliher has taught at the National
Folk Theatre’s Academy and conducted workshops in various educational programs. Schools interested in participating in the Scoil Programme and providing students
access to Irish traditional folk arts can contact Jonathan or Olivia at creativelearning@siamsatire.com or jonathan@siamsatire.com.

“The Scoil Eoin School Spirit Award was devised by the Student Council along with Mr. O’Toole in 2016.” says Carol Anne O Donoghue “”This award is not academic award, rather an award in recognition of a pupil who promotes inclusiveness and fairness, is a good role model and displays exemplary behaviour. Each teacher nominates a pupil from their class. All nominations are sent to our Student Council coordinator, myself , Mrs. Carol Anne O’Donoghue, who meets with the Student Council members to go through the nominations. This process is done anonymously. The student Council vote without knowing the identity of the nominees in the interest of fairness. Today the three 5th classes were called to the hall for an announcement. Testament to the anonymity of the voting process, one of the Student Council members Rian Tuohy was announced as this year’s winner. He had no idea up until the announcement. Rian was nominated by his teacher Ms. Lyons because he is ‘mannerly, respectful to all and honourable. He is talented yet humble’.His mom Dawn had been informed and was on hand to celebrate with Rian. His dad Leonard who works in the school had been kept in the dark and got a lovely surprise. Rian was presented with a trophy by Mrs. O’Toole and his name is now engraved on the School Spirit plaque. “

Top Irish hillclimb racer, Ben O’Brien from Limerick, has officially confirmed his participation in the Brian O’Neill Garden Equipment and Trailers Ballyfinnane Festival of Speed. Set to take place in Kerry on July 16, this exciting event is jointly organized by the Kerry Motor Club and The Ballyfinnane Community Association, aiming to commemorate 120 years of closed-road motorsport in County Kerry.
